Jackie Dubrovich and I had a wonderful conversation about her families historical journey to to America. We also took a few minutes to share our similarities. Interestingly enough, both of us have stories to share of an Olympic experience, but from different perspectives. It was fun to reminisce about my experience at the 1980, XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. These particular winter games are remembered for the U.S. Men's Ice Hockey Team's "Miracle on Ice" gold-medal run plus Eric Hieiden's five gold medals in speed skating and so much more. I was a college student at the time and was hired to work in the transportation Dept and drive the athletes and country representatives to and from the Olympic Village into downtown Lake Placid for events and medal ceremonies. Lake Placid is a beautiful town nestled in the middle of the New York Adirondack Mountains. Go for a visit if you ever have an opportunity. It's absolutely beautiful.Ms. Dubrovich couldn't have been more gracious and happy to share stories of her mother and her mom's experience traveling by herself to America from Belarus, to marry the love of her life and become an American Citizen. Just think of the bravery it took for a young woman to board a flight and head into the unknown. She didn't speak english. She had one suitcase with her possessions and fifty dollars in her pocket.Valentina, according to her daughter is one of the hardest working moms she knows. Valentina worked in a Russian food store before coming to the United States. To this day she still works regularly and even on her days off, according to her daughter, "she still works hard." Jackie recalls her mother studying, from books she took out from the local library, for her test to become an American Citizen. Jackie and her parents spoke Russian to one another at home and with other family members. Jackie even continued her Russian studies at Columbia University in New York City . As a first generations American , she completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology, Human Rights and Russian Literature and Culture in 2016.Valentina could never have imagined in her wildest dreams that her daughter would become and Olympic Athlete, let alone a Gold Medalist in Fencing. Jackie and her parents had big dreams and expectations for their daughter, eldest of two children. At times, Jackie definitely felt the pressure to be the best of the best. She regularly recognized her parents high expectations for both she and her younger brother, also a professional athlete. But Jackie got to the point where she had to be able to handle her experiences and career as a professional on her own terms. As a family, they all learned how to communicate better and Jackie's parents learned to step back a little bit to let her handle her trajectory.Jackie and her partner, Brian Kaneshige, have opened a new fencing facility in Orange, New jersey called "Polaris Fencing Center." Both Jackie and Brian wanted to be able to give back to the next generation of kids who may not be able to afford years of training and expenses, yet are passionate about a career in Fencing.Valentina couldn't be more proud of her daughter and her accomplishments. After the pandemic and the 2020 Olympics, Jackie had a tough time. Not really sure if she was interested in training for another four years for the next Olympics. "In Eastern European culture, it's not very common to talk about your feelings, but my parents did a really good job, to know what to say when I was low." Both parents supported her then as well as now.Website: https://www.polarisfencing.com/. @polarisfencingcenterSOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jackiedubrovich/?hl=enLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackiedubrovich/ "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. "Someone who was always true to himself, failed, got up again, but ultimately changed the sport that gave him everything and inspired a whole new generation of kids. That to me is bigger than any medal I could ever win." - Miles Chamley-Watson This episode is one where we learn about a sport unfamiliar to us but one rich with history and challenges and how no matter what the competition is, the path to success is paved with dedication, discipline and a degree of mental toughness that brings out the best within us, when we least expect it. In partnership with Fanatics, Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with veteran Olympic and World Champion fencer Miles Chamley-Watson as he opens up about his journey from a young athlete facing adversity to becoming a trailblazer in sports, culture and mental health as he used his own experiences and lessons to shape the success he's had in and out of athletics. Wearing armor and always a defense mode is a part of his sport, but in our conversation with Miles, he drops his sword and lets his guard down, opening up about the unlikely path into fencing, mental toughness, his effort to bring his sport to media forefront, rise to fame and how his family dynamic and recent heartache has changed his life perspective. Miles explains to the guys about how putting on that fencing mask for the first time made him feel like a superhero, and gave him a sense of purpose. The sport- which has been around for centuries- was something that fell into his lap as a 6'5'' dude from a mix of the UK, New York, and Philly. Yet, he fell in love with fencing, and found it helped him manage his ADD & ADHD, giving him something to focus on. Even though he used to hide his love for the sport after getting judged for being an “unconventional” athlete, he's now all about encouraging kids to follow their own path, no matter how different it might be. The guys go further into the conversation exploring the personal struggles Miles has faced within fencing, which is a predominantly white sport, sharing stories on facing racism in the craft, and how those challenges have only fueled his drive to create real change and make a larger impact. Making a name for himself wasn't easy at first, but through his charisma, unique style and success, Miles' meteoric rise to the top of sports has helped put fencing on the global stage. Garnering international fame through Olympics and becoming a world champion while juggling his star-studded personal life of fashion shows, Met Gala, A-list friendships and global brand campaigns. Miles reveals advice he received from Kobe Bryant during the 2016 Olympics that changed his outlook on wins and losses and molded a mindset of having a short term memory in terms of success and failures. As the conversation continues, we get into more sensitive topics like family, emotions, and mental health. He talks about the importance of opening up, especially for Black men, and how he's learned to release emotions that he bottled up for years. Sharing stories of his up-brining, bond with his mother and stepfather, reconnecting with his real father and reveals a personal matter of his sister now undergoing a serious health battle....Miles stresses importance of forgiveness and finding peace as life is too short to hold onto stress and unhappiness. He's determined to be an advocate for diversity in sports, leave a lasting impact on the sport and inspire the next generation of athletes to stay true to who they are. And thanks to SNICKERS. Hong Kong fencer Cheung Ka-long's victory over Italy's Filippo Macchi at the Paris Olympics has sparked an exchange of insults on social media, with Cheung's supporters celebrating his win with posts about pineapple pizzas—widely considered a culinary blunder in Italian cooking. Cheung made Hong Kong history in July by beating Macchi 15-14 in the men's foil. That triumph made Cheung, who had won the Tokyo Games in 2021, the first Hong Konger to bag two gold medals. The bout required three stoppages for video reviews to determine the deciding point as the fencing machine registered scores from both fencers at about the same time. The final point was eventually awarded to Cheung, sparking protests from the Italian side. The Italian Fencing Federation said in a statement that it would file a complaint to the International Olympic Committee and the International Fencing Federation about what it called “unacceptable” refereeing. Italy's Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malagò suggested the selection of referees was problematic, saying “the two judges were from Taipei and Korea in a final between Italy and Hong Kong.” Macchi's supporters also left comments on Cheung's Instagram account to express their grievances. One comment alleged that Cheung's championship was “robbed” and Macchi should be the final winner. In a mockery response, Hong Kongers replied with comments on Instagram about their love for pineapple pizza to defend Cheung and said they would have a lot of pineapple pizzas to celebrate the win. Pizza Hut in Hong Kong and neighboring gambling city Macao also offered free pineapple toppings on any pizzas when dining at its branches on July 30 and 31 to celebrate the victory. But Macchi eventually earned respect from some Hong Kongers after he posted on his Instagram to say that he knows both referees and he did not want to point a finger at them for his loss. He added their decisions have to be respected. Cheung's win also marked the first time Hong Kong has secured two gold medals in the same Olympics. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

In this episode, we welcome back to the podcast Supriya Nair, a 14-year-old foil and epee fencer from Redmond, Wash., who fences with the Rain City Fencing Center. When we last spoke to Supriya about a year ago, she had just received an award for her groundbreaking experiment, Neurofencing, which explored the importance of pre-bout warm-ups through a neuroscientific lens. Now, we're catching up with Supriya to see how her research has evolved and what new insights she has for us.If you missed our first conversation with Supriya last year, you might want to consider listening to Episode 8 to hear how this all got started. But to catch you up, Supriya had always heard from her coaches that pre-bout warmups were important, but wondered if there was any quantitative data to prove it. So she set out to investigate this for herself — using special equipment to test that hypothesis. The result was an award-winning experiment she calls Neurofencing. Now she's back with even more data and insights. We had the pleasure of interviewing Fencer over Zoom video! The Los Angeles based rock trio, Fencer, has released their long awaited self-titled debut album, via Blood Blast Distribution. This marks the band's first self-produced release, composed of 10-tracks and what is considered to be their most authentic work yet.Speaking on the album release, vocalist Field Cate shares:"Very excited to finally have our first album out in the world. We've worked really hard on this and feel it's the most accurate representation of what we're all about, proud to have it as the first full length release in our discography."Not only was their debut album self-produced, but it was mixed by Henry Lunetta (5 Seconds Of Summer, State Champs, Grayscale) and mastered by Zach Fisher (Weezer, Rancid, Bad Religion). Prior to today's release, Fencer had previously dropped tracks "Junebug", "Sanitarium", and "Joseph Courtney" which had racked up over 1.5 million listens across all streaming platforms.Keep an eye out for more Fencer news coming soon.ABOUT FENCERFencer, the self-defined garage opera band, is leading a new era of rock music with their own undeniably, dynamic sound.
