Sen. Roger Marshall says he will launch an investigation into Google after the search engine suppressed content related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Google is “no longer functioning as a search engine that just assimilates” information, says Marshall, R-Kan., “but now they're using algorithms to campaign against President Trump.” Initiating a Google search of “assassination attempt on president,” quickly reveals that Trump's name is not within the autofill of suggested searches, although former Presidents Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan are. Google enjoys legal protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Those protections shield Google and other platforms, such as Facebook and X, from civil liability for the content users of the platform generate. But if Google wants to act as a publisher, like a news outlet, they should not enjoy Section 230 protections, Marshall says. The Kansas Republican is calling on Google to explain what he regards as content suppression, but says he thinks that “if we had a strong commander in chief, that they would be intervening already.” Marshall joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the investigation into what he asserts is Google's content suppression. Marshall also weighs in on the plea deal reached with three terrorists behind the 9/11 attacks, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, described as the mastermind of the attacks. The deal takes the death penalty off the table for the terrorists imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in exchange for them pleading guilty to a number of charges, including the murders of nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001. The Kansas lawmaker explains why he thinks the deal is a “slap in the face” to the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, and all who still suffer from physical injuries because of the terrorist attacks. Enjoy the show!
Republican Rep. Stephen Howe of Salina marked the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the U.S. Capitol with a forceful opinion column condemning political violence and supporting the peaceful transition of power. The column was thoughtful, thorough and unexpected in today's divided political climate. Howe talks about his thoughts on the topic, as well as the new session of the Kansas Legislature.

Hour 1 - Good Monday morning! Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: Sound of Freedom is a true story film that exposes the darkness of child trafficking. A federal agent saves a boy from traffickers, but his sister is still captive. He embarks on a dangerous mission, risking his life to free her from a fate worse than death. You would think this is something EVERYONE could get behind, right? Wrong. Multiple liberal outlets have trashed the new film "Sound of Freedom" as "QAnon-adjacent" and "fit for QAnon." Kansas Republican attorney general Kris Kobach is suing Gov. Laura Kelly (D-KS) over her new law that allows transgenders to change the sex on their driver's license. Ben & Jerry's called on the US to return “stolen Indigenous land” in a Fourth of July message. Turns out, Ben & Jerry's factory is on... Stolen Indigenous land. An indigenous Native American chief in Vermont said he would be open to talking with ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's about taking back the land under its headquarters.
Senior transportation policymakers are calling for passage of several big-picture supply chain-centric bills with the congressional August recess approaching. A bill recently introduced in the Senate meant to improve freight rail connectivity is the latest in this series of measures awaiting consideration in Congress. The Reliable Rail Service Act, sponsored by Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, and Roger Marshall, a Kansas Republican, would pursue certain updates to operations at the Surface Transportation Board. Doing so, the sponsors insisted, would promote reliability across the freight rail network.

Kansas Republican leaders rejected comparisons of COVID-19 vaccine requirements to the Holocaust last week after a former Kansas City, Kansas, mayoral candidate donned a yellow star to testify on the Legislature's plans to resist federal rules. Protesters rallying against vaccination mandates displayed a swastika and yellow Star of David on Sunday outside the office of New York state Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, who is Jewish. The rally was organized by Rob Astorino, a Republican candidate for governor. Complaints leveled against Dr. Justin Buls for spreading misinformation about the COVID pandemic — among other inflammatory comments — have prompted discussions about freedom of speech. At one point, Buls' profile picture on Facebook displayed a swastika made of syringe needles. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Joe Biden went to Pennsylvania to speak for 3 minutes using cue cards and then went to his nearby home in Delaware again. What's going on here? A Kansas Republican is in trouble with the law and this case shows the true difference between conservatives and liberals. Dems are passing laws to eliminate voter ID despite a whopping 75% of Americans, including Dems, that want it. Nascar is deploying Covid sniffing dogs this week in Atlanta and you have to hear the story of the little autistic boy kicked off an airplane because he has trouble wearing a mask.

Last week, the US Senate confirmed Sam Brownback as America’s next ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom. The appointment came six months after President Trump had nominated the former Kansas Republican governor. Brown’s position is part of the Office of International Religious Freedom (IRF), a State Department office which monitors persecution and discrimination on a global scale. Created during the Clinton administration in 1998, the IRF exists as part of a larger American foreign policy strategy of promoting international religious freedom. “It’s not only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do,” said Melissa Rogers, who previously served as the executive director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships in the Obama administration. “We find that when societies embrace religious liberty for all, they reap all kinds of benefits like building a more peaceful, just, stable, and more productive society. It makes the world a more peaceful and productive place.” Rogers joined associate digital media producer Morgan Lee and editor in chief Mark Galli to discuss the US strategies for advocating for religious freedom, why Western Christians’ speaking up for religious minorities in their own nation helps the persecuted church overseas, and if this office is just another way America imposes its values on other countries.
This week's guest on Open Mic is U.S. Senator Jerry Moran. The Kansas Republican participated in the American Farm Bureau Convention last week in Nashville and provided a pessimistic forecast for Congress to complete a new farm bill in 2018. Immediately, legislators face another spending deadline this week as well as consideration of disaster assistance and immigration issues. Moran supports continued efforts for better trade agreements and says NAFTA is simply too important to the nation for the Trump Administration to threaten a withdrawal. Senator Moran voted for tax reform and outlines areas he expect to see improvement in the nation's economy.
