Following her diagnosis with dystonia, Leanne discovered swimming as part of her rehab but but the sport became an athletic pursuit as Leanne has amassed one of the most impressive resumes in swimming. Following her first Paralympics in Tokyo, Leanne smashed the 2022 Worlds where she won 7 gold medals! Then came a health setback that could have derailed her career, but she bounced back to make the 2023 Worlds team and still won a medal. Then came Paris where she won two individual Paralympic gold medals (50 & 100 free) and two silvers on relays. In this episode of Love and Murder, we journey through the twisted case of Martin and Lianne Smith, a couple whose life on the run from the law ends in unspeakable tragedy. We're whisked away to a quaint English village where the Smith's lives unravel in a saga of betrayal and bloodshed that spans across the UK and into the sun-drenched streets of Spain. For 18 years, Martin and Leanne Smith harbored secrets dark enough to eclipse the innocence of their nomadic existence. But when Martin's heinous crimes against a child surface, the couple's world implodes, leading to a run from justice that ends in the tragic smothering of their two young children. The courtroom becomes a battleground of defense pleas for insanity, but the cold, hard verdict speaks volumes of a mother's calculated cruelty. And just when you think the story has revealed all its shadows, a question of paternity casts a new pall over this already dark tale. This episode is a horrible reminder that love can sometimes be the first step to the most horrific of human behaviors - murder. Remember to join the conversation and share your thoughts on this case. Non-binary neurodivergent counsellor Katie Harrison LPC, based in Misouri is a total ledge! Their unique perpective as all of the above enables Katie to identify neurodvergence in clients the world over. Please note, that identification is not the same as diagnosis! Once identified, Katie helps clients navigate the adult ADHD diagnosis process in their country. Which comes with added difficulties when you are non-cisgendered.It's been said that ADHDers are highly intuitive, Katie argues that the so called ‘intuition' of people who are Assigned Female At Birth; especially those with late diagnosed ADHD is actually due to hyper-vigilance; a trauma response. Gender is a social construct, and in this insightful episode Katie shares a link between the LGBTQIA+ community and neurodivergence that their work has uncovered.Katie was pushed outside of the classroom, which made them feel unacceptable to society. This lead to not being defined by social constructs… existing on the parameters of society. THANK YOU to the AMAZING Katie Harrison LPC for educating us and sharing their late ADHD diagnosis journey! After last week's tear jerker, be prepared to cry again, but this time with laughter! LA based Comedian/Actor Merril Davis, originally from Miami, is one of the funniest people we have had the absolute pleasure to interview! Like us, Merrill basically has a neon flashing ADHDAF sign on her forehead, and is as perplexed as we are as to how they all went unnoticed. Alongside the words that haunt our dreams such as 'could try harder', or 'you're too much'; we discovered Merrill through another one of 'those phrases'... Merril 'means well'. This was the title of her incredible standup show at The Edinburgh Fringe last year, in which she shared her experiences of undiagnosed ADHD in 19 shows to rave reviews. She connected with many late diagnosed ADHDers who felt validated by her humour and unapologetic unmasking. Merrill was labelled 'slow' in convent school, but unstructured college life was when her struggles really surfaced. Back to back job sackings, twice by her own father! Her ADHD symptoms even led to a one night stay in jail. She discovered a therapist who immediately pointed out the obvious in 2016 and was diagnosed with Combined Type ADHD. Merrill is happy to finally have 'the magic potion' to help her manage life better. At times she even feels positive about having ADHD; but then come low moments when she feels heartbroken by the time and friendships lost to ADHD tax. This interview is the perfect episode for Blue Monday week; Merrill made our faces hurt with laughter whilst helping heal our wounds with validation! THANK YOU SO MUCH MERRILL, YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND! ENJOY! xxIf you've found this podcast helpful & are in a position to do so, please help us continue to help others by joining our Community. In this episode we explore where Laura is up to on the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster and reflect on a monumental year since her diagnosis; that saw the start of a brand new chapter of her life.At dawn, the day after being diagnosed with ADHD, Laura realised that her lifelong problems were not her fault. It suddenly dawned on her that she no longer needed to hate and chastise herself. This was the dawn of a new era; which saw her start this podcast... with Dawn :) But what was the motivation behind becoming an ADHD activist? Sadly, a tragic chain of events which have impacted how Laura views the world and her place in it. Whilst navigating the grief cycle of late ADHD diagnosis, she has also been dealing with bereavement and devastating news. She questions if perhaps some of the emotional dysregulation and RSD are just sadness due to bereavement. Grief hits different for neurodivergents; and for someone finally aware of their serious time blindness; is it any wonder that she constantly hears the clock ticking? BUT it isn't all gloom and doom! Armed with the answers to her struggles and having responded very well to ADHD medication; Laura has had an INCREDIBLE year! She has overcome the anger that she feared would never shift and is hopeful that ADHD coaching and therapy will improve her life further...meaning that she might actually be able to rest at some point! :)If you are suffering with grief, you are not alone. Happy New Year! New year, new you? Us neither! ;)We are so excited to share this incredible blether with a legendary lady for our first episode of 2023! If you haven't already heard of Single Parent Pessimist Blogger, Claire or listened to her incredible Mind Vox Podcast, you need to remedy that… but not until you've listened to her story here first of course! :)Claire was diagnosed (albeit rather vaguely?!) in 2022, she also identifies strongly with autism. Having blogged for a decade about her experiences as a single parent, the pandemic inspired Claire to create Mind Vox Podcast to raise mental health awareness. Claire's ADHD, paired with her experiences have led to injustice sensitivity coursing through her veins. A self proclaimed chronic pain warrior, we are in absolute awe of this warrior woman! Don't let the name fool you, this pessimist blew us away with her positive reflections on ADHD! As informative as it is inspirational, we are sure you'll love this blether! THANK YOU SO MUCH CLAIRE! Siobhan O'Connor - @notsosecretlysober was diagnosed with ADHD in May of this year, at 32 in Manchester. In this inspirational blether, she shares her battles to overcome the ADHD comorbidities of alchohol and drug abuse; and concludes with her top tips for a Sober Christmas! Historically, Siobhan felt pride in being 'the last person standing' at parties. Though she didn't drink everyday, when she did, her binge drinking was so extreme that she ended up being hospitalised on multiple occasions! Getting blackout drunk exacerbated her ADHD trait of risk taking behaviour. The terrifying situations Siobhan found herself in, in the name of 'fun', were no laughing matter! Prior to four years ago, Siobhan LOVED drinking! It was her whole identity(!) and led her to taking recreational drugs, and in turn into dangerous situations and debt. Reading Russell Brand's Recovery, inspired a year off the sauce... she has never looked back! Siobhan has a BRILLIANTLY names Social Media Management company: @ousaucedmedia - get it! :) Dawn felt so inspired by Siobhan's story, she has decided this will be her first ever sober Christmas... and who knows what 2023 will bring! We are so excited to share this very special bonus blether with a very special person in Laura's life; who has become a very special person to ADHDAF! Introducing the legendary Steph Thompson, creator of All The Discos handmade accessories; including our collaborative ADHDAF X All The Discos Bolt Earrings, Leopard Print Tree Decorations and Disco Party Capes. Laura & Steph were thick as thieves from aged 11, until that wrecking ball of ADHD swung in and destroyed 20 years of friendship! Laura's masking caused serious miscommunication and conflict to devastating consequences. The once best friends didn't speak for over two years! Despite masking to protect herself, hiding who she was and all that she was suffering was the very thing that kept her from safety. Even with the very best of intentions, lying can cause great pain. After finally reuniting and being brave enough to tell the whole horrible truth behind the facade, the foes were friends once more. This is a story of hope for the great many ADHDers who struggle to maintain friendships and often find themselves in conflict. With honest communication and compassion, even the deepest of wounds can be healed. We are so excited to share this blether with our favourite ADHD content creator! Adele, of This Might Help ADHD creates such incredible social media posts that we share so much of her work, it's bordering on plagiarism! :) This Melbourne based writer got diagnosed at the start of the year; here she jumps onboard the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster with us all the way from down under. Adele shares her content to spark conversation, to raise ADHD Awareness and to be a voice for those that can struggle to articulate the ADHD experience. Her words perfectly encapsulate what it feels like to have ADHD, and she uses @this_might_help_adhd to defend and support ADHDers with her informative and validating posts. This legendary lady literally hits the nail on the head every single time! WE BLOODY LOVE HER!!!Alongside sharing her experiences, Adele talks about the validation that diagnosis brings. Though Adele can appreciate that the process was a lot more straightforward for her in Australia than for many in the UK, (ourselves included) her message is that ADHD Diagnosis at any age is life changing, invaluable and in many cases life saving! Just like us, a late ADHD diagnosis, and discovering how the neurodevelopmental condition can be viewed in society, and the systems around it, hasn't just changed her life... raising ADHD awareness has become her life purpose! As a Mother, Adele carries guilt and concerns about passing on ADHD to her children. She has created her incredible platform to make the world a better place for ADHDers of future generations. We absolutely adore her concept of creating an ADHD statement available on thismighthelpadhd.com: Including firm, confident and clear statements that can help get your point across in the workplace, to the Dr and to ADHD deniers. To arm ADHDers with meaningful ways to calmly defend ADHD when it's spoken about in a hurtful or misinformed way. Seriously, the woman is a LEGEND; THANK YOU SO MUCH ADELE! Thunder bolts and lightning, very very…frustrating! This episode is proof that three women failed by the system uniting really can cause a storm! Alongside being an award-winning Documentary Maker, Creative Director, Author, and Yoga Instructor, Hana Walker- Brown also has the patience of a Saint! This legendary lady persevered with this absolutely chaotic episode in which we battled the elements. A terrible storm caused internet problems, with Dawn getting booted off Zoom multiple times! There are a lot of stops and starts (hence slightly longer length) and a fair few really irritating Discord notification noises - too quiet for Laura to notice with her hearing problems, but loud enough to be picked up on the recording - APOLOGIES! At least it shows that our ‘We are ADHDAF' Community Platform is popping! :DNever has there been such a catastrophic and brilliant interview! As contradictory as the traits of ADHD and Autism; both of which Hana signified in her neurodivergent screening process. Diagnosed with ADHD at 31; she may pursue an Autism assessment in the future once the first diagnosis has sunk in. Like so many of us, Hana is extremely hard on herself. At university, she had such extreme burnout, she was hospitalised! Misdiagnosed and prescribed anxiety and depression meds time and time again. Through raised awareness, she finally recognised her struggles as ADHD symptoms, only to be dismissed by her GP who stated, ‘a lot of women think they have this!' If you are listening lady - SHAME ON YOU! Hana has been waiting two years for NHS ADHD therapy. This episode is rammed full of insight, pearls, camaraderie, compassion and validation. So do follow the wonderful Hana's lead and persevere with this slightly disjointed conversation. It truly is a special one! From at first viewing ADHD as her Superpower to then her kryptonite and now finding self forgiveness. This is one hell of a ride... Enjoy! THANK YOU SO MUCH HANA! We hope to join forces again and cause more storms very soon! If you've found this podcast helpful and you are in a position to do so, please help us continue to help others by joining our Community. What do you do when you completely miss creating a plan for your podcast episode that's set to be released in 2 days? Well, you run to your friends -- aka your Community -- and ask them for help!! And that's exactly what I did! Having no specific topic for this week's episode, I decided to make it interactive by having friends ask me questions that I would answer on the show. So I turned to the LIGHTbeamers Community, told them what was happening and what I intended to do, and boy oh boy, did I get some fantastic Qs!! So I invite you to join me today as I answer questions ranging from how to handle pressure to what's the best thing about our family's recent move … truly a mixed bag of nuts!! Here are the contributors to this week's episode, and their Qs: Ashley DeLuca asks: how do you handle the pressure to do all the things? (Timely? I know!!) Rachel Marie Nelson wants to know: why the color yellow? Another one from Rachel: how do you draw stories out of others? Leanne Smith: what was a limiting belief that was smashed during the book launch of Elevate Your Voice? From Melinda Kunst and also Leanne Smith: what is my go-to way of unwinding and what does being slow and present mean to me? Becky Burroughs: what was the criteria I used to decide what to stop doing or how did I decide what sort of things to hand off to my team? Julie: what has been the best thing about your recent move? This turned out to be such a fun episode to record because I got to talk about and answer YOUR choice of topics and questions. If not for the predicament I found myself in, I may have not had the chance to discuss these things with you! Again, thank you to the wonderful ladies of the LIGHTbeamers Community for helping out this week and if there's anything else you want to ask me, let's keep this going inside the group! And if you're not in there yet, I'm inviting you to join the LIGHTbeamers Community on Facebook. It's a safe space for everyone to learn storytelling, share their stories, and connect with other LIGHTbeamers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On today's episode of the Think Courageously Podcast, I'm taking a deep dive into the rollercoaster ride of becoming an author. Three weeks after my major spinal surgery in July, I said "yes" to the opportunity to contribute a chapter to the book "Elevate Your Voice". Writing my chapter (Living and Grieving with Courage) and seeing it through the editing and publication process has been a big deal for me and an amazing journey. It has been nine months in the making, and the official launch date of the book is April 6th.I am excited and proud to be an author, but it is also scary. In this episode, I share my feelings about the actual writing experience and the collaborative process that was deployed to bring this book to life. I talk about the community of women who are authors, the role accountability played in the process and the wonderful friendship I developed with my partner, Leanne Smith. I describe how, through an intensive brainstorming process, I kept coming back to the one story that I knew I had to write. Let me be clear, it is not the story I expected to write. It is the story I needed to write. Finally, I share the powerful lessons that came from writing my chapter including: The not so subtle reminder that we can do hard things. How writing gave me the closure I needed to work through the most painful experience of my life. The importance of my message in supporting others who are also on a grief journey. The unexpected feeling of really creating a legacy piece for my family and their families for the futureAnd of course the power of finishing what you start. Please purchase your book on April 6th on Amazon. Be sure to leave a review and share the book with others. And, I would love for you to send me an email at deb@thinkgoodcompany.com about the book and my chapter. I can't wait to hear from you!
