Last week we discussed the six-month hiatus between noticing troubles with stone fruit and the time of activating prevention. Peach leaf curl is a rather ugly fungal disease that commences 6 months from now – in spring the leaf curl starts to become obvious on the newly emerged leaves of your peach trees. Taphrina deformans is the name of the disease that targets peaches and nectarines. The infection begins in autumn when the leaves are falling to the ground – a double dose of copper (a few times, 3 or 4 weeks apart) will stop the fungi from settling on the dormant fruit trees. Follow up questions I got: Does the copper spray debilitate the peach and nectarine's buds? No worries! The buds are going to a dormant phase Another great example of important timing is winning battles from the Lemon Tree Borer. These borers are mainly found from Nelson-Blenheim north – they don't like it too cold. This rather cool, sizeable, long-horn beetle is a native of our country. It was well-established here thousands of years before Charlotte Kemp introduced oranges into Kerikeri in 1819. Originally lemon tree borers would tunnel into native trees – a wide range of species became host plants (Mahoe, Kowhai, Coprosma, Manuka, etc). Exotic trees are also targeted by lemon tree borer. I remember them getting into our olive trees and Wisteria in Auckland – Tamarillo, Elm, Chestnut, Gorse, Apple are just a few of the exotic hosts. The most important species targeted by this borer are the citrus varieties that are grown commercially and in the backyard, but apple, persimmon, almond, cherry, walnut, and grapes are just as much in danger of damage – these beetles are economic pests! A damaged branch or trunk is the ultimate spot to lay eggs in. Small nooks and crannies are where the female lemon tree borer would leave her eggs – especially in branches where the bark had been removed or in the pruning cuts. The small larvae emerge from these eggs and start chewing their way deeper and deeper into the wood. A year or two later these larvae will have grown to a serious size before changing into a pupa, ready to turn into an adult beetle. This is the importance of timing: adult beetles emerge in spring and are active till late summer. Avoid pruning from winter till early autumn. Clare County Fire Service is appealing to landowners to be on the lookout for illegal activity or any behaviour that could lead to the spread of fire on land. It comes as local authority crews from Kilrush and Kilkee have been dealing with a number of blazes in the Moanmore/Shragh areas of West Clare in recent days. A Status Orange High Forrest Fire Risk Warning remains in place across the country until noon on Friday, which means there's a high risk of fires spreading in areas where there's hazardous fuels such as dead grasses, or shrubs like heather and gorse. Clare's Chief County Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly has been telling Clare FM's Fiona Cahill that household rubbish scattered in the Moanmore/Shragh areas, which appears to have been dumped there, may have contributed to the spread of fire.

Today we talk with Sam K. Horton about his debut novel Gorse. we also talk about ancient sites, standing stones, the Cornish landspape, about folklore and myth and about the process of writing and creating new worlds. An author of literary fantasy, Sam lives above the moor in North Cornwall, and draws on its wild landscape, wide skies, and windblown folklore for his work. Growing up on a sheep farm near Hereford, he left for London and trained as a costume designer working in film, theatre and opera before moving into visual art, still working with narratives, texts and stories. It was during his last project, surrounding the discovery and development of Eythin (an island lost off the coast of Cornwall, halfway between Boscastle and the Celtic Deep) that he found his talent for writing rich, detailed mythic worlds. This came as a surprise—despite a lifelong love of reading anything within reach, and over a decade working in libraries—but a welcome one.
Take yourself back to the Celtic Tiger. Business is booming, properties are flying off the market. This is the environment in which Brian and Mary Patricia O'Donnell built up their mammoth property portfolio, at one point valued at over €1bn. Their Dublin home, Gorse Hill on upmarket Vico Road in Killiney, was repossessed by Bank of Ireland following a much-publicised stand-off in 2015. The mansion, which looks out over the Irish Sea, was sold two years later for €9.5m. Now, nearly a decade after the O'Donnells were ordered to leave the property, they are back in the news. Passing through Ballycastle, a charming seaside town on the Causeway Coast in Ireland's northeast corner, one wouldn't necessarily expect to find a world-class bakery serving sourdough breads and creative, beautiful pastries. But after spending time learning and traveling abroad, this is exactly what Ciara O'hArtlaighle and her husband, Dara, created when they opened Ursa Minor. Not only does Ursa Minor have fantastic breads and pastries, but it's also a cafe, serving a really important role as a gathering space around food in a small town without many options. Inspired by sourdough and their travels around the world—New Zealand in particular—they returned home, started baking, and haven't stopped since. We spoke to Ciara about bringing sourdough to Ballycastle; the importance of community cafés; the difference between the food culture in the north versus the south; sourcing Irish flour and grains; and what it's like to be a mother and small business owner.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. A West Coast volunteer project to rid a lagoon of an invasive weed, is bringing people and businesses together across New Zealand. Okarito Lagoon is swamped by gorse. It's threatening biodiversity; choking native wetland plants, bird habitat and inhibiting whitebait breeding grounds. But once a year scores of sleeves are being rolled up to pull the gorse out. Over a hundred volunteers descended on Okarito recently, a settlement of some forty people, and plans are in place for Gorsebusting to happen again next year. Kathryn is joined by Gorsebusters organiser Baz Hughes, who runs Okarito Kayaks with his wife, Gemma.
