On Super Bowl Sunday during the Winter Olympics, Alyssa and Nadia discuss Lindsey Vonn competing in Olympic downhill days after tearing her ACL—and the crash that got her airlifted off the mountain again. They unpack injury risk, medical autonomy, and what elite athletes model for everyone watching.Nadia explains that Vonn tore her ACL last week, met with her medical team, and chose to race anyway. This morning she fell and was airlifted with a leg fracture. Nadia sees both sides: racing with a torn ACL is risky, but the crash looked like it came from clipping a gate—not purely the knee.Alyssa breaks down the ACL as the “packaging tape” that stabilizes the knee. Some athletes can compensate with strong surrounding muscles, but injury can disrupt proprioception and make the brain “shut off” muscle connection. The ACL might've limited her ability to load the left leg for a key right turn—though ice and countless variables could've been factors too.Nadia points to the pressure around Vonn: six-year retirement, huge comeback expectations, and tests suggesting she could do it. With that status, the medical team may have felt pushed to justify a “yes.” As Nadia puts it, no one could've stopped her—she was going to race.Alyssa connects this to her work with young gymnasts in competition season. Her role is to support goals while clearly assessing and communicating risk, not to override the athlete's choice. If they still want to compete after understanding the risks, she helps them do it as safely as possible. They shift to what athletes model for others. Nadia references Kerri Strug and how often gymnasts compete injured—brave, but sometimes concerning. Alyssa draws the key difference: Strug was a child under coach pressure, while Vonn is an adult making her own call. They close with Nadia's “personal Olympics”: her 12th year in gymnastics at 21. This season is about less stress, more fun, and enjoying leadership on e-board. With new teammates—including her sister—she's reliving milestones through fresh eyes.Happy Galentine's to all the listeners.TakeawaysThe ACL stabilizes the knee; tearing it can change control and confidence under high speed/load.Injury can disrupt proprioception and motor control, sometimes making movement less reliable.Elite athletes face intense external pressure to compete, which can bias decision-making around risk.Clinicians/medical teams must balance protecting health with supporting an athlete's goals.Adults have the right to make their own medical choices and accept calculated risk (“your body, your choice”).The Kerri Strug comparison isn't equal—she was a child under pressure; Vonn is an autonomous adult. In extreme sports, the biggest danger isn't reinjury—it's catastrophic, life-threatening trauma.Chapters0:10–0:48 – Introduction: Super Bowl Sunday and the Winter Olympics0:48–1:23 – Lindsey Vonn's Morning Injury1:23–2:37 – Last Week's ACL Tear and Decision to Compete2:37–4:09 – What Is an ACL?4:09–7:19 – Anatomy Lesson: Ligaments, Muscles, and Proprioception7:19–8:27 – How ACL Tears Happen and the Body's Response8:27–10:13 – Could She Have Avoided the Second Injury10:13–12:03 – The Mechanics of Her Fall: Did the ACL Play a Role?12:03–13:47 – The Pressure to Compete: Olympics and Comeback Stories13:47–15:19 – Working with Young Athletes: The Clinical Parallel15:19–16:39 – The Biggest Fear: Life-Threatening Injury16:39–18:10 – What Athletes Model: The Kerri Strug Comparison18:10–19:25 – Your Body, your Choice: Medical Autonomy19:25–20:10 – Hoping for Vonn's Recovery20:10–21:09 – Nadia's "Personal Olympics": Gymnastics Season Starts21:09–22:42 – What Makes It Fun: Team, Leadership, and Rewriting the Story22:42–23:49 – Galentine's Plans and Season Well-Wishes

In Part 2, Kassandra Ruelas takes us deeper into her journey — from rediscovering her love for the game under Coach Temas, to the fate-driven path that led her to Vial/Villarreal, to leaving home for Spain as a teenager. She shares what life, training, and tempo looked like overseas, how Spanish clubs develop players through structure and intelligence, and what it felt like to finally find her rhythm abroad. This episode also uncovers the hardest chapter of her career: tearing her ACL overseas, navigating the injury alone during a national blackout, and learning her younger sister tore her ACL the same week. Kassandra opens up about her recovery, her mindset, and what she hopes players and parents take away from her story.Key Talking Points• Finding joy again at Sting and the season that rebuilt her confidence.• Earning the first-ever North Texas Player Training Week invite in Spain.• How fate connected her to Vial after a controversial point error.• The Spanish development model: daily structure, zones, rondos, and tempo.• What life looked like: gym, training, Spanish class, film, late-night sessions.• Being “the foreigner” and the pressure of integrating into a new culture.• Highest levels she reached in Spain and how licensing works for minors.• The game where her ACL tore on a routine change of direction.• No trainer onsite, calling Christian at 4 a.m. Texas time for support.• The national blackout that blocked access to her MRI results.• Learning her sister tore her ACL days later.• Returning home for surgery and beginning the long recovery.• Rebuilding mentally while rediscovering who she is beyond soccer.• Leaving the door open for Spain but embracing uncertainty.• Message to parents: support but let players own conversations.• Message to players: attitude and curiosity separate you.Quotes from Kassandra• “Coach Temas brought the love back for the game.”• “Being the first North Texas player selected — I knew I had to go back.”• “I was jumping the entire night when they announced I was going to Spain.”• “In Spain, the ball does the work. The tempo is smarter, not just faster.”• “I spoke Spanish, but I was still the foreigner. That pressure stays with you.”• “I knew the moment it happened — something was wrong with my knee.”• “I was alone in the locker room with no trainer. I just wanted my mom.”• “The blackout hit the day my MRI came in. I couldn't talk to anyone.”• “Two days later, my sister tore her ACL too. It didn't feel real.”• “Right now I'm learning who I am outside of soccer.”• “Curiosity and attitude — those two things take you farther than talent.”Connect with Kassandra

BT dives into the shocking news of Patrick Mahomes' torn ACL, questioning the future trajectory of his Hall-of-Fame career. He argues that Mahomes' "all-world production" had already "stagnated" over the last three seasons, noting a sharp drop in touchdown totals and a concerning reliance on athleticism that an ACL injury—and a "thickish" build—might permanently compromise. Tierney suggests that the injury, which typically requires a 9–12 month recovery, could keep Mahomes off the field past Week 1 of next season. The discussion points to the decline of his supporting cast (Travis Kelce, post-Tyreek Hill) and the team's confounding offensive struggles as contributing factors to his recent "rough time scoring," raising the question: Can Mahomes return to his MVP form, or is the Chiefs' dynasty officially over?
In this episode, you'll hear a fired-up deep dive on answering an ACLers question after another ACL injury. She tells about her thorough approach to healing and recovery and the nonlinear path to returning to running injury-free, all the way to returning to her ultimate goal: running the Boston Marathon, for her 13th time. Sapper was so thoughtful and complete through this process—"I wanted to get a PR in recovery," she says—she has a lot of great experience and wisdom to share. Julie Sapper is part of the super coaching and podcasting duo behind Run Farther and Faster, with Lisa Levin. For the the past four years, I've teamed with with Sapper and Levin to host panel discussions over Boston Marathon weekend. Now I get to have Sapper telling this inspiring part of her running story. And, next week's episode features Levin, telling her running story. Stay tuned! Send us a textKyrie Irving's ACL tear represents a devastating blow to the Dallas Mavericks' championship aspirations and raises serious questions about his future playing style. The injury typically requires 6-12 months of recovery time, potentially sidelining Irving until next season's playoffs and fundamentally altering how the NBA's most skilled player approaches the game.• ACL tears have affected NBA stars differently – Klay Thompson, Derrick Rose, Kyle Lowry, and Kobe Bryant all returned but with varied success• Irving's unique playing style depends heavily on quick cuts, sharp pivots and explosive movements that may be compromised after recovery• This could potentially change public perception of Irving, moving him from "villain" to sympathetic figure worthy of support• Despite the setback, there's hope Irving can adapt his game similar to how Kobe did after his Achilles injury• The Mavericks' championship window remains possible if Irving returns effectively, Anthony Davis stays healthy, and the team maintains its corePlease like, subscribe, comment, and tell anyone who's anyone about the show. The Galaxy had won eight games in 2023 and seemed about as far from the MLS Cup as their 13th-place finish in the West indicated. That's what makes it all the crazier that on Saturday night, the Galaxy played their best game of the season. They went toe-to-toe with the Seattle Sounders, besting them by a score of 1-0 to advance to the MLS Cup. But the Galaxy lost the true heartbeat of the team when Riqui Puig was ruled out for the final game with an ACL Tear. But what Puig did in his 90-plus minutes against the Sounders is what legends are made of. Hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter want to talk about the game against Seattle and why this version of the Galaxy was as complete as you can get. And that's way different from how they started the season. Join us for nearly 90 minutes of Galaxy talk during an MLS Cup week. These don't happen very often. -- Corner of the Galaxy is kicking off Season 16, just a few shows past show no. 1,100! And we can't wait to show you everything we've got in store for 2024! Exciting changes are in store for Corner of the Galaxy! We're unveiling a brand new anthem, composed by Ray Plaza, and a refreshed look and feel for the podcast. The Atlanta Braves suffered another major injury blow, this one eerily reminiscent of a place they've been before. For the second time in three years, star right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered a torn ACL and is done for the season. Grant McAuley discusses the challenges this latest injury present for both Acuña and the club and shares the reaction of several of his Braves teammates. Austin Riley, Sean Murphy, Michael Harris II and Adam Duvall all weigh in on the unfortunate news while manager Brian Snitker talks about where his club goes from here without their dynamic leadoff hitter. You'll also hear from Braves color analyst C.J. Nitkowski of Bally Sports, who provides some insights on where the Braves stand at the Memorial Day checkpoint -- in an interview recorded prior to the Acuña injury. Plus, Geoff Ponts of Baseball America helps size up the Atlanta minor league system and some of the top arms who could make an impact in the big leagues or a big trade later this summer. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Every episode of the show and more great Braves coverage is available at FromTheDiamond.com.
