Jayda and Louis explore their academic journeys, with Louis sharing how a teacher's disparaging comments pushed him to pursue medical school, despite it not being his true passion. Finding the courage to pivot, Louis rediscovered his love for zoology and began combining his passions for nature and music to raise awareness about climate change. Louis shares some incredible facts about animals but also a feel understanding of how colonial ideologies are reliant on separating humans from nature and gives examples of how this occurred. Louis also opens up about working in the Wildlife film industry as a mixed-race Black man, revealing its lack of inclusivity and colonial undertones. He critiques the predominance of white professionals in zoology and environmental fields, and the disconnection of Black and Brown communities from their ancestral lands. Louis explains why he believes spending time in nature is a powerful act of resistance for city-based POC, and how he is helping make outdoor spaces more accessible.Together Jayda and Louis discuss the mental health benefits of nature, Louis' transformative trips to the Amazon and his paternal homeland, Dominica, and the climate crisis' impact on the island. Jayda and Louis also reflect on their time at COP26, criticizing its shortcomings while celebrating the connections it led to with native climate activists worldwide. Together, they examine colonialism's lasting impact on nature and how communities can resist and heal through reconnection with each other and the outdoors.Follow Louis VIFollow Jayda GFollow Here's Hoping PodcastMore on our guest EARTHLINGLouis VI is a Rapper, Musician, Film Composer, Documentary Maker, Zoologist and Nature activist, cross-pollinating music & nature. Louis' mission is to use his music, documentaries and keynote speeches to help diasporic people reestablish their connection with nature. Louis' keynote speech at COP26 about the colonial legacy of Climate Change and the alienation of people of colour in the UK from access to nature, drew on his award-winning documentary “The World Is (Y)ours” . Louis has collaborated extensively with Earth Percent, a charity founded by Brian Eno and was one of first artists in the world to officially feature “NATURE” as an artist. His music centres the climate justice movement - weaving together a love for melody and a multitude of genres cut with atmospheric field recordings from his time spent in the natural world. “Being on tour with King Crimson,” in the words of their film director, “is like being with the school rugby team and, at the last minute, the games teacher falls ill so they send them out with the maths master. But the team starts winning ...” Is there another band remotely like them? Their leader believes in discipline and cold showers in the morning. He practices four hours a day. Life in the group was “wretched” from 1969 to 2013. Adrian Belew says it made his hair fall out. The running gag among its 22 one-time members is “you're irreplaceable, just like the last bloke”. With great bravery and patience, Toby Amies has made a documentary about them, ‘In The Court Of The Crimson King: King Crimson at 50', and talks to us here about what he discovered. There's much to be enjoyed, not least… … the fact that Robert Fripp commissioned the film and for months refused to take part in it. … the encounter with Sister Dana, the prog rock nun from Norway. … the film's reflections upon “the metronome of mortality”. .. the thoughts and perspectives of current and former band members, particularly Bill Bruford, Bill Reiflin, Jakko Jakszyk and Ian McDonald who “broke Robert's heart” in 1969 and is still touchingly apologetic. … the religious ecstasy pursued by their audience. … how King Crimson's music feels like a deep-body tissue massage. … and the extraordinary two-minute pause that a motionless Fripp leaves before answering one of the film's questions. It's very entertaining, not least because it was made by someone who wasn't a fan but simply curious and had questions he wanted answered. This original and idiosyncratic film suits them perfectly. When our relationship fails it can be overwhelming. Where do we start? We may want to get on the first dating app we can find and start connecting with people. Are there any benefits of hitting the pause button at this point and taking stock before jumping in? Today we're going to be looking at the steps we need to take to ensure that we don't get caught in a cycle of making the same mistakes, with a similar looking pattern that we've been running for a while? In Jerusalem, what you see and what is true are two different things. Maps divide the walled Old City into four quarters, yet that division doesn't reflect the reality of mixed and diverse neighbourhoods. Beyond the crush and frenzy of its major religious sites, much of the Old City remains little known to visitors, its people overlooked and their stories untold. Nine Quarters of Jerusalem lets the communities of the Old City speak for themselves. Ranging through ancient past and political present, it evokes the city's depth and cultural diversity. Matthew Teller's highly original ‚biography‘ features the Old City's Palestinian and Jewish communities, but also spotlights its Indian and African populations, its Greek and Armenian and Syriac cultures, its downtrodden Dom Gypsy families and its Sufi mystics. It discusses the sources of Jerusalem's holiness and the ideas – often startlingly secular – that have shaped lives within its walls. It is an evocation of place through story, led by the voices of Jerusalemites. Matthew Teller is an Author, Travel Writer and Documentary-Maker. He writes and broadcasts for the BBC and other media outlets around the world. His latest book Nine Quarters of Jerusalem: A New Biography of the Old City was published in March 2022 (Profile Books Ltd, 9781788169189) Viola Raheb, Theologian is Project Manager at Pro Oriente Foundation Vienna and Senior Fellow at Bruno Kreisky Forum

Thunder bolts and lightning, very very…frustrating! This episode is proof that three women failed by the system uniting really can cause a storm! Alongside being an award-winning Documentary Maker, Creative Director, Author, and Yoga Instructor, Hana Walker- Brown also has the patience of a Saint! This legendary lady persevered with this absolutely chaotic episode in which we battled the elements. A terrible storm caused internet problems, with Dawn getting booted off Zoom multiple times! There are a lot of stops and starts (hence slightly longer length) and a fair few really irritating Discord notification noises - too quiet for Laura to notice with her hearing problems, but loud enough to be picked up on the recording - APOLOGIES! At least it shows that our ‘We are ADHDAF' Community Platform is popping! :DNever has there been such a catastrophic and brilliant interview! As contradictory as the traits of ADHD and Autism; both of which Hana signified in her neurodivergent screening process. Diagnosed with ADHD at 31; she may pursue an Autism assessment in the future once the first diagnosis has sunk in. Like so many of us, Hana is extremely hard on herself. At university, she had such extreme burnout, she was hospitalised! Misdiagnosed and prescribed anxiety and depression meds time and time again. Through raised awareness, she finally recognised her struggles as ADHD symptoms, only to be dismissed by her GP who stated, ‘a lot of women think they have this!' If you are listening lady - SHAME ON YOU! Hana has been waiting two years for NHS ADHD therapy. This episode is rammed full of insight, pearls, camaraderie, compassion and validation. So do follow the wonderful Hana's lead and persevere with this slightly disjointed conversation. It truly is a special one! From at first viewing ADHD as her Superpower to then her kryptonite and now finding self forgiveness. This is one hell of a ride... Enjoy! THANK YOU SO MUCH HANA! We hope to join forces again and cause more storms very soon! If you've found this podcast helpful and you are in a position to do so, please help us continue to help others by joining our Community. Can you imagine starting over your career age 65 years old? The idea seems pretty daunting, but for Melissa Davey it was something she actively strove to do. She left her corporate job of 20 years and became a documentary maker. Her first documentary is called Beyond 60 This documentary centers around the lives of women that society has disregarded and flips that narrative on its head. The women in this documentary run the gamut of expertise, from a fine artist who has worked with Lady Gaga to a veterinarian who swam across the English Channel at the tender age of 62 This has to be one of my favourite interviews to date, Melissa is so interesting and I totally want to be her when I grow up.
