1973's Slither was the directorial debut of Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin, My Girl) and the screenwriting debut for W.D. Richter (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Big Trouble In Little China). In the freewheeling comedic thriller, James Caan goes on the road looking for a stash of embezzled money with Peter Boyle, Louise Lasser and Sally Kellerman in tow. Famously, Caan was quoted saying he took the role for the money and had little understanding of the story. Dan and Vicky discuss the film along with lots of recently seen including Nosferatu, The Front Room, Shudder's doc series Horror's Greatest, Better Man, Leigh Wannell's Wolfman, Trim Season and The Brutalist. *Sound issues exist in this episode. It's nearing the end of the year but we're just in time to celebrate our 100th episode!! Plus, what psychiatric wards are really like, Louise Lasser is the gem of the film, and a SAW and Christmas filled wind down as we begin to close out the year that was 2024. Thanksgiving's right around the corner, and David and Justus are celebrating with this obscure 80's Thanksgiving slasher. It might have three different official titles and be really hard to find on the internet, but that can't be because it's a bad movie, right? Set the table and say grace with David, Justus, gigachad slasher Terry, Condom Salesman Ted Raimi, and Sloppy Drunk Single Mom. That's not cranberry sauce, it's a delicious Thanksgiving themed installment of the Greatest Movie Ever Made! Blood Rage (1987) is directed by John Grissmer and stars Louise Lasser, Mark Soper, Marianne Kanter, Julie Gordon, and Jayne Bentzen. Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio
Are Hollywood's youngest stars in any less danger now than those of past eras? We pose this question to Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman's Claudia Lamb. At age 11 she was cast as Mary's daughter Heather Hartman in the groundbreaking Norman Lear soap parody. Claudia offers a front row view to her traumatic life as a 70s child star, at the mercy of her abusive parents and insight into how she gnawed through their shackles to pursue a radio journalism career and become a champion for today's child actors.Claudia was a gourmet meal ticket to her criminally exploitative parents who squandered all her money as she cranked out hundreds of commercials and print ads as a toddler who was shoved into the spotlight and dragged by her angry and brutal mother to audition after audition.Claudia candidly conveys the extent of the violence and terror inflicted by her narcissistically cruel mother as Claudia's labor, throughout her childhood supported the entire family while alienating her five brothers. Her talent and intelligence branded her as a go-to for commercial producers, where, as a stand-by, she frequently replaced the principal. Then at the age of 11, after being pummeled by her mother for a poor math grade, (working kids needed to keep their grades above a C average) Claudia was dragged to a cattle-call populated by every chubby, frizzy haired 13 year old in Hollywood. Claudia, a scrawny, pigtailed 11 year old nailed the reading and was instantly cast as Heather Hartman where she treasured her three years on the set of Norman Lear's outrageous, unprecedented soap satire.Claudia tells of marathon filming sessions, (five episodes a week) with no cue cards or teleprompters. (Louise Lasser would scribble her lines on the kitchen table!) She celebrates the immense talents of Mary Kay Place, Martin Mull and Fred Willard, and shares fabulous anecdotes about Donny and Jimmy Osmond (The Donny & Marie Show filmed next door) and how Claudia was nearly crushed by a mob of fans who spotted her chatting up some Osmonds and jumped a fence to get in on that action.Claudia is frank in her assessment of the adults who let her down as she endured her mother's abuse. Her bruises were in clear view of the wardrobe department. At the age of 18, Claudia put Hollywood in her rear view and became an award winning journalist who now speaks to parents about the reality and dangers posed to children by show business.Weezy offers a supporting view, recommending Demi Lovato's new documentary on Hulu and Disney + called Child Star. Fritz is captivated by the Hulu series adaptation of Patrick Radden Keefe's best-seller about “The Troubles” in Ireland, Say Nothing. And Claudia weighs in on recs with a doc called Casa Bonita Mi Amor on Paramount +.Path Points of Interest:Claudia Lamb on IMDBClaudia Lamb on WikipediaClaudia's BlogClaudia Lamb on BlueskyClaudia Lamb on Twitter/XClaudia Lamb on InstagramChild Star on Hulu and Disney+Say Nothing on HuluCasa Bonita Mi Amor

*** EXPLICIT LANGUAGE & WARNING *** This podcast video includes discussions of topics such as rape, religious guilt, victim-blaming, and alcohol-induced blackouts. LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED. Laverne wakes up from a black-out drunk evening on top of an aircraft carrier with her clothing torn and disheveled. On her way off the boat, she gets saluted by the sailors on board for reasons she cannot recall. By the time they "toot the big horn" at her, she suspects the worst. Running to the nearest church for confession, she asks if she can still make it into heaven in light of her "bad deeds." The priest recommends a sabbatical at a nunnery as an act of contrition. But unlike stuffy old monasteries, the silent nuns who worship here break up the monotony with pottery, football, roller skating, and pickle smuggling. Laverne causes chaos at every turn, until she causes one of the nuns (Louise Lasser) to break her vow of silence. Through her connection to this struggling nun, Laverne gets one last try at being a good girl -- if she can contritely ask for forgiveness from the Big Man Upstairs. Look, we're not going to lie - we rip this episode a new one. On pod, it gets rough, until Chris goes off on a Dark Souls tangent (and revenge movie recommendation list), Lisa tries not to get flashbacks to Catholic school, and ultimately we give Monastery Story a once-over with a sledgehammer.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Bryan and Dave dive head-first into the wildly inconsistent shit show that is Blood Rage. Marvel at the utterly deranged performance from Louise Lasser, thrill to the low budget gory special effects that are way better than the movie deserves, cringe like you've never cringed before to the movie's many intimate and sexy scenes that encapsulate the early 1980's like few other horror movies. It's a real journey. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jwQ11osTWw --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

In this 197th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we discuss the WHO's proposed amendments to their 2005 International Health Regulations. It's not good, as lawyer Philipp Kruse, and John Campbell, have already pointed out. These amendments, should they be approved, will mark the end of science, of democracy, and of justice. Then we discuss complexity, how to respond to complex situations, and Israel and Hamas. Our reflexes are being used to control us; life is being presented as a multiple-choice test, but we can resist that test. Finally, check out the progressive stack on the New Democratic Party convention in Canada. Another mind bending episode. Luana Anders is our pal on the flipside who generates the guest list. In this case it was someone who passed away recently, musician Gary Wright. Gary was famous for his song "Dream Weaver." He worked with George Harrison and others in a long career. Jennifer did a private session with him in his home a few years ago, and he wanted to talk about his journey to the flipside. He talked about who greeted him there, and what his experience was like. Gary was a fan of the Indian pandit Yogananda. His book "Autobiography of a Yogi" changed Gary's life because he said it inspired the song Dream Weaver. We've chatted with Yogananda before, I asked him questions about his teacher and other events in his life. It's a mind bending thing he says when I asked him "What do I tell friends of mine in India about the fact that we've spoken to you?" He said "They have me on a pedestal. You need to have me in your heart to speak to me." He answered that question before I asked it by taking Jennifer's hand. Luana then took us to "a concert." I had been asked about a number of people who passed recently, so I wondered if this "concert" was so we could talk to them. Indeed, she brought forth Tony Bennett. Tony mentioned the time that we met backstage on the tonight show, talked about my healthy head of hair - which allowed me to talk about the black wig he was wearing for that show in the 1980's. Later his son switched it to a grayer one - (or he stopped wearing one, I don't know) but it was funny because he brought it up. Then we spoke to Walter Matthau. Indeed, I worked as his dialog coach on the Charles Grodin film Movers and Shakers, and he refers to our long conversations. That brought forth Gene Wilder to remind me that we had dinner together (yes, we did with Louise Lasser and Charles Grodin, and I recalled his thick white sox.) Then Jimmy Buffett stopped by and talked about when he went over to the flipside, he walked onstage to a concert gig. It's often reported by musicians - the feeling of walking onstage and being met by fans and other musicians. He said "It was like playing a 12 hour gig." He talked about feeling all the love from his fans, and had words for his family. For other interviews with musicians, take a look at the book TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE which is mostly about them. Thanks for tuning in.

The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
One of the most infamous episodes in the history of SNL is this summer entry of season 1. In order to make sense of it all Brad and Gary are joined by SNLinReview's Andy Hoglund!Host Louise Lasser takes the show to a place rarely seen in an episode that is VERY meta. Fresh off the success of her own show, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, Lasser brings her unique style of comedy and storytelling to Saturday Night. The lines between reality and fiction are blurred as not only Lasser's real-life drama is brought to the screen but also a recent Rolling Stone article that leads to some tension among the cast, especially Chevy Chase and John Belushi. It's an interesting episode (to say the least) that also includes a number by New Orleans' own Preservation Hall Jazz Band.Subscribe today! That's not cranberry sauce!!!Blood Rage (also known as Nightmare at Shadow Woods and Slasher) is a 1987 American slasher film directed by John Grissmer, written by Bruce Rubin, and starring Louise Lasser, Mark Soper, and Julie Gordon. Set on Thanksgiving, the film follows a woman and her adult son who are stalked at their remote apartment community by the son's unhinged twin brother who has escaped from a psychiatric institution after allegedly killing a man in cold blood years earlier.Watch it hereTUBIYOUTUBE
It's a classic for a reason, folks! This week, we discuss the 1984/1987 once-forgotten, now beloved slasher - Blood Rage! We're sure you remember this Thanksgiving (very) Florida story, in which poor Todd is institutionalized due to being framed for murder by his evil twin - Terry. Decades later, Todd escapes and Terry begins a murderous rampage. Meanwhile, their mother (Louise Lasser) downs bottles of wine and hysterically cleans the house. On this episode: severed hands, heads, and torsos, gun safety, drive-in condom sales, Florida apartment complexes, the joys of leftovers, Thanksgiving dinner surprises, and absolutely no cranberry sauce.
Happy Thanksgiving! We're taking a week off to celebrate the holiday, so we decided to re-release last year's commentary on the Thanksgiving horror classic, Blood Rage. Join us as we discuss cranberry sauce, twins, and Louise Lasser's inspired performance. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, stay safe, and watch out for twins. Our theme music was written and performed by Dave Katusa. He can be found on Instagram @dkat_productions.
The gentlemangs from Straight Chilling Podcast join Caitlin to cover 1987's Blood Rage - a Thanksgiving horror movie for the ages. It's got some monstrous motherhood beats, and it gives us a great evil twin story. It also takes place in Jacksonville, FL, home of Straight Chilling! Tangents include chain restaurants, celebrity nemeses, and getting "the ick." Be sure to check out Straight Chilling wherever you get your podcasts. Happy Thanksgiving!
Justin Beahm stops by to dissect two of the wildest post-Halloween slasher films: Robert Hiltzik's SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983) starring Felissa Rose and BLOOD RAGE (1987) with Louise Lasser and Mark Soper. Susan and Sharon sit down with the co-creator of “Scarecrow & Mrs. King” - Eugenie Ross-Leming - to get some real behind-the-scenes insight on the Kate Jackson action comedy, feminism in television, and managing long-term success in Hollywood. The discussion includes… - Eugenie's early years with the legendary improvisation troupe Second City, where she performed with the likes of John Belushi, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray. - Writing for Norman Lear on the ground-breaking late-night serials “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” starring Louise Lasser and creating “Fernwood 2 Night” starring Martin Mull and Fred Willard. - How she and writing partner Brad Buckner first pitched “Scarecrow & Mrs. King” to CBS -- and failed to sell it – only to have their luck change when junior executive Carla Singer was promoted and brought them back for another shot. - Working with Kate Jackson and the last-minute casting of Bruce Boxleitner. - Details on the wild days of producing the “Scarecrow” pilot – and her and Brad's decision to leave the highly successful hit series they created.Along the way, we'll hear about the importance of staying true to your vision, the lessons learned over a forty-year career that spans “Scarecrow” to “Lois & Clark” to “Supernatural” -- and the sustaining power of two of the most important relationships in her life: her longtime writing partner Brad Buckner, and her husband, Director and Producer Robert Singer. This week Joshua and Drusilla watch the classic film by Frank Henenlotter's Frankenhooker. From Wikipedia: "Frankenhooker is a 1990 American black comedy horror film directed by Frank Henenlotter. Very loosely inspired by Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the film stars James Lorinz as medical school drop-out Jeffrey Franken and former Penthouse Pet Patty Mullen as the title character."But first! Josh goes to a horror legend's wedding, Drusilla attends a witchy book launch, and Drusilla watched Baz Luhrman's Elvis and Jack Be Nimble, a forgotten Alexis Arquette film that she loved. They briefly discuss the various Arquettes before Josh gets into Fast Times at Ridgemont High and full dong before going in on The Beaver Trilogy. Then they get into the feature and its troubled history. Both absolutely adore the film and have a history with it. They discuss some of Frank Henenlotter's other films. The movie has an innocence about it despite being transgressive. They discuss Louise Lasser and the brilliant performances of Patty Mullen and James Lorinz. Josh does a dramatic reading. Super crack does not go undiscussed, nor do the various MPAA issues. Then the duo plays Have You Seen It? Next week is a special episode. For the 25th show, Bloodhaus is doing its first double feature: Suspiria (1977) and Suspiria (2018). Tread Perilously introduces a new sitcom into the Grab Bag rotation with the It's A Living episode called "Boys of Summer." When a Minor League team checks into the hotel, the staff at Above the Top get involved with its members in a variety of ways. Maggie manages to both flirt with and insult the team manager at every turn. Dot takes pity on a Costa Rican pitcher whose whole future rests on winning the series. Cassie refuses to give the star hitter the time of day and Jan goes into extra innings with the third baseman. Will the team win their games? And will Sonny Mann ever get to play his set? Erik carefully peels back the onion to prove why It's A Living is important despite getting lost in the TV landscape. Justin ruminates on why it was so easily forgotten. The stories of Ann Jillian and Louise Lasser get told. Sort of, anyway. Justin finds his way to It's A Living's premise and tries to examine the program via the Four Temperament Ensemble principle. The Golden Girls comes up frequently. A Terminator favorite makes a special appearance. The Minor League Baseball player look is nearly defined. Erik is convinced George Clooney is preventing him from finding episodes of E/R and, surprisingly, sports humor occurs.

We're pushing our HANKSgiving plate aside today for a special Thanksgiving bonus episode. Three years ago — in the early days when we were still the Gargyle Podcast — Nathan and Eric reviewed what is objectively the greatest Thanksgiving horror movie of all time, and we felt like it was finally time to pull that plate out of the back of the fridge, rip off the tin foil, and heat up some of BLOOD RAGE (1987) leftovers! This time Dan joins us to give us his impressions after watching the movie for the first time. We also talk about how much we love the score by Richard Einhorn, Ed French's outstanding makeup, why we think Louise Lasser's performance is actually great, why the shock ending is genuinely devastating, and how the movie just seems to get better and better the more you watch it. So finish up your game of touch football, pop open a can of Old Style beer, and take a seat in front of the refrigerator because you know you can't wait another second to dig into our BLOOD RAGE leftovers! If you enjoyed this episode, come join the Video Monsters crew on Discord!! Hangout episodes are live (and unedited!) every Tuesday night starting around 9:00pm EST. Listen and chat along with us in the Discord chat and we'll even give you a shoutout on the episode! Some dreams really do come true. It may take 40+ years, but SO WHAT?!? Greg Mullavey, Greg Mullavey was worth the wait. A die-hard Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman fan, who missed nary a one of the 325 episodes, which in 1977, pre VCRs, and COVID, when I actually had a life and did stuff, required some effort and diehard devotion, spent today in fangirl heaven. Best part, Greg exceeded all of my very high expectations. Having heard how lovely he is, witnessing his grace first hand, his exemplary social conscience, his authenticity, warmth, thoughtfulness, intelligence, off-the-charts talent, and generosity of spirit moved me… more like blew me away. We talked about Fernwood, of course. His audition with Louise Lasser, to being cast by creator Norman Lear and director, Joan Darling… Mary Kay Place, Dabney Coleman, Graham Jarvis, Dody Goodman, the genuine laughs and fun of it all. We circled back to growing up in Buffalo NY with his major league ballplaying father, Greg Mulleavy, a White and Red Sox, to coaching the Brooklyn and then LA Dodgers, playing baseball himself, only discovering theatre in the Army, where everything turned on a dime. Greg tells the tale with passion and flare. Starting out in theatre in NY, working his way to Hollywood, parts on Bonanza, and loads of other shows before landing as Tom Hartman, the career and life changer. Studying, always studying (still today), in-class with Nicholson, Hopper, and Harry Dean Stanton, meeting Meredith MacRae, their idyllic love story which played out off-screen and on. His father-in-law, Gordon MacRae, hot tubing with Jennifer Jones, working with Natalie Wood, Richard Burton, Mia Farrow, how approaches the work, and teaches it to others. Throughout Greg's great storytelling he pulled out dialect after dialect, all delivered flawlessly, without effect. Such mastery of craft. I can't wait to witness his return to the stage, post-pandemic. Out here auditioning, I sure hope he lands something worthy of his talents with lotsa meat. I wanna watch and savor. Greg's acting is high art. So is his humanity. Food for the COVID crazy soul, Greg shared his health regimens––supplements, nutrients, and meditation, to his thoughts on masking and vaxxing. He's the whole package, brains, heart, soul, and talent out the wazoo. For this fangirl, I'm floating over the rainbow tonight. Tom Hartman lives! More importantly, so does Greg Mullavey. On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we take a look at yet another exploitation gem from Frank Henenlotter - 1990's "Frankenhooker" starring James Lorinz, Patty Mullen, and Louise Lasser. When Elizabeth Shelley (Mullen) is killed in a freak accident, her fiancé and armchair surgeon/mad scientist Jeffery Franken (Lorinz)reassembles her with the remains of a number of sex workers dispatched by explosive "super crack". We aren't even kidding. But does this bizarre cult classic have more to say in this hilarious update of Mary Shelley's horror classic? Or is it just spare parts? Check out the film on Shudder then join us for the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast!
This week, Nigel and Kaitlyn take a look at the 1990 film, Frankenhooker, a modern adaptation of the classic Frankenstein story starring a plethora of adult models and SAG member prostitutes. Check out the film so ridiculous it garnered a cult following just because of the VHS box and an endorsement from Bill Murray himself! l suo nome di battesimo è Allan Stewart Königsberg ma tutti lo conoscono come Woody Allen, uno dei registi più carismatici, dissacranti e iconici del cinema moderno.
On this edition of Bagels and Broadway, playwright Susan Charlotte, founder of Food For Thought Productions, talks about a one-act play starring Louise Lasser and Bob Dishy, that will be performed in front of a very intimate audience, businessman Bob Benjamin and illustrator and publisher Al Kratzer who have teamed up to create a graphic novel taking a jab at the division in politics, Renee Jaworski, artistic director of Pilobolus producing an innovative festival upcoming in Connecticut, and restaurateur Bruce Dimpflmaier from Tony's di Napoli, with a report on how Tony's has remained nimble and creative during these challenging times. The 1987 slasher "Blood Rage" had no idea how perfectly wackadoo it was, and in large part due to Louise Lasser's committed performance (and the film's award-winning theme song!). This week, I queen out on Lasser's epic aria of a phone call with a seemingly bemused operator, the surprisingly charming final girl Karen and some real humanity (and tragedy) underneath all the shlock.
