Birth Politics of the Third Reich.
Ep.227 Zohra Opoku examines the politics of personal identity formation through historical, cultural, and socio-economic influences, particularly in the context of contemporary Ghana. Opoku's explorations have primarily been expressed through her photography, which she translates into screen printing. This process has led to a collage art practice that combines hand-stitched embroidery on various pre-dyed natural fabrics. She also incorporates references from West African brass-making traditions into her work, which can be experienced as applications on the textile pieces or as sculptures themselves. While her work relays social commentary and broadly relevant themes around the human experience, each of Zohra's explorations is intimately rooted in personal identity politics. She repeatedly integrates family heirlooms and her own self-image into her visual observations of Ghana's cultural memory. In 2023, she is among the artists exhibited in the 15th edition of Sharjah Biennale ‘Thinking Historically in the Present' (United Arab Emirates), as Black Rock Sénégal Alumni at 14th edition of DAK'ART ‘Forger/Out Of Fire' in 2022 and at 7th Athens Biennale ‘Eclipse'(Greece) 2021. She has exhibited internationally such as the Brooklyn Museum (NYC), The Museum for Photography (Chicago), The Cleveland Museum of Art, High Museum of Art (Atlanta), Kunsthaus Hamburg, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Musée de l'Ethnographie (Bordeaux), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao), Kunsthal Rotterdam, Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, Southbank Centre / Hayward Gallery (London), TATE London, SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin), Palais Populaire (Berlin), National Museum Nairobi, CCA Lagos, Nubuke Foundation (Accra) and RAW Material Company (Dakar). Her work is collected by renowned institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; CCS Bard College Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; The Royal Museum of Ontario Toronto, Ontario; The Faurschou Foundation, Copenhagen, Denmark; TATE Modern, London, United Kingdom; The Onassis Collection, Athens, Greece and The Centre Pompidou, Paris, France.

We meet artist Doron Langberg at his new exhibition in London at Victoria Miro Gallery. Night is a hymn to nocturnal worlds both interior and exterior, and the spaces of ambiguity, opportunity and liberation – physical and psychological – that open up after dark. We also meet Doron's gallerists Victoria Miro and Glenn Scott Wright.Doron Langberg's intimate yet expansive take on relationships, sexuality, nature, family and the self proposes how painting can both portray and create queer subjectivity, forging a relationship between interior and exterior realities and the ways in which they shape and are shaped by one another. Titled after queer New York parties and club nights such as Merge and Wrecked, the spaces in these new paintings are worlds in themselves, sites of multiple layers and levels of experience and connection. Together, the works create a narrative arc that follows the course of an evening, a night out becoming the morning after as we move from Basement to Sunrise. The exhibition is accompanied by a new essay by New York-based writer and therapist Hannah Baer. Prominent among a new generation of figurative painters, Doron Langberg creates luminous works that celebrate the physicality of touch – in subject matter and process. Depicting a range of subjects, from queer love to wildflowers and sweeping landscapes, the broad scope of themes and experiences in Langberg's work are underscored by his deeply felt use of paint. Aspects of nature are an enduring source of inspiration, resonating feelings of connection through flowers depicted in close up or as part of enveloping vistas. The works on view in Venice were painted en plein air at different times of the year and include cultivated garden plants as well ostensibly wild or self-seeded varieties – such as ragwort, thistle and dandelion. Langberg paints these fleeting moments spontaneously in one session, alighting on patches of ground and recording them in bursts of activity. Flowers and foliage spring from the whiteness of the canvas in flurries of brushstrokes, preserved by the artist as if moments of revelation. For the artist, painting nature as an ‘embodied experience' is key. Capturing both external realities and internal states of mind, he makes a connection with artists across history – for example, the landscapes of Munch or Van Gogh. The work points to the broader significance of landscapes exterior and interior, and how they relate to or signify our own emotional states.Doron Langberg: Night, featuring large-scale tableaux of nightclub and nocturnal beach scenes, is on view at Victoria Miro, London, is now open and runs until 28 March 2024. Ben Luke talks to Nick Cave about his influences—including those from the worlds of literature, music, film and, of course, art—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Cave, born in Fulton, Missouri, US, in 1959, creates elaborate sculptures and found-object installations. He's best known for his Soundsuits, which blend sculpture, performance, fashion and social activism. His work veers from the intimate and homespun object to vast installations and performances involving multiple participants. Among much else, he discusses his early encounters with the work of Anselm Kiefer and Barkley Hendricks; his passion for the couture of Elsa Schiaparelli; the enduring influence of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic; and a seminal sequence in the film The Wiz. Plus, he answers all our usual questions, including the ultimate one: what is art for?Nick Cave: Forothermore, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, until 10 April 2023. In the Black Fantastic, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Netherlands, until 9 April 2023. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Harmen Meinsma is fotograaf.
Welcome to this eleventh episode of the new Dior Talks series ‘The Female Gaze’. With the term developed in response to the writings of feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey, this podcast series will explore how the work of the female photographers and creatives collaborating with Dior offers a radically new and progressive image of women. In this episode, series host Charlotte Jansen, a British journalist and author, speaks with one of the legendary figures of photography in the last half century. Bettina Rheims has been prominent and highly prolific in the world of portraiture, and also fashion photography, for four decades, having first picked up a camera in 1978. She started by photographing a group of female striptease artists and became fascinated by capturing the femininity, power and corporeality of womanhood. This is a fascination which she has maintained ever since in a long and varied career. Bettina Rheims was born in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1952, into a family deeply involved with the worlds of art, literature and the media. Her passion for photography evolved in the late 1970s, after she had already had careers as a model, journalist and gallerist. She had published almost twenty books of her images from the 1980s to the 2010s. She has photographed Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling, Madonna, Marianne Faithful and Claudia Schiffer amongst many, many others. She has also undertaken advertising campaigns for numerous fashion labels and worked with countless international magazines. She has always combined her skill in capturing the unique qualities of her famous female subjects with an interest in the bizarre, shocking and subcultural. She has had solo exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, the Kunsthal Rotterdam and the Musée d’Art Contemporain, Lyon. In 2016, as part of the #TheWomenBehindTheLens project initiated by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Rheims photographed Laetitia Casta for Dior Magazine as the embodiment of a modern, liberated woman. In this week’s episode, Jansen speaks with Rheims about her radical ideas of beauty and femininity, and how these have evolved over the years. Having taken portraits of prisoners, porn actors, political figures and countless women both cisgender and trans, Rheims has constantly expanded and developed notions of womanhood and womanly strength. When asked why she photographs women, Rheims answers with characteristic honesty, “This is the question I have been asked the most. I haven’t yet found an answer.” This episode represents a treasured opportunity to hear her deepest thoughts on this and other prescient subjects.
