Dillie Keane is one-third of iconic Cabaret trio Fascinating Aida. She is presently in Australia for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, where alongside her partners in song, Liza Pulman and Adèle Anderson, Fascinating Aida will present a 40th anniversary show. Since their first performance together in 1983, the trio have racked-up millions of internet followers, performed in the world's most prestigious venues and have been showered with awards and plaudits galore. Proving they're still in their glorious prime, these mistresses of their craft ring in this four-decade milestone with their trademark diamond-sharp satire, lyrical wit and belligerent sass.  The bare bones of Dillie's life are these. Born Portsmouth 1952. Father a GP. Three much older, very nice siblings who have done nothing but grace the name of Keane and distinguish themselves in every way. Family despaired of Dillie ever conforming.  Educated at Portsmouth High School (very happy) and then at successive Convents of the Sacred Heart (first Hove, where she was miserable but learned remedial curtseying and sang all the time, then Woldingham where she was utterly and completely miserable and still sang all the time). “She'll come to no good, that girl!” opined one of the nuns as her parents took her away after she was expelled.  Safely at university, she drank and shagged and partied like a girl released from a convent and became a leading light of the drama society and ended her first year being elected Miss Elegance, hahaha! After three years of this divinely crazed existence, her mortal frame nearly gave out. A spell in hospital exposed her complete unfitness for the life of a musicologist. As her parents took her away – she was too ill to take her Part 2 and couldn't face doing 5 years of a 4 year degree – her Professor suggested that a career in Stage Management might suit.  Finally, she took control of her life. A spell as secretary to the Deputy MD of a leading advertising firm in London gave her financial independence, and she secretly auditioned for LAMDA. The day she got her acceptance letter was the best day of her life. Having flunked out of university, her parents were reluctant to fork out for 3 more years of further education, so she wrote to anyone she could think of who might help. Eventually, the fabled Jim Slater of Slater Walker stepped in with a scholarship and paid her tuition fees. Her defeated parents agreed to give her £100 per term towards living costs, and she was able to accept her place on the course.  Those three years were a thrilling ride. LAMDA was everything she hoped for and more, though trying to keep body and soul together was wonderfully crazy. She had a stall in the Portobello Road every Saturday, where she and a friend sold handmade shopping bags, aprons and second-hand clothes they'd collected from friends and strangers. She temped in the evenings and throughout the holidays, became an artist's model, did bar work, biked everywhere in London and hitched everywhere else. She also played piano in various hotels, nightclubs and restaurants, and looking back she thinks she must have cut an odd figure with her homemade clothes and Cole Porter songs. Two summer months in Sweden playing piano in a Stockholm nightclub hardened her for the life to come.  Acting jobs followed. Then the songs started popping out. And with the acting jobs, new friends who also sang and were willing to sing her songs. And with all that came the gigs and the birth of Fascinating Aïda.  The Adelaide Festival Centre presents FASCINATING AÏDA - THE 40th ANNIVERSARY SHOW!

What links carol singing with dogs? Medieval musicologist Micah Mackay reveals that carols aren't just for Christmas – they began life as communal songs for anything from lullabies to drinking songs. She explains the detective work required to bring to life a fundamentally oral culture from a small number of manuscript sources, and what the origin of carols can tell us about the concept of Englishness in the medieval period. Englishness is also a key point of interrogation for Dr Caroline Lesemann Elliott, whose research explores the fascinating world of exiled English convents in Continental Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, focusing especially on their musical sound world. We hear from the Basilinda Consort, an ensemble Caroline founded in order to perform the music they discovered and reconstructed as part of their research. The host is BBC New Generation Thinker Leah Broad, author of Quartet, a group biography of four women composers, which came out earlier this year.Dr Caroline Lesemann Elliott recently completed a PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London and a Bodleian Visiting Fellowship in Music. They are founder and director of the Basilinda Consort, an early music ensemble dedicated to exploring the lives of English Christian women religious. Andrew deep dives into the fascinating world of comedian, author, and human rights advocate Sandi Toksvig who shares some of the experiences that have fueled her fervent commitment to equality and justice. From school days spent at a French-speaking convent (where she masterminded a school rebellion), to earlier this year challenging the Archbishop of Canterbury over the Church of England's stance on same-sex marriage, it's a thought-provoking conversation that's equal parts humour and heart.   For more info on Sandi's public call earlier this year for Church of England bishops to be removed from the House of Lords over its continued opposition to same-sex marriage: https://humanists.uk/2023/02/03/sandi-toksvig-calls-for-cofe-bishops-to-be-removed-from-lords-over-same-sex-marriage/   What I Believe was the title of two separate essays by the philosopher Bertrand Russell and the philosopher EM Forster in the early 20th century. These two humanists set out their approach to life, their fundamental worldview, in a way that was accessible to all. In this podcast, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, Andrew Copson, speaks to humanists today to understand more about they believe, to understand more about the values, convictions, and opinions they live by.    Humanists UK is the national charity working on behalf of non religious people to advance free thinking and promote a tolerant society. Reading Counter Culture is like reading the "Cliff or Spark Notes" of an extraordinary family's journey from the start of the 20th century to today. It is the tale of an era in American history as witnessed and acted upon by a family of first and second generation immigrants to the US - in which each decade yielded countless stories that, told over, would form the template of an American success story for the ages. Courage, tragedy, humor, resiliance, happiness, sadness and hope all were a part of the Dunfey family tableau. I describe the book as Cliff notes because 360 pages just cannot do justice to the colorful and amazing story of this family of 14. Having been through the process of interviewing only some of the extraordinary people profiled in this memoire I can tell you that a 20-30 episode podcast series would be needed to even come close to doing justice to their legacy. Perhaps this podcast will lead to just such a series but understanding the basics of the rise of the Dunfey family is a study in the American dream and a celebration of how tenacity, hard work and a deep and abiding commitment to community, service, social justice and progressive ideals can change history. In the summer of 1913 two cottages in the beachside community of Salisbury Massachusetts housed separate "clubs" of young single women and men from the Mills of Lowell. It was here that Leroy "Roy" Dunfey and Catherine ("Kate") Manning met, fell in love and - by labor day - were engaged. Together they would raise a family that helped reshape the world.

Convents are meant for praying…...and love affairs…...and to be burnt down. Tune in to learn about Julie d’ Aubigny AKA La Maupin; the swashbuckling, bisexual, grand lover of a 17-century swordsperson who also sang in the opera on the side. Karamia tells Emily of this LGBTQ heroine that shocked everyone in France except for the Sun King, as well as her future biographers, whose fragile male egos could simply not handle her energy. She joined a nunnery to be with her girlfriend, and in an epic tale of body-snatching and arseny, burnt down the entire convent to escape her lover's overbearing father. She regularly beat trios of men in illegal duels and occasionally turned the men she stabbed through the shoulders into her side pieces. She also stunned Paris with her beauty on stage, and the best part, she did it all while dressed in "men’s" clothing. Pour yourself some eggnog, put on your best swashbuckling pants, and join us in our pillow forts for our new favorite Harlot! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

You are listening to the Greater Glory of God podcast presenting JOURNEY WITH MARY Episode no 7 And I am Fr. George Mary Claret. In the Episode, we reflected on the “NECESSITY TO BE SILENT AND IN SOLITUDE LIKE MARY: to be attuned to the promptings of the Spirit Have you finished the reflection and reading? How do you feel? In this 7th Episode we are going to reflect on - SAYING “YES” – COOPERATION IN THE MISSION OF GOD We have reflected enough on the nature of our being – our predestination, created by God in his own image and likeness, being special & precious to God, dedicated to God, and the necessity to be silent and in solitude. We are going to the next stage towards our end – our decisive actions, from being to becoming and doing! Through the practice of silence and solitude, we can raise our awareness and consciousness to that of the Divine, where we can experience and receive the flow of grace from God. We let God love us. The lover becomes like the beloved and the INCARNATION is the expression and effect of the love God has for us. It was not to be in our weak fragile state forever, rather to raise our state to that of His. The Son became one of us – a member of the Human Family – so that we could become members of the Divine Family. Once the beloved has fully experienced the love of the lover, the beloved is enabled to become the lover. The change of role in this love relationship with God is very essential. God who loves us desires our love for Him, that's why He asked us to love Him exclusively with our entire being, without any limit. John 19:28 “I am thirsty.” It is the cry of the Divine for human love as have many Saints written describing this verse. St. Teresa of Calcutta was very devoted to the thirsting Christ on the Cross. “I Thirst” is written along the Crucifix in the Chapels of the Convents of the Missionaries of Charity. She told the sisters: “‘I thirst' is something much deeper than Jesus just saying ‘I love you.' Until you know deep inside that JESUS THIRSTS FOR YOU—you can't begin to know who He wants to be for you. Or who He wants you to be for Him.” (March 1993, Letter to the Missionaries of Charity) About this we have already reflected in the 5th episode DEDICATED TO GOD – Total CONSECRATION – choosing God above everyone and everything else. If you have not listened to it, please do listen and reflect on that as well. We receive God's love We learn to see things from the Divine perspective The fruits of this state is: Ø To see as God sees Ø To think as He thinks Ø The ability to see the BEYOND – not merely the visible Ø Readiness to see the BEYOND The decision to say YES is the result of : - The ability to see as God sees - Willingness to die to one's desires and plans - Ability to see beyond the temporary in the light of the permanent - Readiness to give up oneself - And most importantly, the expression of one's love for God and human beings Please visit my blog for the questions and biblical passages for reflection: https://frcgeorgemclaret.blogspot.com/2020/11/journey-with-mary-7-saying-yes.html --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/greatergloryofgod/message

26 July 2020 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time   Matthew 13:44-52 + Homily   16 Minutes 35 Seconds   Link to the Readings:   http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/072620.cfm (New American Bible, Revised Edition)   From the parish bulletin of Sunday 26 July 2020:      As a psychosis, “self-mutilation syndrome” is rooted in self-loathing and obsessive-compulsive behavior. Whole cultures can be afflicted with a similar compulsion to injure themselves. Nowadays it is called a “cancel culture.” To topple statues and burn churches is a metaphor for self-loathing rather than reason.     In their modern aesthetic recklessness, nations begin to disdain what Matthew Arnold called “the best which has been thought and said.” Even people who do not read much still can see much, and they can see that destruction of great buildings is the grammar of self-mutilation. There was a sigh of relief when the French government announced that the cathedral of Paris would be restored exactly as it had been. But you need only look at some recent architectural horrors, like the Centre Pompidou, to appreciate that the preservation of Notre Dame was a close call. Consider the 1925 Plan Voisin of Le Corbusier for replacing central Paris with buildings that looked like refrigerators, to see the fabric of a society without a soul.     The burning of the cathedral of Nantes was reported with practically no mention of the winter of 1793-1794, when over 14,000 Catholic counterrevolutionaries were slaughtered in that region. Jean-Baptiste Carrier, the sadistic officer of the Revolution, mocked his own name by drowning more than four thousand priests, nuns, mothers and infants in boats designed for what he called “Revolutionary Baptisms.” At the same time, another Jean-Baptiste, Gobel, was made Archbishop of Paris in place of Antoine de Juigné, provided he “take the knee” to the Revolution. All atheistic revolutionaries kill their fomenters: Just as the architect of the Terror, Robespierre, was guillotined by his Terror, so were Carrier and Gobel. In a kind of cultural doppelganger today, writers for our most “liberal” periodicals are being fired for not being pure enough for the anarchists who have made their moral impurity into a religion.     Since the late 1960s, disciples of Le Corbusier among the liturgical “wreckovaters” denuded churches as arrogantly as the cults of theanthropy in the French Revolution. Convents subscribing to ephemeral “renewal” have now become nursing homes for women who once thought that labyrinths could be stairways to Heaven.     We are now in a spiritual combat as monumental as World II. In 1944, when the Nazis demanded that the Americans surrender during the Battle of the Bulge, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe replied, “Nuts!” The vernacularism was unfamiliar to the Germans, and so another message was sent: "Du kannst zum Teufel gehen."—You can go to the Devil.     No victory is secured by kneeling to the Enemy. Those who do, will be the next in line for the guillotine. The Holy Church has the best translation for “Nuts” when proclaimed in defiance of the Anti-Christ: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty…”

Just five weeks after its publication in January 1836, Awful Disclosures of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery, billed as an escaped nun's shocking exposé of convent life, had already sold more than 20,000 copies. The book detailed gothic-style horror stories of licentious priests and abusive mothers superior, tortured nuns and novices, and infanticide. By the time the book was revealed to be a fiction and the author, Maria Monk, an imposter, it had already become one of the nineteenth century's best-selling books. In antebellum America only one book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, outsold it.The success of Monk's book was no fluke, but rather a part of a larger phenomenon of anti-Catholic propaganda, riots, and nativist politics. The secrecy of convents stood as an oblique justification for suspicion of Catholics and the campaigns against them, which were intimately connected with cultural concerns regarding reform, religion, immigration, and, in particular, the role of women in the Republic. At a time when the term "female virtue" pervaded popular rhetoric, the image of the veiled nun represented a threat to the established American ideal of womanhood. Unable to marry, she was instead a captive of a foreign foe, a fallen woman, a white slave, and a foolish virgin. In the first half of the nineteenth century, ministers, vigilantes, politicians, and writers--male and female--forged this image of the nun, locking arms against convents. The result was a far-reaching antebellum movement that would shape perceptions of nuns, and women more broadly, in America.-Cassandra L. Yacovazzi is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. Her work focuses on 19th and 20th-century American women's history and the intersection of gender, religion, and popular culture.
