From the bestselling author of Born Survivors, a novel inspired by the powerful true story of a man who risked everything to protect children in Auschwitz. Fredy built a wall against suffering in their hearts . . . Amid the brutality of the Holocaust, one bright spot shone inside the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz. In the shadows of the smokestacks was a wooden hut where children sang, staged plays, wrote poetry, and learned about the world. Within those four walls, brightly adorned with hand-painted cartoons, the youngest prisoners were kept vermin-free, received better food, and were even taught to imagine having full stomachs and a day without fear. Their guiding light was a twenty-seven-year-old gay, Jewish athlete: Fredy Hirsch. Being a teacher in a brutal concentration camp was no mean feat. Forced to beg senior SS officers for better provisions, Fredy risked his life every day to protect his beloved children from mortal danger. But time was running out for Fredy and the hundreds in his care. Could this kind, compassionate, and brave man find a way to teach them the one lesson they really needed to know: how to survive? The Teacher of Auschwitz shines a light on a truly remarkable individual and tells the inspiring story of how he fought to protect innocence and hope amid depravity and despair. Wendy Holden and Jane Thynne are both former journalists turned authors. In fact, they both worked in newsrooms together back in the 1980s.In this episode, they bring their journalistic competitiveness to the Book Off, but who will triumph? They also discuss their new novels, their fascination with WW2, why we need to keep telling historic stories and how fun research can be. They also give us some brilliant reading recommendations too!THE BOOK OFF'Little Women' by Louisa May AlcottVS'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy' by John Le CarreHere's a little more on Wendy and Jane's books:The Teacher Of Auschwitz by Wendy HoldenAt the dark heart of the Holocaust, there was a wooden hut whose walls were painted with cartoons; a place where children sang, staged plays and wrote poetry. Safely inside, but still in the shadow of the chimneys, they were given better food, kept free of vermin, and were even taught meditation to imagine full stomachs and a day without fear. The man who became their guiding light was a young Jewish prisoner named Fredy Hirsch. But being a teacher in such a brutal concentration camp was no mean feat. Whether it was begging the SS for better provisions, or hiding his homosexuality from his persecutors, he risked his life every day for one thing: to protect the children from the mortal danger they all faced.Time is running out for Fredy and the hundreds of children in his care. Can he find a way to teach them the one lesson they really need to know: how to survive?Midnight In Vienna by Jane ThynneAs war looms over Britain and there is talk of gas masks and blackout, people are understandably jumpy and anxious. Stella Fry, who's been working in Vienna for a Jewish family, returns home with no job and a broken heart. She answers an advertisement from a famous mystery writer, Hubert Newman, who needs a manuscript typed. She takes on the job and is shocked the next day to learn of the writer's sudden, unexplained death. She is even more surprised when, twenty-four hours later, she receives Newman's manuscript and reads the Dedication:To Stella, spotter of mistakes.Harry Fox, formerly of Special Branch and brilliant at surveillance, has been suspended for some undisclosed misdemeanor. He has his own reasons for being interested in Hubert Newman. He approaches Stella Fry to share his belief that the writer's death was no accident. What's more, since she was the last person to see Newman, she could be in danger herself. Hosted on Acast.

Watch this episode with Wendy Holden, the author of 'The Teacher of Aushwitz' a stirring, sad, hopeful novel about a 28 year old gay Jewish inmate of Auschwitz who started up a children's barrick in the concentration camp to teach the children how to deal with the barbarism of their environment, and learn studies and creativity. Fredy was able to open the school through courageous negotiations with the SS, including Joseph Mengele. Wendy, a former war correspondent, is a magnificent author (of over 40 books) and guest. I enjoyed my time with her so much, her stories, her insights and her unparalleled positivity about human nature. Wendy is highly inspiring.

How do you lead young adults effectively in the current cultural moment we are in?We are pumped to have Pastor Fredy Orozco, Young Adult Pastor at Northview Community Church, join us to tackle this very question. Fredy and his wife Rebecca have been married for 10 years and are the proud parents of three lively children: Isaiah (4), August (2), and Olive (1). For the past eight years, they have poured their hearts into serving at Northview Community Church, where Fredy has been pastor of young adult ministry for the last three years. Fredy deeply loves team sports, revelling in the excitement of soccer, football, and basketball games. He is also deeply committed to theology and has dedicated himself to teaching the Scriptures with clarity and passion to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. In this episode, we explore one of the most pressing and complex conversations facing Young Adult pastors today: how to lead with both truth and grace in discussions of sexuality and gender. We aim to equip pastors and leaders with biblical wisdom, practical strategies, and approaches to engage in these conversations without fear while remaining faithful to Scripture. We explore how to create a welcoming space for tough questions, share the historic Christian view with clarity and love, and navigate these topics' cultural and emotional complexities. How can pastors balance theological integrity with genuine empathy? How can they prepare themselves for grace-filled discussions, especially when faced with disagreement or pain? And how can they help young adults discern biblical truth in a world shaped by deconstructionism and postmodern thought?Join us as we unpack these questions and provide encouragement for leaders striving to reflect Jesus in every conversation.Follow Fredy: IG-@fredy.bro.rozcoCheck out Fredy's sermons
