This season has been all about leadership, and a large part of being a leader is looking the part. Sadly women are judged far more on their appearance than what they say or do. Looking like a leader is a really important aspect of leadership. This week our guest is stylist and author Lizzie Edwards, whose book ‘Look like the leader you are: a 7 step style strategy for ambitious women' has just been released as a second edition! Lizzie shares her insights on common reasons why women go to her for help, why it's important that we think about our style, and the 7 steps through which we can develop our own personal style. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lizzie & The Makers over Zoom video! “It's almost like when we wrote these songs they went through a David Lynch portal, they came out a little bizarre,” says frontwoman Lizzie Edwards on the creation of Lizzie & The Makers' sophomore album Dear Onda Wahl announced for release on November 5, 2021 [independently] and produced by acclaimed producers Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, Tin Machine) and Mario J. McNulty (David Bowie, Prince). Infusing elements of art-rock, dream-pop, and a celestial atmosphere, Lizzie & The Makers has spawned something entirely their own. Ahead of this sophomore studio album announcement, Lizzie & The Makers had released two singles - the rootsy spellbinding ethereal tune “Mermaid” which American Songwriter called "an enchanting dip into bluesy synth-pop waters" and, more recently, the blues rock stomper "Lover By Proxy" which Glide Magazine highlights the “Led Zeppelin-esque bluesy guitar riff and Edwards' electrifyingly soulful vocals.”“Queens” & more. Elsewhere on the upcoming album, there's the sultry bluesy reverberation of "Magic River" for which Edwards penned the melody for after a post-Whitesnake listening binge. There's a grimy, hard hitting rock track ("Bottle"), which Edwards says is about “being a woman in the rock/blues genre and in music and the word in general", a bouncy rock love-hate letter (“Les Idiots”) to certain “characters” posing in her hometown, NYC's East Village, and a haunting and cathartic groovy, slow rock jam ("Waiting For The Teeth”) about healing. The curiously named title track "Dear Onda Wahl" is a play on words that refers to a metaphorical letter she wrote to a mounted hunting trophy at the bar where she worked, i.e "Deer On The Wall", "Dear Onda Wall." A funky number that was written during a slow workday behind the bar, Edwards gazed at the mounted deer head asking it for love advice: “Deer on the wall, what's the point of it all?" The forlorn tune "Tell Her” is a contrasting musical companion of sorts to the more playful "Lover By Proxy” that highlights Edwards heartfelt, nuanced vocal tone, influenced by Memphis soul legend Ann Peebles, Heart's Wilson sisters, Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee. The haunting, seven-minute closing track “Mojo Hand” is soaked in McMullen's borderline sci-fi sonic sorcery and Edwards' enunciated occultic metaphors; producer Reeves Gabrels also contributed to the track, adding to the otherworldly vibe. A Conversation with Lizzie Edwards: It was pretty impossible for Lizzie Edwards to avoid a career in music. Her grandfather was an opera singer, her grandmother was a classical harpsichordist, and her father was a sideman for various artists including Chuck Berry, and was in a band himself. Throw in a childhood soundtrack including everyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Otis Redding – not to mention – regular trips to the iconic Beacon Theatre, which was steps away from her New York City home, and it's no wonder music has been in her veins practically right from the womb. Lizzie is also among the featured performer at the Notes From A Artist Teen Cancer Benefit at the New York City Winery on February , 2022.The Lizzie Edwards Playlist
Concert Pipeline’s three hundred forty fifth episode featuring Lizzie Edwards of Lizzie & The Makers in which we discuss musical impact from her father and grandfather, her love of performing at Pete’s Candy Store, and their new album “Dear Onda Wahl.”
This week Brian and Jason discuss all the great albums that have been released in 2021. Next Jason gives his show alerts. Then the guys welcome their guest Lizzie Edwards from Lizzie And The Makers, a returning guest to talk about the new record Dear Onda Wall. Lizzie takes the guys into the evolution of the new record, the song writing process, the current state of the Brooklyn scene, and finally an extended journey into the realms of musical guilty pleasures.
Lizzie & The Makers' sophomore studio album, Dear Onda Wahl, embroiders their potent Southern-tinged rock with art-rock, dream-pop, and ethereal elements to spawn something all their own. Released November 5th, it's one of those rare records that combine single-minded artistry with broad commercial appeal. Created around the dusky yet soaring timbre of force-of-nature frontwoman Lizzie Edwards, Dear Onda Wahl was produced by Grammy winner Mario McNulty (David Bowie, Prince) and Cure guitarist Reeves Gabrels (Tin Machine, Bowie). Their influence, alongside the textured six-string and pedal-steel expressions of Edwards' writing partner (and Gabrels protégé) Greg McMullen, ensure an intriguingly adventurous, hugely dynamic – and occasionally otherworldly – take on the traditional. "We're definitely rock 'n roll...[But] it's almost like when we wrote these songs they went through a David Lynch portal, and came out a little bizarre," mulled Edwards. "So I think we've been on this kind of ethereal tear, but our group is really rooted in Southern rock, and some English rock." Atop granite foundations of AC/DC and Black Sabbath, NYC's Makers layer the grooving rock of the Allman Brothers and Pink Floyd's melodic psychedelia. But then there are lurking hints of blues/country rootsiness, and McMullen's accomplished love of the avant-garde. Defying her constant comparisons to Janis Joplin, the classically-trained Edwards summons a heartfelt, nuanced mezzo-soprano shaped by Memphis soul legend Ann Peebles, Heart's Wilson sisters, and jazz icon Billie Holiday. She's assertive, yet vulnerable; defiant, yet proudly flawed. JC got a chance to chat with Lizzie Edwards who spoke about their sound, their process, how it has evolved over time and getting back on the road.
Lizzie Edwards, and her band "Lizzie & The Makers" is releasing this incredible album "Dear onda Wahl", which happens to be it's own story worth listening to. The album is the 2nd effort from an intense act, a country blues rock act from Brooklyn, they sound like a grittier country pop act, with the blues to take you places you never thought of. This album is really something, and comes from a woman who pulls no punches, and belts out the vocals with power. Her lyrics are about bad relationships, and very dark aspects of relationships, and friendships. If you ever needed a great break up album, look no further. Getting lots of writing inspiration from just sitting at the bar, she takes shots at posers, and kind of scares you in the middle of it all. One to get into, I really enjoyed this conversation. Album comes out Nov 5 wherever you "Internet Your Music". lizzieandthemakers.com Instagram: @lizzieandthemakers Facebook: @lizzieandthemakers Please consider supporting us on patreon.
Many of us are preparing go back into the office but after more than a year of working from home for a lot of people, have we forgotten how to dress professionally? Or are we chomping at the bit to put on the armour that is traditional office wear? Or it time to entirely rethink the whole concept of office dress codes? Presenter, Elizabeth Hotson strolls down London's Saville Row to meet tailor Richard Anderson and stylist Lizzie Edwards gives some us tips on how to dress to impress. Deirdre Clemente, a historian who specializes in clothing and fashion at the University of Nevada tells us why March 2020 marked a huge shift in sartorial expectations and photographer Victoria Rose describes how her approach to fashion shifted during the pandemic. It was pretty impossible for Lizzie Edwards to avoid a career in music. Her grandfather was an opera singer, her grandmother was a classical harpsichordist, and her father was a sideman for various artists including Chuck Berry. Since their (accidental) inception in the early 2010s, Lizzie and the Makers have worked diligently to bridge the gap between what a band within the New York City music scene is supposed to be and what a band within the New York City music scene could be. Their sound is dark without being overtly melancholy and psychedelic without being too out of the box. Getting to bother Lizzie was like barbecued kismet, because we actually found out we have mutual crazy friends in NYC. Listen to find out if she would rather poop her pants in public or get her period while wearing white pants on a white couch.
Lizzie Edwards of Lizzie and The Makers is my guest. And we were having a really fun talk when we were interrupted by an uninvited guest. We were talking about music literally being in her DNA, how she had created and booked a blues festival, featuring her band, when everyone but Lizzie decided to quit two weeks before the show. That led to meeting Greg McMullen and the formation of Lizzie and The Makers. They've been going strong for ten years now and have a new album coming out in September. Lizzie describes it as a love letter to David Lynch. I don't know about you guys, but that's enough for me to be interested. There's a lot of great stories here, like playing in a cover band with a bunch of lawyers and her dad, getting Reeves Gabrels involved in the new album, and having Tik Tok performance anxiety. In this episode (recorded Autumn 2019) I speak to Lizzie Edwards, Personal Stylist, Author, Speaker and Image Consultant. Lizzie was nominated by Antoinette Dale Henderson (Ep 9) who was inspired by how Lizzie helps female leaders increase their impact. It was fascinating to hear Lizzie speak about style, not from a focus of fashion, but instead as a tool of visual branding and confidence. We also spoke about personal growth, investing in yourself and not worrying what other people think. One of the key pieces of advice Lizzie gave that resonated with me about 'Progress, not perfection' and 'Done is better than perfect'. The world has changed a lot since we spoke and Lizzie's business has gone from strength to strength and she recently launched her style membership - Elevate. Follow her on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lizzieedwardsuk to find out more. References: https://www.instagram.com/lizzieedwardsuk https://www.lizzieedwards.com https://www.instagram.com/whosnextpoduk One of the quotes Lizzie touches on in the episode (don't play small!): “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world.... And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ― Marianne Williamson We didn't get to cover in this episode - but some of Lizzie's book and podcast recommendations: - Fortunately podcast with Fi and Jane - Marie Forleo - Everything is Figureoutable - Arianna Huffington - Thrive - Angela Duckworth - Grit - Matthew Syed - Black Box Thinking If you enjoyed this episode - please leave a rating and review - thank you :) Follow @whosnextpoduk on Twitter and Instagram for more details! Today I speak with Lizzie Edwards, a personal stylist and wardrobe consultant based in the UK. As an entrepreneur of over 14 years, Lizzie is familiar with the notion of constantly chasing success. With career goalposts constantly shifting, she experienced the dissatisfaction of never reaching an ultimate “destination” in her business. Lizzie shares why she no longer correlates contentment with achievements and reminds us that there is no “one formula” that works for every business. Instead, we can rely on our own intuition and innate wisdom to propel us forward. Lizzie Edwards is a personal stylist and executive presence coach, and the founder and owner of the UK's leading style and wardrobe consultancy for senior female professionals, executives and business owners. She is also the author of a best-selling book, ‘Look Like the Leader You Are; A 7 Step Style Strategy for Ambitious Women.

EP18: What defines success when it comes to personal style? Style consultant, fashionista and former model Lizzie Edwards joins Nicole to talk about dressing for work and making an impact through your personal style. Starting her style career early, Lizzie was 'spotted' by Storm model agency and spent much of the 1990's working as a fashion model living in London, Milan and Paris and working with some of the leading fashion photographers including Rankin, Corrine Day, and David Sims for magazines The Face, I-D and Dazed & Confused. She also worked for fashion magazines such as Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour and as a fit model with designers including John Galliano, Jasper Conran, Karl Lagerfeld, Chloe, and Issey Miyake. In 2005 she set up her Style and Wardrobe Consultancy combining this grounding in fashion with a talent and love for shopping and effortless style, and an interest in personal development. ‘I loved advising people on what to wear, and it was a joy to see how my skills helped people become more confident and happy. As my business grew, increasingly many of my clients were executive women. I am also one of only a handful of UK style and image consultants who has been certified by the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI, FLC). I love my work, and have great fun with my clients. In the 12 years since I started my consultancy I have worked with hundreds of women, spoken in front of countless groups and led workshops helping people discover their personal style and upgrade their image.' Lizzie Edwards joins us on The SHAIR Podcast. Lizzie wants to know; what do you do when your partner is getting out of rehab, has multiple years battling addiction, is resisting the process of recovery and relapse is imminent? You ask yourself the tough questions: Am I willing to put my life on hold while I stand by my partner during the process? Am I willing to do the work on myself and go to support groups like CODA and ALANON? Am I willing to set clear limits and boundaries moving forward with my partner? Am I willing to draw a line in the sand about relapse and create a no tolerance policy should a relapse occur? Am I will willing to cut off all people, places, and things that would trigger a relapse for my partner? There are so many questions we have to ask ourselves during this process because a using drug addict will destroy everyone and everything in their path in order to use. It's not personal and in moments of clarity they will feel shameful and remorseful but unless they are actively seeking recovery they will eventually go back to using and wreaking havoc.
