Pods don't come more special than this one. And teams don't come more special than United's legendary 2013/14 promotion-winning team. To celebrate a whole decade since Delano day, "Are you not entertained?", "Donaldson with a curler" and 10 minutes of stoppage time that felt like an hour, we've put together a two-part special looking back at that season month-by-month. Alongside Julian, Jack, Tom and Jordan reminiscing on their memories of that year, we had the pleasure of speaking to key members of that team that finally took the U's back into the football league after an agonising 9 year absence. Episode Two starts at the turn of the year, as Luton had just overtaken the U's in the league. We go through the poor run of form at the start of 2014, how the FA Trophy run helped us prepare for the play off, and then go in-depth for a few of the biggest moments in the club's history as we finally win promotion back to the Football League on that glorious afternoon in the sunshine at Wembley. Thanks very much to Richard Money, Tom Champion, Kwesi Appiah, Josh Coulson, Delano Sam-Yorke, Harrison Dunk, Luke Chadwick and Doug Shulman for their time and contributions. To help clarify the speaking voices, the first time each person speaks in this episode is listed below: Kwesi Appiah: 6:50 Tom Champion: 8:40 Richard Money: 12:50 Josh Coulson: 15:00 Luke Chadwick: 25:10 Delano Sam-Yorke: 27:25 Doug Shulman: 35:00 There will be five episodes in this series, including standalone interviews with our contributors, so subscribe to our website and get all our pods and posts straight to your inbox: www.undertheabbeystand.com And get in touch with the pod here: Socials: @AbbeyStandPod and @UnderTheAbbeyStand Email: hello@undertheabbeystand.com

Known for his dedication and perseverance, he was hugely admired for his work ethic, versatility, and ability to create scoring opportunities. In this episode we talk about Luke's football career, from grassroots schoolboy to his debut for Manchester United and beyond, and the lessons he learned from his time under Sir Alex Ferguson. Luke also talks really openly about his career highs and lows and how difficult he found it coming to terms with the end of his career and loss of identity, and how he ultimately had to seek help and learn to be vulnerable and grieve. There are so many similarities between a lifelong career in sport and a career as a first responder. Post-retirement, Luke has become a respected figure in football analysis and commentary, sharing his valuable insights and experiences, and is a Director of The Football Fun Factory where their mission is to use the nation's passion for football as a vehicle for child development, and where the focus isn't simply on development or progression… they focus on having fun, and you can find out more, and potentially own your own Football Fun Factory franchise, by contacting Luke on luke@thefootballfunfactory.co.uk and mention the podcast! Ex-Manchester United football player Luke Chadwick played over 460 professional games for clubs such as United, West Ham, Stoke and others before retiring and beginning his coaching journey. Luke was a young boy who dreamed of running out at Old Trafford. But the reality of the pressure of being a professional and everything revolving around winning created an environment that took its toll. His own personal experiences within professional football have served to reinforce his approach to making youth football(soccer) a better experience for kids. He joined the Football Fun Factory as a director in 2019, and his goal is to ensure Football Fun Factory coaches place the emphasis on fun and enjoyment, over technical development and progression and ensure that the children develop a healthy and positive relationship with football that will last a lifetime. In our discussion today we speak about the genius of leaders such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Keane, the dangerous mentality on professional sports in terms of "manning up" when it comes to mental health issues, and his transition into coaching. You will hear him light up as he discusses his passion for working with grassroots players and focusing on personal development and joy! Where we're going, we don't need roads . . .  Early in the 1990's, Luke Chadwick was plucked from his home in Cambridge, and inducted into the world famous Manchester United academy. His peers in the youth team included Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea, Danny Pugh, and Kieran Richardson. Following a successful loan spell at Royal Antwerp, Luke was brought into the first team picture, eventually making his premiership debut in November 2000 in a 2-1 win against Middlesborough, replacing Dwight Yorke as a substitute.  Luke was a part of the United first team until 2004, when he moved to West Ham United. Over the next 12 years Luke would go on to play over 500 games as a professional, across the top five divisions of English football. In May of last year, Luke spoke publicly for the first time about the abuse he had received for his appearance as a young footballer, and the impact it had on his mental health. Following the tweet that prompted Luke's admission, Gary Lineker publicly apologised for his role in the abuse Luke suffered, when Gary was part of a programme called 'They think it's all over', alongside Nick Hancock.  We spoke to Luke about his time at Manchester United, the insecurities and anxieties he suffered as a result of the abuse, how he learnt to harness the power of vulnerability, and the work he is now doing with The Football Fun Factory.  To find out more about The Football Fun Factory, head to their website: https://www.thefootballfunfactory.co.uk/ If you enjoy this episode, or any of our other episodes, please pop over to apple podcasts, and give us a rating and a review.  https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/man-marking/id1506661828 You can find us on Twitter @marking_man and don't forget to use the hashtag #WheresTheTalkingLads  If you have been affected by any of the themes discussed in today's episode, we have listed some organisations below who are there if you need to talk: Samaritans  Call 116 132 for free https://www.samaritans.org/ Papyrus UK Call 0800 068 41 41 Papyrus Website CALM ZONE 0800 58 58 58 https://www.thecalmzone.net/help/helpline/ MIND 0300 123 3393 https://www.mind.org.uk/ The Kaleidoscope Plus Group 0800 059 0123 https://www.kaleidoscopeplus.org.uk/

Playing for the world's biggest football club alongside such legendary names as Giggs, Beckham, Scholes and Keane should have been a dream for any young footballer, but thanks to being ridiculed on a prime time TV show, for a teenage Luke Chadwick there was a time it was anything but. In this episode, Luke shares his feelings of embarrassment and hurt, and how this led to him isolating himself when not playing. But his journey also led him to discover his self worth and learn to love himself and Luke now shares this message of positive attitude, respect, team work and fun in his coaching company, the Football Fun Factory. We couldn't let the opportunity pass without asking him about the best player he has played with, what it was like to be captained by Roy Keane and whether he's ever been subjected to the Fergie Hairdryer?
