#119: Homeschooled on a Boat— Now Homeschooling Her Daughter: Shellbe's Incredible Story

What happens when you grow up homeschooled on a sailboat, then experience public school, only to return to homeschooling as a parent? Shellbe's remarkable journey offers a window into an educational path less traveled, filled with powerful insights for any parent questioning traditional education.Born to parents who rejected conventional schooling, Shellbe spent her early years cruising the Bahamas on a sailboat. Her "classroom" was the open water, where learning to navigate charts, catch fish, and take responsibility weren't electives—they were survival skills. Using the Calvert School curriculum, her education blended formal academics with real-world application in ways most children never experience. "I knew responsibility," Shellbe reflects, recounting how she sailed dinghies with her toddler sister at just eight years old, learned to recover from capsizing, and developed problem-solving skills that have served her throughout life. When Shellbe entered public school in seventh grade, the contrast was stark. The rigid bell schedule, curriculum gaps, and social dynamics created challenges that shaped her understanding of what education could and should be. Despite her strong foundation in reading and writing, she struggled when the system couldn't accommodate her learning style—an experience that would later inform her approach to teaching her own daughter. Now homeschooling as a single parent, Shellbe has crafted an education for her daughter that honors both structure and freedom. With formal lessons sometimes just twice weekly, learning happens organically through exploration, measurement, and discovery. When her five-year-old spends a morning examining caterpillars with a magnifying glass, creating habitats, and measuring specimens, Shellbe recognizes this as valuable education that transcends textbooks.Whether you're currently homeschooling, considering the leap, or simply curious about alternative educational paths, this conversation will challenge your assumptions about how learning happens and what truly matters in preparing children for a fulfilled life.Connect with Shellbe:Instagram and Facebook are @Vital.Roots.CoachingShellbe is offering a FREE masterclass on how to have an Empowered Pregnancy & Birth next Friday the 16th!!What is the most important thing we can teach our kids?HOW TO HANDLE AN EMERGENCY!This could mean life or death in some cases!Help a child you know navigate how to handle an emergency situation with ease:Let's Talk, Emergencies! -and don't forget The Activity Book! The Tuttle Twins - use code Cheryl15 for 15% the age 5-11 series!Support the showInstagram: TheHomeschoolHowToPodcast Facebook: The Homeschool How To Podcast

When a mother has the devastating experience of leaving the hospital without a baby and perhaps only a memory box, many in our society expect them to get on with living and go back to their normal life.  But their life is changed forever, and many don't recognize or acknowledge that. Today we will hear the story of grief, anger, a battle, and finally, a life's purpose for one mother who had to walk this hard path. Through her mission, she struggled to get family leave extended to grieving parents, so no one would have to suffer as she did. She also discovered the importance of providing resources for self-care and connection to bereavement groups. Elizabeth “Liz” O'Donnell is a steadfast infant loss advocate leading the charge in raising awareness and prevention of stillbirth and infant mortality. Her daughter, Aaliyah, was born still in 2020. Today, she runs a one-woman non-profit, Aaliyah in Action, keeping her daughter's spirit alive, supporting mothers and families across the country who experience the pain of losing a baby, and advocating for legislation that could reduce the number of U.S. stillbirths. Liz is also a Director of Awareness for PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy, a grassroots initiative that advocates for evidence-based, respectful, and equitable maternity care aimed at preventing loss when possible. Before her advocacy work, Liz was a dedicated D.C. Public Schools elementary math and science schoolteacher for 7 years.    Listen and Learn: What hospitals traditionally do when a baby is born still How it feels for one mom to leave the hospital with empty arms That some states give FMLA leave for the parents of loss, and some don't Why Liz created this package for other grieving moms What is in the Self Care Box and why many hospitals now give out the boxes How you can share the importance of post-loss care with your hospital or agency   Resources & Mentions: Aaliyah in Action Push for Empowered Pregnancy Count the Kicks Elizabeth O'Donnell - hello@aaliyahinaction.org   Related Products from InJoy: Guide to Grief and Healing After the Loss of Your Baby

Welcome to another episode of the Tendrils of Grief podcast. Today, we have a deeply moving and inspiring guest, Elizabeth “Liz” O'Donnell. After the heart-wrenching experience of being sent home empty-handed from the hospital following the stillbirth of her daughter, Aaliyah, Liz decided to share her pain publicly. Her Instagram post, showing her holding Aaliyah in her hospital bed, went viral, drawing attention to the often overlooked struggles of stillborn families. Fueled by the outpouring of support and a desire to honor her daughter's spirit, Liz left her teaching career to advocate for parents of stillborn children. She founded the nonprofit organization Aaliyah in Action, which provides curated “self-care” packages as a first step toward healing for birthing parents and families. Liz also took on the fight for more compassionate maternity leave laws, successfully pushing for the passage of an Emergency Bereavement Bill in D.C. in March 2021. Today, Aaliyah in Action has partnered with 21 hospitals across six states and the District of Columbia. Liz's advocacy work continues nationally as the Co-Director of Awareness for PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy, a parent-led group dedicated to reducing the U.S. stillbirth rate and empowering expectant families. Recently, PUSH launched a Pregnancy After Loss Provider Training program to help prenatal care providers offer sensitive care to patients who are pregnant again after a perinatal loss. In episode 49, we sit down with two members of PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy, Allie Felker and Ana Lepe Vick.  These ladies share their personal stories of losing their babies to stillbirth, how this can happen to anyone, and what drove them to join PUSH to raise awareness and fight for change.  We also discuss two very important Federal Bills that would help prevent stillbirths.  We need you to call your Representatives and ask them to support the Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education (SHINE) for Autumn Act and the Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act (SPA) (there is more information on each below).Ana Lepe Vick is a maternal health advocate and stillbirth rights activist who grew up in the Bay Area and is a recent North Carolina transplant. She and Joshua, her husband of 16 years, are parents to 3 beautiful children (one no longer in their arms, but always in their hearts). Her traumatic experience with two miscarriages and her middle son, Owen Nathaniel's, unexpected stillbirth at delivery in 2015, called her to join the fight to end preventable stillbirths. As the Co-Director of Communications for PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy and Count the Kicks' Latinx Advisor, she is on the frontline of the movement to push for systemic change and save babies in memory of her son and all babies gone too soon. Allie Felker is a California native and a mother to three. She is a self-proclaimed loudmouth and high school debate nerd. Allie enjoys public speaking and actually met her husband by giving a TEDx talk! Despite being in the middle of a pandemic, her first pregnancy was perfect. As a healthy 28-year-old she never dreamed something could go wrong, especially after surpassing that daunting 13-week mark. But at nearly 32 weeks Allie was blindsided to learn that her son Henry Justice Felker (Hank) had died in her womb and would be stillborn. Allie has found peace through advocacy and enjoys using her voice as a way to parent Hank. She has two living children, Octavia Victory (Tavie) and Maximus Valor (Max) who are advocates in training. PUSH For Empowered PregnancyPUSH for Empowered Pregnancy is on a mission to end preventable stillbirth, and we're not taking no for an answer. 65 babies are dying in the second half of pregnancy every single day in the US. HOW TO DEAL WITH GRIEF AND TRAUMA is completely self, funded, produced, and edited by me, Nathalie Himmelrich. Consider making a small donation to support the Podcast here. Thank you! Today on the podcast I am speaking with Ana Vick about the trauma of stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Ana believes in the importance of stillbirth prevention during pregnancy. Having experienced the trauma of pregnancy loss multiple times, and finding out more about Owen's reason for death helped her move from self-blame and shame and gave her some sort of closure. This allowed Ana to turn her story into a meaningful advocacy to support others not having to experience what she had.  About this week's guest Ana Lepe Vick is a maternal health advocate and stillbirth rights activist who grew up in the Bay Area and is a recent North Carolina transplant. She is a wife and mother of 3, known as Still My Son on social media where she finds support and inspiration to continue pushing for change in memory of her middle son, Owen Nathaniel, and all babies gone too soon. Owen was unexpectedly born still at almost 32 weeks of a perfect "textbook" pregnancy via crash c-section. She also suffered miscarriages before and after Owen's death so she's no stranger to the trauma of pregnancy loss. Although she would much rather have her son in her arms, she proudly parents Owen through her activism and role as Co-Director of Communications of PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy (a stillbirth prevention non-profit she helped found with other bereaved families in 2021). As part of the Count the Kicks Influencer Advisory Board she leads targeted efforts to outreach to Spanish-speaking communities because every parent deserves to know how to protect their baby through fetal movement education. She is the Social Media Lead for the SHINE for Autumn Act, which is a bill she hopes will be passed soon for the U.S. to start making a systemic change to prevent stillbirths. In addition, Ana is helping to spread “Womb Wisdom” through her new educational platform, Sacred Birth Circle, where she interviews maternal health experts & birthing parents to help families be better informed about their pregnancy and birth journeys. She will always wish her family could be complete, but she's thankful she can keep her son's memory alive while saving babies in his honor. Check out Ana's links:Instagram Still My Son and Sacred Birth Circle Topics discussed in this episodeThe stillbirth of her son Owen The trauma of pregnancy lossThe importance of stillbirth prevention during pregnancyKnowing the reason for Owen's death helped Ana move from guilt and gave her some sort of closureResources mentioned in this episodeSupport the showSupport the show: Become a supporter of the show! Ever wonder how people get all the house things done AND play with their kids? Ade is here to challenge that thought. Instead of initiating all of your child play, she encourages observing them,  let them be bored and allow them to tap into their creative child play.  Because as much as we want to believe differently, they learn a lot through play! Ade Hofmann left over a decade of traditional teaching experience behind when she traded fluorescent lights for sunshine.  For the last six years, she has continued to rewrite the narrative of what early childhood looks and feels like. Her philosophy for early childhood education is that living is learning and that play is an essential right to for all! Thank you for listening to the Hey Shayla podcast!  Here, we love to learn new things and decide what works for us and our family.. Featuring on today's show is mother-of-three and birth doula, Alyssa. After a routine ultrasound discovered that Alyssa had a shortened cervix and low fluid, she was prepped for an induction at 39 weeks. Only a short-time after having her waters ruptured, she gave birth to her daughter in the bath without any further interventions. Having had such a positive experience with her induction she decided to give up her MGP spot, instead choosing to stay in the comfort of her home to birth her second baby. Labouring on her deck as the sun rose and the birds sang in the background, she birthed her son into the water in under two hours. With her labour time drastically lowering each birth experience, her birth team were prepared to jump into action as she entered her 38th week gestation, but when her labour progressed even faster than anticipated, she barely had time to settle in the shower as her son came roaring earthside after only 45 minutes of labour. "Umbilical cords are the lifeline to blood + nutrients for all fetuses. Like a garden hose, if the cords flatten or bend, the supply line can be damaged or cut off, impacting fetal development & increasing the risk of death." Why then is more not being done to monitor our babies' cords or advise us on prevention of stillbirth caused by cord issues through monitoring of movement changes? Is it truly "impossible" to foresee a cord related stillbirth or is a complacent attitude that some babies cannot be saved causing things to be done "according to protocol" but without any additional effort to save vulnerable babies? We're grateful for this important discussion with Dr. Jason H. Collins who is well known in the stillbirth community as the expert in cord "accidents". We are using quotes because an accident by definition is any event that happens unexpectedly, without a deliberate cause. Cord loss parents, like myself, do not believe you can classify damage or death due to cord complications (cord compressions, entanglement, true knots, etc.) as an accident if it is known that there is a risk and nothing is being done to prevent this outcome. Listen to this Live conversation to find out how you can advocate for your baby's cord to be closely monitored during your pregnancies. Don't leave the life & well-being of your child up to chance, these "accidents" are often preventable, but we must demand for more to be done! Samantha is the Executive Director of PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy, an action-oriented nonprofit founded by bereaved families and dedicated solely to eradicating preventable stillbirth in the US. Since her daughter's cord accident just two days before the due date of her otherwise blissful first pregnancy, Samantha has been devoted to educating expectant parents about stillbirth risk and changing the way prenatal medicine is practiced so that no other parent is left with the devastating “what-ifs” that torture so many stillbirth families. We don't talk about stillbirth and infant loss enough because to acknowledge that they happen is to acknowledge that they could happen to US. We protect ourselves from these stories, which are OTHER PEOPLE'S STORIES, to further separate someone else's reality from that of our own. For Anna Feldberg, our guest on this episode, having lost her first daughter Charlotte, who died suddenly at 35 weeks gestation, is a reality from which she cannot separate. Anna shares with us her very personal story, and how she got to a place where the grief  (and guilt) was no longer something all-encompassing. Folks often wonder what to say to someone who has experienced the loss of a child, as if that friend is on the other side of a wall and we can't begin to reach them. This episode helps us better understand how to support someone who is going through infant loss -- or, if it is something that has touched our own lives, how we can begin to move through our own grief process. 23,000 babies are born still in the US each year -- and often, the causes for these stillbirths are not clear.  After losing Charlotte, Anna found out that her placenta had been small -- something doctors had never mentioned to her during the course of her pregnancy. Anna has become a passionate supporter of consistently measuring the placenta during pregnancy. She now works with an organization called PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy,  to research and integrate similar maternal/fetal monitoring protocols into standard prenatal care.Resources Anna shares in this episode:"What helped me a lot were support groups and connecting with other women (and men) who went through it."PUSH's Resource Page: From support groups to medical resources and connections to grief support book suggestions: https://www.pushpregnancy.org/pregnancy-infant-lossStar Legacy Foundation: Primarily  focused on pregnancy loss grief support. Also have a mentor program where they pair a “veteran” loss mom up with a new loss mom.

This event is to raise awareness and educate others on the Stillbirth topic. This event will be a survivors resource training! Hosted by Regeline Sabbat - Motivational Keynote Speaker, 5x Bestselling Author, Life Coach, First generation Haitian American, the host of Walk With Me Podcast on JRQTV, Financial Expert, and CEO and Founder of Life Service Center of America, LLC. Endorsed by Les Brown.   Speakers: (Master of Ceremonies) Lakisha James - Corporate event planner, Set Designer, Mentor, Author, and Atlanta Chapter Leader for World Women Conference & Awards Stacey Matarazzo Dinburg- Stacey is the vice president and co-founder of The 2 Degrees Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to impacting stillbirth outcomes in the state of NJ. As a mother of a stillborn daughter Stacey has felt the need to turn her tragedy into a purpose. Stacey and her husband Sean's first born daughter, Rhyan Ava was born sleeping on January 30, 2014 at 37 weeks gestational age. She has since become an advocate for maternal health including infertility, maternal mental health, pregnancy and infant loss, pregnancy after loss, and parenting after loss. Over the past 6 years, Stacey has been an invited speaker at RMA of NJ's series “The Doctor is in”, “The Stillbirth Management Conference” through the Partnership of Maternal & Child Health of Northern New Jersey, and has testified for the appropriate implementation of The Autumn Joy Stillbirth Research & Dignity Act in Trenton. Her stillbirth story has been featured in NY FOX 5's Dr. Manny Alvarez's “Ask Dr. Manny” news blog and in Hackensack Merdian Health Views magazine. Stacey is a certified special educator and studied behavioral psychology at Caldwell University. She is currently studying to become a certified bereavement and birthing doula. She also works part time as an instructional facilitator and a teacher trainer at a specialized school for students with special needs. Most importantly, Stacey is the proud mother of 2 beautiful little girls, her rainbows. She currently resides in New Jersey with her family.   Ana Vick- Ana Vick is the Co-Director of Awareness for PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy and a mother of three (always missing one) whose traumatic experience with two early miscarriages and her middle son, Owen's, unexpected stillbirth in 2015, have called her to join the fight to end preventable stillbirths.  Putting her UCLA Psychology B.A. and television production background into use, Ana leads discussion and support rooms weekly on Clubhouse in the Empowered Pregnancy Club that she founded to connect with loss families, expectant parents and medical providers. She is a vocal part of the community of bereaved parents on social media (her handle on all platforms is StillMySon) helping to break the stigma and silence shrouding stillbirth. She interviews other bereaved parents regularly about their experience because she believes that by amplifying the stillbirth crisis we can create an urgent outcry for improved standards of care for everyone.  Ana promotes change through supporting legislative efforts including advocating for stillbirth tax credits around the country and bills targeting stillbirth prevention and bereavement care. She is relentless in her determination to end stillbirth and improve maternity care because of the rampant number of families, like her own, that continue to be wrecked by this failure of our medical system. Our country has a long way to go in developing protocols to prevent stillbirths, so it's critical that we are not silent on this issue. As a bilingual Latina, Ana's interest in improving the higher rate of stillbirth in the BIPOC community is deeply personal and an area of change she will be dedicating great attention to this year.  Ana has shared her personal story in national and local press including Today Parents and CBS 17 News, however, her main focus is on collaboration with other nonprofits, pregnancy advice platforms (such as Mommy Labor Nurse and Juna) and influencers to spread PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy's prevention tips to expectant parents. By empowering families with the knowledge that stillbirth still happens (even in healthy pregnancies like hers was) and explaining what they can do to minimize their risks, she believes we can save many babies in memory of her son, Owen, and all babies gone too soon.  The Vick's recently relocated cross country from California to North Carolina, where her husband is from, with their two living children and two mini aussie pups; They fill each other's days with joy and gratitude as they navigate life after loss together. Randy is a Canadian dad of 2 girls (one in heaven). He lost his second born daughter to stillbirth in June 2020 and since then has realized the gap in support for grieving dads.  He is eager to spread the message of what it's like as a grieving dad and how we can support them when they need it most Kim is a mom of 2 girls (one in heaven). Her oldest is 4 years old and River Joy would have been 18 months old as she was born still at 34 weeks pregnant in June of 2020.  Kim is married her to husband Randy of almost 7 years where together with their daughter they live in Ontario Canada. Kim is passionate about stillbirth advocacy and supporting others through their grief with her social media platform (Instagram). Her goal is to help other mamas know they aren't alone in their grief, and also help to prevent stillbirth from happening by educating others.  Karina Portes, mommy to son Trevor Rafael whom was stillborn. As a grieving mom finding out the cause of death of my son was devastated. After sending his placenta pathology to and Dr. Harvey Kliman from Yale university who determined it was from a Placenta abruption due to a 16% percentile small Placenta. In other words this could have possibly been preventable if my baby placenta was measure during my pregnancy which unfortunately is not standard care in the United States today. There are 23,000 babies a year that are stillborn just in the United States and a lot of them are preventable making measuring the placenta standard care would've save my baby and many more. Today my family and I have to live to this ongoing grief and trama.    Sponsors: Ragne Sinikas - Founder of World Women Conference & Awards (WWCA), Women Entrepreneurs TV, Change Makers Coach, Public Speaker Michael D. In today's episode we are going to be giving you 3 tips for an empowered pregnancy and labor, with nurse and midwife, Raquel Chaves. The first tip we go over is information, which means being informed of what your preferences are during pregnancy, knowing what can happen, what kinds of labor, and what can go wrong. The second tip is you need to find a provider you feel comfortable with and Raquel tells us that when you ask a question and the response you get is ‘You don't need to worry. We've got you covered.' Then it's likely that the provider will not be respectful of your wishes. The third tip is empowerment. To be able to make the decision for yourself, you need to find the strength in yourself to decide and not act out of fear. “Sometimes people are so focused on what could go wrong and avoiding that at all costs, that they don't focus on what it could be like if it all went fantastic.” 17:47Tip #1 1:40Tip #2 10:08Tiip #3 14:58“If you have that trust built in with your provider, then you can hand the safety aspect of the birth over to them if you know that they will respect you and will go along with your preferences until something happens and they need to shift.” 19:41https://www.facebook.com/theirishmummy/https://www.instagram.com/the_irish_mummy/https://www.theirishmummy.comhttps://www.theirishmummy.com/ebook
