This week on Spill the tea with Womenkind Collective we're diving deep into the conversations that matter and we wanted to talk about internalised misogyny and why so many women judge another woman, is this a deep patriarchal conditioning to keep women divided? Who better to help us unpack this emotive topic than the fabulous Lauren Currie OBE. Lauren is an incredible keynote speaker, and for seven years, she served as the chairperson of Pregnant Then Screwed. She is the founder of UPFRONT, a ground-breaking organisation on a mission to transform confidence, visibility, and power for 10 million women. Thousands of women across 50+ countries have already graduated from her flagship programme, The UPFRONT Bond, proving that this is more than a movement—it's a revolution. Her impact has not gone unnoticed—she's been recognised as a woman changing the world by Elle Magazine and named one of Management Today's top businesswomen under 35. In 2017, Lauren was awarded an OBE for her services to design and diversity.Together we explore:1) What internalised misogyny really is- and how to recognise it2) How judgment of women by other women is driven by social conditioning and invisible 'rules'3) The role of media in reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes4) How to unlearn internalised bias and rewire confidence5) The personal moment Lauren realised she had internalised misogyny- and what changed after that6) The story behind make-up free moments, with celebrities like Pamela Anderson, and how they still provoke judgmentand more! Our Book Club gets under way and we discuss the first 2 chapters of our book for this series, How To Kill A Witch. Welcome to our new series of Spill The Tea with Womenkind Collective! This week is our Book Club special and our book for series 13 is a huge part of feminine history, How To Kill A Witch. A Guide For The Patriarchy, by Claire Mitchell & Zoe Venditozzi. The book is a powerful, poignant and razor sharp read, that has already sparked important questions around the witch trials and the murder of countless (mostly) women. Claire and Zoe discuss why this book needed to be written and together these two amazing women are restoring forgotten voices and fighting for justice that is centuries overdue. There is a growing interest and solidarity around the history of the witch trials, not just as something from the past, but as a symbol of sisterhood, resistance, and the ongoing fight against systems that still try to silence and control women. And this book doesn't just tell the story—it demands that we listen. In the first part of this interview (we had to do 2 parts because there is just so much to talk about with these fantastic women!) we talk about the Witches of Scotland tartan, a beautiful symbol of defiance woven into a traditional Scottish tartan, how these two met and what drove them to write this book. Part two will be available later in the series. If you want to read along, we will be reading from the introduction up to chapter 3. There's some weekly inspiration to give you some good news stories that you might have missed, and there's a beautiful quote to send you off for the week with. It's an episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! This week we spill the tea on what it's like living with anxiety in menopause, from our personal experiences. We discus what anxiety disorder is and what it isn't, and a little bit of its history as a disorder. We talk about driving anxiety, why so many women leave the workplace due to the anxiety they feel in menopause along with other menopausal symptoms and why social anxiety can be crippling and stop you from going out. In our new series, we will be spilling the tea on topics that affect our health and well-being from the extra-ordinary women that are raising their voices for positive change. This week we have a very special guest, our very own Jinty Sheerin. Most autistic girls, women and people assigned female at birth, are either, never diagnosed or diagnosed later than boys and men. Some much later in life. The NHS revealed that the number of new suspected autism referrals for people over 18 has tripled since 2019 and the ADHD Foundation says that the number of adults seeking an ADHD diagnosis has increased by 400% since 2020For women in their 50s, discovering their neurodivergence while also navigating menopause can bring both clarity and complexity. Menopause itself introduces significant physical, emotional, and psychological changes, which, when coupled with an autism diagnosis, can intensify or alter how these experiences are processed. This stage of life offers an opportunity for greater self-understanding, yet it also raises challenges in managing both neurological differences and menopausal symptoms. Jinty was diagnosed with autism in December 2023, after a devastating couple of years emotionally - she is also still in peri menopause. In the Book Collective we discuss the first 6 chapters of our book for this series, All Fours by Miranda July. We meet the main characters and find out that all is not quite what it seems in this mid 40 year olds life as she hits the road in search of herself. You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book. In our new series we will be spilling the tea on topics that affect our health and well-being from the extra-ordinary women that are raising their voices for positive change. And what better way to kick-off our new look Series than with campaigner Jo Bateman. Jo is campaigning for cleaner seas and is taking South West Water to court; the water company have repeatedly dumped sewage into the sea preventing Jo (and many others) from sea swimming. For Jo sea swimming has helped her both physically and mentally, but the red flag has been flying for most of the summer on Exmouth beach warning swimmers not to enter the water because you will quite literally be swimming in shit. An empty beach has also impacted massively on businesses that have suffered financially. Jo is not backing down; she is fighting for her right to swim in clean waters and to keep the environment safe for other water users and wildlife. She says, ‘it is simply unacceptable, in the 21st century you can land a spacecraft on Mars but we haven't got a sewage system that disposes of our waste without polluting the rivers and oceans.' We conclude series 10 with an incredible woman who's story we were privileged to hear.Earlier this year we attended the launch of the West Country Women Awards in Plymouth where we met todays guest, who blew us away with her determination to help others through sharing her own story of overcoming shame and finding purpose after being released from prison. The inspirational Raina Dunne has been through unimaginable life experiences from a very early age, yet she bares no bitterness just an intense desire to speak up and raise awareness of a system that doesn't work and how underprivileged and disenfranchised women are being completely let down. But thanks to the charity Gifted Women, women like Raina are finding their way back into society, their aim is to see women thriving in employment or be enrolled in further education and this is achieved in the woman's own time and at a pace that feels realistic and sustainable.Raina tells us ‘I want to help those women, the women that have been hurt, or been damaged by society, they carry that pain, they just need a little extra help, someone to look at them and see them'.You can watch the unedited chat on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.*TRIGGER WARNING*Our conversation with Raina contains some difficult content, such as addiction, violence, exploitation and rape. An intentional overriding theme of this series has been Gender Bias in health care, so today in our penultimate episode of series 10, we talk with Jen Moore who has started the project ‘They Said What?' The medical Me Too movement where she intends to document lived experiences with medical gaslighting, dismissal and misogyny when it comes to women's health conditions. Jen, is an endometriosis and adenomyosis educator, speaker and campaigner who has endured a 22 year-long battle for a diagnosis. She now helps others suffering with these conditions, as well as working to create change on an institutional level. Working with the BBC, the NHS, the University of Cambridge, and global pharmaceutical companies; she is determined to include endometriosis and adenomyosis in these vital and high level discussions. As you all know we at Womenkind Collective are all about shedding light on taboo subjects and one of the biggest taboos is poo! So, we thought it was about time we started to break the stigma about something that we all do.This week our guest is Julie Cornish, not only is she a colorectal surgeon, a senior lecturer but she is also the founder of the superb Every Woman festival.Julie is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with a specialist interest in colorectal cancer and pelvic floor surgery. She has an active research interest in cancer and pelvic floor health. As if this is not enough Julie is also a chief investigator for POLARiS, a study looking into treatment for bowel problems after cancer surgery, she is a trustee of Masic, a charity that supports women who have suffered injuries during childbirth. Julie says that some aspects of women's pelvic health conditions today are a ‘taboo within a taboo'. Bowel incontinence is not a sexy subject and it so often goes unreported and takes on average 7 years for someone to actually go and see their GP.You can watch the interview on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel. The Book Collective: Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, this week we read Chapters, 17 & 18, women are beginning to raise their voices about gender inequality in healthcare, the medical gaslighting of black women and the AIDS pandemic. In chapter 18 Elinor tells her story, all the medical gaslighting that she endured until she finally received her diagnosis. You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book. Very occasionally in life, if you are lucky, you meet people that are so wise that you have to stop in your tracks and listen to them speak, and after listening you come away with your eyes more open and the world looks a little brighter than it did before. Today's guest is one of those people, Molly Fenton, she is only 22 yet she is changing lives, she is the award winning founder of the campaign Love your Period, a UN Women UK Delegate and a Young Ambassador for the Brain Tumour Charity. Molly founded Love your period whilst still at school, frustrated by the stigma and lack of education around menstruation, she wanted to act as the big sister that other young people might not have, stimulating conversations around periods and sexual health. Incredibly she has built a volunteer base to 75 people, alongside her own younger sister,Tilly. At 16 Molly was told she had an inoperable brain tumour. Although benign, she describes how her life became ‘watch and wait'. Failing GCSE's, and having to attend her schools behavioural unit and then being told to leave post sixteen, yet she continued helping the community, fighting for girls rights within the health care system. Six years on and Molly lives with many debilitating chronic health conditions, yet she is a keynote speaker, giving talks around the country about her philosophy on life since her brain tumour diagnosis, speaking in Parliament about period stigma and poverty, she is passionate about helping others and is also an ambassador for them Every Woman Festival coming up soon. Our guest this week is the wonderful Author and Autism advocate Emily Katy. Emily's book, Girl Unmasked: How Uncovering My Autism Saved My Life, is a powerful memoir where she shares her personal experiences with autism and mental health. In this chat Emily highlights the challenges she faced in childhood and adulthood, emphasising the importance of understanding and acceptance. We discuss the need for more resources and support for individuals with autism and mental health conditions. We also discuss the challenges of fitting in and masking autistic traits, and the misunderstanding of empathy in autistic individuals. We learn the importance of recognising and understanding autistic traits in children, and how much better it would be if we could recognise Autism in people before they reach crisis point. We chat about how autistic people have unique needs and experiences that should be acknowledged and respected. In her book Emily has a list of Autism Myths, and Emily debunks a few of these for us, such as Autism is a condition that mainly affects boys. We loved this conversation with the incredible Emily Katy (and loved the book too), an essential listen for everyone.Emily Katy:Book: Girl Unmasked. How Uncovering Autism Saved My Life. It happens when the cells from the lining of the womb are found in the muscle wall of the womb. It differs to the more well-known condition, Endometriosis, where cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb are found elsewhere in the body.Tanya has lived experience of both these conditions, but when diagnosed she was given no information, treatment or support and that's why she started The Adeno Gang. Today, she runs workshops to help girls and women get ahead of this. She says, ‘We need to educate ourselves so we can see the right specialists and ask the right questions'. Series 9 FINALE. This month it is Ovarian Cancer awareness month and do you know the four main symptoms of Ovarian Cancer which are Bloating, Stomach pain, weeing more and struggling to eat?Knowing this information could be lifesaving as an early diagnosis can make all the difference. Our guest this week is someone who understands this only too well, Sarah Myatt suffered from and recognised all the classic ovarian cancer symptoms for over two years yet was repeatedly sent away from her GP surgery and told to lose weight or that her symptoms were simply because she was fat. Sarah is a warm and open human being, she comes from Manchester and describes herself as a queer fat woman, she told us that it took a Dr that was fat like her to actually listen, and six hours later she learned that she had a mass measuring 20 x 20 x 19cm filling her abdomen and eight weeks later after over eight hours of menopause inducing surgery, they discovered Sarah had 2 primary cancers, womb and Ovarian, and that it was too advanced to cure. They told Sarah that she should see four years, she was only 42 years old.Now five years on, Sarah shares her lived experience to, not only raise awareness of these cancers but also to shed light on the medical weight stigma and bias she has experienced, the medical gaslighting, the unhelpful assumptions made by Health care professionals about her sexuality and how surgery and a gynaecological cancer diagnosis can change how we feel and experience pleasure and intimacy. In the Book Collective we conclude Caitlin Moran's, What About Men? We read chapter 15, hat About Men and the epilogue. You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book. We also announce our new book for series 10! Our guest on the podcast this week is Louise Butcher, who is not only a breast cancer warrior, she is a topless marathon runner, body positivity icon, a musician, a mum and a bloody lovely person. We ran with Louise in our underwear through her home town in North Devon and got to see the love and support that she has from all the people who meet her.Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. The risk increases with age and most (but not all) women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50. About 1 in 7 women will have breast cancer during their lifetime and there is a good chance of recovery if it's detected early.Louise was training for the virtual London marathon when she was diagnosed with Lobular Breast Cancer in 2022. Lobular Breast Cancer is a distinct type of breast cancer that has different characteristics and growth from the more common Ductal Breast Cancer. After a double mastectomy, Louise runs topless, showing her mastectomy scars to help remove the stigma of flat closure surgery, promote body positivity and to raise awareness of Lobular Breast Cancer. In April she will make history and become the first woman ever in the world to run a marathon topless, and raising funds for Breast Cancer Now charity. Our topic today is sleep disturbances, and studies consistently show an increased likelihood of sleep problems during the menopausal transition. There are different types of sleep disturbances with many causes but have you ever thought about Sleep Disordered breathing? Did you know for instance that in Menopause we are 2-3 times more likely to have sleep disordered breathing and in post menopause this rises to 6 x more likely. Sleep disordered breathing, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea negatively affects us, both mentally and physically and can also impact our long term health. The women's health concern tell us that obstructive sleep apnoea is not just about loud snoring and gasping. Sleep apnoea in women can also manifest itself in other ways including headaches, insomnia, depression or anxiety and daytime fatigue. Not every woman with OSA will snore or snort loudly whilst asleep. Our guest this week is passionate about spreading awareness of the importance of breathing well at night, and says that a huge ‘ 90% of women with sleep apnoea go undiagnosed'. Jo Ingleby has worked in Community, University and Hospital Services and general dental practice since graduating over 30 years ago and has been in the same general dental practice for over 26 years. Over the past 15 years she has developed her interest in dental sleep medicine, making her first appliance for her very noisy snorer husband who she now no longer wants to throttle when he's asleep. Jo receives referrals from local dentists, sleep clinics, and referring specialists such as ENT consultants and has made hundreds of mandibular advancement appliances. Jo now tries to explore a patients individual risk factors and together they examine how to improve their breathing whilst asleep with options such as lifestyle, nasal breathing and mouth/ throat exercises. Jo earned the Masterclass Certification from the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2023 ,and teaches other dentists in how to identify and treat patients with sleep disordered breathing. Our guest on the podcast today is not only an author of the book, My Life On Pause, and she is also training to be a surgeon. Siobhan O'Sullivan was diagnosed at 31 years old with premature ovarian insufficiency, a condition where the ovaries stop functioning as they should under the age of 40. Siobhan ignored her diagnosis for a number of years feeling betrayed and ashamed by her body, and the impact it on her fertility and how Siobhan felt she was carrying around a big dirty secret. She felt isolated, it was only when she caught covid and had to isolate for 10 days that she was forced to confront her diagnosis and her book, My Life On Pause was born. She is now on a mission to break societal views of womanhood, youth and fertility, giving people a space to be unapologetically themselves. We talk about the impact of menopause in your 30's, confronting your own fertility, dating and socialising, the stigma of being in your 30's and single and how Siobhan is redefining her identity. We also ask Siobhan about being a female surgeon. In the Book Collective we continue reading Caitlin Moran's, What About Men? We are full of disbelief at chapter 11 The Manosphere and through chapter 12 The Fatherhood of Men it gave us a deeper understanding of our dads. You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book. March is Endometriosis Action month with the theme ‘Could it be Endometriosis?' Now if you want to see the World a little differently or would like to be in the moment and notice nature in all its beauty then today's guest can help you achieve this. Vanessa Miles is a photographer and from a young age she had an early passion for the environment which led her to work as a photographer on a Greenpeace ship and then to set up the UK's first independent picture agency in 1989, specialising in environmental issues. Her photography career has been varied but her passion for the environment has remained throughout. In 2020, largely as a response to the pandemic Vanessa created Well Image- a not for profit organisation using creative photography projects to improve wellbeing. The aims are very closely aligned to the NHS's 5 steps to wellbeing which are well researched. They are; engage with nature, connect socially with others, practise being present, increase activity and learn a new skill. Through running live online photography workshops, Vanessa has discovered that the courses are having the greatest impact on those who are most isolated which includes those experiencing high level of anxiety, whatever the cause, long term health conditions or disability. Vanessa imparts some practical tips to help us get the most from our camera phones and we learn how taking photos whilst out can help us be mindful and in the moment whilst also benefiting from being out in nature and connecting socially. Our guest on the podcast today is Melissa Neisler-Dickinson and we discuss how to navigate the impact that Menopause may have on our work lives, home lives and social lives. We begin this new series with two wonderful guests, Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall who together make up the folk duo Suthering. We talk about their new album (If we Turn Away), women and folk culture, how they created Tavistock Pride, our joint love for Bridget Christie and more. The fabulous duo are known for their chemistry and humour on stage, they effortlessly intertwine their important messages about the state of our climate, social conscience, and the importance of community and connecting with nature. They champion female characters, creating new narratives for women and unearthing the female heroines of folk and they even sing a song from their forthcoming second album for us. We are very lucky, here in Devon because in 2019 Julu and Heg moved from Bristol to Devon in a bid to create a more connected life on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. They delight in bringing communities together; they run two community choirs (Wheelhouse Folk Choir and The Great Sea Choir) and also run their company Suthering Singing Retreats which offers singing workshops for adults. In the Book Collective we begin reading Caitlin Moran's book, What About Men? We begin reading the prologue where she explores the reasoning and need for this book to be written. Jinty discusses flowers with names of genitalia and Lou has a new friend Mr Jones! There's a quote from Lou and an Action For Happiness WI calendar that you can all get involved with. Did you know that a recent report from the National Autistic Society found that of the 700,000 adults with Autism only 15% are in employment? We spoke to Lorraine Owodali back in series 7 about access to work funding available for people in the UK who have a disability or a health condition that means they need additional support to do their job. And today we welcome her back to find out more about what she does and how might a virtual PA support you? Over the last few years Lorraine has been PA to many neurodivergent individuals and is passionate about spreading the word about the Access to work funding, which might give people access to support from someone such as herself to manage the organisational side of their work or business. Lorraine is the Founder of Lorraine Freelance PA Ltd & a UK Virtual Assistant in Bristol supporting Business Owners. She is a natural organiser, and loves a ‘to-do list and the opportunity to support people in business and identify the tasks and areas they might need support with. Lorraine has over 20 years of combined Personal and Executive Assistant experience, working at a senior level predominately within Aerospace Engineering & Technology. She says that the role of a Virtual Assistant is so much more than providing excellent PA and marketing support, it's being able to think ahead, so you don't have to sweat the small stuff. In the Book Collective we review our book choices for 2023 and tell you what books we are putting on our Christmas list.
