Everytime I look at the stream analytics I see hits from Hutchinson KS. I don't know who you are but thank you. I'm hitting newer music today was trying for nothing more than a year old and most of it is newer than that. Hip Hop joints from Kendrick, Doechii, Skyzoo, Little Simz, Benny The Butcher, Blu, Dejhha, Chance The Rapper. We've even got new music from old favorites like Ice Cube, Snoop, Busta Rhymes, Killa Mike, Common and Wu-Tang. Hopefully it's OK.
In this rundown episode, Jenn and Daren catch up on important happenings from the last few weeks. In the first segment, they recap the high points of Megan Thee Stallion's “HISS” and Nicki Minaj's failure of a response “Big Foot.” In the second segment, Jenn and Daren highlight the wins Black folx took home from the 2024 Grammys and Oscars, celebrating the achievements of artists such as Victoria Monet, Coco Jones, and Samara Joy. In turn they question the status of a music industry where Killa Mike wins top rap honors and Jay-Z is awarded a Dr. Dre Global Impact award. On the film side, they lament an industry still awarding Black women for playing mammies (Da'Vine Joy Randolph from “The Holdovers”), finding a home for “I Don't Unbend My Elbows Barbie” (aka Issa Rae), and allowing Tyler Perry to continue making movies like Tyler Perry's “Mea Culpa.” In the third segment, they close things out on a positive note, spotlighting a recent $100M award granted to Spelman College and a donation made in the name of supporting Black college students from Lloyd & Janice Dong. www.ThatBlackCouple.com FB: www.facebook.com/ThatBlackCouple Twitter: www.twitter.com/ThatBlkCouple Instagram: www.instagram.com/thatblkcouple iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/that-black-couple-podcast/id1284072220?mt=2 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2M7GIQlWxG05gGq0bpBwma?si=xSkjzK0BRJW51rjyl3DWvw Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/podcast/that-black-couple Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/That-Black-Couple-Podcast/dp/B0C12M7Q34/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/that-black-couple-podcast/PC:1000149014 SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/thatblackcouple Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL2ZlZWRzLnNvdW5kY2xvdWQuY29tL3VzZXJzL3NvdW5kY2xvdWQ6dXNlcnM6Mjc2MDExMzcwL3NvdW5kcy5yc3M Email: ThatBLKCouple@gmail.com Podcast Summary: This is an accidentally funny podcast about the realities of Blackness and adult life. We do “adult” differently. We are That Black Couple. Our goal is to create a space for Black millennials to discuss and embody adult life on their own terms. We aren't beholden to “traditional” gender or parenting roles, queerness is fluid and present in the ways we show up in our relationships and in the world, and we want to build community with other 30-something Black folx who are trying to figure this ish out.

This week on System Check we are saying farewell to 2020 and hello to 2021 with our first System Check Book Club. Your hosts Melissa and Dorian first aired this Book Club as a Live Event (https://www.thenation.com/article/society/system-check-live-video/) on YouTube and Facebook just in time for holiday reading. While the original show was over two hours long (https://www.facebook.com/7629206115/videos/199505105156343) , for our podcast this week we decided to share with you some of the highlights from the live event. First up is Maria Hinojosa (https://www.futuromediagroup.org/maria-hinojosa/) , journalist , storyteller and founder of Futuro Media Group. She is the host and executive producer of the brilliant and informative weekly NPR show Latino USA, and anchor of the Emmy Award-winning talk show Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One. Her latest book, Once I Was You: a Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America (https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Once-I-Was-You/Maria-Hinojosa/9781982128654) was published by Atria Books and received well-earned, rave reviews this fall. We talk with her about the system of immigration, particularly the cruel and harmful practices of family separation of young immigrant children from their parents, the role of state agents who insist they are simply “doing their job” as well as those brave enough to resist, and the personal origins of her book title. Next we speak with Rumaan Alam (https://rumaanalam.com/) , author of the gripping, searing and suspenseful novel Leave The World Behind (https://www.harpercollins.com/products/leave-the-world-behind-rumaan-alam?variant=32123411365922&utm_source=aps&utm_medium=athrweb&utm_campaign=aps) . With bylines in many places including The Nation (https://www.thenation.com/authors/rumaan-alam/) , Alam’s fictional characters in his third novel feel as though they are grappling with the dystopia of their new domestic lives, revealing deep-seated racism, and coping with the death-dealing consequences of environmental and political disaster. Sound familiar? Leave the World Behind was a finalist for this year’s National Book Award and has already been optioned by Netflix. Although written in 2018 and 2019, it seems like the year 2020 released the lived experience version of this novel. Up next is a powerful, brutal, and insightful new book by New York Times best-selling author Scott Farris (https://www.c-span.org/person/?scottfarris02) . Freedom on Trial: The First Post Civil-War Battle Over Civil Rights and Voter Suppression (http://www.thelyonspress.com/book/9781493046355) tells the story of the federal government prosecution of the South Carolina Ku Klux Klan in the early 1870s. Farris talks with us about the system of citizenship—and the contested meanings of the 14th and 15th Amendments during the Reconstruction period, the role of radical Republicans in the fight for racial justice, and the specific role of Farris’s own great grandfather in this overlooked historical saga of the KKK. Our colleague John Nichols, (https://www.thenation.com/authors/john-nichols/) National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation, joins us next to discuss his latest book, The Fight for the Soul of the Democratic Party: The Enduring Legacy of Henry Wallace’s Anti-Fascist, Anti-Racist Politics (https://www.versobooks.com/books/3082-the-fight-for-the-soul-of-the-democratic-party) . In the book, John reveals the legacy of former Vice President Henry Wallace, who warned of the persisting “Danger of American Fascism” and urged the Democratic Party to reject imperialism in favor of a genuinely progressive future. It is a message, Nichols says, the Democratic party needs to heed now. Nichols brings the often forgotten visionary, politician, activist and philanthropist Wallace to the fore of mid-century American politics, charting the untraveled paths he envisioned for the Democratic Party, including a post-war peace that was rooted in human dignity and justice abroad and domestically. And John answers the question: does the Democratic Party today have a soul to fight for? Our final selection for this week’s episode offers a very different way of thinking about systems. Although this book is about one man—athlete, artist, philosopher, and activist, Paul Robeson—it isn’t so much a biography as an exploration of Robeson as a system, a technology, an element and vibration. Intrigued? Tune in to hear Shana Redmond (https://drshanaredmond.com/) , Professor of Musicology and African American Studies at UCLA, and author of Everything Man: The Form and Function of Paul Robeson (https://www.dukeupress.edu/everything-man) , as she talks with our hosts about this extraordinary book, including how Robeson was to Henry Wallace in 1948 as Killa Mike was to Bernie Sanders in 2020. A very special thanks to all of our authors that joined us for first System Check Book Club (https://www.thenation.com/article/society/system-check-live-video/) , as well as all of our partners for the live event including: The Anna Julia Cooper Center (https://ajccenter.com/) , Community Change Action (https://communitychangeaction.org/) , The New York Public Library (https://www.nypl.org/) , Tattered Cover Bookstore (https://www.tatteredcover.com/) , and of course the home of System Check The Nation (https://www.thenation.com/) . Michael Nicholas Buissereth is a first-generation Haitian American immigrant born in Brooklyn, New York but loves to say Harlem is what made him. He graduated college from The City College of New York with a degree in economics and theatre in summer 2011. In 2012 he was offered a full scholarship to study at Stella Adler Conservatory of the Arts in Los Angeles. Accepting the two-year scholarship, Michael immersed himself in the arts and worked on phenomenal playwrights under the tutelage of amazing teachers to broaden his acting education. After graduating in 2014 Michael began to seek work experience outside of the classroom. His works in front of the camera include a diverse variety of subjects targeting a range of issues that are socially ignored, such as his work Director. Harry Locke on Citadel '11 dealing with the effects of PTSD, or the African American identity which was lost through slavery colonization in this identity and connection piece Medo wo'12, Directed by Sean Addo co-starred with American Gods "Yetide Badaki" and finally exposing the seemingly tricky lens of consent in a College Campus directed by Tarik "ReekSpeaks" Jackson in Drunk & Hot Girls'13. His work behind the camera started in 2014 when he first decided to create his own reel. He shot, wrote, directed, produced, cast. Michael at this moment learned about his. own power to create and hasn't looked back since. Thus teaming up with Alexis Ostrander and Claudia Marasca to bring Bambina '16 a film that brings to light mental illness in regards to postpartum depression in which Michael tapped into his producing hat. In that same year Michael wore many hats this time as Directed, Produce Wrote. and Acted his first-ever viral short "Campaigns Anonymous". The overwhelming facebook shares and being shouted out by Killa Mike for this comedy, activism piece bring voting to the forefront for millenials. Ask him now about acting Michael will simply respond, The journey is long, the mountain is high but the VIEW will be beautiful. I'm just trying to show my family we can do anything, because " Somewhere we all stopped dreaming and Started listening~1804". @JustMykeN.

"Go easy on us is our first time. Well, my first time." -- Killa Mike. Join us on an adventure through the poop chute of life.
Marvelous Monday with Dr. Shirley McKellar and Bishop L.J. Guillory is always the way to start the week! In 2016 we will make some important decisions about the direction of our country and the lives of American people and families. It is our civic responsibility to stay informed on the issues, pay close attention to the actions and decisions of our elected officials, get to know the people who are running for office and educate ourselves and others about the importance of VOTING! Let's get moving in the right direction for 2016, starting right here on Marvelous Monday! Tonight we will discuss Trump's racist race to the moral bottom keeps him right at the top of the GOP primary polls! We will also discuss the shooting at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs and the toxic rhetoric and attack on womens' healthcare which has been a particular focus of elected republicans for several yrears now. When will our media and level headed republicans finally call this extreme and dangerous behavior out for what it really is? Let's talk about it on Marvelous Monday! Show your support for Dr. Shirley McKellar in her run for US Congress to send Louie Gohmert packing and give REAL representation to the good people of the First District in Texas!
