Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. This week, we begin a two-part series on vintage chronographs. Apparently, our listeners like hearing about these complicated watches that measure elapsed time. Note that the watch content starts after approximately 25 minutes.Vintage chronographs are a special category of watches. They're complex, often fragile, and strangely addictive! In this episode, we'll begin exploring what makes them so alluring. In our next installment, we'll get specific on models, movements, and what to look out for when buying.HandgelenkskontrolleOur episode begins with a discussion about Super Bowl LIX. We then discuss more TV shows. Mike mentions a recent visit to Roseberys, a London-based auction house, where he attended a preview and witnessed some interesting behavior. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his cherished Rolex Datejust 1600 with a blue dial. Balazs is enjoying his Rolex Submariner 5513, which he recently featured in a fantastic article.Vintage chronographsWe then begin discussing our main topic — why we are so attracted to chronographs. We began our collecting journeys wanting these types of watches but found ourselves attracted to pieces from different decades. Mike leaped into the '60s, while Balazs enjoyed the '40s, '50s, and '70s. We end our episode by mentioning iconic models, including the Omega Speedmaster, Rolex Daytona, Breitling Navitimer, Heuer Carrera, and Universal Genève Compax. Stay tuned for next week's podcast in which we uncover more details!Thank you for listening to this week's edition of Fratello On Air. Although it didn't start out that way, in recent years, the Rolex Daytona has grown to become the most sought-after luxury chronograph. As a result, Daytona watches are almost impossible to find at Rolex authorized dealers and command hefty premiums on the secondary market. Whether you already own a Daytona and want something else or are waiting for the right time to buy one, plenty of other luxury chronograph watches are available that offer similar designs to Rolex's flagship chronograph . With that in mind, we've compiled a list of what we think are the best Rolex Daytona alternative watches. Note, these Daytona alternatives are not necessarily less expensive. To keep things in the luxury realm, we've only picked premium chronograph watches made by other high-end watch brands. If you like what you're listening to please let us know! One of the most memorable gold Rolex releases in recent years was 2023's white gold Le Mans Daytona, celebrating the famous racetrack's 100th anniversary. Featuring a 24-hour totalizer instead of the Daytona's typical 12-hour one, and the infamous "Paul Newman" subdial typeface, the Le Mans Daytona was also special because of its exhibition caseback--something Rolex had previously only put on the platinum Daytona and Cellini Prince. For 2024, Rolex quietly replaced it with an otherwise identical yellow gold Le Mans Daytona, and it's one of the hottest watches of the year.If you like what you're listening to please let us know! Join Rob as he explores the psychology of designer purchases, from clothes to watches to cars. He talks about the delicate balance between quality investments and wasteful spending and by sharing personal experiences, stories and real world examples, Rob reveals how true wealth often manifests in subtlety. KEY TAKEAWAYS High-end brands like Patek Philippe and Hermès create artificial scarcity and complex buying processes to maintain exclusivity and increase demand, requiring significant previous purchases to access their most coveted items.  True quality investment pieces often have no visible logos and maintain or increase in value over time, while items covered in obvious branding typically depreciate rapidly.  Ferrari maintains brand value through strict control, even banning celebrities like Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian who violate their standards for car modification and resale.  Luxury watches like Patek Philippe can serve as both investment vehicles and networking tools, opening doors to valuable business connections.  In the luxury car market, value isn't always about the badge - sometimes less prestigious brands offer better performance and value (like Audi RSQ8 vs. Lamborghini Urus).  Expensive designer clothes with prominent logos often indicate insecurity rather than wealth, while truly wealthy individuals tend to prefer understated, high-quality pieces.   BEST MOMENTS "If you want to go broke, buy brands. If you want to get rich, build a brand." "A Rolex Daytona is a better savings account than a savings account and a better door opener than a crowbar." "For less than an Urus, I got an RSQ8, which looks better than an Urus and a 992 Turbo S, which is the fastest car out of anything except two, three and five million pound hypercars."    VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Pierre Biver of J.C. Biver, Jasper Lifering of Amsterdam Vintage Watches, and Erik Gustafson of Hairspring Watches join me in three separate conversations to provide a holistic overview of stone dials.Over the past few years, stone dials have seemingly popped up everywhere. More modern brands are making them. At the same time, vintage examples have become more collectible and jumped in price considerably. But stone dials are still a relatively undiscovered corner of watch collecting. They're not well understood on the vintage or modern side.So I wanted to cover them on Hodinkee. Typically, we'd do this by talking to a few experts and synthesizing those conversations into an in-depth article. But I decided to try something different this time around, hitting record on three conversations to learn about modern stone dial production, vintage collecting, and everything in between. Our first conversation is with Pierre Biver, who started J.C. Biver with his father Jean-Claude Biver last year. Each of their releases has included a stone dial option. Then, I talk with two dealers. First is Jasper Lijfering of Amsterdam Vintage Watches, a vintage dealer and trained gemologist. Second is Erik Gustafson of Hairspring Watches, who has helped grow the scholarship around stone dials. We dive into the recent discussion around Rolex "obsidian" dials; as we'll discuss, this name isn't quite accurate and it shows how much there still is to learn about vintage watches, and stone dials in particular.I hope all three conversations give you a better understanding of stone dials. Note that I've tried to include links to an example of all stone dials mentioned in the audio, so check the show notes below if you're not sure what a particular stone looks like.Show Notes1:23: Hands-On: The Biver Automatique2:14: Hands-On: The Biver Carillon Tourbillon19:30: Hands-On: The Berneron Mirage Realizes Its Creator's Uncompromising Vision24:00: Hands-On: Baltic Prismic Stone Dial Limited Editions31:54: Amsterdam Vintage Watches33:35: In-Depth: How Piaget Defined The 1970s, And How It Can Do The Same Today38:15: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Malachite dial39:16: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Coral dial41:53: Dr. Helmut Crott's The Dial42:45: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with black Onyx dial43:15: Example of a Piaget Protocole with Lapis Lazuli dial43:28: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Tiger's Eye dial45:20: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Green Jasper dial46:30: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Pyramid Onyx dial46:55: Jasper's white gold Datejust with Red Jasper dial52:05: Rolex Day-Date with 'Bloodstone' dial54:10: Hairspring Watches56:00: Hairspring's post about the "Obsidian" dial Rolex Datejust58:45: Recapping The Glamorous Day-Date Sale At Phillips (That Time The Average Day-Date Sold For $110,580)1:00:00: "Obsidian" Rolex at Phillips in 20201:02:30: Rolex Day-Date Khanjar with "Obsidian" dial that Loupe This described as "although it looks like an onyx stone dial, after closer inspection it appears the dial is a painted/ lacquer dial."1:11:37: Introducing: Audemars Piguet Brings Back The Starwheel (Live Pics) (including pics of a tropical Starwheel)1:11:58: Rolex Daytona ref. 116500 "Lemon" dial

Do you want to work with us on a timepiece? email us support@chriswarnes.com In today's review, I'm diving deep into one of the most iconic and coveted pieces in Rolex's Daytona collection – the Rolex Daytona Platinum Ice Blue 126506. Now, full disclosure: I'm not usually a big Daytona fan and rarely wear them. But this one? It's an exception, and here's why. This watch is substantial—being crafted in platinum, it's much heavier than standard stainless steel sports models like the 116500LN or 126500LN Daytona. In person, it's simply striking, an absolute show-stopper worthy of its six-figure market price. The open case back on the 126506 is a feature that Rolex rarely gifts us, allowing a stunning view of the movement. And let's talk about those sub-dials: there's a subtle difference in the brown color on this model compared to previous versions, giving it a unique, elegant edge. The 116 had options for two dial styles, with or without baguette brown sub-dials. But on the 126506, the dials are consistent, offering either style with or without baguettes. Personally, I have a slight preference for the 116, but this piece has truly grown on me. This Daytona feels stealthy, classy, and elegant with its 40mm size and understated appearance—especially compared to, say, the bolder “John Mayer” Daytona. It doesn't scream six figures, which I appreciate. Rolex's decision to include the glass case back, sacrificing a bit of water resistance, was a bold move. Let's be real: no one's diving in this beauty. So, what do we think of this masterpiece? I'm rating it a 9.3 out of 10—one of the highest scores I've given, even topping the “White Panda” at an 8. Want one? Be prepared to wait; getting one from an AD is no easy feat! Tune in and let me know in the comments: What would you rate the Daytona Platinum Ice Blue 126506? Bezel's Quaid Walker: 'We now have a correction in the watch market'

The Glossy Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2024 42:42

On this week's episode of the Glossy Podcast, we talk with Quaid Walker, the co-founder and CEO of the online watch marketplace Bezel. Bezel, like the watch market in general, has seen significant growth over the last three years. It now boasts over $500 million worth of watches coming through its marketplace annually. Millions of new watch enthusiasts are getting into the market for the first time, and secondhand marketplaces like Bezel are among the best entry points for those new customers. Walker described the early pandemic years as “a massive bull run for all collectibles.” During that period, a ceramic Rolex Daytona in the “panda” colorway, which retailed for around $13,500, was selling on the secondhand market for over $55,000. It's since evened out somewhat to around $32,000, reflecting the broader market which has also slowed from the mania of the early 2020s. “What happened was you got a lot of new buyers entering the market who got really interested in watches,” Walker said. “And now that we have a correction in the market, you have the buyers who got into it because they love watches excited because prices are coming down and they can finally buy some of the watches they've lusted after. But then the buyers who were in it for the investment side are leaving the market.” The way Walker sees it, people come to Bezel — and similar pre-owned marketplaces for luxury goods — for two reasons. Either they want a luxury product that they can't afford new, in which case they buy something for below retail price, or they are looking for something that can't be found new because it's vintage or limited edition, in which case they buy something over retail price. “Our job is to cater the experience for both of those customers,” Walker said. “Our promise to buyers is that we authenticate everything, we make sure everything is working the way it should, and we take a customer experience that was otherwise frustrating and make it feel accessible, quick, thoughtful and attentive.”

Fratello On Air returns with an on-location episode where we discuss overpriced vintage watches. Specifically, we bring up models from Tudor, Cartier, Seiko, and Rolex. Yes, these are fighting words, but someone had to say them! We hope you enjoy the episode! This week, we're together in London as Balazs traveled in for work. Close listeners on either side of Balazs' hotel room must have thought it was a nerd convention, but, no, it was just another recording of Fratello On Air! We focus on overpriced vintage watches in this episode and question several stalwarts. We don't dislike these watches, but we do feel that there are better options for the money.HandgelenkskontrolleFor those who are interested, our banter lasts roughly 15 minutes. Do note that there's a fair amount of watch content within this beginning portion. Both co-hosts brought a selection of watches for a bit of off-air show-and-tell. As far as gifts, the long-awaited, never-worn American flag Stance socks are finally with Balazs. Mike, on the other hand, is overjoyed about receiving a jar of Erõs Pista, a spicy Hungarian pepper sauce. Regarding watches, Mike is sporting his sterling silver Omega 30T2 on a new GLC fixed lug strap that Balazs has brought. Balazs has chosen a gorgeous Angelus 250 with a 33.5mm case.Overpriced Vintage WatchesNow it's time for controversy as we discuss four overpriced vintage watches. Let's make something very clear; we're fans of these watches. Heck, some of us even own several of the picks. However, the current market prices have reached a level where there are better options. Of course, if money is no option, then spend away! We discuss:The Tudor Big Block, a Rolex family chronograph with the venerable Valjoux 7750Vintage Cartier, primarily due to their use of mundane movementsThe Seiko 6138-8020 "Panda," and oft-faked watch within a sea of other great Seiko chronographsThe almighty Rolex Daytona, a lovely watch but there are so many other lovely Valjoux 72-powered chronographsWe hope you enjoyed today's episode. Stay tuned for more and if you have any additional show ideas, please feel free to let us know! Thank you for listening.

There's a reason that Rolex is often referred to as King — this Swiss watchmaking giant dominates the luxury watch space. Regardless of where you are in the world, the brand is shorthand for success, prestige, and excellence. While it's no secret that Rolex is the most popular high-end watch company (by far), we often get asked which models in Rolex's catalog stand out as the most desirable. What better way to celebrate the 50th episode of the On the Dogwatch podcast than to have a conversation with someone who has provided steadfast support and positive energy, and has become the de facto patron saint of the podcast, James Cox. Many listeners will remember when James joined us for Episode #28 and told the story of his relationship with Paul Newman, and how he was given Newman's Rolex Daytona watch. In our conversation today we pick up where we left off and talk about how funds from the sale of the Paul Newman have been used in projects such as the preservation of the Westfjords of Iceland, the ecology of salmon in the Pacific northwest, and the Kiss the Ground movie project. Listeners are encouraged to learn more at the Nell Newman Foundation, and at Myfriendjames.com. In addition, James and I also discuss the year I have spent with James's black dial Daytona, and what can be learned when people connect through the sharing of a simple object like a watch. In the end, James gives us plenty to think about regarding how we dedicate ourselves to making contributions and positive change.

Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. In this installment, Balazs and Mike hit on two topics. We start with the fact that Swatch Group has no intentions of following Rolex into the CPO market. Next, we talk about a recent article highlighting concerns about a questionable auction that took place in 2018. Sit back and relax while we work the mics.Yes, it's another week and that means another podcast. This time we're talking more about CPO programs and a questionable auction. Balazs is taking care of business in Karlsruhe and Mike has literally just arrived back in Frankfurt. The two kick off with a number of topics. Balazs mentions the upcoming Lego Ford GT, which features a working engine. Balazs also mentions that he's decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Adidas Stan Smith Lux. Hoch leben! Finally, we discuss TV. Balazs is watching BMF and Mike just finished season 2 of The White Lotus.Handgelenks KontrolleBefore hitting the main topics on used watches and a questionable auction, we go through our Handgelenks Kontrolle. Mike is wearing his cherished Rolex Datejust 1600. This time, however, he has it on a new-to-him folded Oyster 7836 bracelet with 258 end links. He recently picked it up in Florida during a visit with our friend, Eric Wind. Will it stay on or will the Jubille return? Time will tell. Balazs is sporting his newly received Grand Seiko SBGA439. He loves it but is having a tough time getting the bracelet to fit and is also struggling with reflections during photographs.A questionable auction and Swatch Group stays away from CPOWe kick off the main section with a brief mention that Rolex is increasing prices yet again. Apparently, the increase is capped at "around" 2.5%, but that brings prices up by roughly 20% since the beginning of the pandemic. Yikes! Next, Balazs discusses an article about Swatch Group and that Nick Hayek will not be following Rolex into the used market any time soon. We think that's smart! Finally, we discuss a questionable auction that took place in 2018 related to the so-called "Unicorn" Rolex Daytona. As always, thanks for listening. If you have any suggestions for a future episode, please feel free to let us know!

Fratello On Air is back with a new episode and this time, we discuss the watch market. In the background, we bring up a couple of reports that have recently been published. There are some interesting numbers, but the market hasn't fallen apart to the extent where secondary prices are reaching retail. Will they? The watch market is in a bit of turmoil lately as prices for hype watches have been on a 6-month downtrend. We discuss the recent third-quarter watch market report published by Morgan Stanley and go through some interesting and telling figures. The recent Chrono24 watch report contains some interesting figures as well. It collectively blows our minds how popular Rolex is versus all other brands.Handgelenks KontrolleThe Handgelnks Kontrolle this episode is on point! Balazs is sporting the new Doxa Army with green ceramic and bronze bezel. He declares it a winner and it seems that most people like the surprising color combination! Mike is wearing his Omega Speedmaster X-33 1st generation on an Artem strap. It has just returned from a €30 battery change and Mike vows to wear it more frequently. The Watch MarketLet's start by saying that neither of us is predicting that the watch market is going to crash and burn to the point where Rolex Daytona models will be below retail. However, we do think that there are some serious macro headwinds that will continue to put pressure on the typical speculative watches. In the end, if it means that people will stand a chance to buy watches at retail, we're all for it and think it's actually more healthy than an overheated scenario. Funnily enough, if all of the hype watches were more available, neither of us would run out to buy something. If we did, though, the GMT-Master II with Pepsi Bezel ranks as the most likely candidate. Thanks again for listening! We hope you enjoyed the show and as always, feel free to let us know if there's a topic you'd like us to discuss!

A few years back, I was on a gondola ride in Venice and our gondolier pointed out the top floor of the Aman Venice – Papadopoli Palazzo. He looked at us and said, “Do you see the lights on the top floor? The owner of that building turned it into an Aman hotel and kept the top floors as his home. And he's a Count.” Now, I get super intrigued by this stuff so of course I did extensive research and found out that while he currently lives at the top floor with this family, that he also grew up in that home. Giberto comes from an aristocratic upbringing which to me, meant that there had to be some sort of collections that have been kept in the family. Well, I sure was correct. Count Giberto has some amazing original oil paintings of his ancestors, an incredible book collection with family ties, antiques, you name it. Not only that, but he has an amazing collection of Murano glass, a lot of which he has designed himself. However, growing up around these items, I was curious to find out whether Giberto thought of himself as a collector. Please enjoy, Count Giberto for Collectors Gene Radio.
