When TVs entered living rooms and Cinerama lit up movie screens, teens went nuts for Troy Donahue. Born Merle Johnson Jr. he was discovered at The Golden Pheasant restaurant in Calabasas by bigwigs, William Asher and James Sheldon. Signed to Rock Hudson's manager Henry Wilson, Troy won the role of Johnny in A Summer Place and was a teen idol by the morning after opening night. A screen dream, Troy's reality was a nightmare. Author Michael Gregg Michaud has written books about Sal Mineo, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Diane Mcbain. Michael joins us to discuss his biography, Inventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie Star.Long intrigued by the darker reality behind Hollywood's seemingly perfect presentation, Michael helps us understand the challenges that shaped Troy's life. He lost his father at 14 and undiagnosed dyslexia adversely affected his grades and his sense of worth. Troy began drinking in middle school. He says he was drunk all the way through his two TV series, Surfside 6 and Hawaiian Eye and unable to master new lines because of his learning disability and his inebriation. By the time he made Paul Springs Weekend, he was downing three codeine laced aspirins with a pint of vodka, followed by four lines of cocaine just to get himself up and out the door. This regimen was quickly followed by a career on the skids, financial ruin and four failed marriages. Troy's charm, humor, wisdom and gratitude pulled him through recovery and bonded him for life with ex-wives, girlfriends and screen partners, Suzanne Pleshette, Sandra Dee, Connie Stevens, Diane McBain and Angie Dickinson. We also learn from Michael about his other books, including a brand new one on Mae West's nightclub act. Sample roasting empowers people with the knowledge of possibility locked in the coffee. Bringing sample roasting that provides for more continuity and better communication to more professionals in the value chain, especially at origin, is critical not just for how coffee's potential is achieved but how the value of that coffee is distributed. Today we explore this dynamic through the lens of the IKAWA sample roaster with Inventor, Andrew Stordy! Andrew, the inventor and founder of IKAWA, grew up in coffee growing countries including Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Burundi.Andrew is an engineer and industrial designer and developed the concept for IKAWA while studying Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art in London. He's dedicated years of toil to making IKAWA a reality. In this conversation we discuss the start of the company, how and why the roaster was developed, the impact it has had, and the design/iteration process that they utilize at IWAWA that helps them continue to innovate. Henry Wilson's experience as a workingman would have a double benefit in his political career. Not only could he identify with average people, but he could demonstrate that unlike his slaveholding oppponents, he worked his way up in a country that allowed him to do so. His very presence from actual rags to some riches (at least for a time) compelled Republicans to place him on the ticket with Grant as his second vice-president. Not a bad run for man who had to flee from a poor family and change his name. We tell his story.

On June 22nd 1922, the British Field Marshall, Henry Wilson was shot dead in London. The assassination sparked a major political crisis in Ireland. The British government blamed the killing on a faction of the IRA opposed to the recent Anglo-Irish Treaty. When they demanded action be taken against them, Michael Collins oversaw an attack on an IRA unit occupying the Four Courts in Dublin. This sparked the Irish Civil War.Over the last century the incident has been shrouded in controversy. Many at the time and since have accused Michael Collins himself of ordering the attack on Wilson. In this episode I am joined by John Dorney to discuss the assassination of Henry Wilson, the fallout and who was responsible. My exclusive supporters' series on the Irish Civil War with Dr Brian Hanley of Trinity College Dublin continued this week on Acast+ and Patreon. Ep #1 explains backdrop to the war, while Ep #2 profiles Michael Collins, his involvement in the war and his death in August 1922.My guest on this week's show is John Dorney. Specialty coffee has its fair share of challenges across the supply chain. Solutions for those challenges are only as good as how they were created, namely, whether they were created collaboratively and with deference to those most impacted. In short, when we connect with each other in shared work toward common goals, we see progress. Today we will be talking with someone whose work in telling the important stories of coffee and producing events for connection is making a big impact. I am so pleased to welcome Henry Wilson to the show! Henry Wilson is the founder of the popular coffee news organization, Perfect Daily Grind as well as the founder of The Producer Roaster Forum. What started as a fascination for the stories of coffee, turned into a much larger enterprise which focuses on connection and bringing the best information and diverse perspectives to bear on the challenges that face our growing industry. In this conversation with Henry we talk about his road to establishing these platforms and especially focus on the importance of collaboration, connection, and relationship through the Producer Roaster Forum and what we can apply from its example in our own efforts to connect and create a better future. Happy Thanksgiving! Today is Thanksgiving Day and many families will be gathered together to share thoughts on gratitude. Can you name at least seven things for which you are grateful? Do you believe in "Thank You" power in your life? The latest research on the impact of positive emotions in our lives is very interesting. The influence of gratitude is quantifiable, both physically and emotionally. Simply being thankful and making it a point to recognize those good things will positively change our lives. There is scientific proof that we will be happier, healthier, and better able to handle the stresses of daily life simply by saying, "thank you." Warm thoughts on gratitude to always remember: 1. There are many powerful reasons for living in gratitude. 2. Gratitude is an unstoppable mindset for success and happiness. 3. The scientific studies are interesting, well documented, and very persuasive. 4. Living in gratitude opens your mind to being more creative when faced with challenges. 5. Grateful people focus more on the positive events from the past and do not waste time dwelling on the negatives. 6. Grateful people are more popular because they are a pleasure to be around. 7. We all respond positively to praise and encouragement. I have been touched by the stories of people who have faced physical and emotional trauma and yet have found the strength to live in gratitude. The people who practice the power of "thank you" were able to turn a trauma into a positive not only for themselves, but for others as well. Always remember - we will be happier, healthier, and better able to handle the stresses of daily life simply by saying, "thank you." More Warm Thoughts: "I thank God that I live in a country where dreams can come true. Where failure sometimes is the first step to success and where success is only another form of failure, if we forget what our priorities should be." Harry Lloyd Hopkins - Advisor to Franklin D. Roosevelt. "Remember ever and always that your country was founded by the stern, old Puritans who made the deck of the Mayflower an altar of the living God, and whose first act on touching the soil of the New World was to offer on bended knees thanksgiving to Almighty God." Henry Wilson - 18th US Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant. And may God bless America and our world! Taispeántas faoin gCogadh Cathartha sna Ceithre Cúirteanna. On June 28, 1922, the Civil War broke out when the IRA's anti - treaty forces were attacked by temporary government forces. Ar an 28 Meitheamh 1922, cuireadh tús leis an gCogadh Cathartha nuair a rinne fórsaí an rialtais shealadaigh ionsaí ar fhórsaí frithchonartha an IRA. The anti-contract forces had been stationed in the Four Courts in Dublin since the previous April and had control of the place. Bhí na fórsaí frithchonartha curtha fúthu sna Ceithre Cúirteanna i mBaile Átha Cliath ón Aibreán roimhe sin agus smacht acu ar an áit. An exhibition with a digital app was launched in the Four Courts today to commemorate that fateful battle. Seoladh taispeántas a bhfuil aip dhigiteach ag dul leis sna Ceithre Cúirteanna inniu chun comóradh a dhéanamh ar an gcath cinniúnach úd. Dublin-based historian Lorcan Collins is best known for setting up The 1916 Walking Rebellion Tour, and says it is impossible to say whether it was right: "Michael Collins only had six weeks to negotiate with Lloyd George, who was British Prime Minister at the time. Tá cáil ar an staraí Lorcan Collins i mBaile Átha Cliath faoin turas treoraithe The 1916 Walking Rebellion Tour a bhunú, agus dar leis nach féidir a mhaíomh cé acu an raibh an ceart: "Ní raibh ach sé seachtaine ag Michael Collins chun idirbheartaíocht a dhéanamh le Lloyd George, a bhí mar Phríomh-Aire na Breataine ag an am. He was under terrible pressure. Bhí brú uafásach air. "When you think about it, they had six years to negotiate Britain's exit from the European Union, and yet, they made a mess of it. "Nuair a smaoiníonn tú air, bhí sé bliana acu chun idirbheartaíocht a dhéanamh ar imeacht na Breataine as an Aontas Eorpach, agus fós féin, rinne siad praiseach de. “When Henry Wilson was killed in London,” said Lorcan Collins, “that angered Lloyd George and Churchill and it was believed that Michael Collins had given the order to kill Wilson. "Nuair a maraíodh Henry Wilson i Londain," a dúirt Lorcan Collins, "chuir sin fearg ar Lloyd George agus Churchill agus bhíothas den tuairim gurbh é Michael Collins a thug an t-ordú chun Wilson a mharú. "So Britain ordered the provisional government in Ireland to abolish the IRA in the Four Courts." "Mar sin, thug an Bhreatain ordú don rialtas sealadach in Éirinn lucht an IRA sna Ceithre Cúirteanna a dhíothú." On 28 June 1922, the Four Courts were attacked and the battle lasted for 60 hours until the IRA surrendered. Ar 28 Meitheamh 1922, rinneadh ionsaí ar na Ceithre Cúirteanna agus mhair an cath go ceann 60 uair an chloig go dtí gur ghéill an an tIRA. Although not many people were injured during the conflict, the Public Records Office was destroyed. Cé nár gortaíodh mórán daoine le linn na caismirte, scriosadh Oifig na dTaifead Poiblí. "Thousands were killed during the Civil War," said Professor Paul Rouse of the School of History at University College Dublin, "and it has fostered a great division among the people that is still to be found in the political life of the country." "Maraíodh na mílte i rith an Chogaidh Chathartha," a dúirt an tOllamh Paul Rouse ón Scoil Staire sa Choláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath, "agus chothaigh sé deighilt mhór i measc an phobail atá fós le brath ar shaol polaitiúil na tíre." Guided tours of the Four Courts are available as part of the exhibition. Tá turais treoraithe timpeall na gCeithre Cúirteanna ar fáil mar chuid den taispeántas. They can be booked online in advance. Is féidir iad a chur in áirithe ar líne roimh ré. A tour in Irish will take place tomorrow evening at 1:30. Beidh turas i Gaeilge ar siúl tráthnóna amárach ag 1:30. In todays episode we discuss some of the major figures and perspectives representing the anti-slavery movement at the time. We cover Wilsons first days in the Senate and the infamous Brooks-Summner incident and Henry Wilson's actions launching him to be hailed as an icon of the North and an enemy of the South.
On 22 June 1922 Field Marshall Sir Henry Wilson, former Chief of the Imperial General Staff, and Unionist MP for North Down, was assassinated outside his London home in Eaton Square. The anti-Treaty IRA were blamed and six days later, under pressure from the British, Michael Collins ordered the bombardment of the Four Courts, the opening salvos of the Irish Civil War. But who was Henry Wilson? Was he, as was alleged, the mastermind behind the anti-Catholic pogroms in Belfast 1920-22? And who ordered the hit? To address these and other questions listen to History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, in discussion with John Dorney, Caoimhe Nic Dhaibhéid, Padraig Óg Ó Ruairc, John Regan. Almost exactly a century ago, on 22 June 1922, a series of gunshots rang out in Belgravia, London. Out of this polite neighbourhood, home to powerful politicians and wealthy financiers, a shocking news story quickly spread. Field Marshall Sir Henry Wilson, MP, one of the great heroes of the Great War had been assassinated. Who was responsible, why it mattered, and what happened next is the subject of an incisive, absorbing new book called Great Hatred, by the Irish Times journalist Ronan McGreevy. As McGreevy explains in this episode of Travels Through Time, the bullets that were fired that day in Belgravia did not just cause one death. They led very soon afterwards to an equally significant other. Ronan McGreevy's Great Hatred: the Assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, MP, is newly issued in hardback by Faber. Brandishing perhaps the greatest handle in photography history, Dylan sits down with Tomoko Inoue, perhaps better known by her moniker, The Tinfoil Biter, to delve into her history as a concert photographer. A chance opportunity to photograph Down while in Japan opened the gate and her dynamic shots have highlighted the already heavy presence of such artists as Crowbar, High on Fire, Child Bite, Weedeater, and Osees. We go through some select sets of her photos while also touching on the highs and lows of living in Michigan in the 90s, how drawing lead her to photography, the dreaded purple light, knowing when to put the camera down, and randomly becoming acquainted with Henry Wilson from Floor*. You can check out more of Tomoko's photography over at her website. *NOTE: There was a slip of the tongue and we meant to say Henry WILSON of Floor. Galileo believed that the book of nature was "written in the language of mathematics." He recognized the complexity and the simplicity of that language when he wrote, The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do. 1803 Birth of Karl Friedrich Schimper, German botanist and poet. He was born into a family of scientists. His mother was a botanist. At university, he befriended botanists, Alexander Braun and Louis Agassiz. Karl made several keen scientific observations. He proved the association between the golden angle and the Fibonacci numbers. Karl also devised a theory of phyllotaxy which explained the serial addition of new leaves on a stem appearing in a spiral. And after studying mountain landscapes, he began questioning how enormous rocks came to be positioned on the foothills of the Alps. Realizing the many-ton slabs could have only been moved by ice, he began devising a theory of an ice age - something he called an eiszeit. Karl was a poet at heart, and he revealed his theory in a light-hearted 22-stanza poem - an Ode to the Iceage to honor Galileo on their shared birthday. One verse says, Ice of the Past! Of an Age when frost In its stern clasp held the lands of the South Dressed with its mantle of desolate white Mountains and forests, fair valleys and lakes! In his book Humans: from the beginning, Christopher Seddon acknowledged Karl's discovery. He wrote: 2,588 million years ago... the Earth entered an Ice Age. Cooler, arid conditions alternated with warm, wet conditions as ice sheets ebbed and flowed in higher latitudes... This alternation between a cooler and a warmer climate has continued right up to the present day... In fact the warm spells – interglacial periods – are no more than breaks in an on-going ice age... The term Eiszeit (‘ice age') was coined in 1837 by the German botanist Karl Friedrich Schimper. 1876 Birth of Ernest Henry Wilson (books by this author), English plant collector and explorer. He introduced over 2000 plant species from Asia to the West. Of the regal lily, he wrote, Tis God's present to our gardens... Anybody might have found it, but — His whisper came to me. On his first trip to China, Ernest located the lost Dove tree, Also known as the Handkerchief Tree. He brought the tree to England in 1899. Ernest found the yellow Chinese poppy, the Regal lily, rhododendrons, roses, and primulas on his second trip. During that second trip, Ernest's leg was crushed in a landslide. His leg was splinted with his camera tripod. But before Ernest could be moved, a mule caravan came upon Ernest and his party. Ernest was forced to lie down on the narrow trail and let some 40-50 mules step over him on their way across the mountain. Ernest himself marveled at this experience, and he later said, The sure-footedness of the mule is well-known, and I realized it with gratitude as these animals one by one passed over me - and not even one frayed my clothing. A year later, Ernest could walk without crutches, but not with a limp - something he called his lily limp. He once reflected, The regal lily was worth it and more. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Sanctified Landscape by David Schuyler This book came out ten years ago in 2012, and the subtitle is Writers, Artists, and the Hudson River Valley, 1820–1909. David's book, the Sanctified Landscape, is about the first iconic American landscape: the Hudson River Valley. The title references a passage written by landscape painter Thomas Cole. In the early 1800s, the picturesque Hudson was home to writers and artists like Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, and Thomas Cole. As far as the artistic community was concerned, there was no better place on earth. But the landscape was not immune to the changes happening in the country at large. The artist community in the Hudson Valley were among America's earliest conservationists and did their best to protect their slice of Eden. The Catskill and Hudson Valley remain a beloved areas of the country. David's book adds context and images that provide a deeper appreciation for the beauty and inspiration found in this Sanctified Landscape. In the Spring of 2022, Henry Wilson & The Civil War will explore the life of Henry Wilson through key events in the Civil War with input from historians and authors. Born into abject poverty, Henry Wilson, the little known Radical Republican senator of Massachusetts and later Vice President, played an enormous role in shaping America during and after the war, serving as the Chair of the Senate Military Committee. Not only was Wilson's service as a politician dynamic and nuanced, he lived a unique life working as a farmer, cobbler, journalist, teacher, and general. In today's episode I talk about the difference between distributed versus centralized cloud storage with Henry Wilson, an avid community supporter of a forward thinking company disrupting the cloud storage industry called ScPrime. Most companies use Amazon AWS, or other cloud storage companies to store their massive amounts of data. But it comes at a price, both in their wallet, and their security. We talk about how distributed storage is much more reasonably priced, and a lot safer from hackers. We also touch base on ScPrime's new XaMiner host computer that jumps into the gig economy just like Uber and AirBnB did. QUB Talks 100 – The Partition of Ireland: Causes and Consequences
Contributor: Professor Fearghal McGarry Talk Title: The Killing of Sir Henry Wilson: An Irish Tragedy Talk Synopsis: This talk explores the circumstances and impact of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson's murder on the doorstep of his Belgravia home in June, 1922. It describes his role in the politics of this period, including as chief security advisor to the new Northern Ireland government, and how his killers (two London-born republicans) had served in the British army during WW1. It suggests that the story of Sir Henry Wilson and his killers, including their views and sense of identity, illustrates the complex and interconnected nature of relationships ‘within and between' Ireland and Britain – many of which are played out in people's individual lives/family circumstances. And it concludes by suggesting that ‘an ethical remembering of this difficult history' might usefully foreground ‘its complexities and contradictions and the cost of violence for those left behind… not least the narrowing of identities… which continues to challenge reconciliation in Ireland.' Important Events February 15, 1842 Today is the anniversary of the death of the Scottish surgeon, botanist, and naturalist Archibald Menzies. The famous story about Archibald goes something like this: Once, Joseph Banks sent Archibald on an expedition. At some point, Archibald ended up warmly received in Chile, where he dined with the country’s leadership. During the meal, Archibald was served nuts from the Chile Pinetree to eat as part of the dessert. Archibald ate a few of the nuts, but then he managed to put a handful in his pocket after he recognized that the nuts were actually large seeds. On the trip back to England, Archibald could not wait and he started growing the five precious Chilean pinetree seeds and he managed to get them to grow successfully. Back in England, the evergreen Chili Pine Trees were blessed with a new common name - the Monkey Puzzle tree - after someone remarked that even a monkey would not be able to climb the tree. And Archibald’s unique introduction earned him the moniker “Monkey Puzzle Man.” Sadly, Monkey Puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana "arr-oh-KAR-ee-ah arr-oh-KAN-ah") are considered endangered today. But, like Archibald, gardeners still attempt to grow these curious trees from seed. February 15, 1876 Today is the birthday of the prolific English plant collector, gardener, botanist, and explorer Ernest Henry Wilson. When the botanist Augustine Henry met with a 22-year-old Ernest Henry Wilson, he wrote to his friend, Evelyn Gleesen, to share his impressions of Ernest after their first visit together: “He is a self-made man, knows botany thoroughly, is young, and will get on.” Henry also shared with Evelyn that he, "would be glad if [Wilson] will continue to carry on the work in China which has been on my shoulders for some years. There is so much of interest and novelty." Later the same day, Henry also reported back to Kew about helping Ernest with his quest: “.... [I wrote] on a half-page of a notebook ... a sketch of a tract of country about the size of New York State [on which I marked the place where I had found the single tree of Davidia involucrata (the Dove Tree or Handkerchief Tree) in 1888. I also provided Wilson with useful information and hints.]" Henry and Ernest stayed close and corresponded for the rest of their lives. Henry returned to his native Ireland, and Ernest went on to find the Dove tree. Also known as the Handkerchief Tree, Ernest brought the Dove tree to England in 1899, and it would become his most famous tree introduction. Without a doubt, Ernest’s first trip to China was a resounding success. Ernest returned to England and provided his sponsor, the nurseryman Harry James Veitch, with seeds for over 300 species in addition to 35 very full Wardian cases. Before he left for his second trip to China, Ernest married Hellen Ganderton. And within six months, Ernest was headed back to China with another singular mission: the yellow Chinese poppy (Meconopsis integrifolia) and it's commonly known as the Lampshade Poppy. Not only did Ernest find the yellow Chinese poppy, but he also found the Regal lily, rhododendrons, roses, and primulas. During that second trip, Ernest’s leg was crushed in a landslide. As incredible as it sounds, Ernest’s leg was splinted with the legs of his camera tripod - but the story doesn’t end there. The place where the rockslide occurred was on a very narrow trail - they had been walking single file along the mountainside. Before Ernest could be moved, a mule caravan came upon Ernest and his party. So, Ernest did the only thing he could - he laid down on the trail and let the 40-50 mules step over him on their way across the mountain. I always imagine the surreal experience Ernest had there - laying there in great pain and watching the bellies and hooves and whatever else of the mules passing over him for what must have seemed an eternity. Ernest himself marveled at this experience, and he later said, "The sure-footedness of the mule is well-known, and I realized it with gratitude as these animals one by one passed over me - and not even one frayed my clothing." After this trauma, it took Ernest a full year to walk without crutches. And forever after, Ernest walked with what he called his “lily limp.” Incredibly, when Ernest was asked about the damage to his leg, he simply said, “The price I paid has been stated… The regal lily was worth it and more." After all of his daring experiences and bravery, it was a car crash that ultimately claimed the life of Ernest and his wife. They were driving their roadster on wet roads when their car swerved on a “carpet of leaves” and went over an embankment before plunging 40 feet onto a field - landing on the back bumper with the front wheels in the air. Ernest and Helen died within an hour of the accident. Their little Boston terrier, however, somehow managed to survive. At the time of the accident, Ernest had been working stateside as the Arnold Arboretum’s keeper in Boston. The death of Ernest and Ellen shocked the botanical community and the country. Ernest and Ellen were survived by their daughter — a girl they had adopted and named Muriel Primrose. She was honored with the naming of a bamboo - Fargesia murielae ("Farj-eez-ee-ah Muriel-ee") commonly known as Umbrella Bamboo. Unearthed Words Information is so tantalizingly scanty about the expedition in 1927 for gardener-botanists so distinguished that one expects all the flowers of South Africa to have bowed down to them as they passed. Three of the four appear elsewhere in this book - Collingwood Ingram, George Taylor, and Lawrence Johnstone of Hidcote. The 4th, Reginald Cory, how to find Garden at Dyffryn near Cardiff, and is gratefully remembered for the bequest of his considerable Fortune to Cambridge University for the benefit of the botanic garden, and up his magnificent Botanical and Horticultural library to The Royal Horticultural Society. — Alice Coats, English gardener and author, The Plant Hunters, Africa Grow That Garden Library Dried Flowers by Morgane Illes This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Techniques and Ideas for the Modern Home. In this book, Morgane updates our preconceived notions regarding dried flowers. If dried flowers aren’t intriguing to you or if you feel that they belong in your 3rd-great grandmother’s steamer trunk along with vintage lace - get ready to be inspired. Morgane brings preserved florals out of the past and into the modern home. Selected for their color, texture, and architectural interest, Morgane's top 30 picks for blooms continue to look incredible after being preserved through drying or pressing. In addition, Morgane showcases fifteen projects that feature dried flowers — from wreaths and wall art, to terrariums and flower crowns. This book is 144 pages of preserved blooms that will enhance your home with everlasting beauty. David shared his advice at the 1992 Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle. “In many instances, the city yard can be used as an outside room. You can extend the space inside the house out into the garden and make the two work as a single unit. It is important, especially for North Americans with large, open backyards, to break down the garden space into a series of smaller rooms. One of the great tricks of landscape design is to create a sense of mystery and surprise as you move from one space into another. If you see everything at once, it becomes uninteresting. But if you break the space down into individual rooms, it becomes inherently more interesting. [England has] some remarkable gardens, but the average backyard is a lot more mundane than most people imagine. We're a nation of plant-lovers, but we're certainly not a nation of garden designers. A lot of our gardens are too busy and overcomplicated.” Next, David offered the following tips for people thinking of making a garden: “Don't let your garden end up a muddle of hard and soft landscaping. Take time to draw up a plan. "Most people tend to rush off to the garden center the first fine day, stick everything in the trunk, and then wonder where to plant it all.” Before planting anything, put in all the hard landscaping, all the decking, walling, paving, the bones, and composition of the gardening. Plants will bring the garden to life, softening the hard surfaces. Keep the design and planting simple. Many gardens suffer from over-complication and gimmicks. Be careful not to use conflicting materials that can be "restless on the eye and hard on the pocket." Resist the temptation to plant too many different things. The well-planted border has a limited number of species that relate well to one another. "There are many foliage textures, colors, and shapes that give you interest throughout the year." You have to think about foliage and texture as well as flower." Remember what Gertrude Jekyll, the famous Edwardian garden designer, taught: hot colors (reds, yellows) foreshorten the space through their vibrancy. "If you put a pot of bright red flowers at the bottom of the garden, your eye will go straight to it. Use hot colors close to the viewpoint and cooler colors farther away. It gives a nice feeling of space, and small gardens can be made to feel larger." Do your homework before planting. Find out if a plant likes sun or shade and how big it will grow. "I'm a great believer in growing what does well in my climate. I won't plant things that are going to look unhappy. I'd much sooner have something that thrives than something that's good for a couple of seasons and then gets knocked off by bad weather." Don't bite off more than you can chew in one season. Take a few years to build your garden.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

In this episode, Ryan sits down with Henry Wilson, CEO and founder of the world's leading coffee media platform -- Perfect Daily Grind (PDG). Henry walks us through his journey on coffee farms in Central America. He realized there was a lack of communication in the chain of supply for the world of coffee. His solution? Perfect Daily Grind (PDG). Perfect Daily Grind bridges the gap of information that was lacking between coffee farmers, distributors, consumers, and everyone in between. His company became, as he discusses in the interview, "the voice for the whole coffee industry." As you'll learn through Henry's interview, this passion wasn't purely about coffee, it was about the people. Henry created a way to unite all the players who are involved in coffee's process. Have you checked out Ryan Murphy's Hollywood yet on Netflix? We talked about it in our last episode and made special mention of Jim Parsons' stand out performance as lecherous agent/manager, Henry Willson. If you are as curious about the true story of Henry Willson as we were, here's a Shorty where we give you the backstory you didn't see in the limited series! In the series, Willson tells the story of his lost love, actor Junior Durkin. We'd never heard of Durkin, but then, by chance, we were browsing the Criterion Channel (also available on Prime) this week and found a movie called Hell's House. Durkin was third billing to Bette Davis and Pat O'Brien, but he was really the star of the film, and had he had a longer career might have done more of these kids gone wrong movies ala' The Dead End Kids. Durkin did 10 movies between 1930 and 1934. In two, he was credited as Bernard Durkin. In Hell's House, he was credited as Junior Dirken, and by 1934 he was credited in two films as "Trent" Durkin. We don't know, but it seems like a good bet that the change to "Trent" came from the mind of Henry Wilson, who named his stable of actors names like Rock, Troy, Yale, and Tab. Durkin sadly died in a car crash in 1934. He was only 19 years old. If Durkin's death was the catalyst that led to the bitter, drunken trajectory of Willson's life, we'll never know, but we're glad to add Durkin to our gallery of actors you should know. Don't have Criterion Channel or Prime Video? Watch to Hell's House below. (full movie) on our website.

He’s played drums in several heavy bands, including In the Company of Serpents and Former Worlds. He’s currently the drummer of Drainage, a sludgy metalcore band from Long Beach, California. Henry Wilson is an all-around musician from Tampa, Florida. He's the drummer of sludge-pop legends Floor, and he's the mastermind of Dove and House of Lightning, performing vocals and guitar in both bands. He's one of those rare musicians who has a defined style on multiple instruments, and he's played an integral role in defining sludge metal as its own branch of heavy music. With Dove and House of Lightning, Wilson goes beyond sludge to include elements of hardcore, thrash, and straight up '80s metal, mixing it all into music that's catchy, unique, and crushing in equal parts.

Henry Wilson is the founder of Perfect Daily Grind, a cross-platform, global network which distributes coffee content to a worldwide audience. It's the go-to source for specialty coffee news internationally. Henry has spent extensive time in Latin America, taking the time to get to know producers on a personal level. Though this time spent learning first-hand in coffee communities, he's developed a strong understanding of the real challenges that producers and communities that rely on coffee cultivation face. He took time from the SCA show to sit down and have a chat with me about the industry and what PDG is doing within it through education and engagement. Direct Trade is a phrase tossed around in the Specialty Coffee sector. The line between what is and what isn't direct trade is so blurry, we are tempted to lump just about anything under the label. We have discussed it on the show before, but we shed new light on the topic with a guest who helps us see the big picture, and, maybe clearer than we have before.References:Stories Behind the Grind (Aidan Vuocolo)How Perfect Grind Daily CEO, Henry Wilson, Grew To Be The World’s Leading Coffee PublicationThe Hospopreneurs Podcast (The Hospopreneurs Team)The Perfect Daily Grind with Henry WilsonPerfect Daily Grind (Perfect Daily Grind Team)Perfect Daily GrindInstagram (Perfect Daily Grind Team)Perfect Daily Grind InstagramReach us at TheCoffeePodcast.orgInstagram @TheCoffeePodcast
I talked to Rock Hudson Biographer Mark Griffin about his new book All That Heaven Allows: Rock Hudson A Biography. His book takes us through Rocks childhood, his struggling days in L.A. to him meeting Henry Wilson, agent to a stable of pretty boys. He took on Rock and eventually, after roles as Indians and small parts Rock achieved superstardom from the Douglas Sirk film Magnificent Obsession. Rock was reunited with Jane Wyman in one of my fave Rock movies, All That Heaven Allows. Who could pass up the deliciously nasty Mona Plasch..We talk about Rocks personal life being in the closet. Confidential magazine was going to out Rock as gay so allegedly Henry Wilson gave them Rory Calhoun was a jailbird..I couldn't imagine they'd trade for that. It looks like Henry Wilson threw Tab Hunter under the bus in an article about a boys PJ party raided by the police. As Rock was nearing 30 the rags would wonder if Rock would finally settle down, or was something wrong with him. At thirty Henry Wilson arranged dating and a marriage between Rock and Henrys secretary Phyllis Gates. Phyllis claimed she had NO IDEA Rock was gay. You will find out more that Phyllis did. Matt talked all Rocks best movies, Rocks loves and how horrible it must have been for Rock to lead a double life. He had to be very trusting and careful that none of his past loves had compromising pictures or letters from him. I can't imagine what that did to him emotionally and physically. We wind our way down to Rocks TV career to Rock finding out he had the Aids virus. He had a blotch on his neck and was actually diagnosed by his dermatologist. We talk the famous Linda Evans, Rock kiss and Rocks final days. Rock was the first famous person to put a face to AIDS . Especially such a beloved one. This is broken into three parts. Matt is fabulous and my heart went out to Rock. I'm not the only person to think the book was wonderful. Universal, Rocks old studio optioned the book to be a major motion picture. Thanks so much to Mark for being such a great guest. I learned so much more then I ever knew about Rock. He meticulously wrote this book. Lots of great contacts. It took him four years. On this episode of the Freecast, there are more breweries blossoming on Portsmouth's West end. We've got Granite State Progress trying to suspend instead of befriending the FSP. There's Joel acting as Dash's MC and blockchain governance as a philosophy. With the history of Henry Wilson, New Hampshire's only native born VP. Next on the Freecast. News New Brewery coming to Portsmouth's West End Loaded Question Current Bartender at Earth Eagle Brewings, Tom Bath, which he hopes will be open for business in December. This will be the West End's third brewery opening in a year. (Liar's Bench & Great Rhythm being the others) Bath says the space reminds him of a speakeasy. “Loaded Question was conceived on the idea that great beer mimics life. Our favorite beer changes with the season, the time of day, the weather and the crew we are hanging with. When the color, flavor, body and aroma of the beer match the moment it enriches the experience. Loaded Question is dedicated to understanding the infinite possibilities of craft beer and making memorable moments with our fellow beer lover.” Speaking of West End, State Street Saloon is looking to rebuild in the West End Recently Burned down State Street Saloon is planning to rebuild just not in their previous spot. A quick look at freestateproject.org says the FSP is really about: “The Free State Project is an effort to recruit 20,000 liberty-loving people to move to New Hampshire. We are looking for neighborly, productive, tolerant folks from any and all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, and colors, who agree to the political philosophy expressed in our Statement of Intent, that government exists at most to protect people's rights, and should neither provide for people nor punish them for activities that interfere with no one else.” The Rockingham County Democrats are sponsoring a talk by Zandra Rice Hawkins, executive director of Granite State Progress. “Exposing the Free State Project,” Wednesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at the Exeter Inn, 90 Front St. Granite State Progress is a progressive advocacy organization that addresses issues of immediate state and local concern. If you're heading up to the white mountains to camp, you better not have firewood that's from Rockingham, Belknap, Hillsborough or Merrimack county. Seacoast History Henry Wilson Most people remember Franklin Pierce, the only president from NH. Not many remember vice presidents. Wilson born in Farmington, NH in 1812. Wilson was the only VP born in NH. His birth name was Jeremiah Jones Colbath, his father apparently gave him that name because Jeremiah Jones was a wealthy neighbor of his and was a childless bachelor and hoped that he would bequeath his wealth to Wilson when he died… he didn't. Grew up poor, so poor in fact that Wilson was indentured to a neighboring farmer when he was 10 years old! He worked with the farmer for 10 years! At the end he received 6 sheep and 2 oxen which he sold for $85 Wilson didn't like his birth name and petitioned the NH general court to legally change it to Henry Wilson when he was 21. According to his brother he changed it to Henry Wilson because he read a biography about a teacher in Philadelphia with that name. The same year he changed his name 1833, Wilson moved to Natick Ma because he was trying to find work. Wilson WALKED there from Farmington. Google maps says that is a 30 hr walk and is 89.8 miles present day. It was probably more then. Wilson got a job making shoes. After learning the trade within a few weeks he bought out his contract for $15 and opened his own shop. He was very successful very quickly, saving hundreds of dollars in a relatively short amount of time. There was a legend saying that he once attempted to make 100 shoes without sleeping but fell asleep with the 100th pair of shoes in his hand. Later in his political years his nickname was “The Natick Cobbler” Working so hard deteriorated his health and so he went to Virginia to recuperate. On a stop in Washington D.C he heard congressional debates on slavery and abolitionism and saw black families being separated from each other while being bought and sold.. Personally this and being indentured himself as a child shaped his political leanings later on He went to Strafford, Wolfeboro and Concord NH academies to further his education. Wilson founded a shoe manufacturing company that employed over 100 people with only a $12 investment to start Around 1840 Wilson became politically active as a Whig. Member of Mass state senate 1844-1846 and 1850-52, in his latter term he was the senate president. In 1845 Wilson and fellow whig John Greenleaf Whittier submitted a petition to congress to not annex Texas as it would expand slavery. Wilson was a delegate in 1848 for the Whigs but left the party after it nominated slaveholder Zachary Taylor for president. He collaborated with other anti slavery people from democrats, know nothing, free soilers and other anti-slavery whigs. He joined the Free soil party and was elected to the US senate in 1855 for Massachusetts by a coalition of free soilers, know nothings and anti-slavery democrats. Once in the Senate he was very polarizing. At the height of antebellum tension he got challenged to a duel TWICE! By SC representative Preston Brooks because Brooks had punched and knocked out Senator Charles Sumner and Wilson said Brooks was "brutal, murderous, and cowardly" and California Senator William Gwin who Wilson had made a speech saying Gwin and the California government were corrupt. No dual ever happened though As soon as the congressional session ended in the summer of 1861, Wilson went back to Massachusetts and recruited and equipped 2,300 men to fight in the not-so Civil War And commanded the 22nd Massachusetts regiment from late September to late October. Funny Story: In July 1861 Wilson was present at the first battle of Bull Run, just outside of DC. There were many Senators, representatives, reporters and other elites there. They assumed a quick Union victory. Wilson rode out in a carriage with a picnic hamper of sandwiches to feed the troops. However the confederates routed the Union troops and Wilson was almost captured by the confederates while his carriage was crushed. He had to walk all the way back to Washington by foot. In December 1861 Wilson introduced a bill to abolish slavery in DC. Signed into law in April 1862. Throughout the war he introduced several other abolishment bills that were signed into law. In 1872, Wilson became the VP running mate for incumbent Ulysses Grant's presidential campaign. Wilson supported black civil rights(yay), voting rights for women(yay), federal education aid(boo), regulation of businesses(boo), and prohibition of liquor(boo). They ran on the working man's candidate. Grant and Wilson were elected but Wilson was involved in the credit mobilier scandal which Wilson admitted to. He accepted $2,000 from Union Pacific railroad to support legislation for the trans pacific railroad. In May 1873, 2 months into his vice presidency he suffered a stroke and was in poor health until he died 2 years later from another stroke on November 22nd 1875 in the Capitol building.
