Author Don Klees is on the podcast to talk about his new book David Bowie: 1983-2016 Every Album, Every Song. It's part of Sonicbond Publishing's On Track series. In a career full of twists and turns, none was as sharp as the one David Bowie experienced after his 1983 album Let's Dance. The record gave Bowie the hit that he wanted but completely altered his artistic standing in the process. Instead of an innovator who pushed rock music forward, the singer found himself a global superstar with a mass audience whose tastes he didn't understand and who reciprocated this feeling as the 1980s unfolded. After immersing himself in the band project Tin Machine, Bowie spent the 1990s embracing reinvention and experimentation with mixed but often fascinating results, leading to a full-fledged renaissance early in the 21st century. From there, his story only got stranger; 2013's The Next Day was a triumphant comeback after years of self-imposed silence. Meanwhile, 2016's Blackstar stood among his most challenging albums and became the final release of his lifetime. One constant is that the records David Bowie released during this time were ultimately the result of his artistic vision, wherever it took him. This book considers all those releases on their own merits, away from the shadow of his 1970s landmarks. Even if Bowie himself didn't always appreciate the results, every album featured songs worthy of his reputation.Purchase a copy of David Bowie: 1983-2016 Every Album, Every Song in the UKPurchase a copy of David Bowie: 1983-2016 Every Album, Every Song in the USFollow Don Klees:Facebook Instagram Episode Playlist ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock Store The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

I had the opportunity to chat with Austin rock duo  The Caughtery.  Formed in 2020, The Caughtery is long-time Austin music veterans Lisa Tingle and David Gayler, whose contemporary rock output is influenced by musical threads running from the 60s through current.  Their 2022 debut EP "The Caughtery" presents a series of “musical paintings”, expressing the pressure and fragility of the human state over the last few years. In September of 2023, they released "The Rain Song," paying tribute to Led Zeppelin, produced and recorded by David Gayler and mixed by legendary producer Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, Tin Machine, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, HIM, The Mission), who also worked with Robert Plant on his '"Shaken n Stirred" solo album. "This is one of Led Zeppelin's most beautiful songs. A beautiful ballad legendarily created based on George Harrison's belief and comments to the band members that Led Zeppelin needed to compose more ballads. Mr. Plant and Page apparently took that to heart and created this masterpiece," says Lisa Tingle. Lisa Tingle has received multiple honors at the Austin Music Awards (Female Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Best Song, Musician of the Year, Album of the Year), and has toured / performed with legends such as Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble, Eric Johnson, Stephen Bruton, Monte Montgomery and Marcia Ball. David Gayler is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and studio owner based in Spicewood, Texas. Having moved here from New York in the mid-80s, Gayler has been in various bands over the years, opening for such notable artists as The Romantics, Charlie Sexton and Jerry Jeff Walker, and was also a member of the Party Band during MTVs journey down to Texas in the late 1980s.What is the Caughtery ?"Cutting or making new sound but cauterizing it and sealing it as you go along the path."  Lisa Tingehttps://www.thecaughtery.comQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap Radio | KMOD: San Antonio 2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)Follow me on my social media sites :Website: https://djnocturna.comYouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@DJNocturnaRadio: https://modsnapradio.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/nocturna.remixed/Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/djnocturna/Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dj.nocturna https://www.tiktok.com/@dj.nocturna

It's a monster length podcast as we go balls deep into K240, and have to come up for air halfway through, yes that's right kids, it's another two parter.   When we're not dredging up half remembered kids' TV themes, we're examining Bret Michaels' contribution to the genre of Christmas music and investigate the unfathomable social media activity of the members of Def Leppard.   Also in this issue: The Grip, Vixen, Last Crack, The Soho Roses, Tin Machine, adverts for Durex and All Clear shampoo, and a SCATHING review of Queen's new album.    We ponder the US (or U.S.) Festival of 1983 and consider a Rashomon style retelling of said event featuring Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen.    In addition there's Steel Panther's Demolicious, Froggy Fresh, a reappraisal of Michael Bolton as a Glam metal act, Tongue Tied (again), Brookside and Hollyoaks' forays into horror, and the enigma that is Valensia.   Finally we recommend a few of our favourite podcasts. Héctor Gerónimo nos presta ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' de David Bowie. “Loving The Alien” is a new documentary that focuses on the last 25-years of David Bowie's life and career with a special emphasis on some of his most brilliant performances during that time period. Documentary filmmaker (and host of the A Cat Named Mo Show on 102.5 The Bone in Tampa, Florida) Maurice Jovan, explains what inspired him to put this doc together, how he found and curated the footage, and why he chose this specific Bowie era. He discusses Bowie and Tin Machine, the “Hallo Spaceboy” performance with Foo Fighters at Bowie's 50th Birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden, Bowie's decision to stop touring in 2004, his final album “Blackstar,” and the genius of his ever-changing persona. He also shares stories about some of his favorite songs and moments in “Loving The Alien” including “Outside,” “Absolute Beginners,” and the bits with Bowie and Ricky Gervais. “Loving The Alien” Trailer: https://vimeo.com/user127717878/bowiedoc?share=copyDocumentary streaming on June 2nd Thank you for supporting our sponsors!Gametime – Download the Gametime app, create an account, and use the promo code TIJ to get $20 off.Factor – visit https://factormeals.com/TIJ40 and use code TIJ40 to get 40% off your first boxeBay Motors: get the right parts, the right fit, and the right prices. https://ebaymotors.comMetro By T-Mobile: Switch and get unlimited 5G starting at $25 a month per line for 4 lines, and a FREE 5G phone.Toyota: Visit https://toyota.com/GRFamily to find your perfect Toyota!Bosch Tools: learn more at https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/SlingTV: check out https://www.sling.com/ for special offers  STAY CONNECTED:TikTok: @TalkIsJericho @chrisjerichoofficialInstagram: @talkisjericho @chrisjerichofozzy Twitter: @TalkIsJericho @IAmJerichoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisJerichoFozzyWebsite: https://www.webisjericho.com/

On episode 21 of Past Prime, Steve and Matty put on their dayglo, double-breasted suits and grab their headless guitars to fully absorb the proto-Alt noise of Tin Machine "II," the second album from David Bowie's alleged band of equals. Alongside Staten Island everyman, Reeves Gabrels, and two of Soupy Sales kiddos, the once Thin White Duke maintained he was just one fourth of a middle-aged band that was obsessed with The Pixies, but who also might have predicted Grunge. Our co-hosts tackle everything from the album's de-phallused cover, to their one great hit, to the contributions of drummer, Hunt Sales, who liked to perform in his underwear and who wrestled the mic away from Bowie for the album's most bombastic, least defensible moments. "II" (1991) was the band's final studio album. After a world tour that spawned a live album ("Oy Vey Baby"), Bowie married Iman, pulled Gabrels aside and said farewell to the Sales brothers. Though for years he insisted that Tin Machine would return, it never came to be. They survive primarily as the butt of jokes about middle-aged rock star missteps and as an awkward transition from Bowie's dry period to his less dry turn towards Trent Reznor. "II" is not available on most streaming services. It wants to be forgotten, but our co-hosts won't let that happen because middle age comes for everyone -- even Ziggy Stardust. To read more about Tin Machine's "II" check out the full essay at Past Prime.

David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie (/ˈboʊi/ BOH-ee),[1] was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Bowie was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music.Bowie developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity", released in 1969, was his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. In 1977, he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had three number-one hits: the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure" (a 1981 collaboration with Queen). He achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s starting with Let's Dance (1983). Between 1988 and 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, Bowie was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Lizzie & The Makers over Zoom video! “It's almost like when we wrote these songs they went through a David Lynch portal, they came out a little bizarre,” says frontwoman Lizzie Edwards on the creation of Lizzie & The Makers' sophomore album Dear Onda Wahl announced for release on November 5, 2021 [independently] and produced by acclaimed producers Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, Tin Machine) and Mario J. McNulty (David Bowie, Prince). Infusing elements of art-rock, dream-pop, and a celestial atmosphere, Lizzie & The Makers has spawned something entirely their own. Ahead of this sophomore studio album announcement, Lizzie & The Makers had released two singles - the rootsy spellbinding ethereal tune “Mermaid” which American Songwriter called "an enchanting dip into bluesy synth-pop waters" and, more recently, the blues rock stomper "Lover By Proxy" which Glide Magazine highlights the “Led Zeppelin-esque bluesy guitar riff and Edwards' electrifyingly soulful vocals.”“Queens” & more. Elsewhere on the upcoming album, there's the sultry bluesy reverberation of "Magic River" for which Edwards penned the melody for after a post-Whitesnake listening binge. There's a grimy, hard hitting rock track ("Bottle"), which Edwards says is about “being a woman in the rock/blues genre and in music and the word in general", a bouncy rock love-hate letter (“Les Idiots”) to certain “characters” posing in her hometown, NYC's East Village, and a haunting and cathartic groovy, slow rock jam ("Waiting For The Teeth”) about healing. The curiously named title track "Dear Onda Wahl" is a play on words that refers to a metaphorical letter she wrote to a mounted hunting trophy at the bar where she worked, i.e "Deer On The Wall", "Dear Onda Wall." A funky number that was written during a slow workday behind the bar, Edwards gazed at the mounted deer head asking it for love advice: “Deer on the wall, what's the point of it all?" The forlorn tune "Tell Her” is a contrasting musical companion of sorts to the more playful "Lover By Proxy” that highlights Edwards heartfelt, nuanced vocal tone, influenced by Memphis soul legend Ann Peebles, Heart's Wilson sisters, Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee. The haunting, seven-minute closing track “Mojo Hand” is soaked in McMullen's borderline sci-fi sonic sorcery and Edwards' enunciated occultic metaphors; producer Reeves Gabrels also contributed to the track, adding to the otherworldly vibe. Tim Palmer's CV is beyond impressive - starting as an assisatant at Utopia studios in the 80s, he mixed worldwide smash I just died in your arms tonight by Cutting Crew - this led to further work with 80s new wave bands like Kajagogoo and The House Of Love - this brought him to the attention of Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin who wanted a more contemporary sound for his 80s solo work. His work on Robert's records brought him to the attention of David Bowie who also wanted a fresh pair of ears on the production desk for what would become the Tin Machine project. Moving into the 90s, Tim turned his attention from production to mixing, and his work on 'Ten', the debut album by an american rock band called Pearl Jam, catapulted him to the top of his profession. A fact that was confirmed when ten years later, as he was heavily involved in mixing the U2 album 'All That You Can't Leave Behind'. Production credits including Goo Goo Dolls, Tears For Fears, Texas and even the Lord Of Darkness himself Ozzy Osbourne confirm Tim's place in the pantheon of modern production and mixing greats. When we started the interview the most beautiful array of classic guitars were lined out on the wall behind him, so we started by getting the stories on some of those, before turning to the work with Plant, Bowie, Page, Osbourne, Bono, and countless others. For a link to Tim's website click here For a link to Tim's work click here The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. Broken Records - The Search for the Worst Album Ever

There's an air of slight befuddlement on episode 37 of Broken Records as Remfry and Steve discuss Tin Machine's II, the 1991 sophomore album from the sort of supergroup. Sort of because really, the only member of the group that is ‘super' is one Mr. David Bowie (you may have heard of him). Supported by 3 singles, the album peaked at number 23 in the UK, though it only made it to number 126 in the US. The band's label, Victory Music, went bankrupt after the album's release, leading to it being mostly unavailable for purchase until 2020, when it was given its first major reissue on both vinyl and CD. In a rare failure of judgement, Bowie himself was so assured with the project he left EMI, who were willing to put out David Bowie solo material but not this project. But is Tin Machine II really that bad? Where would it rank as a part of David Bowie's solo career? And did Tin Machine, as some critics have retrospectively argued, predict the rise of grunge?

Scot and Jeff discuss the third and final part of David Bowie's career (1982-2016) with Damon Linker. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Damon Linker, Senior Columnist for The Week. Read Damon's work here and follow him at @DamonLinker on Twitter. Damon's Music Pick: David Bowie Political Beats knows when to go out, and when to stay in, and we're asking you to stay in and listen to us discuss the brilliant adventure of the latter part of David Bowie's career from the moment when he first became a true multi-platinum global superstar with Let's Dance. He then lost the plot for several years after getting captured and trapped by his newfound audience, and struggled to work himself back up into wakefulness in fits and starts, first with his hard rock pseudo-democratic band Tin Machine, then with a series of variant 1990s albums that openly nodded toward his younger peers, and finally with a completely new and full bloom of genius in the 2000s with Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, and his swansong Blackstar. This is the story of a man who finally achieved everything he ever wanted only to realize it was a largely Pyrrhic victory, but then slowly rebuilding himself back up to artistic greatness once again. David Bowie left us in 2016 at a peak equal to anything he had done during his Seventies heyday, and with his final album placed a capstone on an artistic legacy that stands uniquely among the modern era's musical landscape. Join us as we celebrate it, and drink to a better future.
