A new MP3 sermon from Hebron Free Presbyterian Church is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Labouring for the Well Done Speaker: Rev. David Park Broadcaster: Hebron Free Presbyterian Church Event: Prayer Meeting Date: 8/7/2025 Length: 49 min.
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:12-13). This is a text I cherish. For three reasons. One, it does not place responsibility for the spiritual growth of the congregation on the pastor. Certainly, pastors have a responsibility, but it is not primary, it is not even secondary. At best our responsibility is tertiary. This helps me sleep. Two, and more to the point, it gives us pastors permission to nudge and encourage the people under our spiritual care to get busy. Salvation is not just something received. It is received, of course, but it is also worked out. It is a matter of obedience to work out the consequences of salvation in our individual and communal lives. Christians must exert themselves, put effort in. Paul has in mind continuous, sustained, and strenuous effort. The kind of workout where the muscles get tired and want to quit, but one pushes through the pain to increase muscle strength and endurance. As Christians, people redeemed in Christ, we are to walk in step with the Spirit as the Spirit grows his fruit in us. Or to use the words of this chapter, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (2:3,4). The grace of God does more than get us into heaven. It also teaches us to say no to ungodly activity and to live righteous lives (Titus 2:11-12). But this is not easily done. Sometimes it appears that Christians reduce the godly life to the gathering of correct information. The most exertion required is that which gets us out of bed and to church on Sunday morning. If we have a preacher that preaches the truth, all will be well. Truth is important, but it is insufficient. If we do not apply that truth in our lives, we remain disobedient. We must allow the Spirit to identity patterns of sinfulness in our lives and to use various means to root them out. In classic Christian literature, we face three strong and wily enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil. Paul calls us to make full use of every God-appointed means to defeat the evil so that the good has room to grow. Spiritual disciplines are not simply to gain knowledge or ‘do time'. Such discipline should always be about this: working out our salvation. We pastors are sometimes invited to walk alongside people as they work this out. It is a tremendous privilege and often full of joy. However, at times it can be discouraging. Progress is slow. First gear is a frustratingly sluggish pace. Sometimes, we witness people stuck in reverse. At those times, it is important to remember that these verses place no responsibility on pastors or others who walk alongside. Rather, it says, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose”. That, my friends, is good news indeed and the third reason I cherish this text. We are not on our own against our formidable enemies. God himself is at work. The God who exalted Jesus from death to the highest place is himself at work in you and me labouring out our salvation. We work with fear and trembling, not in despair, but in hope, in expectation, in certainty that progress is being made. The Holy Spirit is the chief teacher and worker after all. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing; at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Are you weary and tired? Feeling burdened? Labouring under a heavy load? This week we see from Matthew 11:20-30 how Jesus, the Gentle King who truly reveals the Father, pronounces judgment on those who reject Him but gives real rest to those who come to Him.
Welcome to The Refinery. The Inward Attitudes of a True Disciple is our theme for the next few Sunday mornings. This series is based on the Beatitudes, found in the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes vividly set forth the inward spiritual characteristics of those who are ideal citizens of the kingdom of God. Only when we are right in our inward attitudes can we be right in our outward conduct. Today we are discussing, The Forgotten Beatitude. We have probably all heard a sermon on the Beatitudes, in fact I generally preach a series on the Beatitudes each year. Did you know there is a Beatitude that Paul preserved for us for later? Ask almost any Christian, even the most careful Bible student, to name the beatitudes of Jesus, and they will name those listed in Matthew 5. Not one in a hundred would name the one given in Acts 20. Thus it is fair to call Acts 20:35 the forgotten Beatitude. Acts 20:35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.' ” There is no question as to the authenticity of this beatitude. That this is a genuine saying of Jesus there is no doubt. Beyond doubt, this was a current saying of Jesus with which the Ephesian elders were familiar. Moreover, the writer, Luke, who heard Paul's address to these pastors and preserved it. Also wrote the gospel that bears his name, and his gospel preserves, in slightly varied form, Jesus' beatitudes. There can be no doubt that Jesus demonstrated this beatitude in His life and ministry and death. Just as surely as He demonstrated meekness, mercy, and purity of heart, so did Jesus demonstrate that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” There can be no fault found with the form in which this beatitude is given. Paul faces his statement of the beatitude with a twofold caution, “Labouring,” he said, “you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” His caution “to remember” is certainly in place for us, for this is the forgotten beatitude. The Beatitudes describe the character traits of a happy Christian, and this one, so often forgotten, is the most joyous of them all. Until next time Stay in the Blessings I really want to encourage you to be diligent with your Bible study time, because God has so much more for us than we can get from just going to church once or twice a week and hearing someone else talk about the Word. When you spend time with God, your life will change in amazing ways, because God is a Redeemer.Theres nothing thats too hard for Him, and He can make you whole, spirit, soul and body! Welcome to Refinery Life Australia. The Inward Attitudes of a True Disciple is our theme for the next few Sunday mornings. This series is based on the Beatitudes, found in the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. Today we are discussing, Rest Unto Your Souls. As Australians, our heritage has hardly prepared us for this beatitude. Our heritage is one that encourages contempt for what we understand as “the meek” and admiration of the self assertive. One the one hand, we have inherited, through the times, the Roman ideal of greatness in which meekness has no place. On the other hand, we are the heirs of Anglo Saxon self assertiveness and insistence on personal rights and privileges. Under these influences, we have come to admire power, domination, and personal success. Matthew 5:5 NKJV Blessed are the meek,For they shall inherit the earth. On hearing this the average Australian will say, “To tell you the truth, I just don't admire that. Doesn't that mean a weak and spineless creature, a namely pamby, flabby in character and lacking self respect?” Labouring under this false impression of what meekness is, they ask, “Who wants to be meek? More than that, the statement “They shall inherit the earth” is ridiculous. Maybe some of them will go to heaven someday, but “inherit the earth?” Forget it! I don't believe it!” This beatitude meets with a poor reception by most people. Perhaps none in the list is as unpopular as this. To the popular mind this beatitude is undesirable and unbelievable. But popularity is no reliable test of anything and certainly not of things that pertain to Christ and His kingdom. The popular conception of Christian meekness is both erroneous and inadequate, and these ideas are therefore false. This is not a popular beatitude, because in the world's failure to understand what true meekness is, it neither admires nor desires it. But there are some other more reliable tests to apply to this saying of Jesus. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Jesus was stating a simple fact, and that fact is demonstrated to be true by three important tests. Until next time Stay in the Blessings I really want to encourage you to be diligent with your Bible study time, because God has so much more for us than we can get from just going to church once or twice a week and hearing someone else talk about the Word. The Removed Heart & Labouring Lips - Part 2
The Removed Heart & Labouring Lips
Psalm 127: Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum, in vanum laboraverunt, qui aedificant eam. Nisi Dominus custodierit civitatem, frustra vigilat, qui custodit eam. Psalm 127: Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. We must build on the solid foundations of interior life for us to discover the new Mediterraneans of apostolate in our life. A meditation preached by Fr. Ephesians 4:28 — Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones reminds that the gospel is wonderful because it is not for perfect people, but rather for sinners— for the adulterers, the liars, and the thieves. In this sermon on stealing from Ephesians 4:28 titled “Not Stealing, but Labouring,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones focuses on Paul's exhortation for believers to labor instead of steal. Many think about stealing in terms of simply taking physical possessions. While this is accurate, there is much more that stealing encompasses, such as stealing time from an employer, stealing thoughts, or even stealing ideas. When one thinks of stealing as applicable to anything and not just material possessions, they realize that it is something that they are forced to think about and look for in their own lives. What are some things to consider concerning stealing? First, there is something inherently shameful about it since it involves secrecy and deception. Second, it involves a misuse of a gift or ability that has been given by God, such as using hands to take what doesn't belong to them, or by using the brain to strategize how one may carry out theft. In addition, it's lazy and shows a complete lack of respect for the other person. Instead of stealing, Christians are implored to work hard and for the glory of God, recognizing that God has created a dignity that comes along with labor.

Featuring on today's show is mother-of-three and birth doula, Alyssa. After a routine ultrasound discovered that Alyssa had a shortened cervix and low fluid, she was prepped for an induction at 39 weeks. Only a short-time after having her waters ruptured, she gave birth to her daughter in the bath without any further interventions. Having had such a positive experience with her induction she decided to give up her MGP spot, instead choosing to stay in the comfort of her home to birth her second baby. Labouring on her deck as the sun rose and the birds sang in the background, she birthed her son into the water in under two hours. With her labour time drastically lowering each birth experience, her birth team were prepared to jump into action as she entered her 38th week gestation, but when her labour progressed even faster than anticipated, she barely had time to settle in the shower as her son came roaring earthside after only 45 minutes of labour. When God created, He did it by putting everything in its proper place. And yet, in our lives we witness so much chaos and disorder. What can we learn from creation about how things are meant to be? How does redemption bring order back in our lives?

We all labour in life for right and wrong reasons. Most of the time our labours yield nothing. But when we labour for the Lord as per His will we become powerful and productive. Labouring for the Lord brings glory to His holy name and great good to His people. May we live to labour for the Lord in these last days. Amen.
