Guests: Andi Buerger, Cassandra Tindal and Danielle Bisutti Bio: Andi Buerger, JD is an international speaker, author, and advocate for victims of human trafficking & exploitation. Andi herself was a victim of child sex trafficking and unspeakable abuses by family members for 17 years. She founded Beulah's Place, which provided temporary shelter services to at-risk, unsheltered teens for 14 years. 300+ youth were successfully rescued and assisted, earning national recognition. Andi later founded Voices Against Trafficking(VAT) to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves — the voiceless victims of human trafficking and exploitation. VAT advocates for the protection of every human's rights regardless of race, gender, culture, or socio-economic status. Voices Against Trafficking-The Strength of Many Voices Speaking As One, gives a portion of proceeds from each sale to survivors of child abuse and trafficking, as does Andi's first book, A Fragile Thread of Hope - One Survivor's Quest to Rescue. Andi launched Voices Of Courage magazine in 2023. It is distributed internationally and accepted into the U.S. Library of Congress. It honors everyday heroes who selflessly fight to protect human rights. These champions come from all walks of life to change communities and the world for the better. A television series by the same title debuts in 2025. Sondra Witt Burch, age 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 7, 2024. The day prior had been a day of love, laughter, and tears, surrounded by her loving family. Following a private family burial, a celebration of Sondra's life is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 2:00PM at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Robinson, Texas with visitation for family and friends immediately following the service. Sondra was born in Waco, Texas on March 27, 1936, to George Cleveland, Sr., and Virginia Craven Witt. She was a lifelong Waco resident and loved her community. She often reminisced about her family home on Washington Ave and the many mischievous escapades she and her brother Cleveland would get into as children and teens. As a young girl, Sondra and her mother Virginia knitted sweaters for WWII soldiers and entertained local soldiers from the USO by playing piano and organ duets and serving food in their home. During the Waco tornado of 1953, Sondra was having her senior portraits made at the studio of Jimmy Willis. These proofs were found 30 years later by Mr. Willis and personally delivered to the then Sondra Burch. Sondra attended Waco High School where she fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Jackson Bryce Burch and they married June 4, 1955. Sondra and Jack shared 53 wonderful years until Jack's passing in 2008. As newlyweds, Jack served his country in the USAF. While stationed in Germany, Sondra's fondest memories were being a member of the Officer's Wives Club and the birth of her firstborn son, Bryce. Sondra continued her love of service to others by helping organize projects to aid refugees during the Hungarian Revolution. Upon returning to the states, Treacy and Ben arrived six years apart to the day, completing their family. She managed to raise three lively boys while maintaining poise, grace, and style. She was known to bring orange juice or lemonade out to the waste management collectors on occasion! Sondra was proud of her heritage and the Waco community. She served on numerous placements through Junior League of Waco. Service was her gift, and she spent countless hours on local committees and Boards of Director including Waco Cotton Palace, United Way, Hedonia Club, Red Cross, Hillcrest Baptist Hospital Auxiliary, Providence Park Auxiliary, and many more. She coordinated blood drives, created Adopt A Grandparent programs and Adopt A School programs, and organized volunteer services and training through many local agencies. Even in her career choices, Sondra chose areas of service. After 25 years of serving as Director of Volunteer Services for Hillcrest Baptist Hospital she retired in 1997. She didn't stay retired long and subsequently served as Director of Volunteer Services for Family Abuse Center, Director of Volunteer Services for United Way, Director of Human Resources for Brazos Psychiatric Hospital, and Director of Volunteer Services and Community Relations for Christus Regis St. Elizabeth. Jack and Sondra prioritized family and Sunday lunch was expected at the Burch household. Some of the family's most treasured memories are those Sunday lunches, and family vacations to Colorado, Mo Ranch, and grandchildren only trips to New York. Sondra wanted her children and grandchildren to see and experience the world and all that life has to offer. She valued creating memories with each one of them and enjoyed “breaking a few rules” for the sake of fun! Colton and Tanner were introduced to the fine skill and technique of “wrapping” houses in Castle Heights along with Friday night sleepovers and non-parent approved movies at Honey and Papa's. Lottie, Amber, and Braxton were immersed in all thing's “girly” such as dolls, tea parties and pretty dresses. She wanted her children and grandchildren to know that life's rewards come first and foremost from a relationship with Jesus, a good work ethic, and treating people with kindness, love, and respect. Following the devastating loss of her husband Jack and two of her sons, Treacy and Bryce, Sondra found love again with Ross Sams Jr. They were married on March 16, 2010. She often called Ross her Knight in Shining Armor. She and Ross loved to travel when their health permitted. When they were no longer able, they reminisced about the adventures they shared together and “planned” many trips that we all knew would never be taken. Sondra was an avid Lady Bears Basketball and Baylor Football fan, a Dallas Mavericks fan, and she grew to love Texas Longhorn Football, Ross's alma mater. Sondra and Ross both suffered the devastating effects of cognitive impairment (dementia) in their later years. As their respective impairments advanced and health declined, it became necessary for Sondra to move to an environment with caregivers who could provide compassionate, empathic, and loving care, as this could not be provided in her home. She spent her final years at Arbor House where she was known as their very own “Georgia Peach”! Sondra flourished under their loving and specialized care and the staff quickly became family. She loved each one of them and we cannot thank them enough for taking care of “Honey.” Sondra expressed her unwavering love for Ross until her death. As with Sondra, we take great comfort knowing that when Ross entered heaven, his body was healed, his mind was restored, and all truths revealed. We know that they loved each other dearly. Sondra was a true “Southern Lady,” full of class and character. She was often compared to the late Audrey Hepburn who spoke the following words… “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.” Sondra often exhibited this beauty in her kindness to others. She was the perfect hostess and became Pen Pals with many of the children of her close friends while they were away at college or in the military. She had a most giving heart and a beautiful soul. Sondra is preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Jackson Bryce Burch Sr., and Ross Martin Sams Jr.; two sons, Treacy Andrew Burch, and Jackson Bryce Burch Jr; and brother and sister-in-law, George Cleveland, Jr., and Martha Witt. Sondra is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Genie Burch; daughter-in-law, Tracy Burch Thompson and husband Darrell; sister-in-law, Catherine Burch Bass; grandchildren, Lottie Bullock and husband BJ, Amber Araiza and husband Icaro, Colton Burch and wife Meighann, Tanner Burch, and Braxton Burch; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; as well as her lifelong friends Betty Williams, Margie Allen, and Pat Dicorte. Sondra's grandchildren and their spouses will serve as honorary pallbearers. At Sondra's request, memorials may be made in her memory to, Meadowbrook Baptist Church Youth and Children's Ministry Camp Scholarship Fund. The following Ralph Waldo Emerson quote was found written in Sondra's handwriting. “To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived…This is to have succeeded.” Honey, you have succeeded! Till we meet again… Celebration Services and visitation are pending at this time. Please check back for updated information.Sondra's family invites you to leave a message or memory on her "Tribute Wall" at www.WHBfamily.com.
Hard times were coming for Israel; big needs, big challenges to come. They desperately needed help. Enter Isaiah - a prophet with a word from the Lord. What will it be God? After all, in the past, there were 10 plagues and the parting of the Red Sea to get us away from Egypt. There was that time when the wall around the city of Jericho fell down so that Israel could just rush in and take it. There was that time that an angel entered the camp of the Assyrians and killed 185,000 of them. What will it be this time, God?Something quite unexpected… “Unto us a child is born. Unto us a SON is given”Here is God: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father. Prince of Peace. But not in a great wind. Not a pillar of fire. And he's - a BABY??Israel needed help. Humanity needed help. And what do we get? A Destroyer of Worlds? A Knight in Shining Armor? No. We get a SON. A Son who started out small.I wonder if this was a letdown for the people of Israel when Isaiah delivered it. I mean it STARTED well enough: Matthew 4 repeats this prophecy to show how God fulfilled His promise, not just in Isaiah's time, but with the birth of Jesus.

Author's Note: This podcast was recorded after Universal Music Group (UMG) removed its entire catalog from TikTok. Also, the song, “One More Song (demo)” was featured in the film ROCKBOTTOM, which is now on Prime Video NOT Netflix. It is a pleasure to welcome pop/R&B band ICYDAY to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.ICYDAY is made up of Sloane Morgan Siegel, David Bloom, and guitarist-pianist Isaac Cohen. Sloane portrayed the titular characters in Dwight in Shining Armor and Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street and appeared in Chartered, Game Shakers, The Goldbergs, and NCIS. Sloane voiced Robin (Tim Drake) in the Gotham Knights video game. David portrayed Kevin in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, Stanley Zielinski in Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, Josh in American Born Chinese, and Teenage Al in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. He also appeared in CSI: NY, Modern Family, The Goldbergs, and Arrow. Sloane and David first met on the set of The Goldbergs years ago and have known each other since they were 13. Sloane and David teamed up with Isaac to pursue this musical passion project. On January 26, the trio released their debut single, “Open Up” was released. The catchy, laidback single demonstrates the group's serious musical talent for crafting melody, blending elements of jazz, pop, indie, and funk into a commercial sound you can envision in the background of a film or your favorite coffee shop. “Open Shop” is an honest song about wanting to know somebody better, the ebbs and flows of a relationship, with tasteful R&B electric guitar and neo-soul sound. ICYDAY dropped their second single, a heartbreak love song called “Love Isn't Fair,” on February 15, followed by their third song, “One More Song,” on March 8. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, ICYDAY shared their origin story, the stories behind their songs, and their take on using TikTok to build their fanbase. or..."It's Not Always Easy to Be a Smithsonian"-- Well, this gang is a bunch of total suckers for old Hollywood. We do live in L.A. and Palm Springs after all. And we also fall for a movie with a good budget. This one had that--or at least was HELLA sponsored by THE BILTMORE ESTATE! DID WE MENTION THE BILMORE ESTATE?! Which Beth hasn't been to, Richie has been to, Paige has been outside of, but which her grandmother deemed too expensive so instead they went to the Grove Park Inn. So it was nice to spend time there. We also all love a good time travel! So if you haven't watched this one, we recommend it!This one still didn't have enough seals for Richie. If you don't get that reference you may have missed our episode on "Mystic Christmas...."Speaking of unsolicited recommendations, we also made some recommendations in this episode. Mostly for time travel romance novels, including A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux, Rhapsody in Time by Judith O'Brien, Green Darkness by Anne Seton, and if you've been meaning to get around to read the 800 page behemoth that is Outlander here's your reminder. These are also wonderful escapist holiday present ideas! Richie also recommended Terminator. Less romantic but you know. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. My friend Jake Yates joins us to bravely share his story. Jake (mid 30's, RM, father of two, recently divorced, in same-sex relationship, respectful of and believes in the Church) joins us to share his story. Jake starts with the early years (growing up in Sandy, Utah) realizing he was different. Those feelings continued through high school and his mission. Jake, to “prove” he wasn't gay, was unkind to LGBTQ+ individuals so he wouldn't be “discovered". Jake talks about returning home from his mission and getting married and then being called to church leadership assignments but feeling two-faced because of his sexual orientation—which led to suicidal ideation. That road continued for many years (including being saved from suicide by his then wife). Jake talks about personal revelation, journaling, scripture study, and his poor emotional health—leading him to come out to his wife (good experience) and then his Bishop (while serving as his counselor; also a good experience) and then his Stake President (also a good experience). These are deeply moving stories of being with someone in one of their most vulnerable moments. Jake talks about his path forward which led to eventually separating from his wife, how they are co-parenting their two sons, and his continued respect for his ex-wife (including his hope for her future). Jake talks about finding his “Knight in Shining Armor” and their healthy/strong relationship and staying connected to Heavenly Father, Jesus and gospel principles. In the closing segment Jake gives thoughtful advice for other LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints. Jake isn't trying to have others follow his path, but speaks to principles and perspectives to “write your own story” based on personal revelation, going slow, and being intentional. Thank you, Jake, for being on the podcast. You are brave to share your story. I'm glad you are alive and moving forward in your life. You are a good man and father. I hope your story helps us better understand and support LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints and also helps LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints in their path forward. Ever found yourself chuckling at the absurdity of crowded beaches and the intriguing world of ASMR? Brace yourself, because Britt and Sam have a rollercoaster of stories to share from their recent escapades at the West Indian Labor Day Parade and our beach adventures. Expect a mix of light-hearted banter and some serious discussions on the dynamics of strong personalities while traveling and the quirks of beachgoers that can sometimes be a wet blanket on the fun.Can you imagine the terror of being caught up in an intense standoff? We experienced that fear firsthand during an unsettling incident on Union Street, New York. That transitioned into a debate on the controversy surrounding Spice and Erica's argument and the sensitive issue of dragging someone's child into a dispute. But that's not all. We also examine the dangerous culture of men using BDSM as a mask for their enjoyment of hurting women, using the disconcerting allegations against actor Armie Hammer as an example. Finally, we turn the spotlight on a societal issue that often gets brushed under the carpet - violence against women. What happens when women find themselves needing protection even from those they are in relationships with? We delve into these unsettling situations and the role of bystander inaction in exacerbating them. We also critique a viral video involving a black woman and a white man, questioning public safety, bystander intervention, and the unrealistic expectations of 'knights in shining armor'. Listen in as we navigate these serious discussions, and more. Please Like♥️, Share
It starts with you. And it ends with you. Always and forever. With the image casted upon us from Storybooks & Fairytales of the Damsel in Distress & the Knight in Shining Armor, we often feel in the depths of our pain and confusion, that we are to wait to be rescued by an unknown savior on horseback to break us out of the dungeon of affliction and into freedom. But this is an illusion. For that Knight In Shining Armor, who frees you from all of the stagnant anguish - has always been + will forever be: You. If you wait for someone or something to come rushing in and break you out of captivity, you will be waiting forever. No one will ever know you, like you know you. No one has ever woken up with you every single day and gone to sleep with you every night, other than you. No one else, and nothing else, has access to your mind or your memories. The loving people in our lives can only guide us, support us, and give us what we need - when we know what it is we need and can ask for it.You don't have to heal, you get to heal. You don't have to rewrite your story, you get to pick up at any point and decide with love that it is your story to write. And while it can feel heavy, it is the most profound privilege, honor, and responsibility that you have in this life. Your ability to create the life you want starts with your ability to accept your life and yourself now, to accept your responsibility in every step you take, and lovingly redirect into what you get to define. xxIn this episode, I cover: Becoming the artist of your own life. It's the first day of Women's History Month and this episode is exactly the right way to start it off. On today's episode, Bailey and Emily are back for the second half of their romance discussion. Last week, they read and discussed Jude Deveraux's 1989 novel, A Knight in Shining Armor. This week it's Scarlett St. Clair's recent title King of Battle and Blood and let's just say this one is WAAAYYYY less problematic. It's big on #tiktok right now and it also has a rating of THREE spicy peppers (which Bailey assures me means it's good!). Oh, yeah, and this episode is NSFW, obvs. Headphones if little ears are around! Also discussed in this episode: Weird character name pronunciations! Equality in romance novels! Flying sex in ACOTAR! Young Adult vs New Adult books Emily can't pronounce Isolde! More differences between 1980s and 2020s romances! Bailey creates the “Good Guy/Sauciness” scale! Emotional maturity is important!! Respect the NO. Be Kind - not nice! Flipping gender norms in romances! Guys, THE BAR IS SO LOW. “I need a hero. I'm holding out for a hero ‘til the end of the night. She's gotta be strong, and she's gotta be fast, and she's gotta for sure be a dyke.” This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the ‘Dyke In Shining Armor' trope, which we will forever be referring to as a DSA. The DSA shows up repeatedly in the media, but is also pretty prevalent within real life lesbian relationship dynamics. This trope really toes the line of being a little problematic, because it is inherently heteronormative in that it is based on the concept of a big strong man swooping in to save a helpless damsel. Yet, when we see it reflected in our onscreen queer ships, we eat that shiz up. We talk about when this trope works, whether it can apply to villains (Lucy Diamond anyone?), and whether the dynamic can truly exist outside of the confines of heteronormativity. We view a DSA as a dyke who will protect and rescue her chosen person from all harm. We love this dynamic because it subverts the stereotype by replacing the male in the media landscape. The other great thing about a DSA is that when there are two women in this type of relationship, typically they switch off on saving one another. Think about Nicole Haught and Waverly. Just because Nicole is the main protector, that doesn't mean Waverly is helpless or won't rescue her protector from time to time. This differs from the straight ‘Knight in Shining Armor' trope in the media, because the hero is capable of being saved, whereas in a heterosexual couple this is avoided in order to refrain from “emasculating” the male character. There's also the option in queer ships for a couple to be DSA for DSA, like Xena and Gabrielle. Xena is basically the quintessential DSA. She is literally a full on dyke saving people with a sword. Yet, she falls for Gabrielle, who is very much also a DSA. So many ‘strong female characters' embody the DSA archetype, but Hollywood allows so few of them to actually be gay. We want more dykes in shining armor! Problematic patriarchal implications aside, this dynamic is delightful to see on screen and honestly is so relatable for so many queer people. If you want to treat your girl like a princess and protect her from any and all harm, potentially at the risk of your own life, you just may be a DSA. Gird your loins, podcast listeners: Bailey and Emily are back with another installment of Sweet and Spicy Reads!!! This time, they're discussing the 1989 time-traveling romance Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. This verrrrryyyyy dated title, recommended by resident-and-long-time-romance-reader Sam has Emily and Bailey's heads spinning with the 80's-style misogyny smattered throughout the plot and character development (or lack thereof). Strap in (or on, whatever your fancy) because this one's tagged EXPLICIT for a reason. Not for little ears, my friends. Other topics discussed: - Relationship red flags - Family system theory - Dating and settling and not expecting better treatment from our partners - Is sex actually a time portal? TBD - Sex positivity - Why the "enemies to lovers" trope is fire - What we would say to our teenage selves Theme music by Wolves Incidental music by Colorfilm --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/book-prose/message
Kim and Ernest talk about different personas that self-righteous shaming can take: the Incredible Hulk, White Savior and The Knight in Shining Armor.

Family Theater was a dramatic anthology radio show which aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the United States from February 13, 1947, to September 11, 1957. The show was produced by Family Theater Productions, a film and radio studio extension of the Family Rosary Crusade founded by the Holy Cross Priest, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, to promote family prayer. The motto of these Holy Cross Family Ministries is, "The family that prays together, stays together." In its ten-year run, well-known actors, and actresses, including James Stewart, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Raymond Burr, Jane Wyatt, Charlton Heston, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors, appeared as announcers, narrators, or stars. Book Vs. Movie: The Witches Roald Dahl's 1983 Children's Novel Vs. the 1990 Nicolas Roeg Cult Classic FilmThe Margos finish October's month of spooky books and movies with 1983's The Witches by Roald Dahl (a favorite of this podcast!) This is one of his last works before his death in 1990 and is based on his love for his mother, Sofie Dahl. Stephen Roxburgh edited the work, and Quentin Blake's illustrations received great praise at the time though the story was thought to be “misogynistic.” It's now known as a modern classic. The story of an unnamed boy who lives with his Norweigian grandmother after his parents are killed and learns about witches who are ALL female and eat children is---intense. He learns that witches all over the world behave differently and that his being sent to an English school might make him vulnerable to the Grand Vulnerable High Witch of All the World. The story has kids turning into mice, magic potions, wigs, pea soup, and so much more weirdness, and an ending that might be more off-putting than encouraging. Nicolas Roeg directed the 1990 film that was considered a box office disappointment because it had a different ending than the book (happier, which Dahl completely hated and should not be a surprise considering what we knew about him) but is now considered a classic. Between the 1983 novel and 1990--which did we like better? You have to listen to find out!!This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and A Ghost in Shining Armor, the novel by Therese Beharrie.ROM-COM WITH A TOUCH OF MAGIC: This Cape Town-set rom-com is the second in a duology about two South African sisters who were separated as children when one was adopted and the other went into foster care. After reuniting as adults, they learn they've each developed unique abilities. The previous book focused on the sister who can manifest her dreams. This book revolves around Gemma, who can see and communicate with ghosts. FOR FANS OF: This #OwnVoices romantic comedy is ideal for fans of authors who have found success blending romance, comedy, and more weighty real-world issues, such as Jasmine Guillory, Abby Jimenez, Helen Hoang, & Alisha Rai. Readers who enjoy authors bringing new perspectives to the world of romance, such as Talia Hibbert and Erin Sterling will also be pleased. Once haunted . . . Gemma Daniels has never been quite the “down to earth” woman her adoptive parents raised her to be. She even has a unique gift: she can see ghosts and likes helping them settle their unfinished business. But the hotter-than-hot stranger she impulsively kisses on a bet is not only a phantom; he's determined to help her. And the only way Gemma can explain his presence is to pretend they're a real-life couple. Twice shy . . . Levi Walker lived—and died—to save his sister. Now he's got a second chance at life if he assists Gemma in reuniting with her long-lost sibling . . . and then never sees Gemma again. But as he starts to enjoy her irrepressible personality, he's finding it hard to abide by any rules at all . . . Gemma is thrilled to be getting to know her sister, but it causes a family rift she may be unable to heal. On top of that, she's falling for a ghost with a dilemma. Levi must decide what loyalty—and living—is truly all about. Gemma and Levi must risk being real with each other to fix their mistakes if they are ever to claim true love.Visit her online at Therese Beharrie and on Twitter @ThereseBeharrie.In this ep the Margos discuss:The life of Roald DahlThe plot of the story versus the 1990 filmThe controversy around the movie and why it is considered a classic filmThe cast: Anjelica Huston (Ena Ernst/The Grand High Witch,) Mai Zetterling (Helga Eveshim,) Jasen Fisher (Luke Eveshim,) Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Stringer,) Brenda Blethyn Mrs. Jenkins,) Charlie Potter (Bruno) and Jane Horrocks as Miss Susan Irvine. Book Vs. Movie: Don't Look Now The Daphne DuMaurier Short Story Vs. the Nicolas Roeg FilmIt's October, and the Margos are feeling excited about watching spooky movies! This week we talk about the ever-amazing Daphe DuMaurier, and her short story Don't Look Now, which was published in 1971 and later adapted by director Nicolas Roeg and starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. The story and film are considered classic tales of horror for the tale of parents dealing with the loss of a child while on vacation in Venice. John and Laura are on holiday trying to escape their grief from the death of their daughter, who died from meningitis (in the book), when they meet identical twin sisters who are older and have psychic abilities. One of the sisters is also blind. They warn the couple that their son, Johnnie, has “second sight” and will be killed if they stay in Venice. The movie has many of the same beats as the original story but is controversial for a sex scene between the leads that may or may not be “real.” The movie is considered a classic in horror and a “must-see” for its editing and acting. This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and A Ghost in Shining Armor, the novel by Therese Beharrie.ROM-COM WITH A TOUCH OF MAGIC: This Cape Town-set rom-com is the second in a duology about two South African sisters who were separated as children when one was adopted, and the other went into foster care. Looking For The Middle: The Christian Girl's Guide to Modern Dating
Whew! That title was a mouthful! This week's episode stemmed from a conversation we had about how what we all tend to look for in someone to date is really what makes dating itself so difficult! If we had a more realistic view of people, and who God created them to be, we might not be in this mess. So, this week we're taking a look at some of the things we should look for instead!

Our Trailblazer episodes continue this week with Jude Deveraux, an early historical romance author who broke several publishing barriers over her more than forty year career. In this episode, we talk about her journey through the Wild West of romance in the late 1970s, her publishing career at Avon Books, Pocket Books and Ballantine. We talk about the judgement and misogyny that circles romance, the buying power of readers, and the way the genre and bookselling has changed. We also talk about her writing process, and what it's like to be Jude Deveraux. This one is a real joy for us, as we wouldn't be the readers or writers we are without Jude Deveraux. This episode is sponsored by Avon Books, publisher of Joanna Shupe's The Bride Goes Rogue, and Amazon's Kindle Vella, publisher of Eloisa James's The Seduction Series. Our next read along is Virginia Henley's The Dragon and the Jewel, a deep cut from Sarah's childhood. Check your content warnings and remember this one is from 1991, so we don't even know, honestly. We're flying without a net here. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo or your local indie.Show NotesLike many of our trailblazers, Jude Deveraux's first brush with romance was Kathleen E Woodiwiss's The Flame & the Flower. The publisher with “the prettiest covers” in the 1970s she references was Woodiwiss's publisher, Avon Books. Books of Jude Deveraux's that we talk about in depth include: The Enchanted Land (her debut novel), A Knight in Shining Armor (early time-travel romance), Sweet Liar, The Providence Falls series with Tara Sheets, The Girl from Summer Hill, Twin of Ice (the twins!!), and “The Matchmakers” a short story in The Invitation collection (featuring Cale & the angel sex scene). The Four Js were Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught.People mentioned in the episode: Kate Duffy, editor at Silhouette Books and Pocket Books; Joan Schulhafer, publicist at Pocket Books; Richard Gallen, publisher & packager; Ronald Busch, publisher of Pocket Books; Robert Gottlieb, agent; Linda Marrow, editor at Ballantine/Doubleday/Dell; Kathryn Falk, publisher of Romantic Times Magazine; Kathe Robin, reviewer at Romantic Times Magazine.
