Brenda Quinn and Richard Foster join Nathan to talk about Richard's new book, Learning Humility: A Year of Searching for a Vanishing Virtue.Show Notes[4:38] Dad, could you give us an overview?[9:38] Brenda, what was your journey like as you were reading the chapters and how did this work for you as a Christ follower and a pastor?[17:08] Dad, the humble mumble – could you explain that? How did spending this year and writing the book tie into that?[18:44] Brenda, as a pastor, I'm sure you get lots of compliments. How do you handle those when people have nice things to say about you?[21:21] A lot of people don't know how to say I'm sorry or own up to things. And that potentially stems from (a lack of) humility, doesn't it, that my ego is fragile enough that I can't handle critique?[22:45] Humility is really about freedom, would you agree?[25:21] You were in an environment (in the university) where people not only ask you, but they expect you to have the answers. And it can be the same in ministry. Brenda, in your context, where is the freedom you experience as you learn humility?[27:55] Dad, what surprised you in writing this book and spending the year on it?[29:45] What would you say to someone listening to this, or they've read the book, and they say “I'm in, I want to grow in humility”? What should they do? Where's a good place to start?[32:59] But we can certainly get better, right? There's improvement to be made.[33:43] For people who read the book, what would your hope be?[36:01] The thing I found really helpful about the book, that snuck up on me, was the allure. Why wouldn't I want that? Seeing it as an invitation to freedom, to become our true selves, the self that God created us to be.Resources Learning Humility: A Year of Searching for a Vanishing Virtue, by Richard Foster Humility, a Renovaré resource with selections from Learning Humility and Humility (by Andrew Murray)

Want to Suggest a Question? To submit a question for James, Richella, and Nate to consider discussing on Friends in Formation, email friends@renovare.org.Show NotesThree Listener Questions—[2:35] My question concerns a phrase I hear you use often in Renovaré — referring to people as “Image Bearers.” I must admit this always makes me sit up as it was not a phrase I had encountered much. At first I wondered if it was just a poetic way of referring to humanity, but am coming to realize it is an important truth and attitude but one I feel I have lacked - I think because my evangelical background had focused more on the 'depravity of Man' and begins viewing humanity (especially oneself) from a position of sinfulness, where the Image of God is lost and only restored in Christ. Specifically, HOW you have learnt to see yourself and others as Image Bearers, not just as a theological belief but in practice, and how doing this helps your spiritual formation.[17:46] I am currently reading The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (and trying, reasonably, to take my time with it), and next on the list is Streams of Living Water. Some dear church friends have begun to visit the churches of other friends — ones they know have a true, deep relationship with God — who attend churches of different denominations, in order to gain a better appreciation and understanding of their traditions. I find myself wishing that we, too, had many friends of other denominations who could not only serve as our safeguards, but with whom we could afterward discuss their traditions and church's values, and process those of our own more objectively and reflectively. We would greatly appreciate any suggestions you could offer as to how to go about this.[31:33] From two different listeners in ministry positions: What do you do when you feel like you are in a setting that God hasn't called you to? I'm a new, young clergy, I graduated seminary last year and feel like I've been placed (or have fallen into) a ministry appointment doing work that I'm not called to do but am doing because I have the skills to do this work. What can I do to not just survive during this difficult season but thrive? And have hope that God did indeed call me into a life of ministry and I'm here in this space for a reason? After serving several different churches as a pastor for about 9 years, I am almost 1 year removed from professional pastoral ministry. I chose to stop working as a pastor because the added strain of COVID left me burnt out, depressed, and codependent. I am very grateful to say that I am in a much better place now than I have been for quite some time. I am healthier physically, mentally, and emotionally. God has provided for my family financially. My family and I are connected to a wonderful church. I can definitely tell, even now, that God has brought me to this place as a blessing to provide me with the healing I desperately needed. At the same time, I am struggling with being “set aside” from ministry. I had a very clear calling experience a couple years before my pastoral ministry started. Being a pastor is the only real full-time job that I've had before now. I am currently working at a factory, and while it is a blessing in many ways, I find myself constantly looking to what might be next. Do you have any advice on how to better live into and accept where God has me right now? I have no doubt that I am where God wants me to be, but I still find myself constantly thinking about and planning for any and every possible “next thing.” Resources The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World, by John Mark Comer Streams of Living Water, by Richard Foster Clinging: The Experience of Prayer, by Emilie Griffin

A founding member of Richard J. Foster's spiritual renewal ministry, Renovaré, Smith is an ordained United Methodist Church minister and has served in various capacities in local churches. James joins Steve for a conversation about how our view of God transforms our understanding/experience of spiritual disciplines. With a toxic view of God, James says “spiritual formation not only won't help you, they might make you worse, you might turn them into legalism.” With a right view of God, “the disciplines take on a new understanding. Now it's not, ‘I'm doing these things to get this angry God to be less angry.' It's,‘I'm doing these things because I want to be with this God.'” Join the conversation about spiritual discernment as a way of life at www.LeadershipTransformations.org and consider participation in our online and in-person program offerings.

Every area of my life is exposed to the toxic element of feeling less-than. In my writing, I feel like others are more reflective and thoughtful. On staff at our church, I feel like everyone else in staff meeting is more spiritually mature. In volunteering, I believe the other leaders connect better with the students. So how can we handle feeling less-than in real life? Richella and I talk through The difference between insecurity and a lack of confidence and humility, Healthy and practical ways to quit striving, And how to embrace community when you feel less-than. Key Quotes “Insecurity is a feeling of a lack of assurance about my identity.” - Richella Parham “We want to avoid pride and arrogance, and we want to cultivate the Christian virtue of humility. And we think that self-deprecation and abasement is the way to get there.” - Richella Parham “If only we could think as highly of ourselves as God thinks of us.” - Richella Parham “Any plan to better ourselves based on distorted vision will not lead to the outcome we desire.” - Richella Parham “Our memories are present realities. Renovaré President Ted Harro discusses his recent pilgrimage with his son along the Camino de Santiago, including how its unexpected detours taught him the beauty of humility.Show Notes[1:00] You recently went on a pilgrimage. Can you discuss pilgrimage as a spiritual practice?[4:55] I love this question, where are you going and why? That sounds like a Jesus-type question. So is the point the destination, is this a kind of magical place that I go and I get a gold star from God for walking 300 miles? [6:23] So tell us – everything went wrong? Tell us about your experience. What was the plan?[10:08] When I heard that it didn't go as planned, there was a part of me that was really sad because I know you had been preparing for this and it was really important. But I also had a little smile on my face because I thought, “Oh, Ted's going to learn something, that you can only learn from having these disappointments, challenges.” Are there things you have been able to unpack from the experience that you'd be willing to share?[17:32] What did you do with the grief of watching Duncan go on?[19:50] Talking about humility, what were some of the new pieces that opened up for you?[23:40] How have you made it 55 years without bumping into your limitations? There is a gift and a blessing in bumping into those. In reading my dad's new book on humility that's coming out later this year, he reaches the conclusion that it's the foundational virtue for spiritual formation.[25:20] How has it been wearing for you as you've been home for a while now?[27:43] As we're talking, I'm reflecting on the six months – you have really come in with a high level of humility, as a learner trying to partner with God, and that's been neat to watch. Are there pieces in these months that you've learned, or things that might be helpful for people to know about Renovaré and your role?Resources Learning Humility: A Year of Searching for a Vanishing Virtue, by Richard Foster (coming out December 2022)
