This episode of Reading with Your Kids featured fascinating discussions about science, books, and education. Jennifer Swanson, our dean of all things STEM & STEAM, shared her work exploring an ancient underwater forest off the coast of Alabama through her new book The Lost Forest. She emphasized the importance of sparking curiosity in children through hands-on learning. Serena Li then discussed the mission of Duck Duck Books to teach social-emotional skills through diverse children's literature. Her personal story highlighted how these skills can impact mental health and family relationships. Both guests agreed that parents are their child's first teachers and should instill unconditional love. Serena Li also introduced a new platform called Book an Author that aims to simplify connections between authors, schools, and bookstores. By posting opportunities and profiles, it allows these groups to efficiently find each other at the right time. Overall, the episode celebrated reading as a way to bond with children and promoted inclusive education through science, books, and new digital tools. A 10-part audio documentary series on The Nocturnists podcast, “Shame in Medicine: The Lost Forest” explores how shame is experienced by clinicians, medical students, and patients. Shame is ubiquitous in healthcare. Shame experiences in healthcare workers contribute to burnout, depression, suicidality, impaired empathy, disengagement from learning, social isolation, diminished physical wellness, unprofessional behavior, and altered professional identity formation — all challenges that continue to vex the medical community and lead to poor health outcomes. Hosted by Emily Silverman, MD and produced in collaboration with the Shame and Medicine project at the University of Exeter, this podcast series breaks the silence about shame in medical practice, sharing intimate stories told by healthcare workers and patients from across the globe. "Shame in Medicine: The Lost Forest" starts on September 13. Listen to the series trailer and follow The Nocturnists wherever you listen to podcasts.

[Intro: 8:02] In this episode, I speak with writer, arborist, and professional horticulturist Max Paschall. We discuss his essay ‘The Lost Forest Gardens of Europe,’ published at the Shelterwood Forest Farm website. In addressing the ever-increasing, ongoing impacts anthropogenic climate change is having on food production and land management, for those of us that descend from European colonizers in North America, what can we learn from the past? What relationship did our ancestors have with the lands they were indigenous to, and how did they adapt to rapid climatological and ecological shifts throughout the millennia? In Max's fascinating and illuminating essay ‘The Lost Forest Gardens of Europe,’ the answers to these questions come more into focus. “Whereas modern industrial agriculture is descended from a distinctly imperialist Roman plantation system based on slave labor, systems like coltura promiscua [mixed cultivation] are the direct descendants of the indigenous forest gardens of pre-agricultural Europe. Since the Neolithic Revolution, an assortment of farming systems in Europe that relied heavily on monocultures and a handful of finicky staple crops often ended abruptly and violently. The diverse forest gardens of peasants, however, have quietly shrugged off ten thousand years of turbulent changes. This article is a look at the little-known history of these systems and their innovative strategies for survival. As we search for ways to remake the way we garden, farm, and live in a time of climate change, extreme inequality, and political disarray, looking back at the innovations of Europe’s hidden agroecological past can provide invaluable lessons on how we might collectively move forward.” (https://bit.ly/2HRkScu) Max Paschall is an ISA certified arborist and professional horticulturist coming from four generations of nurserymen and women. Biodiversity and protected area specialist, Julian Bayliss, shares the details of his interesting work in conservation biology, ecology, and area management over the years, with a special emphasis on his discovery of a lost forest. Tune in to learn: How Bayliss discovered and confirmed the existence of the forest What common African folklore is shared among the locals near Mount Lico regarding the mountain What new species were discovered in the lost rainforest atop Mount Lico Over 15 years of biodiversity research and surveys in Africa eventually led to the discovery of a lost rainforest atop Mount Lico in Northern Mozambique. The expeditions that led to this are a part of a larger conservation program that aims to bring attention and focus to the importance of protecting the high-altitude mountains and biodiversity in this region. Ultimately, it is about providing the necessary evidence to justify the funds for protecting and managing this region of Africa. According to the locals surrounding the base of the mountain, no one had ever been up there…up the steep circle of rock cradling a rainforest about one kilometer in diameter. With this information, Bayliss and his team set out to explore the secret forest he'd identified through satellite imagery, with the expectation that they would be the first humans to ever step foot there. However, they were in for quite a surprise when they discovered three upturned clay pots arranged in a triangular shape beside a stream. How did they get there? When were they put there? And by whom…and why? These are a few of the questions Bayliss talks about on today's show. He also explains what types of new species were found in the rainforest, the DNA sequencing they're doing to learn more about the animals found, and what he's planning for the future. In this podcast, I speak with Chris Duke of the Phoenix Conservancy Project, who is heading up the newly formed Madagascar Project. We speak about Madagascar, a country that a lot of people, including conservation groups kinda write off as a lost cause. In particular, Chris is working to protect something called the Lost Forest of Ivohboro that wasn’t discovered until 2016. Chris also explains that while Madagascar is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, it is still one of the most undervalued ecosystems, even to other conservation groups. Dig deep in this newspaper and you will find a window into another world. It’s a nature preserve where you can be on a snow-covered mountain one minute and in a desert or by the ocean the next. It’s a place where bears and wolves vie for territory with human predators who want to smuggle drugs or assassinate the president. This, of course, is the world of Mark Trail, the hero of Lost Forest and the star of the long-running comic strip of the same name that appears here and in 174 other newspapers around the world. Column from Wednesday, August 24, 2016
The 2014 OAA-ANU Lecture The world’s tallest flowering plants – the Mountain Ash forests – lie just 90 minutes’ drive north-east from the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They are the world’s most carbon dense ecosystems. They yield almost all of Melbourne’s water supply and are a critical environment for a wide range of native plants and animals. Mountain Ash forests are also subject to widespread logging, primarily for paper production and were the scene of the 2009 Black Saturday wildfires – the worst natural disaster in Australian history. The ANU has conducted key research programs on forest ecology, biodiversity conservation and disturbance (logging and fire) impacts in these forests since mid-1983 leading to a major body of new knowledge and an array of exciting scientific discoveries. In this lecture Professor David Lindenmayer summarises some of the extra-ordinary ecology of Mountain Ash forests and some sobering recent research results highlighting links between past logging operations and the elevated severity of the 2009 fires. Remarkably, very few Australians know about these forests – or of the enormous economic benefits that could accrue from strategic tourism investment and infrastructure. The final part of this Lecture outlines an exciting new vision for the regions lie north-east of Melbourne – a vision that ultimately may be critical to the very long-term persistence of this majestic forest itself – with resultant benefits for all Australians.” Academic, media, business, professional, political, community leaders, Association members - and guests are invited to participate in this ecological expose that has the potential to impact on each and every one of us - now and into the future.
