Our work IN today is about how we can magnify mind body unity pathways for ourselves and our students in order to boost fitness results without adding extra high intensity, impact and calorie deprivation. For new fit pros fresh off certification it can be very scary building a student base from scratch. Most certs don't teach you how to do that. So a lot of us end up working for someone else and getting churned and burned out of the industry because it's almost impossible to make a living wage from only instructor hourly pay from big box gyms. Not to say it can't be done. But let's just say that's why for so many fit pros the fitness gig is the ultimate side gig and never really rises to the level of a career. But what if you want more than a side gig? What if you need more? What if you're ready to elevate your professional credibility to a long and fulfilling career? That's our Work IN today. Group exercise prescription has become the faceless assembly line of the fitness industry. Branded plug and play format companies have taken the place of creative freestyle instructors in pursuit of a baseline of quality control. Instructors don't even get to choose their music. So instead of connection, customization and results, students get performance choreography and instructors risk overuse injuries and a dumbing down of their talent to fit the masses. This attitude in the fitness industry that the person at the front of the room doesn't matter, it's the workout that matters and anyone can deliver it, is one of the things that drives instructors out of wellness. I want to change that. It's time to elevate the fitness professional with gold standard skills. Our Work IN today is about how to teach to the room and make every student feel like the ONLY student in any format. Let's go over the unique symbols, associated elements, and the energies represented in each. Visualize or draw your own yantra as you listen to:
Knowing the value of what you offer and how to price it in the fitness industry is probably the most challenging thing to figure out as a fitness professional. And that's today's Work IN. 5 tips to master the art of saying NOMany women have been conditioned from an early age to override that inner voice that says “no”. That gut feeling that this is wrong, we don't want this. Our intuition. That conditioning infuses us with the culturally acceptable boundaries for who we are as women in our families, in business and in the world. We are all complicit in our own limitations. At some point we had to agree with it. But that conditioning chafes when you wake up to your dark side and realize what you have is not what you want and you can do something about it. That's our work IN today. In honor of Heart Chakra Day(a.k.a. Valentine's Day), I want to talk about gratitude. No matter where you're at in your wellness journey I'm sure you've heard all about the benefits of a gratitude practice. But where did gratitude practices originate? Let's look at how gratitude has shown up in texts like The Vedas and The Bhagavad Gita AND how you can approach your gratitude practice from a somatic lens. I'm going to answer questions like:
We're shifting gears a bit over the next few weeks as we take a look at some essentials for fit pro success. Now I know not all of us are fitness professionals. A good night's sleep is the holy grail for many of us, especially women because it's so responsive to our hormone fluctuations. In our modern society in general, men and women, on average, are lucky to get 6 hours of sleep a night, despite recommendations of 7-9. 73% of Americans get less than 7 hours of sleep a night according to a 2023 Gallup poll. They say we sleep ⅓ of our life. Sleep is the key to stress management and the first thing we lose when we're under stress. But did you know it's also integral to a healthy metabolism and hormone balance throughout our lifetime? If you've ever felt the frustration of mystery “overnight” weight gain or doing everything right and not getting the results you're after. Or struggled to find a good night sleep in spite of exhaustion. This is the episode for you. So often at the beginning of the year we feel a push change. A push towards healthy eating choices and a pull towards familiar habit patterns. When both happen at the same time we get stuck in the middle. The body is a complicated system of networks and they all communicate and work with each other, pushing and pulling to some kind of balance. Understanding the push and pull can set us up for success or struggle and that's our Work IN today. I want to give you seven practical strategies to find a practice that you can rely on. Let's talk about the importance of not just lowering, but evolving expectations, embracing consistency over perfection, and finding personal anchor practices. Listen and find out why you should…
Motivation is an unsustainable myth. At least in the sense that most of us understand it. The idea that we need to feel some kind of way in order to take action toward our goals is BS. We shouldn't be reliant on a fleeting sensation for anything, especially not our health and fitness. It's time to be the grown-up in this mind-body relationship. That's our work IN this week. We're looking at why we do what we do and how understanding the myth of motivation can help us take radical responsibility for our actions and enjoy the long term consequences of our health choices. As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. Hey there, welcome back. Today marks the episode 199 of The Work IN podcast and as we are set to enter 2025, and celebrate our 5th season. I can't even believe that. I didn't even think I wanted to do a podcast! But here I am looking ahead and wondering what's next? As we approach the new year, many of us are setting goals for next year. Or trying to. I don't do resolutions any more and my goals setting would appall business coaches everywhere. I've given up resolutions in favor of a more organic goal setting and a manifestation practice for both my business and my life. Our Work IN today is a look at the art and science of manifestation and why goal setting is such a struggle and resolutions fail.As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. We've discussed Annamaya, our physical body layer, pranamaya kosha our energetic/breath layer, manomaya kosha our mental layer and last week we discussed Vijnanamaya kosha. Our wisdom layer. That objective witness to everything in and around us. Today we wrap up this series with the 5th and innermost kosha, Anandamaya kosha. This layer is described as a steady state of bliss and in many traditions our true self. Without breath, we cease to exist and yet we spend very little of our time or attention understanding its healing power. Unless we're in a yoga class. That's our Work IN today, exploring pranamaya kosha, our energetic self, through the breath as a communication pathway between the body and the mind for stress and trauma healing. And practical ways to incorporate this understanding of our energetic self and our breath both on and off the mat.Welcome back to our series on the koshas. Today we're talking about the 2nd kosha. Prana = Breath, vitality, energy, life. Maya (as we learned last week) = illusion Pranamaya kosha is all these and more. This layer of our self lies beneath our physical body and permeates all other layers. Annamaya Kosha Your physical selfWelcome to our series on the koshas. The Koshas are the 5 layers of self, set one within the other from the physical body to the Bliss body. Today is all about Annamaya Kosha. Anna meaning food and maya meaning illusion. This is our physical body. The self that is made up of food. Most of us listening today identify ourselves by their physical body. I would guess that a majority of the people on this planet identify themselves first and foremost as their physical form and what it can do. That's our work IN today. We're going to talk about our perception of our physical form, the annamaya kosha and how that perception can create calm or chaos in our stress response and overall health. As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. Stress and trauma is overwhelming because it permeates every layer of our being. Having a deeper understanding of what those layers are can help us start the healing process toward post traumatic growth. Today our work IN is an introduction to a series of episodes on the koshas that can guide us along that path to resilience. In yoga we talk a lot about the chakras, the breath, the yamas and niyamas, and of course asana (poses), we might read the yoga sutras or the bhagavad gita and all of those things, all of those practices, feel good, they're soothing to the soul and they calm the nervous system. But why do they work so well? The koshas are the glue that holds us together and understanding them can unlock true healing and post traumatic growth. So what are the koshas? As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. Do you ever catch yourself saying, “there's just not enough time in the day” or “I can't afford that right now”. These could be signs that you're living in a scarcity mindset. This is super common, especially amongst yoga practitioners, and can manifest itself in different ways. But you can break these negative belief patterns and foster a mindset of prosperity and trust in the universe. So refill your tea and let's talk about:
Welcome back this is part 2 of our hysterical history. Today we shift into examples of medical misogyny in modern medicine. Our work IN today is a mix of healthcare history and a rebellious call to action for women everywhere to stand up, challenge the establishment and raise the standards of care for themselves and our daughters. I hate to believe that any of these things are done with purposeful ill intent. But when these kinds of biases are brought to light and intentionally dismissed or ignored that's when I have a real problem. As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. There is to this day a pattern of dismissal that is compounded by a lack of value placed on the female patient's lived experience and a distinct bias and inequality when it comes to research and precision guidelines for women. One of the most powerful tools we have to build resilience and overcome chronic stress and trauma is connection. It's the first thing that is sacrificed in the face of stress injury and yet it is the number one thing we need if we're going to heal.In health and wellness, connection has become an overused meaningless word. Just like the words wellness and health. Our work IN today is a deep dive into some of the less obvious meanings of connection and how we can use it beyond the obvious to get and stay healthier physically, mentally and emotionally. On the surface if I say connection is important for health and wellbeing, what does that mean to you?For me, I immediately picture human connection. Going out with friends, having some meaningful relationships with people. Of course those are connections. But there are so many more connections that we can make that can take our physical, mental and emotional health to the next level.Today I want to look at some of the more subtle connections that can give us exponential health improvements. As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. Have you ever fallen into this trap? I know you've heard me talk about how as healers we have a hard time charging for our services, but there is another trap we easily fall into similar to this: OVERGIVING. Meaning, you are offering way more than you're potentially charging for. This often comes from a place of insecurity, which is why showing up as your authentic self is so important. Let's explore:
Ep 189 Hard things: Good hard sleepSleep is a hard thing. Good sleep is even harder. The complexity of our network of systems makes it even harder to isolate the keys to getting a great night's sleep when literally anything and everything can disturb our sleep. While occasional sleep disturbances can be normal for sure, long term sleep disruption is not. Our work IN this week is changing the way we look at the complex puzzle of sleep from a nice to have to a non negotiable priority in our health. Eating “right” is a hard thing but not because it's actually hard to do. Experts keep changing their minds, making unsupported nutrition recommendations that are riddled with conflicts of interest and have resulted in the exact opposite of health in the real world. That's confusing and annoying and challenging but that's not really what makes it hard either. Eating right is hard because we have outsourced our common sense when it comes to basic biology of nourishment for the bodies we live in. That's our work IN today. We're looking at 5 simple ways to reclaim the uncommon sense around nutrition in order to nourish the body, mind and nervous system. As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. They say yoga poses don't begin until you want to quit. That is true for everything in health and wellness. If we want to be strong, healthy and well beyond the false sense of security that comes with mainstream medical health markers we need to do hard things. We need to ask our body for more and stop quitting on ourselves before we get there. face. It: Era lì contro la sua volontà, spinto dai suoi amici e dai dottori a prendersi una pausa.En: He was there against his will, urged by his friends and doctors to take a break. It: Aveva riempito la sua valigia di libri, gadget e tutto ciò che pensava lo avrebbe aiutato a rilassarsi.En: He packed his suitcase with books, gadgets, and everything he thought would help him relax. It: Tuttavia, quando giunse all'aeroporto, scoprì che il suo bagaglio era stato smarrito.En: However, when he arrived at the airport, he discovered his luggage had been lost. It: Senza scelta, si trovò costretto a bit distracted. It: Va dimenticato i suoi effetti personali ovunque e non era raro vederlo alla ricerca dei suoi occhiali sopra la testa o delle chiavi infilate in tasca.En: He often forgot his Lorenzo," Marco would say.It: "Troveremo il modo di goderti questo ritiro."En: "We'll find a way for you to enjoy this retreat."It: Lorenzo, inizialmente riluttante, seguì gli altri nelle attività proposte.En: Initially reluctant, Lorenzo followed the others in the proposed activities. It: Iniziavano sempre con una meditazione nell'oliveto.En: They always started with a meditation in the olive grove. It: All'inizio Lorenzo sedeva leggermente distante dagli altri, incapace di concentrarsi, la mente che viaggiava altrove.En: At first, Lorenzo sat slightly apart from the others, unable to concentrate, his mind wandering elsewhere. It: Una mattina, mentre il sole sorgeva tra i rami degli olivi, Marco, con la sua solita energica goffaggine, inciampò e cadde a terra facendo ridere anche i partecipanti più seri.En: One morning, as the sun rose among the olive branches, Marco, with his usual energetic clumsiness, tripped and fell to the ground, making even the most serious participants laugh. It: Fu in quel momento che Lorenzo, nonostante tutto, sentì una strana calma pervaderlo.En: It was at that moment that Lorenzo, despite everything, felt a strange calm come over him.It: Mentre ascoltava gli uccellini cantare e il vento che soffiava piano, comprese che la tranquillità non era qualcosa che potesse comprare o racchiudere in una valigia.En: As he listened to the birds chirping and the soft blowing of the wind, he realized that tranquility wasn't something he could buy or pack in a suitcase. It: Con il tempo, Lorenzo cominciò ad apprezzare quei momenti semplici di connessione.En: Over time, Lorenzo began to appreciate those simple moments of connection. It: Mentre il ritiro procedeva, lasciava andare le sue resistenze, partecipando attivamente a tutte le attività.En: As the retreat continued, he let go of his resistance, actively participating in all the activities. It: Spesso discuteva con Giulia, non solo delle tecniche di yoga, ma anche dei modi per vivere una vita più serena.En: He often discussed with Giulia, not only about yoga techniques but also ways to live a more serene life. It: Quando il ritiro giunse al termine, Lorenzo era cambiato.En: When the retreat ended, Lorenzo had changed. It: Ormai era un nuovo Lorenzo, più rilassato e aperto.En: He was now a new Lorenzo, more relaxed and open. It: Salutò Assisi con un calore che non aveva mai immaginato di provare.En: He bid farewell to Assisi with a warmth he had never imagined feeling. It: Aveva trovato, tra gli olivi e le risate di Marco, un brandello di pace interiore.En: Among the olive trees and Marco's laughter, he had found a piece of inner peace. It: Giulia lo abbracciò alla partenza, con un sorriso complice e affettuoso.En: Giulia hugged him as he departed, with a knowing and affectionate smile. It: "Questo è solo l'inizio.En: "This is just the beginning. It: Ricorda, la pace è dentro di te."En: Remember, peace is within you."It: Ora, pur senza il suo bagaglio, Lorenzo riusciva a portare con sé qualcosa di molto più prezioso di qualsiasi oggetto: il desiderio e la capacità di vivere con semplicità e armonia.En: Now, even without his luggage, Lorenzo managed to carry with him something far more valuable than any object: the desire and ability to live with simplicity and harmony. Let's face it, the fitness and wellness industry attracts all kinds of people and there are all kinds of ways to succeed in it. The assumption is that people who work in wellness, from instructors and trainers to studio and gym owners, are well. That these folks have already done their work and they are grounded, compassionate entrepreneurs who have their ego in check and the best interest of their students and employees at heart. Sadly that isn't always the case. In fact I would suggest that many of us are in the wellness and fitness community because while that's who we are striving to be, we aren't there yet and we know it. Without strong and grounded mentors and collaborators who are willing to tell the truth about this industry we can spend a lot of time floundering around trying to be something and someone we are not. To fit the woo woo wellness cookie cutter insisting we want to help others yet refusing to help ourselves first. The truth is we can't help anyone if we aren't in business, we can't stay in business if we don't get paid, and we can't get paid if we don't give people results beyond the woo woo wackadoodle world of wellness. Our work IN today is a look at how we as fit pros can find a balanced approach to the business of the body by grounding our business in the body.As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. Grief and stress are part of the human condition. We don't need to live very long before we experience either one. What's interesting is the recovery process for each can be remarkably similar. Chronic long term stress can feel remarkably like grief. Our Work IN today is a look at how we can use the 5 stages of grief as a framework to better understand and conquer chronic stress for long term resilience. Sex dreams don't mean what you think, nightmares are good for you, and the divine is fueling your transformation as you sleep. Welcome to my conversation with dream analyst and eastern/western archetypes expert, Kari Hohne. According to Kari, when we sleep, our highest self is communicating with us. Everything we see in dreams can fuel our personal evolution. Kari even interprets one of my dreams on the show – and the results are SO spot on. It's scary! Listen and learn:
As relaxing as your practice can be, it's also about building that strength and that willpower to keep coming back. But what gives you the motivation to be consistent? In this episode you'll discover:
Today, I interview one of my biggest mentors, Elena Brower. I ask her about the tension many of us feel as yoga teachers: How do we honor our own personal practice (which may be morphing away from the style of yoga we're known for), while still meeting our students' where they are? How do we not feel pigeon-holed by a certain technique or style? And trust our own voice? Listen in as we discuss:
This is an episode I recorded for moms, but in reality it applies to anyone experiencing some form of burnout. We are all insanely busy, it's just the nature of our modern world. That can make it feel impossible to do your yoga ritual or fit self care into your day. Today I want to show you exactly how you can sprinkle some yoga “glitter” on those everyday moments. Yes, even the moments when you want to scream and throw things at the wall! You'll find out:
