The world lost the comic voice of Richard Lewis this week. Lewis takes a moment to acknowledge the loss of a comedy legend. The national news is still nonsense as what election season wouldn't be complete without another border crisis. Lewis also composed his thoughts enough to weigh in on Alabama's draconian IVF laws and in the process is reminded of a bit he performed over a decade ago that sadly still remains relevant today. But it's not all doom, Baseball is back and Lewis' has thoughts on his beloved Baltimore Orioles and even some March Madness is around the corner. The rants this week come from Missouri and Nebraska with stops in St. Louis, Springfield, and Omaha. Kieran Edward Richardson is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger, left-back, or central midfielder. But since leaving football behind, Kieran has finally been able to indulge his passion for the luxury watch market, investing in some incredible pieces. Kieran joins Steven to talk about not just his career in sport, but also his second act in life as a watch investor and dealer, and the value of stepping out of your comfort zone to maximise your gains in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS You never get anywhere if you stay in one place. You have to push forward, challenge yourself, and look for new ways to get uncomfortable, That's how you grow. There is always something you can be learning about the watch market. There are infinite variations and embellishments that can increase the value, sometimes in tiny increments. In this second part of a 2-part series, Rob speaks to Kieran as he opens up about what many people only ever dream about; being in the England premier league and his Manchester United football career. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kieran retired at 33. He found that the high pressured environment, particularly the politics off the field, took away his passion and love for the game. Luckily, Kieran had a supportive and guiding father who helped him make good investment choices when he started making big money so young. He learnt from the best and is now set for life as well as following his other passion, watches. Kieran has played with so many incredible players including the likes of Ronaldo, yet he says he believes the best football player he has ever played with wasPaul Scholes and that many other players would say the same. Kieran believes that Man United will always be the top contenders for the biggest club in England. They have the history, the fans and the accolades to back it up. Rob has such a passion for watches and gets asked a lot of questions about them too, especially in terms of investment, so he thought who better to bring on the podcast than his own friend and watch advisor Kieran. Kieran is a former premier league footballer but now owns the watch broker Broadwalk Group, he joins Rob today with his colleague Harry, listen in to find out all you need to know about watches and why they are such a unique and enjoyable investment option. Broadwalkgroup.com KEY TAKEAWAYS Kieran's father collected watches and this is where his initial passion came from. For his 16th birthday he got a Cartier tank watch which got him started and his passion has grown ever since. The watch market is crazy right now, there is low supply but people have money and they want to buy so any good investment is just going up and up! Watches are almost an asset class but they aren't taxed like one. If you are making a profit you should of course be paying tax on it but it's not as heavily regulated or taxed as many other assets. The low supply for many watches means you often have to be creative to get what you want. If you build a portfolio and relationship with a watch maker they are then more likely to sell to you when what you want becomes available. Watches are a unique investment opportunity, it gives you the chance to buy and own something you truly love but that you can also make money on too. Where we're going, we don't need roads . . . Early in the 1990's, Luke Chadwick was plucked from his home in Cambridge, and inducted into the world famous Manchester United academy. His peers in the youth team included Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea, Danny Pugh, and Kieran Richardson. Following a successful loan spell at Royal Antwerp, Luke was brought into the first team picture, eventually making his premiership debut in November 2000 in a 2-1 win against Middlesborough, replacing Dwight Yorke as a substitute. Luke was a part of the United first team until 2004, when he moved to West Ham United. Over the next 12 years Luke would go on to play over 500 games as a professional, across the top five divisions of English football. In May of last year, Luke spoke publicly for the first time about the abuse he had received for his appearance as a young footballer, and the impact it had on his mental health. Following the tweet that prompted Luke's admission, Gary Lineker publicly apologised for his role in the abuse Luke suffered, when Gary was part of a programme called 'They think it's all over', alongside Nick Hancock. We spoke to Luke about his time at Manchester United, the insecurities and anxieties he suffered as a result of the abuse, how he learnt to harness the power of vulnerability, and the work he is now doing with The Football Fun Factory. Today we talked about: - Kieran's career journey - from considering a life as an accountant, doctor or lawyer to choosing to be a physiotherapist - how the specialisation process helped - in particular the mentoring/peer review - how applying evidence-based practice can be a tricky balance - how ACL management is VERY surgical focussed in Australia and how this has been very slow to change in spite of the current research - how healthcare is very medically dominant - we (physiotherapists) would need to be a combined force to have a strong say - the evidence for and against manual therapy - are we throwing the baby out with the bathwater? - communicating with colleagues online. Could we do better? - the business of healthcare and how profits can impact on management. - ACL pathways. What is considered best management? How is ACL surgery/rehab funded in Australia? - whether or not physiotherapists could play a bigger role in musculoskeletal pain in primary health care settings to help reduce medical burden - why important intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration is so important - his top tips for new graduate physiotherapists You can find Kieran at: kieran@globalspecialistphysio.com https://www.instagram.com/global_specialist_physio/ https://www.facebook.com/globalspecialistphysio Check out his references at: www.globalspecialistphysio.com/acl

High-end watches, art and cars can be a great investment, that can withstand any recession. In this episode, Rob talks with Steven Sulley, and former professional footballer Kieran Richardson about their shared love for all things art, cars and watches. They talk through about how to get into each market, what to look for when investing your cash and how it's all about passion. If you're thinking of investing in assets to gain a return or you just love watches this is the episode for you. Key Takeaways How did you get into podcasts, Steven? I'd done the progressive property podcast training and thought I'd done a lot of public speaking anyway, so I'd enjoy it. It gives you validation to your brand. The trickle effect means I get to meet people, and it hopefully helps my business. Kieran talks through his motivation from talking with his friends on WhatsApp to start his own podcast. Some of the best podcasts are those that are just conversations. In the football world, did you feel the media sometimes misrepresented you, Kieran? Definitely sometimes, and it's not always true but the public read it and think its true. Now, footballers have their own social media and can control it better. If you are on a podcast you can reach millions of people without editing. We all have an interest in watches? You know if you have a Patec then there are certain things you know about that person. Kieran stated he had been collecting watches for seventeen years for the love of them. I buy them for the look rather than their function. I fell into selling watches to people and making people face smile. I love it. The moment someone has a watch that you recognise the conversation can start from there. We are all making a statement of who we are. So we try and meet other people who are into the same things as we are and can have a conversation with others. Just from a watch, you learn so much about someone. You can have a free watch because it goes up in value. Buy it for x amount and sell it for more. You can make money on them if you buy at the right time and the right brand. If you want to get into watches, what would you do? Kieran stated Rolexes are a solid investment. Rolex Daytona can really increase in their price over time. Paul Newmans, Paul Newman was worth 17 million, and it wasn't even in good condition. You need to find someone credible, who can open up the watch and check its authenticity. Get a service receipt so you have clarification that it's real. The value goes down without box and papers. You have to be passionate about it, so you can track the market. My money came from football? I'm lucky enough to buy watches through football. Sometimes you have to graft, so then you can do what you want to do. My father and my mom throughout my life they have owned several businesses and I've seen that through my family. I've always been into business. Footballers don't know what to do often when they retire and the PFA don't really do anything to support you. Once you start making a decent amount of money you stop thinking about the future. Kieran is not officially retired but if I got fit I could play in the Premier League. I have two young children and don't want to go around the world. Some footballers still want to play until they were 40. I got to retire on my own terms. What's your favourite modern car? Aventador, or F40, and F50. Aventador took Lamborghini to another level that looked more futuristic. Audi is helping in the building of it, so it is a tight car. We love both Ferrari and Lamborghini, especially vintage Ferrari. Some of these cars are built for the track Why do you think higher-end cars have gone up in value, and then dropped more recently? No one really knows cars have definitely dropped. Things go up and down all the time. Great cars will always come back around. If you wanted to buy a car? Limited production, and getting the right brand. Some Mercedes lose value straight off the lot. Definitely, start with buying the right brands( A car that they don't make any more for example). Also look for cars that have got a full service-history. Paying someone who has the experience to check over the car is essential. What about art, what things to do you look for? You have to be an expert in a specific strategy in the market. As far as investment is concerned to ask three questions: is the artist backed by a museum, gallery/agency and an art dealer? If it's yes to all three, then you're probably on for a winner. We deal in contemporary street art. These paintings are going for hundreds of a million. How do you get into painting? You have originals, which is about quality. The shadow head would be around 40-50K. From canvas to paper goes down in value. The limited editions, copies are going for 100's of thousands. It's all about supply and demand, 100 is not a lot of copies from one artist. Some people buy the copies and have the real one in storage. What is your motivation for buying art? Kieran Richardson and Steven Sulley: Interview on the love of cars and watches High-end watches, art and cars can be a great investment, that can withstand any recession. Definitely, buy the right brands. A car that they don't make any more for example. Cars have got a service history. That's the most important question when I speak to my clients. There is a different purchase if it's a pure investment, or if it's a decoration or if it fits into their portfolio. If you don't have the courage to spend tens of thousands a good limited edition is a solid place to start. Some people like to go big, it depends on your appetite for risk. Steven is in discussion with Kieran Richardson, ex-professional footballer and businessman at The Curtain Hotel in Shoreditch. They discuss how a career as an elite athlete playing in the premiership can be the foundation for success in business if you have the right attitude and approach to your football career. This engaging podcast is a fascinating insight into the career of a premiership footballer and successful businessman, listen in to find out about his journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS How did you get into football? I loved football at school, and as part of a youth club also played every day after school I played above my age because my best friend was older, and his Dad coached the team. I was part of the West Ham youth program and then was scouted. As a result, I left home at 14 to move to Manchester United to train and play for them. Changing schools was very positive, as the school in Manchester really believed in me and I achieved 10 GCSEs having only been predicted 3 by my previous London school. I made my debut for Manchester United in a pre-season friendly and went on to win the FA youth cup and the premier league with them. How did you deal with greatness and how did you remain humble and grounded? My parents played a massive part in my attitude and approach to be a successful footballer. Growing up I watched them as they ran their business and it was this background of understanding about hard work and thinking ahead that I used as a professional footballer Throughout my football career I was always thinking ahead and preparing for life after football. I bought a property each time I signed a new contract ensuring I had assets that would provide me with a passive income. How did you make the transition from footballer to businessman? The transition from football was easier for me because I already had lots of other things going on. I collected watches throughout the time I played football, so I had already planted the seeds for a different career. It's important to do something that you are passionate about and enjoy. To get the best out of yourself as a person its vital that you don't do something you don't want to do. For some people it's very clear what they are passionate about, for some people it's about looking around and trying things until you find your passion. What makes me happy is helping people to build their collections and the smile on their faces when I have sold them a watch they really wanted. How important is fitness for you? As footballers, we are programmed to do some sort of physical activity. I would recommend finding an activity that is about releasing energy as it will also relieve stress. When I was at my most fit I completed both football training and had a personal trainer to get me to the next level. You have to do extra to stay at the top of your game and be the best as an athlete in your field. BEST MOMENTS ‘Manchester was a great time for me' ‘Finally, after all that preparation to be on the pitch' ‘That's when I realised I had a special talent' ‘Footballers aren't educated enough' ‘If you don't enjoy your work you'll never see the best of yourself' ‘My philosophy is - you've got to enjoy it' ‘I just focus on the next step in my life' ‘You get what you put in' ‘If you want to be the best, you've got to want it more' ‘Somethings are meant for you' ‘Be the best you can be, I always want to improve myself and being close to God makes me happy' VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.woodburyhouseart.com/ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-steven-sulley-study-podcast/id1434828547?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. Aston Villa lost to the Baggies last weekend. And this weekend they've got the resurgent Manchester United, who they'll have to face without Ashley Westwood, Tom Cleverley, Kieran Richardson (yay) and heavens knows probably someone else. So, yeah, we'll talk about that. But let's look at some other stuff too. Namely, it's only two weeks until the January transfer window opens. With injuries seemingly never going away, what can Aston Villa do to make themselves better on what will likely be a limited budget? Will making Cleverley permanent be a thing that the club do, and if so, will it be the only thing? Is there any chance of a Fabian Delph for Mousa Dembele swap with Spurs? As always, you can watch on YouTube or subscribe to our audio on BlogTalk Radio, iTunes, Stitcher, or any other podcasting service you can think of!
