Take yourself back to the Celtic Tiger. Business is booming, properties are flying off the market. This is the environment in which Brian and Mary Patricia O'Donnell built up their mammoth property portfolio, at one point valued at over €1bn. Their Dublin home, Gorse Hill on upmarket Vico Road in Killiney, was repossessed by Bank of Ireland following a much-publicised stand-off in 2015. The mansion, which looks out over the Irish Sea, was sold two years later for €9.5m. Now, nearly a decade after the O'Donnells were ordered to leave the property, they are back in the news. With Singapore's 59th birthday right around the corner, we want to bring you a National Day special of “Under the Radar” where we speak to a homegrown heritage brand that you'll come into contact with on a day-to-day basis. Make a guess – this company is also said to be the oldest Hainanese coffee shop brand in Singapore. Established in late 1919 along the busy streets of Killiney Road, our guest for today is none other than – well — F&B operator Killiney! But there's a story behind how Killiney Kopitiam came about. The coffee shop was founded as Kheng Hoe Heng Coffeeshop back in the day, serving well-brewed coffee and tea and charcoal-grilled bread toast. The traditional breakfast fare stole the heart of one regular customer called Mr Woon, who loved it so much that he finally bought the shop in 1993, renovated it, and called it ‘Killiney Kopitiam'. But despite major renovations, the new owner believed in upholding the legacy of the previous owner, as well as the traditional working style and influence of the coffee shop. The focus remains on making good kaya, bread toast, coffee and tea, even as the brand scales and modernises. Today, the Killiney Group has grown to a presence of about 50 outlets worldwide, and even moved into the FMCG merchandise business selling ready-to-cook food paste and instant beverages under the same heritage brand. Now, we're talking to Killiney Kopitiam not only because the old-school coffee shops are not only one close to our hearts, but also because the trade is also fading away from modern Singapore. According to a Business Insider article in January this year citing Singapore's Housing Development Board, only 776 coffee shops remain, down from the over 2,000 traditional coffee shops back in the 1950s. So what was Killiney Kopitiam's recipe to thrive over the years, all while retaining a slice of Singapore's past? Meanwhile, what is the company doing to bring a slice of Singapore abroad to other international markets such as the US? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Henry Oh, General Manager, Killiney International.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There can't be too many people, certainly in Dublin, who haven't heard of Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel in Killiney. And while the building itself has a very long history dating all the way back to 1740, its current incarnation began in 1970 when Paddy and Eithne Fitzpatrick fulfilled a lifetime ambition by buying Killiney Castle and its grounds. They initially opened 1 room at a time, eventually reaching 13 rooms in the original castle, before embarking on a massive expansion plan over the 1975 to 1995 period that saw the property grow by 100 rooms, a fitness centre, and conference and meeting spaces. The group then expanded to open hotels in Bunratty, New York, and Chicago before splitting into separate ownership when Paddy died. The Fitzpatrick Castle hotel has been in the ownership of Paddy and Eithne's daughter since 2005 and has been operating for over 50 years. Sitting in front of me are Mark and Joseph Scott Lennon – the current generation of operators. Mark has over 20 years of hospitality experience and took over running Fitzpatrick's Castle in 2012. He has international experience working in Vancouver and New York and is heavily involved in the Irish Hotel Federation as a current member of the national council. Joseph has 14 years hospitality experience packed with international destinations like St Vincent, the Grenadines, New York, and Dubai. He has been hotel manager at Fitzpatrick Castle for the last two years. This is the 22nd episode with guests Mark and Joseph Scott Lennon, Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, in the Davy podcast series 'Everyday Business with Aidan Donnelly'. This podcast brings you insightful conversation between Aidan Donnelly and entrepreneurs and business owners/management with their own unique story to tell. What is the first thing you would do once you get to the airport? Well, if you're like me, you might make a beeline to some of the fast food outlets or traditional kopi kiosks to grab a quick bite or your daily dose of caffeine. On that note, did you know that the franchise branded stores for Subway and Killiney across all four airport terminals in Singapore, as well as at The Jewel are all managed under one company? With a heritage dating back to 1986 with the opening of the first terminals at the Changi Airport, Palms Food International is one of the earliest established airport F&B operators in Singapore. But why is the company focused solely on the airport? And how has that changed since Palms Food International was acquired by RMA Group in 2012? On Under the Radar, Drive Time's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian spoke with Avon Lau, General Manager, PALMS Food International for more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sorcha has ordered a skip. Yeah, no, that might not be big news where you live – but on Vico Road, Killiney, it's, like, massive? Because it's evidence that you're up to something. And around here, there's very little that escapes the attention of the local residents' association, especially with their hourly drone flyovers looking for evidence of illegal building activity in the area. Sorcha is quiet this morning. I honestly haven't seen her this distracted since she got a girl sacked for plucking her eyebrows in a way that made her face look – her word – quizzical? Paul Kelly and Gordon Rochford AKA Those Conspiracy Guys have gone from Ireland's best kept secret, to Ireland's leading independent podcast. Launched in 2014 and now in Season 4 of their insanely popular podcast, the two lads popped out to Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel in the heart of Killiney to catch up with Danny & Mero. Gordon of course has been a guest previously on WTSpod but with Paul along side him the conspiracies were flying like a UFO outside Area 51. Princess Diana, Big Foot, The Presidential Election, Zika Virus - these are just some of the many topics covered this week and if you want to hear more head over www.thoseconspiracyguys.com or check them out where ever you listen to podcasts.
Petesy Carroll is Ireland and Europe's leading MMA journalist. His work features in multiple media outlets including The Daily Mirror, Newstalk Radio, Severe MMA, Talking Brawls Podcast and many others. He has been featured on Ariel Helwani's "The MMA Hour" and is popularly regarded as the best thing to come out of Blanchardstown since the Yankee Candle Store hit the Blanch shopping centre. After a bit of a visa problem stopped Petesy crossing the Liffey before, the lads finally got everything sorted and managed to smuggle him across the border of the Southside and into the beautiful surroundings of Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel in the glorious seaside resort of Killiney. This week's topics include Petesy's start in journalism and some late night calls from The Notorious one himself, Conor McGregor. We look at McGregor V Diaz 2 and hear about friend of the show, Tony McGregor having a magical experience with David Copperfield. We talk about MMA in Ireland and the recent situation regarding regulation of MMA, the lads try to out do each other's segways and there's nearly a falling out over chicken wings.

This week Danny & Mero are joined by yet another Borough legend. John Ross Crangle. JR, as we know him, is a world cup winning Pitch and Putt player and has won four Leinster Championships. What makes these accomplishments on the course even more impressive is JR was able to achieve this while battling his demons off the course. In an emotional chat with the lads Jr describes what life is like with a gambling addiction and how it brought him to some dark times. From having to get loans for special occasions after losing his savings to the isolation and frustration of standing on Killiney beach in the rain and contemplating suicide. Just this week Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar announced cuts to the Mental Health Service budget and yet JR is the perfect example of how important that funding is. It's now over a year since he entered Pieta House and now JR is an advocate for keeping a healthy mind and speaks bravely battling an addiction that has ruined so many peoples lives. You can check out JR's blog at jrcrangle.wordpress.com
This week on WTSpod Danny sat down with one of Ireland's greatest minds. David McWilliams is an author, broadcaster and economist to name but a few of the strings on his bow and we had the pleasure of welcoming him to Fitzpatrick's Castle in Killiney to discuss his story. David describes a recent trip to the Caribbean as well as telling us what it was like to have then Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, call to his house at the height of the now infamous banking crisis. It wasn't all doom and gloom however, there was plenty on the table as we talked about festivals, growing up in the borough, a positive idea for solving the housing crisis and the potential for a follow up podcast in the not too distant future... On top of all that we hear about Mero being on death's door, Blackfish wins, and with thanks to our friends over at PodSkwod we give our top 5 fictional characters who would make a better President than Donald Trump.
