When it comes to classic films that have left an indelible mark on pop culture, few stand out as vividly as The Princess Bride (1987). Directed by Rob Reiner and adapted from William Goldman's novel of the same name, this film is a rare gem that effortlessly blends adventure, romance, and comedy into a story that continues to captivate audiences across generations. In the latest episode of Born to Watch, Whitey and Damo are joined by our great American mates from the Middle Aged Movie Podcast to explore what makes this film such a cherished piece of cinematic history. It's clear that The Princess Bride is much more than just a fairy tale; it's a cinematic masterpiece that remains as relevant and enchanting today as it was over three decades ago.A Genre-Defying StoryThe Princess Bride defies easy categorisation. At its core, it's a love story between the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright) and her devoted farmhand, Westley (Cary Elwes). But describing it merely as a love story would be a disservice to its richness of narrative. The film is a tapestry woven with fantasy, adventure, comedy, and satire elements. It masterfully parodies the tropes of traditional fairy tales while embracing them, creating a unique, sincere and self-aware tone. The film's brilliant use of a framing device—a grandfather (Peter Falk) reading a book to his sick grandson (Fred Savage)—immediately sets the stage for a tale that is both nostalgic and timeless. This storytelling method allows the film to break the fourth wall and engage the audience directly, making it feel like we, too, are being told a story by a beloved family member. This technique highlights the film's storytelling theme as a powerful and enduring form of connection, resonating deeply with viewers of all ages.Iconic Characters and PerformancesOne of the most memorable aspects of The Princess Bride is its cast of unforgettable characters, brought to life by an ensemble of actors who deliver some of the most iconic performances in cinematic history. Cary Elwes as Westley perfectly embodies the quintessential hero—charming, witty, and endlessly resourceful. His journey from farm boy to the legendary Dread Pirate Roberts is one of the film's most satisfying arcs, and Elwes' performance balances swashbuckling action with deadpan humour, making Westley both a classic and a modern hero. In her film debut, Robin Wright plays Buttercup with a delicate balance of strength and vulnerability. While her character is often the damsel in distress, Wright's portrayal adds depth to Buttercup, making her more than a passive love interest. She gracefully embodies the film's central love story, making the audience root for her and Westley's reunion.Mandy Patinkin's Inigo Montoya, the vengeful Spaniard seeking to avenge his father's death, delivers one of the most famous lines in film history: “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Patinkin's portrayal infuses the character with a passion and sincerity that make Inigo's quest one of the film's most emotionally resonant subplots.Wallace Shawn as Vizzini, the cunning Sicilian whose overconfidence leads to one of the most entertaining battles of wits ever captured on film, is hilarious and memorable. His repeated exclamations of “Inconceivable!” have become a catchphrase that has outlived the movie. And, of course, André the Giant as Fezzik, the gentle giant with a heart of gold, is another standout. André's natural charisma and physical presence make Fezzik one of the film's most endearing characters, providing comic relief and emotional warmth.A Perfect Blend of Humour and HeartIts seamless blend of humour and heart sets The Princess Bride apart. William Goldman's screenplay is filled with sharp, witty dialogue that keeps the audience laughing, but it never sacrifices the story's emotional core. The humour is often self-referential and playful, poking fun at the conventions of the genre while also delivering genuine moments of tenderness and affection. The film's pacing is another key factor in its enduring appeal. At a brisk 98 minutes, The Princess Bride never overstays its welcome. Each scene serves a purpose, whether advancing the plot, deepening the characters, or delivering a memorable line that will be quoted for years to come. The balance of action, romance, and comedy ensures something for everyone, making it a perfect family film that appeals to both children and adults.Cinematography and Score: Enhancing the FantasyThe visual and auditory elements of The Princess Bride play a significant role in creating its fairy-tale atmosphere. The cinematography by Adrian Biddle captures the beauty and whimsy of the film's various settings, from the rolling hills of Florin to the foreboding Cliffs of Insanity. The use of practical effects and on-location shooting gives the film a timeless quality that CGI-heavy movies often lack.Mark Knopfler's score further enhances the film's enchanting mood. The music is both romantic and adventurous, perfectly complementing the tone of the story. Knopfler's theme for The Princess Bride is instantly recognisable, its gentle melodies evoking the nostalgia and magic that defines the film.A Cultural PhenomenonSince its release, The Princess Bride has grown from a modest box-office success to a full-fledged cultural phenomenon. Its influence can be seen in countless other films, TV shows, and even video games that have drawn inspiration from its blend of romance, adventure, and humour. The film's dialogue has become so ingrained in popular culture that even those who haven't seen it can often recognise its most famous lines. Moreover, The Princess Bride has inspired a fiercely loyal fan base that spans multiple generations. Its appeal lies in its universal themes of love, bravery, and the triumph of good over evil. These themes resonate with audiences of all ages, making it a film that parents are eager to share with their children, ensuring its legacy for years. Conclusion: A Tale for the AgesThe Princess Bride (1987) is more than just a movie; it's an experience that transports viewers into a world where true love conquers all, where heroes are brave and resourceful, and where even the most diabolical villains have a touch of humour. Its perfect blend of romance, adventure, and comedy, combined with unforgettable characters and iconic dialogue, makes it a timeless classic that continues to enchant audiences nearly four decades after its release. At Born to Watch, we believe that in a cinematic landscape often dominated by franchises and reboots, The Princess Bride stands out as a reminder of the power of original storytelling. It's a film that doesn't rely on spectacle or special effects but on the strength of its characters, the wit of its script, and the sincerity of its heart. For these reasons and many more, The Princess Bride remains a beloved favourite, a movie that future generations will cherish. For those who have yet to experience the magic of The Princess Bride, there's no better time than now. And for those who have already fallen under its spell, it's always worth revisiting, if only to remind yourself that true love, as Westley famously declares, “is the greatest thing in the world.”Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com....

Ahsoka goes Prime Time, Percy Jackson coming in December, Blue Beetle dethrones Queen Barbie, James Gunn keeps talking

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes In a surprising move, the Ahsoka live-action series two episode premiere was moved from Wednesday, August 23, to, well, pretty much right now - August 22 at 6:00 p.m. pacific time. Disney has been pushing this show with tv spots, trailers, ads, interviews, and more in a way that feels more intentional than some of their previous properties. Beloved young adult book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians is coming to Disney Plus this December! The media megazoid released a trailer on Monday to hype the two episodes premiere starting December 20. The Percy Jackson books are beloved by fans worldwide, but this release has been kept fairly quiet until now. With Blue Beetle in theaters, and beating Barbie out of its four-week top spot domination, fans of DC have been overwhelmingly positive about the new superhero movie featuring relatively unknown hero Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle, portrayed by Cobra Kai actor Xolo Mariduena. Its fellow hero movie The Flash, will premiere on MAX next week. There was a lot of talk about comparing the two movies, but Blue Beetle seems to be distinguishing itself as fresh. And of course - we have James Gunn news! Taking to Threads to respond to a fan who asked about his upcoming 'young Superman movie,' Gunn responded "I was never making a 'young Superman' movie, just a Superman movie.' This seems to contrast a statement Gunn made online in December on the recast of Superman which read "in the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part in Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill." Apple TV+ has revealed details and some photos of its upcoming series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The series will continue Legendary's Monsterverse and will take place in the past and the present after the events of 2014's Godzilla. Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell will play the same character, but an older and younger version of him respectively in flashbacks. Netflix has released the first trailer of the upcoming anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The series returns most of the cast of 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World in voice acting roles and will debut on November 17th. The fantasy series Warrior Nun, which was canceled by Netflix after 2 seasons, is set to return as a trilogy of films. The series had been the subject of a strong fan campaign to revive the show after its cancellation. Amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes, Amazon canceled previously planned second seasons of two shows - A League of Their Own and sci-fi series The Peripheral. Blue Beetle barely dethroned Barbie for the number one spot in the domestic box office this weekend, despite pulling in a lighter than expected $25.4 million domestically and $43 million dollars globally. The film is one of the softest starts in the history of the DC cinematic universe. Disney has announced that several series previously available only on Disney+ will be available for physical purchase including The Mandalorian, Loki, and WandaVision. The physical media will include a blu-ray set and extra features including special making of clips, gag reels, and concept art. The titles will be available for preorder beginning August 28th. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reunited in the first trailer for Good Burger 2. The first Good Burger movie premiered on Nickelodeon in 1997 and was a spin-off from Thompson and Mitchell's sketch routine on All That. Zach Snyder's Rebel Moon released its first trailer today as well. The Netflix sci-fi film stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnum, Djimon Hounsou, and Carey Elwes among others. We'll see a princess try to stop a war, space ships, lasers, and aliens in Snyder's concept that was originally pitched to Star Wars prior to the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm.

Continuing our underrated live action fairytale theme, we watched 2004's Ella Enchanted starring Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy, Minnie Driver and Carey Elwes. This contemporary take on the classic Cinderella tale goes against the norms by not sticking to the traditional story at all and by making Ella a strong female lead. Girl power! This is my personal favourite Cinderella adaption due to the fact that Ella makes her own decisions and ultimately saves Prince Char. We talk about our forever love for Anne Hathaway and how she not only had a huge impact on our childhood, but changed the narrative of young women portrayed in films. We also talk about how this story holds up so well and how the film feels more modern than the most recent Cinderella adaption from 2015, because of the interesting and non-conformist characters. We are not quite done with this theme, so if you enjoy listening and have any suggestions on the next films we choose, email emmareviewsmovies@gmail.com with your suggestions! Guest: Christina Acton

Today your hosts discuss episode 51 from the third season of Pinky and the Brain featuring the segments, "Brainie the Poo" and "The Melancholy Brain." How many water towers will this episode receive? The Megalomaniacal Adventures of Brainie the Poo In this parody of "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," Brainie and Pinklet are in search of some honey for their latest plan to replace all the artificial sweeteners in the world with real sugar. They just need to find a way to get into the honey tree which is protected by angry bees. Along the way they run into Christopher (Walken), "Jagger," "Algore" and even a tiny Bea Arthur. This episode has a lot of funny jokes and some pretty obscure references! It also features John Rhys Davies as the narrator! The Melancholy Brain Pinky and the Brain want to sew the seeds of discord to take over Denmark and eventually all of Scandinavia! The Brain drives Hamlet mad, convinces the King that Hamlet is trying to take over the throne, and even tries to talk the Queen into becoming suspicious of her husband and Hamlet! It all leads up to a sword fight, a dramatic death scene, and a twist ending! This cartoon also features Carey Elwes, Clive Revill and Olivia Hussey lending their voices to the Shakespearean characters. Join the Party! We took a week off but now we're back ... and badder than ever! How is it that after one week of not recording, there seems to be even more TV shows we are behind on? Is it even possible to stay up to date on everything when a new show is constantly premiering? Damn, do you remember how shitty TV entertainment used to be before LOST, Mad Men and Breaking Bad? Well, do you? NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: "The Walking Dead" Season 8 finale brought in 7.9 million viewers — it was the highest rated show of the night, but it was the show's lowest-rated finale since Season 1 — which was watched by 6 million people. Carey Elwes and Jake Busey have joined the cast of "Stranger Things" for Season 3. According to Deadline, Elwes will be playing Larry Kline, the mayor of Hawkins, who was described as “A classic, 80’s style slick politician. Pathetic and driven only by his own interests. The studio is looking for a male, aged from 40s-60s, to fill the role." Busey will be playing a character named Bruce, who was described as “a morally compromised news reporter in his 50s” who is “outwardly sexist, overweight and bedraggled.” Idris Elba is going to Netflix. The service has handed out a straight-to-series, eight-episode order for half-hour entry "Turn Up Charlie," an original comedy created by, starring and exec produced by the "Luther" Emmy nominee. According to THR, "Elba will star in the comedy as Charlie, a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend's problem-child daughter." Comedy Central confirms that Season 5 of "Broad City" will be its final season. Smart move going out on their terms. And with the recent announcement that Amazon is developing an "A League of Their Own" TV series — with Abbi Jacobson co-writing and executive producing — it looks like she'll be keeping busy. I wonder if Alana is good at sports? Nat Geo says Season 3 of its series "Genius" will be about Mary Shelley. Season 2, which is about Pablo Picasso, premieres on Tuesday, the 24th. ABC has once again ordered a 13-episode spinoff to "The Goldbergs." It's currently untitled and will be taking place in the '90s. RECENT RENEWALS & CANCELLATIONS: HBO has renewed "Barry" for Season 2. CBS renewed "Blue Bloods," "Bull," "Hawaii Five-0," "MacGyver," "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "NCIS: New Orleans." Hulu has renewed "I Love You America" Sundance has renewed "This Close" CBS has taken "Living Biblically" off its lineup, basically canceling the series. Sam Jaeger’s inherent talent and carefully selected roles have him poised to arrive as a major leading man in Hollywood. Jaeger could most recently seen in the second season of the television show “Eli Stone.” Jaeger played Dennis in the feature film “Catch & Release,” also starring Jennifer Garner and Kevin Smith. Additionally, Jaeger has such credits as the TV movie “The Riverman,” opposite Carey Elwes and Bruce Greenwood and the indy hit “Lucky Number Slevin” opposite Bruce Willis and Josh Hartnett. “Slevin” was seen at Sundance Film Festival in 2006 and opened nationally to critical acclaim. Recently, Jaeger wrapped production on his feature directorial debut, “Take Me Home,” which he wrote, directed and starred in along with Amber Jaeger, Victor Garber and Bree Turner. Jaeger began his professional career in New York while attending college, landing a guest-starring role on “Law & Order.” He also spent several seasons doing theater in New York before making the move to Los Angeles. Once in LA he landed parts in two feature films, “Traffic” and “Behind Enemy Lines.” After those standout roles, he won the powerful role opposite Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell in “Hart’s War.” In the years following, Jaeger built up an impressive television resume, including roles in such hits as “ER,” “CSI,” “The West Wing,” “NYPD Blue,” “Scrubs,” “That’s Life” and “Girls Club.” In addition to his film and small screen credits, Jaeger has also co-written and co-produced two short films. The first of which, “Quiz Bowl,” caught the eye of actress Kate Bosworth who later agreed to star in his next short, “Advantage Hart.” “Hart” had its premiere at the Hollywood Film Festival and then toured on the film festival circuit.
