Graeme Macrae Burnet chats to Paul Burke about the concluding volume of the Gorsky trilogy A CASE OF MATRICIDE, Simenon, Zola, small town France & Kilmarnock. A CASE OF MATRICIDE: Chief Inspector Gorski returns … In the unremarkable French town of Saint-Louis, a mysterious stranger stalks the streets; an elderly woman believes her son is planning to do away with her; a prominent manufacturer drops dead. Between visits to the town's hostelries, Chief Inspector Georges Gorski ponders the connections, if any, between these events, while all the time grappling with his own domestic and existential demons.Graeme Macrae Burnet once again pierces the respectable bourgeois façade of small-town life in this, the concluding part of his trilogy of Gorski novels. He injects a wry humour into the tiniest of details and delves into the darkest recesses of his characters' minds, but above all provides an entertaining, profound and moving read.Graeme Macrae Burnet is one of the UK's brightest literary talents. His second novel, His Bloody Project, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2016, won the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year Award 2016, and was shortlisted for the LA Times Book Awards 2017. It has been published around the world. His fourth novel, Case Study, was longlisted for the Booker Prize 2022. The two previous novels in Graeme's Gorski trilogy have also received widespread critical praise and have become cult-like classics in several countries for their multilayered references and metafictional elements.Recommendations Georges Simenon Maigret, Roman Durs, Mo Hayder The Treatment, Alba de Céspedes Forbidden Notebook Paul Burke writes for Monocle Magazine, Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover and the European Literature Network, Punk Noir Magazine (fiction contribution). He is also a CWA Historical Dagger Judge 2024. Episode 57 Bob Gorsky of Lyon, Gorsky, & Gilbert LLP. Texas Super Lawyer When Police are put into a position to use deadly force or they have incurred an injustice they may have to make a phone call for help. For over 45 years attorney Bob Gorsky has picked up the phone when first responders call in need of help. Members of the Dallas Police Association, Dallas PD's largest association, and many other Texas Officer and Firefighter groups have had to make that call to Bob. Mr. Gorsky grew up in Buffalo, New York and graduated from the famed Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1978 and quickly began getting involved with the defense of Texas peace officer in the Dallas Area. He is the founding partner of Lyon, Gorsky, & Gilbert LLP and has responded to over 2000 critical incidents since 1983. He is believed to be the first attorney in Texas to regularly respond to officer – involved critical incidents. In addition to the development of the attorney's role in responding to critical incidents, he was the first to attorney to represent an officer at an Internal Affairs Division. (Circa 1985) He has passionately fought for the rights of first responders throughout his career and continues to do so to this day. In this episode we detail some of those historic fights like the Ron Iscaro case that occurred on August 25th 1983 when Bob had to fight to create light duty positions for injured officers. Before this case there were no light duty positions for officers that were injured and unable to return to full duty. There has not been a major fight for Officers against the City of Dallas or the Dallas Police Department that Bob's expertise and true dedication hasn't played a role in those fights. Thank you, Bob for all that you do and being our guardian and protector for our first responders. www.lyongorsky.com Critical Incidents: On August 25th 1983 Dallas Officer Ron Iscaro responded to 1960 Toronto St. and was shot in the temple with a shotgun. Officer Iscaro was only 23 years old at the time of this incident.

As a young girl, Teresa was obsessed with the stories of the saints and the brave knights riding to religious martyrdom. When she was seven, she even tried to run away from home to join the holy wars, so it surprises no one when she takes her vows and puts on the nun's uniform. When terrible illness strikes her, keeping her in bed nearly a year, her religious convictions deepen and she turns to prayer and a personal relationship with God to help her manage the difficult days. Then, when Jesus himself appears to her in visions, Teresa finds herself in a position of influence in the church and the community at large. With both her country and her Church facing divisive political battles, can Teresa use her direct line to God to make a difference in these troubling times? This week, Sara brings us the somewhat strange, but true story of Marion Stokes. A card carrying member of the Communist party, Marion was one of the most intelligent and articulate voices on local television in Philadelphia in the late 1960s, where she also happened to learn the power television carried across the airwaves, and the great influence producers had over the content and messages being broadcast. Then, in 1979 when the Iranian hostage crisis dominated airwaves and established the 24/7 news cycle, Marion decided that someone had to archive it all, and she hit the record button on her VCR and betamax players. Her players don't stop recording until 35 years later, when she breathes her last. She recorded over 71,000 tapes worth of television, and bought hundreds of thousands of newspapers, magazines, books, and even Apple computers. Was she a genius? Was hers a mission of madness? Creating a culture of trust is critical at any company, especially one focused on innovation. Alex Gorsky, April and Jay Graham Fellow at the Bush Institute and Johnson & Johnson Executive Chairman, discusses how J&J's COVID vaccine came to be, why asking for forgiveness not permission is critical to innovation, and how his parents shaped him into the leader he is today.
This week Sara brings us the story of the first woman to win three gold medals at a single Olympics - Wilma Rudolph! She is only 16 years old when she competes in her first Olympic Games as an amateur athlete. A mere four years later, at 20, she wins three golds and is declared "the Fastest Woman in History." Her story is even more incredible when you find out that as a young child and polio survivor doctors told her she would never walk again. How did she beat the odds, discard her awful leg brace, and run her way to become one of the top athletes of the 20th century? This week, Sara brings us the story of Ida B. Wells! She worked in Civil Rights all her life, early on suing (and winning!) against a railroad company for forcing her to vacate her seat so that white people could sit down. She's also the woman who ventured into the Southern states during a time of mass-lynchings to investigate the epidemic of unreported hate crimes. Her work made people in the Northern United States aware of the vicious hate crimes that were happening, and that they were targeting successful black businesspeople under the guise of various made-up charges. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. We welcome CEO of Johnson & Johnson, Alex Gorsky to the podcast! Alex is a West Point Grad and spent six years in the U.S. Army, finishing his military career with the rank of captain. Randy and Alex talk about his upbringing, his time in the service, and how it felt to take a leading role in the worldwide effort to produce life-saving vaccines to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to Alex for appearing on the show and for his continued leadership and service for the American people!
Today, Sara brings us the incredible story of Helen Hulick Beebe! Helen is working as a teacher in Los Angeles in 1938, and when she's called to court to testify in a burglary case she inadvertently causes quite the ruckus by...wearing pants! The Judge is outraged and reschedules the court date with an order to wear a dress when she returns, but Helen refuses to comply and the ire of the Judge boils over. The whole ordeal that follows lasts months and makes headlines across the country, putting Helen and her "slacks-tivism" into the spotlight. However, her story doesn't end there. Helen goes on to pioneer a new method of teaching for deaf students. Known today as the auditory-verbal approach, her method has opened the door for hearing impaired students and their families, making it possible to interact with the hearing world at a level that was previously impossible. How did Helen's battle against the pants-hating Judge ultimately play out? And how did she chart a pathway to develop, then expand the auditory-verbal approach? Today Sara brings us the story of one of the most epic warrior Queens in history: BOUDICA! When the Romans destroy everything most precious to her, take her land, enslave her people and lash her publicly - this Queen of the Iceni tribe (in pre-celtic Britain) doesn't sit around and cry about it. She rallies her Celts, combining the warring tribes to lead a legendary show of force against the Roman colonies and the Roman Legions themselves. This week, Sara brings us the story of Alexya Salvador, the first transgender pastor in Brazil and all of Latin America, and the first transgender person to adopt a child in Brazil. As a young child, Alexya found great solace and belonging in the Catholic Church, so much so, that she entered seminary to begin a path to priesthood. But as her studies progressed she uncovered deeply held core teachings that made her feel like a criminal just for being gay. Alexya's story is one of overcoming the great sorrow of losing her faith in the church, only to discover the true face of God and a new church family, ultimately becoming a beacon of hope and light for all transgender people in Brazil and South America (who face increasingly hateful rhetoric & violence just for being LGBTQ+). — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. BYSK is kicking off PRIDE month by revisiting one of our favorite previous Broad episodes - MARSHA "Pay It No Mind" JOHNSON! Marsha was one of the figureheads in the fight for LGBTQ rights and a true legend. She was (allegedly) at the Stonewall Inn on the night the riots broke out, kicking off the LGBTQ revolution. She also helped organize the first Pride Parade and founded STAR house, a home for abandoned or homeless LGBT children and young adults to keep them off the streets (her story inspired the hit show “Pose” on FX!). She always wore her flower crowns, but her life was far from glamorous. From life on the streets and sleeping under flower tables, to jail cells, to fighting for drag queen respect in the gay community, and eventually her untimely and tragic death, Marsha was a Queen who deeply understood you only have one life, and you've got to live it to it's fullest, brightest and most beautiful.
This week, Sara brings us the story of one of India's greatest heroines and rebel leader Rani Lakshmi Bai! As the British East India Company tightened its grip on India by violating Hindu traditions, stealing land from Indian landowners and replacing India's leaders with British military officials, the people of India grew more and more angry. When rebellion breaks out in Jhansi, Queen Lakshmi Bai tries to play by the British "rules" to maintain order, but when they betray her and threaten her execution this badass rani takes no time in combining forces with the other rebellion leaders in a display of force the Brits are not expecting. How does this "Jezebel of India" build an army, escape a siege, ride almost 100 miles in a day and lead the rebel armies into combat? This week, Sara brings us the incomparable Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi! She is considered one of the foremost painters of the 17th century, eclipsing her father's skill and considered more brazen than Caravaggio himself. Due to her own exceptional skill and brilliant business tactics, Artemisia's popularity exploded and she painted commissions for the most elite patrons across all of Europe, becoming so successful she didn't even "need a husband" anymore. However, much of her life and success was overshadowed by her sexual assault at 17 years old and the public trial that followed. Much of her work reflects that brutal experience, too. Artemisia and her work has recently come back into the spotlight in the wake of the #metoo movement; Her paintings have become emblematic of the strong, powerful woman in the face of the violence inflected upon her. Her story is one of great independent success despite the odds and she is most definitely a BROAD You Should Know! — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. This week, Sara sheds some light on The Invisible Battalion! While Ukrainian women have been defending their country on the front lines for decades, it wasn't until 2018 that they were actually allowed to serve in combat ranks, thanks, in large part, to a massive campaign known as "The Invisible Battalion," led by the NGO Institute of Gender Programs (invisiblebattalion.org). The women leading this movement have opened the door for Ukrainian women's rights, and their powerful campaign also gives us a stark and heartbreaking window into the war Ukrainians have been fighting to keep their homeland since 2014. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Many folks will quote (and misquote) Dr. King as it's convenient for them, but on BROADS YOU SHOULD KNOW we want to take this time to remind you about his stalwart partner in life and legacy: CORETTA SCOTT KING! Coretta actively participated in the Civil Rights movement even before she met Martin, and subsequently throughout her life, leading marches and protests and organizing around the country. She is also widely know to have been a heavy influence in MLK's stances on nonviolence and justice for all. After his assassination, she remained active, protesting the Vietnam War, the second Iraq War, and advocating for women who suffered during Apartheid - and that's just scratching the surface! #MLK, the man we celebrate today across the country, quite simply would not be who he was or have accomplished all he did without Coretta Scott King, his wife. Listen to this reBROADcast of our episode on Coretta to hear her full story!

When assigned the impossible task of managing a war hospital built atop a festering cesspool during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale rose to the task and went above and beyond—cleaning the entire building, introducing hygiene practices into the daily routines, and lowering the hospital's death rate from nearly 50% to 2.2%.
