    Sticky Jazz Interview OMD

We all know Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, or OMD for the brevity, as one of those New Wave Synth bands that has been around for ever, and indeed they have. Topping 40 plus years of making deeply powerful synth pop, they have been at it again with this work that began during covid, and culminated in the masterpiece "Bauhaus Staircase". This is a great piece, that is full of all the philosophy and discussion about the human race, that only one could achieve through a concept of the practicality of the architecture of "Bauhaus" and it's art, and how the human race might just function around said artistic philosophy. I spoke to Andy McCluskey the singer for OMD about this album, how it came to be, what the inspiration was for it and how they see the concepts helping mankind. In short, it was a seriously geeky conversation, but not just for art and philosophy fans, it was also great for music fans in general. The album comes out on October 27th 2023, and it is worth the wait, I play a track from it on this episode. website youtube spotify#omd #bauhausstairase #joydivision #orchestralmaneuversinthedark #newwave #80ssynth #andymccluskey

Imagine a fantasy film, sci fi geek who also makes horror film videos to her music. Yeah that sets your mind in motion as to Maisy Kay, and what she does. Maisy Kay is an English songwriter who has incredible vision and creativity, and a very morbid sense of humor. Her music might sound fun and bubbly, but under the hood, she is really unloading a lot of thought, deep in dark spaces of the universe, but she does it smiling. Having moved as a teen from a tiny rural village in "The Midlands" in England to Los Angeles for a recording contract, she has been making this kind of music, and now playing it on her first tour. She is often compared to Kate Bush musically, and has been setting the stage aflame with punters chanting her name before she even steps onto the stage. She has even taken to playing Kate Bush covers on tour, and doing it very well, that should be enough of a reason to go see her live I would think. We talked about all of these things, her music, inspiration for the videos, and even running around with scalpels. She has hit the ground running and is a delight to talk to. *Note, as of the release of this episode there are a handful of tour dates left but the shows are sold out. tictok instagram facebook youtube spotify website#iceland #avatar #dune #pandora #jamescameraon #fatrats #maisykay #horrorfilms #macabre #corpsebride #dune #thehunger #katebush#ladyblackbird #blackacidsoul #marleymunroe

Sticky Jazz Interview AMAARA / Kaelen Ohm

Kaelen Ohm is a Canadian born singer, singwriter, filmaker and actor. She has had her finger in many pies, staring in the Isreali TV- Series "Hit and Run" and several other films "Taken" etc, she has made an outstanding career in music. I found AMAARA to be one of those trance inducing acts, that once you push play, you just let the music take you on an adventure. The most recent album "Child Of Venus" was inspired by an experience where Kalen Ohm was getting her Vedic Chart read to her, in which she was told she was "A child of Venus". That idea was reflected in the album of self discovery, and finding what it means to be "human" under so many different terms of understanding. There is so much to unpack in the music which will take you through London Grammar to Fleetwood Mac and some M83 in the Twin Peaks Universe, yeah it's that good. We talked about her new album from her home on Nova Scotia, and covered the subjects of the songs, the songwriting, and how each experience is unique as a human being, and that norms are not really always the best thing for people. @charmschoolmedia@amaaramaara@kaelenohminstagram twitter facebook bandcamp spotify#amaara #kaelenohm #hitandruntvseries #lgbtqmusicians #canadianmusicians #dreampop #onedove #massiveattack #londongrammar

    Sticky Jazz Interview GayC/DC

GAYC/DC, yeah, the band name says it all. As a collaborative band of a bunch of friends who are gay musicians that LOVE heavy metal doing AC/DC covers, somehow this had to happen. If only for the fact that the LGBTQ community needs more Punk and Metal in their diet. GayC/DC are exactly that. As the drummer Brian Welch explained it "We wanted to take the most "hetero-normal " band and turn it on it's head". It wasn't really that difficult honestly, for some songs they would just change a single letter from "R" to "C" in "Let there be ROCK". You can see where this is going. I have interviewed 3 of them in other bands over the years, and it is always great to talk to them, not just for the jokes, but for their history in music, these guys are pros and have the stories to back it up. This is a labor of tasteless rude and offensive love (and lust I suppose). They will have you laughing, and then tell you something thoughtful in the same moment. They just collaborated with music production Tim Eaton ( En Vogue. Allman Brothers) to do a cover of Argent's song "Hold Your Head Up" a queer rallying anthem against bullying. The video tells the story, and these guys just happened to be the voice for it. (link below). If you want loud, rocking, tasteless, rude and offensive, look no further than GayC/DC, these guys deliver in ways that hair metal bands can't even imagine. They actually started a cult following by attending an AC/DC concert wearing their own band T-shirts. I wore their T-shirt to UTAH PRIDE, and consider it an honor to know these guys. We all remember Dexys Midnight Runners in the early 80s with "Come On Eileen" as an epic tune that you always smile when it comes across the airwaves on the nostalgia station. Dexys (the current name) have been making music for 40 years, and if you missed out on it, there was some wonderful music made by these guys. There was a moment when Kevin Rowland was trying to make some changes in his live and get sober, that some major changes happened in his image and his approach to things. With the release of an album "My Beauty" that had him dressed in some fine women's attire, he went on to embrace his "Sexy Feminine" side. The press wasn't very kind to him, and somehow took more of an issue with it, and so much was lost there than what the music had to offer. I have been a fan of all of the music, and didn't really think much of what the point was that Kevin Rowland was trying to make, until now. Dexys has released an album called "The Feminine Divine", and there is so much in this album you will have to go through it several times. It is a musical "Fiction" presentation of Kevin's journey out of toxic masculinity, and finding his whole self. Nothing wrong with that, I bless anyone with the kudos to make it that far and in one piece. SWANS is an experimental rock band, who have been making unconventional music since 1982. Their music requires somewhat of an investment to appreciate. SWANS music will often take you to the far reaches of the human condition and the human psyche, always leaving the door open to interpretation, even when the lyrics seem clear about the idea, after listening to it enough the music can often change what you think the words mean. They have been known to play acoustic shows, in tiny venues with arena size sound systems that are so loud that I often wondered how they could produce the sounds on instruments like that. I got to speak to Michael Gira about the new album "The Beggar" which takes a very different turn from the typical music we have gotten from them. This album is full of more chimes and bells, and a "Joyeous" choral experience, almost like what you would hear in an English Abby, at full throttle intensity. This album is the kind of music you would enjoy listening to as the world is coming to an abrupt end knowing it will melt away into a supernova in a few hours, you want this album as your solace. I was in awe at the opportunity to speak to Michael Gira, and I was more often than not surprised at the answers he gave me. A very down to earth, and deep thinker, he shocked me at some of the things he had to say. No matter what you think you know about him, you are going to be surprised at how humble a legend can be. website facebook#swans #experimentalrock #michaelgira #thebeggar #noisemovement

Her music sound, and her video elements capture the "Zeitgeist" of 1999, with the imagery of Paula Cole, but with a hard indie rock sound. She grew up in country, and hip hip, and caught on to rock & roll a bit later in life, and she is having fun catching up . She has a lot of wit, and courage in her personality, she is not afraid of being who she really is. She is pan-sexual and a proud member of the LGBTQ community. I talked to Nick from his flat in Berlin about his songwriting, the influencing ideas, writing songs in English, and how they do it. Suzie (June) is who I would describe as "The New NICO" (Yes I did say that) who has a very cheerful sound to her vocals, but still the depth and passion of her predecessor . If it's books, old films, or just arty films, or just an attempt to capture something sightly foreign, you will find those influences in their skillful songwriting. The talent on this album "Motion and Picture" is immeasurable. Shawn Rios, and Brian McSweeney can put so much into each song, that throughout the album, each song sounds often like it is from a totally different band. Some of their stuff would be called "The American version of Interpol" some of their work has U2, Muse, and Freddie Mercury vocals, IN THE SAME SONG. They often are compared to Jeff Buckley, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine. From singing against materialistic lifestyles, or "Big Brother" ruling our worlds today, and we can't go back, or songs about coal miners, there is so much for thought, and also just as much room for interpretation in their music. We bantered about Hungarian History, performing with David Bowie, and her lack of interest in science fiction. She just released her new EP SHOWGIRL, (L'Freak-show girl more like it). I love her work, but this new stuff leaves nothing out of talent, emotion and passion. She is witty, knows what she wants, and proudly flys her "Freak" flag high. She was bullied as a kid for being different, now that is what she thrives on. "You called me a freak, now that's my name". She is the daughter of a Scottish religious academic, and spent time in Australia, but lives in Guernsey (a tiny island on the English channel). She has a very "Kate Bush" approach to her singing, but you feel the spirit of something so much more powerful. We went off on tangents about history, and other pieces of her history, like the fact that she sang backup for, and toured with FISH, from Marillion. I was too cool to like her back then, but it was a guilty pleasure to be honest. I met her once in an airport and she was just the kindest most real person. She is unpretentious, friendly and really just likes reaching people, wether its just a smile, a joke, or a song, she puts herself out there knowing that each interaction with a person will have its reward. We talked about the depth of her experiences on "Shadows" and the fact that she is still amazed with the lights turn on. The greatest band that flew under the radar, and by the time anyone noticed, it was too late. One of my favorite bands of all time "This Picture" released their first album "A Violent Impression" with the single "Naked Rain" in late 1991, then followed up with "City of Sin" 2 years later, then vanished. They were mistaken as a U2 clone, which was unfortunate because they were a fantastic creative team that, you will learn in this interview, did not play the music industry well, they stuck to their guns, and refused to be exploited. The singer Symon Bye carried on with the band members doing some work under his own name, and was a music consultant for Luc Besson, and the French Film undustry. "This Picture" as a band are the most amazing story, with only "Truthful" lyrics. Symon Bye tells it like is, when it was. That is how you describe the Dead Milkmen, they were a fun, comedic Punk band that started in the 80s, and set out only to entertain people, that was their statement. I have been a fan since 1987, and met Joe several times over the years. The Dead Milkmen were always fun to listen to, and had no problem pulling out all the stops for a good laugh. Simon Spence was a music journalist who decided with a couple other journalists to see if they could create a "Prank" band, and prove that ANYONE would get lots of money thrown at them for being nothing more than a showcase act of bad behaviour. Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2022 89:05

MuMu is a Harlem NYC Queer feminist singer and composer. She writes really biting pop songs with a wonderful delivery of subject matter you were forbidden to speak of in elementary school. She wrote the music for the musical "Best Summer Ever" and starred in it alongside Maggie Gyllenhal. She is one to take even ME off on tangents and has more wit than anyone I have ever interviewed. She has no filter, and knows how to get to you, and get ideas out of you, I felt at times like I was the one being interviewed (called out). This is one singer you can't pass up, she has something for everyone. website facebook instagram youtube tiktok soundcloud bandcamp #mumu #queersingers #bitchinme #latterdaylesbian #bestsummerever #jamielawrence #loureed #chumbawamba #freethenip #lgbtqsingers
