Today we are joined by Dr. Andrew Fleming. Dr Fleming is a clinical psychologist, founder of The Seattle Clinic, and a member of the clinical faculty at the University of Washington. He completed his doctoral study in child clinical psychology at the University of Washington, his internship in child & adolescent psychology at the UCLA Medical Center, and fellowship at the UW School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. His research was focused on improving interventions for teens, young adults, and families affected by ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, eating disorders, and suicidal behavior. Recently his focus has shifted to couples and families and he has just recently moved on from the Seattle Clinic.
To end their "Politics" cycle, Madeline, Julian and Emilio put a different spin on their Close Up episode format by looking at three different actors' portrayal of one real-life political figure, former President Richard M. Nixon. The group welcomes in another Richard - Madeline's dad! - a retired history teacher and Watergate buff, to give these films and performances some important historical context. They discuss Oliver Stone's sprawling biopic 'Nixon' from 1995, the several stages of Nixon's political and private life depicted with impressive realism by Anthony Hopkins, and what is gained and lost when a film has such a wide scope. Next is 'Dick', Andrew Fleming's 1999 farcical reimagining of the Watergate scandal with Dan Hedaya as Nixon, where the group discusses the importance of mining politicians for humor. They close their discussion with a look at Ron Howard's 2008 film 'Frost/Nixon', featuring Frank Langella as Nixon, and consider where and when its helpful for creative liberties to be taken to depict real-life people and events. When the last 36 inhabitants of St Kilda, 40 miles west of the Scottish Hebrides, were evacuated in 1930, the archipelago at ‘the edge of the world' lost its permanent population after five millennia. It has long been accepted that the islanders' failure to adapt to the modern world was its demise. Andrew Fleming overturns the traditional view. Unafraid of highlighting dark times, he shows how they sacrificed their reputation as an uncorrupted, ideal society to embrace and exploit the tourist trade. Creating a prestigious tweed, exporting the ancestors of today's Hebridean sheep, the islanders gained access to consumer goods and learned how to play politics to their advantage. The Gravity of Feathers: Fame, Fortune and the Story of St Kilda (Birlinn, 2024) by Dr. Andrew Fleming tells the absorbing and eventful story of St Kilda from earliest times, up to the evacuation and its aftermath. Previously untapped sources and fresh insights bring to life the personalities, feelings, attitudes and rich culture of the islanders themselves, as well as the numerous outsiders who engaged with the remote island community. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Zero and Wiz DO NOT RECOMMEND The Craft The one surprising thing about The Craft, a 90s teen horror drama that has gone on to be a Halloween teen classic, is how bland and generic a large amount of the movie is. The film mashes a standard high school outsider story with a power mad style morality tale mixed with threadbare teeny bopper fashion and character depth to a concept that, honestly, wasn't that interesting to begin with. Let's start with what makes this film slightly different: a group of four girls who go to a catholic school start a coven of witches and gain supernatural powers. They use these powers on people who hurt and anger them. Honestly, it's kind of boring. However, you can do something interesting with this. So what does The Craft do? Well, Sarah (a wooden Robin Tunney) uses it to make a person who started a rumor about her fall for her deeply. Bonnie uses it to clear her scars from a burn injury. Rochelle (Rachel True) does a spell that…makes a racist bully bald. Utterly…riveting. The exception I would make is Nancy (Fairuza Balk) whose desires are obscured through most of the film. Now, you do learn something through Balk's performance: Nancy has a pretty damn tough home life which she is ignored and abused by a groan inducingly stereotypically bad step father and lives in a trailer (and yet, she can afford to go to a prep school?). But this leads to a storyline where…well, you can already guess what happens. The film is as formulaic as it comes to where this would actually be home as a Nickelodeon or Disney Channel film. Except that things get surprisingly dark. Even before the spells and conjuring spirits, there are scenes involving suicide, some blood and violence. And there's an attempted rape scene as well. Now, I get this was made during a time where this was trivialized…but not even the next scene the victim tries to save her attempted rapist. I know this sounds like I'm nitpicking, but everything else is so damn bland in this movie that these moments stick out horribly. Literally everything from the characters and story to the actors in this movie are so lifeless and boring. With the exception of Fairuza Balk. Balk is really the only actor in this film that feels like she trying something. Then again, her character is the only one with a personality that is entertaining. But Balk is playing a campy, over the top villain and it feels like she's relishing chewing scenery in every shot…especially when she turns into the ultimate villain. But Balk can't save this cornball teen horror film from being as dull as it is. Everything else in the film is bland and dry leading to a movie that mostly runs on autopilot.

In this episode, we're delving into the comedic chaos of "The In-Laws," exploring both the beloved 1979 original and its 2003 remake. The original film, directed by Arthur Hiller, stars Peter Falk and Alan Arkin as two future in-laws caught in a whirlwind of international espionage and hilarious misadventures. Fast-forward to 2003, and Andrew Fleming reimagines this classic, casting Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in a similar tale of pre-wedding jitters mixed with undercover operations. We'll compare the comedic styles of each film, how the humor has evolved over the decades, and discuss whether the remake holds up to the original's legacy. Tune in as we unpack the antics, the laughs, and the unexpected bonds that make "The In-Laws" a comedic encounter of the familial kind.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Dec. 2 at 6 a.m. CT: Kraft Heinz says it's bringing dairy-free macaroni and cheese to the U.S. for the first time. The company says the new recipe has the same creamy texture and flavor of the beloved 85-year-old original but replaces dairy with ingredients like fava bean protein and coconut oil powder. Kraft NotMac&Cheese will be rolled out to U.S. stores over the next few months. It was developed in collaboration with Not Co., a Chicago startup that makes plant-based milk, burgers and other products. Kraft and Not Co. formed a joint venture last year and have also developed plant-based cheese slices and mayonnaise. Electric vehicle sales are expected to hit a record 9% of all passenger vehicles in the U.S. this year, according to Atlas Public Policy. That will be up from 7.3% of new car sales in 2022. This will be the first year U.S. EV sales surpass 1 million, and they will probably reach between 1.3 million and 1.4 million cars. Electric vehicle prices in the U.S. have been falling. Although the numbers show significant progress for electrification in the US, the nation is lagging behind countries like China, Germany, and Norway. The energy used by cars and their CO2 emissions could have dropped by over 30% in the past decade if not for the world's growing taste for SUVs, a new report from the Global Fuel Economy Initiative suggests. Electric vehicles are a solution, but large gas-powered cars are incredibly popular, especially in the U.S., and their overall market share keeps growing. Large SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Toyota Sequoia, or Nissan Armada have highway fuel efficiency of just 28, 24, and 19 miles per gallon, respectively. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. life expectancy rose last year, but it still isn't close to what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. It was up by more than a year in 2022, after plunging two straight years at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's now 77 years, 6 months — about what it was two decades ago. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the numbers on Wednesday. Researchers say the rise was mainly due the waning pandemic. The snapshot statistic is considered one of the most important measures of the health of the U.S. population. PHOENIX (AP) — The United States is ill-prepared to ensure housing and care for the growing ranks of America's older people. That's the conclusion of a new report being released Thursday by Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies. Without enough government assistance many older adults will have to forgo needed care or rely on family and friends for assistance. Many will become homeless. Officials at the center say more governmental assistance could better help the upsurge of older Americans who are baby boomers born after World War II. Creative ideas are needed to help house people with fixed or dwindling incomes. NEW YORK (AP) — The COVID-19 pandemic upended the work habits of people around the world, with millions working from home, at least for part of their week. Workers have returned in waves back to the office on some days, but navigating that transition is a significant hurdle for employers and workers alike. And many simply don't want to restore the pre-COVID status quo. Top factors behind this resistance include a sense of losing flexibility or throwing off a better work-life balance, as well as often lengthy and costly commutes. Two surveys conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago give a glimpse into the challenges and tensions that arrive with return to office plans. INDIAN ROCKS BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It's been a record-breaking year for sea turtles in Florida. Just as they have for millions of years, the turtles have crawled onto beaches, digging pits in the sand to lay their eggs. Florida's preliminary count shows more than 133,840 loggerhead turtle nests and 76,500 green turtle nests, breaking records set years ago. Other southeastern U.S. states also report high numbers. But only one in 1,000 hatchlings lives to adulthood and climate change is threatening their species as beaches disappear under rising seas. Hotter sand makes more females, and the hatchlings are smaller and slower. Experts say their future remains ominous. LONDON (AP) — The British Antarctic Survey says that one of the world's largest icebergs is drifting beyond Antarctic waters after being grounded for more than three decades. The iceberg known as A23a split from the Antarctic's Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986. But it became stuck to the ocean floor and had remained for many years in the Weddell Sea. The iceberg is about three times the size of New York City and more than twice the size of Greater London. Andrew Fleming from the British Antarctic Survey told the BBC on Friday that the iceberg has been drifting for the past year and now appears to be picking up speed and moving past the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula helped by wind and ocean currents. ELMSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A growing number of states are working to keep food out of landfills over concerns the waste is taking up too much space and posing environmental problems. Globally, about a third of food is wasted. In the United States, it's even higher, at 40%. California and some others have passed laws requiring food waste to be composted while others including New York require supermarkets and other businesses to redirect food to food pantries. They argue it saves landfill space, cuts methane emissions and also gives poor families more choices. New York says it already has recycled or donated 5 million pounds of leftover food. The oil and gas sector, one of the major emitters of planet-warming gases, will need a rapid and substantial overhaul for the world to avoid even worse extremes fueled by human-caused climate change. That's according to a report released Thursday. The International Energy Agency says the current investment of $800 billion a year for the oil and gas sector will need to be slashed in half and emissions need to fall by 60% to give the world a fighting chance to meet its climate goals. It also found that the sector's investment into clean technologies like solar and wind only account for 1% of the global total. WENDEN, Ariz. (AP) — Worries about future water supplies from ancient aquifers are bubbling up in western rural Arizona. Some neighbors complain that their backyard wells have dried up since an Emirati agribusiness began farming alfalfa nearby. One farmer worries that state officials someday may try to divert the area's groundwater for Phoenix's future needs. Experts say tensions are inevitable as companies in climate-challenged countries such as the United Arab Emirates look to faraway places like rural Arizona for water and land they need to cultivate forage material and commodities. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises.

On today's episode, we're heading over to St. Bernard's Academy for homeroom, cast some spells to get our deepest wishes, and we're also going to invoke the spirit, while we revisit the 90s teen horror flick, The Craft (1996). This movie was directed by Andrew Fleming, and was co-written by Peter Filardi and Andrew Fleming. This movie stars Robin Tunney (Empire Records, Prison Break), Fairuza Balk (The Worst Witch, Return to Oz), Neve Campbell (Scream, Wild Things), and Rachel True (Nowhere, Embrace of the Vampire). Also included in the cast are Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale, As Good As It Gets), Breckin Meyer (Clueless, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare), and Cliff DeYoung (Dr. Giggles, Shock Treatment). This movie has its highs and lows, for sure. If anything, it's an example of a horror movie that explores the idea and world of witchcraft, and is an example of a decent mid-90s horror flick. This movie is also an absolute sleepover movie (especially for young women and probably queer folks), so it has a certain place in the hearts of the fans that grew up with it. It's worth a watch if you've never seen it, and for a horror fan, definitely should be on the list to watch, as well.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Dick is a 1999 American comedy film directed by Andrew Fleming from a script he wrote with Sheryl Longin. It is a comic reimagining of the Watergate scandal which ended the presidency of Richard Nixon and features several cast members from Saturday Night Live and The Kids in the Hall.[3] Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams star as Betsy and Arlene, two warm-hearted but unworldly 15-year-old friends, who – through various arbitrary circumstances – become the legendary "Deep Throat" figure who played a key role in bringing down the presidency of Nixon (played by Dan Hedaya). At the time of the movie's release, the real identity of Deep Throat was not yet known to the public. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_(film)

Paul Klein and Jasmine Valentine from Filmhounds Magazine join Flixwatcher to review Paul's choice The Craft. The Craft is a 1996 teenage supernatural horror film directed by Andrew Fleming. It stars Robin Tunney as Sarah, a newcomer to the high school with unusual powers. She befriends a group of outcasts who practice witchcraft led by trailer-trash Nancy (Fairuza Balk), burns victim Bonnie (Neve Campbell) and Rochelle (Rachel True) who is racially abused by Laura (Christine Taylor). Nancy invites Sarah to join their coven and she becomes “the fourth” to complete the wind-water-earth-fire circle and give them supernatural powers. Popular school jock Chris spreads false rumours about Sarah after their date and this leads to the coven casting individual powerful spells that each have negative consequences. Scores for recommendability for The Craft reflected the mixed tone of the film - swinging wildly from teen drama to straight up horror. Lower scores for repeat viewing and engagement give an overall rating of 3.43. Boil, boil, toil, and double trouble! Horror month turns witchy with two flicks about the occult. Representing the arthouse is Robert Eggers' debut feature film for A24, The Witch. Representing the mainstream is the 1996 movie that made the jocks think twice about messing with the goths, Andrew Fleming's The Craft. MNAM's spooky season continues with writer Carly Garber (The Goldbergs) joining to discuss the teen horror film THE CRAFT starring Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell and Rachel True. The 1996 film deals with a group of Catholic school students who form a secret witch coven, casting spells to fulfill their desires. The Andrew Fleming-directed thriller was a modest hit at the time of release, but has since grown a cult following among generations of teenage viewers. Our discussion with Carly veers into a near record-setting number of diversions into such non-occult topics as Richie Rich, LA real estate, TBS, Swimfan, Nick at Nite, local weathermen, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, Hackers, The Try Guys, Roald Dahl, Kingpin, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, and much much more!

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 5, The Box, which originally aired on October 15, 2013 and was written by Rob Rosell and directed by Andrew Fleming. Here's a quick recap of the episode:This episode reveals what Nick (... and Jess and Winston) would do with the money he inherits after his Dad's death. Schmidt is still soul searching after losing Cece and Elizabeth and wonders if he's a good person. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Band Posters - In Nick's bedroom there are a number of band posters we saw this episode: The Black KeysCirca SurviveWe didn't talk about, but also saw the following posters:Coachella 2010 Lineup Poster - Founded in 1999, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is an annual festival held east of Los Angeles in Indio, California. B38 by Pass Kontrol Poster - Pass Kontrol is an “art collective” community of friends who dedicated its energetic album, B38, to one of the greatest buslines that runs from Ridgewood to Downtown Brooklyn, NYC. Heathcliff - When Schmidt is leaving the bar with Nick, the “pickled” bar patron calls him Heathcliff. Additional Pop Culture References such as:YOLO - When Schmidt was wreaking havoc in the school, he yelled “YOLO” when he was being carried out. "YOLO" is an acronym for "you only live once" that became popular internet slang in 2012. The concept of “YOLO” is to live life to its fullest extent. This episode we discuss who is Most Likely To visit someone in the hospital after calling 911 for them, make a powerpoint presentation to get money back from a friend, help someone pay their bills, and spend money on quirky trivial things, like mall photos. We also cover Nick and Schmidt at the bar as our “Schmidtism”. For “Not in the 2020s” we mention how Schmidt described Elizabeth as “regular” and Nick spoke about how “girls don't listen” and what he said men want. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we highlight Nick's note about equality and not doing jury duty or paying his taxes until gay marriage was legal everywhere, which it now is in the U.S.A. We also explore the careers of Jillian Aremenante (Eileen) and Kimrie Lewis (Keysha), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Steve Agee (Outside Dave - Previously discussed in S2E17), Jon Lovitz (Rabbi Feiglin), Derek Waters (Mike), Connor Rosen (Boy), James Wellington (Gordon), David Hutchison (Rabbi Julio), and Marty Ingels (Pickled Patron). We also discuss the continuation of baby animals on Jess's checks and how the song in the background when Nick is drinking at the bar is a She & Him song (which Zooey Deschanel is a part of). Neither of us found the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Tango / Waltz - Nick mentions both of these classical dances when angrily ranting to Jess that he can also try to change her. These dances are often confused with each other; the Waltz is a ballroom dance from the 18th century, while the Tango is a variation of the Flamenco style of dance only dating back to the 1880s. The main difference between the two is the speed at which the dance is conducted.Shema Yisrael - When Schmidt saves the bike messenger he exclaims that they should rejoice in song and begins singing Shema Yisrael, which is a Jewish prayer. This prayer is typically part of a twice daily recitation and is typically taught to children to be said before sleeping. It has also been referenced and used in other TV shows as the last words for the character. This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Winston and Kelly rated this episode a 7.5/10 and her favorite character was Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 6!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
