Season Three of Old-Time Radio Essentials continues! This time it's Pete's pick -- but he's invited Essential Listener Rick to choose something for us to enjoy and discuss. (NARADA RADIO COMPANY) And since we're on the subject of discussion, we hope to determine whether this entry meets the following criteria: 1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.") 2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection? So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our twenty-ninth number (but 4th official episode of S3), this episode of The Red Skelton Program, from 4/29/49. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it! Please show your support of the podcast by doing any of the following! To comment on how we might improve OTR-E, or give suggestions for future discussions, please write to us at f6point3@gmail.com . Put the word "Essentials" in the subject line. Your feedback means a lot to us! A review at iTunes or at your usual podcatcher would be appreciated. Next Time: An episode of Mark Trail, and another guest programmer!

Join me for happy hour fourteen with Marty Schneider, a man more internet than human! Marty is one of 25 people under the age of 70 who cares about the funny pages. Oh, and he was also turned into a comic strip villain and was the target of an online flame war by James Allen, the third author of comic strip Mark Trail. As Marty says, “it's really weird to open up the paper and see a cartoon of yourself being attacked by a fucking bear.” Yes, Marty, that is really fucking weird. This story comes full circle when Marty rightly reported James Allen for disparaging and sexually harassing Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Speaker Nancy Pelosi using his comic strip's twitter account. Here's the timeline of events, as chronicled by reddit.com/hobbydrama: The time the official Twitter account of a 74-year-old comic strip sexually harassed members of Congress. Marty's Boo ClubWallace the Brave: Wallace the Brave is the best comic in newspapers right now, hands down. The art is amazing, the gags are always good, the characters feel warm and familiar, and the parents actually seem to like being parents! Buy the books!Breaking Cat News: A comic strip about cats that report the news. Very sweet, very cute, fun watercolor art style. Buy the books!Phoebe and her Unicorn: Another fun newspaper comic strip. A little girl is friends with a unicorn. Hilarity ensues.Marty's Shares not ScaresListen to Marty's podcast, Breaking Mayberry, wherever you get podcasts! It's about Baby Boomer TV, more specifically the Andy Griffith show, and how it really fundamentally broke the brains of a generation of Americans.Watch Marty and his fiancee Sarah build LEGO kits and share neat facts every Wednesday on Twitch at BrickSmarties! It's cute, they're cute.Things Marty cares about: BIRDS! He loves birds, loves bird-ING, and wants more young birders in the world. Go find an audubon society, but more importantly, see if there's a queer birding, in color birding, feminist birding club in your area! BIRDS!Article mentioned on the pod: For the LGBTQ Community, Birding Can Be a Relief—and a Source of Anxiety: LGBTQ birders are working together to make the hobby more inclusive and welcoming, while dealing with lingering challenges of acceptance.

Jen has a dream boyfriend and a shitlist about the new Mark Trail. The ladies debate if it's ok to ask for a donated organ to be returned. Also, sometimes pubic lice will hide in your asshole when you try to Nair. A listener asks about the normalcy of farts that take a tour of your labia, and Carol tries to stump Jen with a wrestling quiz. Don't miss this week's gift guide! Dig deep in this newspaper and you will find a window into another world. It’s a nature preserve where you can be on a snow-covered mountain one minute and in a desert or by the ocean the next. It’s a place where bears and wolves vie for territory with human predators who want to smuggle drugs or assassinate the president. This, of course, is the world of Mark Trail, the hero of Lost Forest and the star of the long-running comic strip of the same name that appears here and in 174 other newspapers around the world.
