This episode is one of a three-part series recorded as part of the Rare & Vintage Beer Tasting, an annual event held in Durham, North Carolina that brings brewers and beer lovers together from all over the country. Along with a beer festival, Rare & Vintage also hosts beer industry professional development conversations each January. The combo acts as a fundraising and awareness effort for the Michael James Jackson Foundation, which funds education and career advancement for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the brewing and distilling industries. For this year's event, I moderated three discussions, and in this episode, you'll hear me in conversation with three panelists talking about how language and culture have built the lexicon for beer and what we can do to change and enhance it all. It's a spiritual connection to a James Beard Award-winning story Good Beer Hunting published in 2022, in which Mark Dredge explored how flavor wheels and tasting tools should evolve to speak to a global collection of beer drinkers. To build on the ideas you may have read about in that story and share new ones, joining me were: Breeze Galindo, director of operations for the Michael James Jackson Foundation and founder of MiLuna Brewing. Lindsay Barr, co-founder of DraughtLab Sensory Software. Rafael D'Armas, brewer at Brookyln's Kings County Brewers Collective, also known as KCBC. As you listen to the back-and-forth between these three, you get to hear practical, scientific, and philosophical approaches to how we can all think differently about the way we describe and talk about beer. The importance of this, as you'll hear, is a necessary step to acknowledge how diverse beer is becoming—even if it's been slow—but how much the language we use is going to matter next year and long after that. That's all great in the present, but when looking back over a decade later, those memories tend to fade a little bit because you never created a bond with a friend going through the same experiences that you did. Episode Notes Independent hotel brand Arlo Hotels had emphasized smaller rooms in its properties when it launched as part of its appeal. But the company is moving to larger rooms due to a shift in consumer demand, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.  Real estate development firm Quadrum Global recently announced it's planning to bring Brookyln's The Williamsburg Hotel under its Arlo Hotels brand by September. O'Neill writes rooms at The Williamsburg are considerably larger than the ones at the first Arlo properties. He adds Arlo has been shifting to properties with larger rooms after its first two hotels welcomed more affluent guests than projected. Arlo CEO Oleg Pavlov said the brand had originally focused on attracting millennials.  Next, Montana recently passed a law banning all personal use of TikTok in the state in response to allegations China is using it to spy on Americans. However, while they wait for legal challenges to play out, Montana's tourism boards are still active on the popular social media platform, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  Destination Missoula and Glacier County Tourism are two tourism boards in the state still using TikTok. Glacier Country Tourism Racene Friede said the agency is taking a wait and see approach before making any firm decisions about its TikTok account. Habtemariam writes TikTok has grown in popularity in travel marketing in recent years, with tourism boards increasingly producing content on the platform.  Montana is part of a wave of states that have enacted bans on government agencies using TikTok. But it's the first to outright prohibit all personal use of it within state borders. The state had released a memo last December banning agencies like the Montana Tourism Office from using TikTok.  Finally, a growing number of hotels are hiring cultural managers, employees responsible for helping immerse staff and guests in local history and traditions, reports Contributor Carley Thornell.  Thornell writes the rise in cultural managers is a response to surging consumer interest in cultural tourism. The United Nations World Tourism Organization found cultural tourism is a goal of roughly 40 percent of international tourist trips. Thornell cites Hawaii's Four Seasons Resort Hualalai as one property that's made heavy of cultural managers. The hotel has a different cultural manager for specialities such as hula dancing, music and weaving. Thornell adds many activities are free for guests.

Bill Handel on the suspect involved in the shooting of 10 and injuries of 16 in a Brooklyn subway on Tuesday being arrested. Gasoline remains expensive even though oil prices have dropped. California has unveiled a proposal to ban new gasoline-fueled cars. And the military wants 'robot ships' to replace sailors in battle.

In a rapidly developing situation in New York, it is being reported that a gunman has opened fire in a Brookyln Subway station, shooting what appears to be 5 people. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported, although two of the injuries have been reported to be severe. Other injuries occurred as well, after people began fleeing from the gunfire. It is also being reported that several undetonated explosive devices were also found at the scene. This is a developing story and we will be updating it through out the day.
