Duane Michals (b. 1932, McKeesport, PA) is one of the great photographic innovators of the last century, widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text. Michals first made significant, creative strides in the field of photography during the 1960s. In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema's frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works. Rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images' meaning and gives voice to Michals' singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once. Austin Davis was just a teenager when the trajectory of his life changed forever. A fatal shooting rattled his neighborhood in the working class Pennsylvania town of McKeesport, and spurred him to attend a city council meeting of all white officials who were skeptical of the concerned Black teenager raising his voice. “ The people closest to the pain should be closest to the power,” Davis says. “ I had a stake in that community just as much as they did as somebody who lived there and grew up there, and I wanted to make it a better place.” Nearly two decades later Davis was elected the Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, becoming the first African American to ever hold the office and the youngest Lieutenant Governor in the United States. On this episode of Paternal, Davis recounts how the son of a bus driver and hairdresser rose to one of the most powerful positions in Pennsylvania, why becoming a father helped him focus his energy on fixing the state's childcare problem, and where he finds hope for the future despite extreme partisanship and vitriol among today's politicians.
PennLive's Max Ralph and Bob Flounders break down some good news on the Penn State recruiting front on this episode. Max and Bob offer updates on a pair of running back targets, Harrisburg's Messiah Mickens and McKeesport's Kemon Spell. Penn State also got a commitment from talented 2027 wideout Khalil Taylor from Seton-LaSalle. Over the weekend, Penn State also provided a Blue-White game update with regards to seating at Beaver Stadium. Plus, Max and Bob share their thoughts on how Penn State's Pro Day played out for a few ex-Lions on Friday inside Holuba Hall. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We head to the rink for hockey talk with Dave Molinari, a Hall of Fame writer who has covered the Pittsburgh Penguins and NHL since 1983. His legendary dry, sharp wit comes through in tales about superstars Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby, as well as other great players who have produced five Stanley Cup championships during his tenure on the beat. Molinari tells us about coaching legends Herb Brooks and “Badger” Bob Johnson, a playoff game lasting five overtimes, and old arenas that made the hair stand up on his neck. You'll laugh about Gene Ubriaco's escape tunnel, Lou Angotti's epic rant, and witch doctors entering the press box. Molinari was enshrined in the media wing of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 when he received the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for print journalism, which is given each year by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. After beginning his journalism career at the McKeesport Daily News, Molinari joined the Pittsburgh Press as a copy editor in 1980. That paper assigned him to cover the Penguins and NHL in the summer of 1983. When the Pittsburgh Press folded at the end of 1992, Molinari moved to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and continued covering the Penguins and NHL until 2017, when his primary responsibility became Penn State football. He returned to hockey writing and the Penguins beat in June 2019 when, after 39-plus years at newspapers, he joined DK Pittsburgh Sports, a subscription website. Molinari began writing for a different website, Pittsburgh Hockey Now, in May 2022. After growing up in the McKeesport suburbs of Glassport and Elizabeth Township near Pittsburgh, Molinari earned a journalism degree from Penn State. He is the author of two books: “Mario Lemieux: Best There Ever Was,” written along with Ron Cook and Chuck Finder. “Best in the Game: The Turbulent Story of the Pittsburgh Penguins' Rise to Stanley Cup Champions” You can follow Dave on X: @MolinariPGH Learn more about your ad choices. Tanya Kach was going through a rebellious stage when her parents got divorced and her dad moved her to Mckeesport, PA. Middle school is a terrible time to be a new student and she struggled to make friends. She would often run away only to come home a few hours later and in February 1996, her dad and stepmom woke up to what they assumed was one of those days: Tanya was gone. Except this time, it would take over a decade for them to get answers and it was not at all what they expected. *Story starts minute 1:50 Produced by Jacob Hollabaugh Join our Patreon for bonus episodes, check out our website for merch, and follow us on TikTok, Instagram & YouTube

The NIEHS Superfund Research Program (SRP) is sponsoring a Risk e-Learning webinar series, hosted by CLU-IN, focused on research efforts to develop tools for sampling, monitoring, detecting, and characterizing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. The three-part series will feature SRP-funded researchers and collaborators whose research focuses, in part, on understanding the distribution and fate of PFAS in the environment. The second session will highlight case studies featuring SRP research to understand PFAS sources and to predict fate and transport. To learn about and register for the other sessions in this webinar series, please see the SRP website. Matthew Farrell is a Ph.D. candidate working in the Planchart Lab at North Carolina State University (NC State) working under Antonio Planchart, Ph.D. Matthew will present on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of several PFAS through aquatic food chains. He will expand on how this research was modeled through a system beginning with contaminated water and continuing with periphyton, larval mayflies, and zebrafish — tracking PFAS burdens through each step in the food chain. Mark Brusseau, Ph.D., of the University of Arizona will discuss the conceptual and mathematical models for PFAS retention being explored in his lab. He will also describe the chemometric tools used to develop the first quantitative structure-property relationship model for predicting interfacial adsorption coefficients for PFAS. This QSPR model can be combined with our comprehensive retention model to predict the retention and migration potential of PFAS in soil and groundwater systems. Carla Ng, PhD., of the University of Pittsburgh will provide an update on activities to reveal PFAS contamination in Southwestern Pennsylvania, an area that has received relatively little focus compared to other parts of the state. The talk will specifically address a case of accidental release in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and efforts to understand the life cycle and contribution of legacy and ongoing industrial activity on PFAS profiles in the region. Miming The Message with Pastor Joe Hill DTB The art form of Gospel Mime is a unique praise and worship practice within the African American Church community that combines popular gospel music with the theatrical medium of miming. One of the most recent forms of praise song and dance to emerge in Black congregations nation-wide, Gospel Mime was formally introduced into worship services in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1990s. Whereas traditional gospel performances are structured around live vocal and instrumental performances, Gospel Mime blends non-verbal communication with pre-recorded gospel music. As a ministry, Gospel Mime expands the line of liturgical song and dance, which has been an important part of Black Christian worship services since the 1970s, and has sparked debate about the role of dance and the body in worship practices. This thesis seeks to historicize Black gospel performance within the framework of an African American music continuum in order to locate Gospel Mime as a nationally mediated and popularized circuit of Black expressive culture that produces meaning—both celebrated and contested—about race, religion, and gender. By investigating the history, social meanings, and embodied practices of Gospel Mime as an innovative outlet for creative spiritual expression rooted in traditional gospel practice, this thesis analyzes Gospel Mime as a set of aesthetic values and practices that articulate African American identities through sound and gesture. Based on research conducted during 2015 and 2016 with Bethlehem Baptist Church, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, along with a self-identified “rogue” Gospel Mime who no longer performs in the church, this thesis serves to investigate two contrasting styles, or paradigms, of Gospel Mime: the mainstream style of anointed ministry, as it is understood and popularized within the Black church, and an alternative style that reinterprets the practice and actively acknowledges mainstream Gospel Mime as patriarchal and monolithic. By examining the performative and pedagogical ways in which the art form of Gospel Mime reappropriates entertainment outside of the African American music continuum and infuses it with innovative religious and spiritual expression, this thesis serves to highlight the social significance of Gospel Mime in the Black community.
