Perinatal depression is a common challenge for new parents, one in 10 was the common standard. Perinatal mental health problems have however significantly increased during the pandemic, up to almost every other pregnant and postpartum women struggling with depression and anxiety. It is a dark place for the entire family, the couple, and the individuals. An untreated perinatal depression causes longterm consequences on the child's mental health. Something that can with relatively little effort be avoided, if assessed early, the parent getting the nurture and outlet of someone listening and containing non-judgmental and fully present. It can feel awful and horrible as a parent to feel negatively and hating one's own child, that was often extremely wanted, yet when struggling with perinatal depression one simply doesn't have the resources to do so. Parents not struggling with perinatal depression at times can also feel that way. Being angry at times at your child is normal, children trigger our own inner child and childhood needs that haven't been met. It's important how to resolve a situation as such, not avoid that by all means.   Steps to get out: Seek professional help early. Get support and take the oxygen mask self first to help your child. Self care is essential to nurture and care yourself. Join a group of supportive non judgmental women and/or men. @drschwank @unesurcent @optimalperformancezurich

However, they will empower you to maximise your potential and relentlessly pursue your goals regardless of what is happening in the world around you.Daniel's sitehttps://www.dreamstogoals.co.uk/Although new fathers are at lower risk of depression than are new mothers,2 the prevalence of depression in new fathers is higher than that in the general population.3 Depression occurs in 10% of men from their partner's first trimester to one year postpartum; three to six months after birth is a particularly sensitive period of increased symptoms.2 Fathers who live with their children do not have a history of increased depressive symptoms prior to having a child but are at increased risk of depressive symptoms from birth through the first five years of lifePerinatal depression in men, also known as paternal perinatal depression (PPND), is a significant mental health issue that affects approximately 9-10% of fathers during the period from their partner's pregnancy through the first year after childbirth. While less prevalent than maternal perinatal depression, PPND is more common in new fathers compared to the general male population.Key aspects of PPND include:Timing: PPND can occur anytime between the first trimester of pregnancy and one year postpartum, with the 3-6 month period after birth being particularly sensitive.Symptoms: Men may experience traditional depressive symptoms such as sadness, mood swings, and loss of interest in activities. However, they may also exhibit male-specific symptoms like irritability, anger, increased alcohol or drug use, and avoidant behaviors.Risk factors: These include a history of depression, stress related to parenting, role changes, financial concerns, and interparental conflict. Maternal depression is also moderately correlated with paternal depression.Impact: PPND can negatively affect parenting practices, child development (both internalizing and externalizing behaviors), and family dynamics.Screening: While not routinely screened, opportunities for identifying PPND exist during prenatal visits, postnatal check-ups, and infant clinical encounters. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) can be used, with a cutoff of 10 points for fathers.Treatment: Interventions may include pharmacotherapy (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and psychotherapy (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapies).Challenges: Men may be less likely to seek help due to stigma or traditional masculine norms. Additionally, conventional depression screening tools may underreport symptoms in men.Recognizing and addressing PPND is crucial not only for the well-being of fathers but also for their relationships with partners and children. There is a growing need for male-specific treatment strategies and increased awareness among healthcare providers to better support fathers during the perinatal periodSources:

Mallory Haney is a cognitive behavioral therapist focused on perinatal anxiety and depression. She joins the mom group chat this week to share her expertise. Their conversation ranges from how to differentiate depression from the “baby blues”, what symptoms look like, and the stigma that still surrounds perinatal depression and how that makes it so isolating. This week we're joined by Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Clinician Lisiane Latouche to discuss what postnatal depression and anxiety is, and what some of the signs and symptoms are.  We know this can affect both women and men after the birth of their baby, and in some cases even during pregnancy. This is unfortunately a common condition which is why discussions like these are so important to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms, and how to best support someone with perinatal depression and anxiety.  Lisiane Latouche originally trained at The University of Sydney as a Social Worker and completed further post- graduate studies in Infant Mental Health at the NSW Institute of Psychiatry. Lisiane is a Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Clinical Supervisor, Trainer and Specialist Clinician with just over 30 years' experience in the perinatal space.  Lisiane has a particular interest in attachment- based interventions and is currently contracted as a Sessional Clinical Supervisor in a leading Parent - Baby Unit in NSW and at Gidget House, North Sydney after a career of 30 years at Tresillian. Episode #50: We're joined by Laura Vollset & Maggie Muir to discuss Perinatal Depression & Anxiety (PPD). While this is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, it is often unrecognized and under-diagnosed. Laura shares her experience of having had debilitating PPD after the birth of her twins. She sought treatment, found support, and wended her way to back to wellness and joy in parenting. Maggie Muir, a Licensed Psychotherapist, Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and Perinatal Support Group Leader explains what PPD is, who is at risk, and how and where mothers and family members can get help.

New evidence from think tank Koi Tu has found at least 15 percent of Kiwi women are affected by mental distress during the perinatal period. That number rises to 33 percent for Maori, Asian, and Pacific women. Koi Tu Director Sir Peter Gluckman told Mike Hosking the research shows the consequences of a stressed mother for both them and their babies are serious. He says unless we identify stress early in mothers, we will see more children fail at school, and more women commit suicide. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jessie shares her story of her beautiful daughter. Soon after she found out she was pregnant she was hit with morning sickness. As she geared up for her first prenatal visit, she was met with news that she was not as far along as she thought and the dread came through as she continued to battle morning sickness, severe nausea, and vomiting. As weeks progressed and she was hopeful for the second trimester, she continued to suffer from severe morning sickness. She noticed she was suffering from prenatal depression and sought help from a mental health counselor. She was anxious to meet her baby girl and scheduled an induction at 39 weeks but did everything she could to induce labor naturally. She went in for the induction, and was slow to progress as they started the process. In the morning, things turned around and she progressed to a 10 in a short time frame. After pushing for 29 minutes she finally met her beautiful baby girl. Baby girl did have some respiratory issues but was all cleared after some antibiotics. Her postpartum experience has been positive overall after struggling so much during pregnancy.Visit our website and blog: www.thegoldenhourbirthpodcast.comFollow us on Instagram here and hereFollow us on Facebook hereIntro Song by Carpathians (Donny Rodgers): https://carpathians.bandcamp.com/track/lavaman

In this week's episode we speak to western Sydney mum of two, Katelyn. Like so many of us in our first birth Katelyn just wanted to experience a physiological birth in a hospital setting, but ended up agreeing to an induction. Interestingly Katelyn intuitively felt that her induction was not medically necessary and there was a good chance she'd end up having surgery that day, yet she felt she couldn't say no.Katelyn was determined to re-write her story in her second birth, and that she most certainly did even though despite giving her absolute all this birth ended in a caesarean too. On paper the two births might look similar, but in reality, they were polar opposite experiences.Katelyn learned so much on her VBAC journey and generously shares much of this knowledge with us. Pregnancy and child birth are really big events upon a woman's body. Sometimes, that experience can bring about depression or depressive symptoms, which seems strange, but completely normal. Clayton Instagram: @jcware99 Facebook: Clayton Ware Our Identity: WellHouse Church is a church seeking to reimagine what the church is. Too many people have been hurt by a church in their past, because church has become something that it was never meant to be: an event or building that we attend. At WellHouse, we believe that the people of God are the church and that the love of God should be experienced through the people of God. So, WellHouse has returned to a New Testament expression of our faith by meeting in homes and dedicating ourselves to: the teaching of the scriptures, the fellowship of the believers, the breaking of bread together, and praying together for one another. We are focused on being a genuine expression of Christian hospitality and service to our community and the people of our community. At WellHouse we want to be a place where people can Be Real, Be Relational, and Be Restored. As our leadership was dreaming up this vision, we looked at Scripture and saw that the earliest expressions of the church met in homes and it was rare that all of the believers were together. Today, most churches have found themselves spending a large portion of their budget on buildings that they rarely use. Not WellHouse. We want to keep our overhead low so we can spend our money on the things that matter, being the hands and feet of Jesus. So, we meet in the homes of our members for the majority of our meetings. Once per month, we all come together at a rented facility to devote our selves together as the whole church for the purpose of worshipping God together.

#002-Many women approach pregnancy, and especially the birth of their children, as a sacred moment, as something they've long contemplated before it arrives. And with these thoughts come expectations. Such was the case for my guest today. For all three of her children's births, she'd imagined a natural birth, with both the pain and the sense of triumph that experience involves. But circumstance got in the way, once, twice, all three times.  Despite the challenges she faced, including peripartum depression, she found some significant ways to square the difference between expectation and reality, and when she couldn't find them, she created them. Using her experience as inspiration, she co-founded the Omaha Better Birth Project, to help give women the birth experience they imagined.
