Join us for an exploration of art and materials in this interview Nathan Terborg, recorded at his solo exhibition at Galerie Benjamin Eck in Munich. Nathan skillfully transforms found objects into thought-provoking art pieces. Discover how his early experiences in his grandfather's woodshop influenced his artistic journey, leading him away from traditional painting towards an immersive sculptural practice. Nathan dives into the essence of experimentation, stressing how the relationship between artist and materials is foundational to creating meaningful work. Nathan's approach of curiosity and discovery emphasizes that artistic freedom resides in the acceptance of imperfection and the willingness to explore beyond the surface. The conversation also highlights the importance of communication through art, with Nathan referencing the impactful words of Louise Bourgeois. This insight showcases the intrinsic value of art as an unspoken language that connects both the creator and observer. By drawing from personal anecdotes and professional insights, Nathan inspires listeners to reconsider their interactions with materials and art forms. As he encourages audiences to engage with sculptures tactually, he elucidates the transformative potential hidden within the discarded. Dive into this rich dialogue on creativity and allow yourself to be inspired by the alchemy of art! Make sure to subscribe, share, and leave your thoughts in the comments! Next month, the German artist Anselm Kiefer will be 80, and the first of a number of shows internationally to mark this landmark moment opened this week at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK. It focuses on his early works, and Ben Luke visits Oxford to discuss this pivotal moment in his career with Lena Fritsch, the curator of the exhibition. The latest edition of the biennial in the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah opened earlier this month. The Art Newspaper's correspondent Dale Berning Sawa visited during opening week and spoke to Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, the president and director of Sharjah Art Foundation, which runs the biennial, about this year's edition, her journey in art, and her role in establishing the biennial as a leading art world event. And this episode's Work of the Week is Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto (1901) by Pablo Picasso, a painting from the artist's Blue Period. Conservators at The Courtauld Institute in London have discovered an image of a mystery woman hidden beneath this portrait of De Soto, Picasso's friend and fellow artist. We talk to Barnaby Wright, deputy head of The Courtauld Gallery, about the painting and the image beneath it. The work features in a new exhibition at the gallery, Goya to Impressionism.

Welcome to the Psychedelic Conversations Podcast! Episode 112: In this episode, we delve into the world of Visionary Art with the renowned painter and sculptress, Martina Hoffmann. We discuss Martina's unique journey from her childhood in Cameroon and Germany to her pivotal encounters with psychedelic substances and visionary experiences that deeply influence her art. Martina shares insights into her artistic process, highlighting her work's focus on feminine divine, spirituality, and the intimate connection between expanded states of consciousness and creativity. She also reflects on her collaborations with visionary artists and mentors, including Robert Venosa and Stanislav Grof. This conversation offers a profound look into the life and work of a central figure in Contemporary Visionary Art, exploring the intersections of art, spirituality, and psychedelics. About Martina: German-born, Martina Hoffmann partially grew up in Cameroon, West Africa. She studied art education with Professor Kiefer (father of Anselm Kiefer) and sculpting with Professor Spelmann at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. During this time she also met the Fantastic Realist, Robert Venosa, and greatly inspired by his work, began her work as a painter. During their 30 year relationship they closely worked together, taught workshops worldwide and shared studios, both in the US as well as in Europe. Today Martina Hoffmann works as a painter and sculptress and remains a central figure in contemporary Visionary Art. Her paintings offer the viewer a detailed glimpse into her inner landscapes - imagery that has been inspired by expanded states of consciousness. Her Visionary Realism is decidedly feminine and places the ‘Universal Woman' in an intimate cosmos. The artist has spoken on behalf of art and culture at events and conferences such as 'Estados Modificados De Consciencia', Universiity of Cuernavaca Mexico, 'Chimeria', France, and the 'The Promethean Impulse' at the HR Giger Museum in Switzerland, et. al.. He's worked with the greatest names in music and the arts – now legendary photographer Anton Corbijn turns the Lamborghini Revuelto into a rock star. His portfolio boasts iconic images of David Bowie, Miles Davis, Joy Division, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Anselm Kiefer… and the list goes on. Beyond portraiture, he's played a pivotal role in shaping the visual and creative identity of Depeche Mode and U2. During a shoot spread over two days in the Dolomite mountains, Corbijn channelled 50 years of experience and vision into a subject he's less well-known for: an automobile.
This is an odd duck of an episode. I intended it to be a review of H of H Playbook by Anne Carson. It turned into a bit of a ramble about Anselm Kiefer, Heracles, the Vulnerability Journal Project, and a walk between darkness and light. I'd love to hear what you think. You can email me at vulnerabilitylifeart@gmail.com Anne Carson is a Canadian classicist, poet, translator, and professor. She has written a wide range of books, including Eros the Bittersweet and Men in the Off Hour. Anselm Kiefer is a German painter and sculptor who has been creating monumental work throughout his career to ensure our collective history is not forgotten.
Original Air Date: Monday 8 January, 9 pm Eastern Description: Last week, Dean and Phil said hello to 2024 and said goodbye to "Season 3" by welcoming a special guest and discussing their creative intentions for the year. This weekend, Dean and Phil got together in the nation's capital to get "Season 4" underway by swapping stories about art galleries, historic battlefields, historic D.C. clubs, the James Webb Space Telescope, New Jersey restaurants, Wim Wenders and his 3D documentary about the artist Anselm Kiefer, and a whole lot more. A whole lot of laughs ensue!
This week we're excited to present a conversation with Anselm director Wim Wenders moderated by filmmaker Michèle Stephenson. Anselm is now playing at Film at Lincoln Center, in stunning 3D! Get tickets at filmlinc.org/anselm Oscar-nominated director Wim Wenders traces the life of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most innovative and influential fine artists working today. For more than five decades, Kiefer's paintings and sculptures have confronted his native Germany's dark past through a vast network of cultural references in a dazzling mixture of 35mm and 16mm film stocks, with a distinctive focus on physical elements: from lead, glass, and textiles to found and incinerated organic matter. As he did for his sublime portrait of Pina Bausch in 2011, Wenders employs groundbreaking stereoscopic cinematography to transport us to key chapters of Kiefer's early life in post-Nazi Germany and throughout his 100-acre studio in France. Anselm, which debuted at this year's Cannes Film Festival, is a portrait of an artist at work like you've never seen before—an indelible visual experience and a vivid tour of Kiefer's imposing yet intricately textured works. A Sideshow/Janus Films release.
Both were born in 1945 in Germany during the last year of WWII. Both became giants of the modern German art movement: Anselm Kiefer as a painter and sculptor; Wim Wenders as a filmmaker whose landmark films include “Wings of Desire”, “Paris, Texas” and “The American Friend”. The two had met in 1991 and discussed the possibility of doing a film together, but it wasn't until the two collaborated on Wenders' new 3-D documentary “Anselm” that the stars were finally aligned. Joining Ken on the pod, Wenders paints a picture of this monumental artist whose vast studio spaces are as much works of art as the paintings and sculptures that are housed there. For Wenders, what makes working in 3-D such a crucial element in immersing the audience in these dynamic environments? How has Wenders incorporated elements of fiction into his documentaries and vice versa? And why is it so important to him to create a portrait of the art rather than of the artist? It may have taken over 75 years for these two legendary artists to work together, but the payoff was well worth waiting for. Hidden Gem: “Reality Winner” “Anselm” is released by Sideshow and Janus Films and opens in LA in 3-D at the Laemmle Glendale on December 15. “I think history and tradition are super important, and this is the point because each generation is sort of translating to the next one. There is almost never a gap. So each generation is in a way interpreting and hopefully also adding something to what is transmitted and continued. And so this is why I think the younger generations now have tools that we didn't have at their age. They are probably able to interpret. And now we go back to the whole discussion about the necessity for sustainability and attention to social and environmental injustice. They probably have a vision or perspectives that we don't have. So in a way, in this transmission, we should be able to learn from them too.”Manuela Lucá-Dazio is the newly appointed Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. “I think we have become quite disconnected. We should become more connected to rethink how to communicate and how to learn from the past. And how to use this incredible cultural heritage that we have and how to make it alive and how to translate it into our own times. We want to expand the tools. So maybe to become a little bit more open and imaginative in creating bridges between different fields of knowledge, different methods of teaching and learning, and different ways to transmit knowledge. We should all learn to be sustainable in our daily life and find the beauty in what proves to be sustainable. And we really need to start shifting our way of looking at things because sometimes sustainability, which is a priority right now, doesn't really coincide with let's say the cheapest solution or the best economical solution. But we have to decide our priorities. So the priority now is sustainability. We have to start to think about that. If I think back to the most recent winners of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, I can see a lot of really groundbreaking innovative practices being brought to the forefront.”Manuela Lucá-Dazio is the newly appointed Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. “There are a lot of women who influenced my life, starting with my mother. My mother is of those women who managed the house, our lives, our family. And she's still there with incredible intelligence, curiosity...She reads, and sometimes I have conversations with her about themes that relate to the Biennale, to art, to architecture, and I'm always surprised. How can she know all this? And sometimes there are even things that maybe I, I knew quite confidentially in my job, and I said, 'How did you get to know that? This is not public?' She said, 'Well, I read this in this newspaper, this in the other, and then I put the things together. It's quite clear.' You know, women have this power to analyze, to observe, then to elaborate, and act. I think history and tradition are super important, and this is the point because each generation is sort of translating to the next one. There is almost never a gap. Art history textbooks, so excellent for flattening curled-up rug corners and holding open doors, are expected to tell us the entire story of our civilization, one painting at a time. It's more than any book, even one that weighs a spine-crunching twenty-five pounds, should be expected to do. And it opens our eyes to the way that history is narrated, and taught, and even, it follows, to how paintings are displayed, and museums are curated. So much is touched on; so much is left out. It's too much, and far too little, all at once. Dr. Charlotte Mullins has decided to lean into the brevity, and in doing so, manages to tell us so much more. In her new book, "A Little History of Art," she tells the story of 100,000 years of art history, in, in her words, language akin to a haiku, every word intentionally chosen, every artwork telling its own story. She turns us into time-travelers in a scant 300 pages. We talked about reading art history, teaching art history, writing art history, and much more. Charlotte is the art critic for Country Life and has written for specialist titles and newspapers including the Financial Times, Telegraph, Independent on Sunday, RA Magazine, Art in America and Tate Magazine. A former editor of Art Quarterly, V&A Magazine and Art Review, she has appeared on BBC TV arts programmes and is a regular on BBC Radio 4's Front Row and Radio 3's Free Thinking. She is the author of more than a dozen books including a monograph on Rachel Whiteread and A Little Feminist History of Art, both for Tate, and the internationally acclaimed Painting People, and its companion volume Picturing People, both for Thames & Hudson.
