On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we have the pleasure of sitting down with two remarkable entrepreneurs, Shante Frazier and Lauren Mitchell, the co-founders of WellCapped. In our conversation, we delved into the origins of their groundbreaking service, the hurdles they've overcome, and their ambitious vision for the future of the beauty industry. Their journey is one of innovation, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of redefining beauty standards. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. WellCapped: The Genesis of a Game-Changer Shante and Lauren's venture, WellCapped, is akin to Rent the Runway, but for wigs and hair extensions. This novel concept was born from a simple suggestion by Shante's aunt and has since blossomed into a business that caters to a diverse clientele seeking quality and affordability. Their personal experiences and corporate backgrounds have fueled their mission to democratize high-end wigs and hair extensions, making them accessible to all. The beauty industry has seen a surge in the use of wigs and hair extensions, with technological advancements blurring the lines between natural and styled hair. Celebrities and influencers are challenging traditional beauty norms, and WellCapped is at the forefront of this shift, empowering customers to experiment with their looks without the hefty price tag. The Entrepreneurial Leap Shante recounts the poignant moment that transformed her hesitation into conviction. The idea of a rental service for wigs and hair extensions wasn't just a business opportunity; it was a chance to support individuals undergoing chemotherapy by offering free memberships and support—a testament to the personal significance of WellCapped. Transitioning from corporate America to entrepreneurship is no small feat. Shante and Lauren share their motivations and the challenges they faced along the way. "When you see your customers telling you how our company has changed their lives, it gives you the fuel that you need to keep going on the bad days.” – Lauren Mitchell of WellCapped Eventually, Lauren's layoff became a catalyst for her commitment to WellCapped, while Shante reflected on the naivety and learning curve of starting a new venture. The Journey of Fundraising and Resilience Raising funds for a startup is a daunting task, but Shante and Lauren's determination was unwavering. They focused on aligning with investors who shared their vision, rather than convincing skeptics. Their commitment to excellence and continuous improvement has been a driving force behind their success. Their participation in the Techstars program marked a pivotal chapter for WellCapped. The intensive accelerator experience honed their brand and helped shift customer perceptions about renting wigs—a concept that is now gaining traction and acceptance. Shante emphasized the growing trend of viewing hair as a fashion accessory. WellCapped taps into this trend by offering a cost-effective way for consumers to express themselves through their hair, fostering a culture of experimentation and self-expression. To hear more from Shante & Lauren and how they raised WellCapped from the ground up, download and listen to this episode. Bio Shante Frazier Shante is a recent MBA graduate from NYU Stern, where she specialized in Marketing and Strategy. She graduated from Spelman College in 2012 with a BA in Economics. Prior to coming to Stern, Shante worked at Progressive Insurance for 3 years in the Pricing and Competitive Intelligence departments while also serving as an officer in the Ohio Army National Guard. Writer and TedX Speaker Stacey Heale shares 'honest conversations on how to rebuild your life after hard times'… and we are so grateful to this legendary lady for her honesty and insights in this wonderful conversation. At 43, Stacey is freshly diagnosed with ADHD. The Mother of two, and jack of all trades is just as chaotic as we are! Part of our ADHDAF mission is to eradicate the shame around the symptoms and struggles we battle daily and to celebrate the messy ‘too-muchness' and rebellion so many of us relate to. Which is why we ADORE this blether and this woman so much! We are no strangers to the shame of our ineptitude at 'adulting' adequately, and alongside experiencing this; Stacey gives us her perspective of Motherhood with the neurodevelopmental condition. How it feels when the chaos is no longer just your own, as it also affects your children.  ADHD Medication and self compassion post diagnosis has improved Stacey's life enormously.  THANK YOU SO MUCH STACEY, we can't wait to read your book! WE'RE SO EXCITED TO GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD! With ep. 42's release date falling on Valentine's Day,  we decided to explore the date dedicated to romantic love through an ADHD lens, from our own perspectives, and share findings from far more reputable resources.  Valentine's Day ain't all roses, is it?! Whether you're single or attached; marrying societal pressures and ADHD can make for one hell of a toxic relationship!  Speaking of which, if you haven't already heard our deep dive into ADHD and 'Romantic' Relationships, have a listen to Episode 8. In this blether we explore the growth that ADHD identification has brought. Our Dawny is no longer desperate to be liked on dates, and instead what matters is if she likes them! Similarly, Laura laments on previous performative behaviour... far more hopeless than romantic! We talk a bit about sex, and it's so cringe I'm still wondering if we should cut that bit out! LOLS ...but we've purposely left the bit about Lily Allen's 'Womanizer' toy in, in the hope she might send us a couple! ;)In all seriousness, Valentine's Day can be triggering, and statistics show that this day can hurt so many.  We are so grateful for the brave and wise words of legends like Clementine Ford & Florence Given. We only wish we'd heard them sooner! But thank goodness, the time's they are a-changin'... We've learnt the hard way that the most important relationship in life is the one you have with yourself, but self love isn't easy, and ADHD can make it even harder. Non-binary neurodivergent counsellor Katie Harrison LPC, based in Misouri is a total ledge! Their unique perpective as all of the above enables Katie to identify neurodvergence in clients the world over.  Please note, that identification is not the same as diagnosis! Once identified, Katie helps clients navigate the adult ADHD diagnosis process in their country. Which comes with added difficulties when you are non-cisgendered.It's been said that ADHDers are highly intuitive, Katie argues that the so called ‘intuition' of people who are Assigned Female At Birth; especially those with late diagnosed ADHD is actually due to hyper-vigilance; a trauma response. Gender is a social construct, and in this insightful episode Katie shares a link between the LGBTQIA+ community and neurodivergence that their work has uncovered.Katie was pushed outside of the classroom, which made them feel unacceptable to society.  This lead to not being defined by social constructs… existing on the parameters of society.   THANK YOU to the AMAZING Katie Harrison LPC for educating us and sharing their late ADHD diagnosis journey! After last week's tear jerker, be prepared to cry again, but this time with laughter! LA  based Comedian/Actor Merril Davis, originally from Miami, is one of the funniest people we have had the absolute pleasure to interview! Like us, Merrill basically has a neon flashing ADHDAF sign on her forehead, and is as perplexed as we are as to how they all went unnoticed.  Alongside the words that haunt our dreams such as 'could try harder', or 'you're too much'; we discovered Merrill through another one of 'those phrases'...  Merril 'means well'. This was the title of her incredible standup show at The Edinburgh Fringe last year, in which she shared her experiences of undiagnosed ADHD in 19 shows to rave reviews. She connected with many late diagnosed ADHDers who felt validated by her humour and unapologetic unmasking.  Merrill was labelled 'slow' in convent school, but unstructured college life was when her struggles really surfaced. Back to back job sackings, twice by  her own father! Her ADHD symptoms even led to a one night stay in jail. She discovered a therapist who immediately pointed out the obvious in 2016 and was diagnosed with Combined Type ADHD.  Merrill is happy to finally have 'the magic potion' to help her manage life better.   At times she even feels positive about having ADHD; but then come low moments when she feels heartbroken by the time and friendships lost to ADHD tax. This interview is the perfect episode for Blue Monday week; Merrill made our faces hurt with laughter whilst helping heal our wounds with validation! THANK YOU SO MUCH MERRILL, YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND! ENJOY! xxIf you've found this podcast helpful & are in a position to do so, please help us continue to help others by joining our Community. My intention when giving the information is for there to be a dialogue based on the information.” [4:30] “When you say ‘I don't see color,' you're dismissing all of the people that do… My approach is to open up minds so that the ignorance won't be so wilful” [7:05]“I'm not DIY in the ‘I want to do everything myself way'; I'm DIY in the ‘I want my input to be considered way.” [10:19] “I was listening to the new Da Baby record…He has a cool energy.” [14:28] “You can pull inspiration from anywhere” [15:25] “I'm very into music. I have a great ear. I feel like I know enough about how things sound to know what notes I can't hit…” [17:26] “I took one hip-hop class and I wasn't even the best one! I just know that I don't consider myself to be a dance so it's funny when people are like, “You're such a good dancer.” [18:55] “[My sisters] are just really talented people. Involving them just makes the most sense.” [20:00] “I don't have to be as critical of being a good music because my standards are really high.” [25:08] “My competitiveness, my musicality? That's kind of instilled.” [26:12] Haviah Mighty's 2019 tour is coming to Halifax (October 26), Mississauga (October 27), Edmonton (November 7), Calgary (November 8), and Brampton (November 30). He found that seal fat was very helpful. The cousins who hunted - in the beginning, they would bring us neat little packets of seal...but towards the end, they were just leaving, like, half a seal in a bucket.  [5:40] “He was always embarrassed that I wasn't a lady. And I was always like, 'You taught me to buck wood and change oil. I don't remember any tea parties.'" [7:00] “I find [that] if I try to write to an outline or if I write to a plan, my muse gets inhibited.” [14:14] “I was realizing how few years I have left if I'm writing a book about every five years. Okay, there are books I won't be able to write.” [21:30] "I also don't have a lot of anxiety about what people think about me. I remember being very concerned about that. And that was a hard-fought lesson.” [7:40] “It was also really important to me to be a strong loner.” [8:45] “Anytime I have made a platform for myself that is based on anger or taking up space to be vocal about sexual assault or harassment or anything like that, I have left that space feeling tremendously guilty.” [9:20] “I feel like everybody has a little invisible suitcase with them and in that suitcase is their anger.” [11:17] “Now that I've gotten more powerful just by virtue of getting older, I'm less angry. Even though there's so much to be angry about, but I'm not walking around the world furious in the way that I kind of used to be.” [12:35] This is when I learned to ask for forgiveness, not permission: When I asked my mom if i could sleep over in an orchard in Grimsby Ontario with a bunch of boys and my mom was, like, absolutely-the-fuck-not.” [15:35] “I've stopped thinking about happiness as a state or a promised land or a quest. I've started thinking about it as a fog that just kind of comes or goes away…” [22:30] “Something out there does not want me to have a stable place to live...Something out there wants me to get used to be transient.” [26:45] CREDITS: Cavern of Secrets is hosted by Lauren Mitchell. Georgia Webber, writer and illustrator, comes to the Cavern of Secrets to talk about what it means when you can't express yourself, learning to draw again, and allowing the possibility that someone will say ‘yes' and help you. Georgia's graphic memoir, Dumb, is about what it means to become voiceless and how it changes you. Our favourite moments: “If there's something that calls for my voice to be raised at all in a really loud way, I can push it if I want to and I most of the time really want to. But it's a bad idea.” [4:43] “I had always wanted to make comics but I didn't feel like I was good enough to start. Which is a terrible trap to be caught in.” [5:34] I hit send. I woke up the next morning and I felt - god, I'm gonna sound like such an asshole right now - I felt the closest thing I can to enlightened.” [10:05] It's much harder for us to accept something that changes constantly and it's much harder for the wide broad us to accept complication” [14:55] “It's also fascinating to collaborate with someone and have her voice at the centre of it but she can't see what I'm doing. She's exercising a massive amount of trust…” [17:00] “This idea of disability as a shift in health paradigm as the rest of the world to accept is something that I'm grappling with” [24:00] “I could see all the accommodations that were being made for people who had those different needs and being in that space and sharing it with them was not a detriment to my experience in any way” [28:05] CREDITS: Cavern of Secrets is hosted by Lauren Mitchell. Sarah Hagi, writer and queen of Twitter @geeklylonglegs, comes to the Cavern of Secrets to talk about the Garfield restaurant, the Blackest cartoons and how to have fun (again) as a writer. “It was intended to be a joke piece where I was like, yeah, Bugs Bunny is black.” Our favourite moments: “In a lot of ways, editors only hit me up when it's like ‘ooh, we need a little spice here' which is annoying.” [9:55] The thing about when you make something your brand. And I don't know how it happened but I associated myself with Garfield but it happened somehow. And to this day, people are always sending me something to do with Garfield. Like, people who do not know me. And it feels great But again, I'm like, “Oh no is this why I'm single?” [10:50] “I was walking down Bloor with my friend and I was really sad and crying, then I was like “What's Garfield doing on that storefront?” [11:59] “I spent my whole life thinking, “Julia Stiles? She's got RHYTHM. Only to realize now that she cannot dance” [21:37] “I didn't go to my prom. I went to Dairy Queen.” [23:51] CREDITS: Cavern of Secrets is hosted by Lauren Mitchell.
