Interview by Kris PetersBrisbane/Meanjin metalcore outfit Wildheart have let their music do the talking from the outset, unafraid to tackle sensitive issues and even less distracted by the myriad of smokescreens that are rapidly punctuating the music scene as a whole.Their debut album Global Crisis – a body of work that drew attention and respect to a number of issues affecting Indigenous Australians – was named Gold Coast Music Awards Release Of The Year, also earning them a number of other awards and accolades. Not content to rest on their laurels, Wildheart followed that up last year with the brilliant single Sacred Ground before launching into 2024 with a new track Death Is All That's Left.HEAVY sat down recently with Andrew (drums) and Adam (guitar) to talk more about the exciting future for Wildheart. Death Is All That's Left was premiered via HEAVY last month, so we start by asking how the early reception has been."The reception has been awesome," Andrew smiled. "We've gotten a lot of positive reviews and comments and a lot of traction online and sharing across all the platforms. We started up a TikTok and that's been going well, so we're really happy with the response and feedback we've got. I feel like with every release we work on we're stepping it up a notch, and it felt good that it was recognised."We ask the boys to dive deeper into the track musically."We really just wanted to hone in on some more of my metalcore influence," Adam offered. "So channelling a lot of Lost Together, Lost Forever era Architects, older Parkway Drive… there's a bit of Bury Your Dead and stuff like that mixed in there too, but we wanted to write something fast and heavy."In the full interview the boys discuss the lyrical content of Death Is All That's Left and the message they are trying to get across, if they think the message is getting through with music, having a song featured on Friday Night AFL Footy, previous single Sacred Ground, if the two songs are stand-alone singles or part of something bigger, possible future musical directions, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

How are our fates in society like hikers on a mountain, climbing together? In our ever increasingly interconnected world how can one balance the rewards of a connected planet against the perils that come with it?Ian Goldin is an Oxford University Professor of Globalisation and Development, Senior Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, and the author of several books. His upcoming book is titled, Age of the City: Why our Future will be Won or Lost Together.Greg and Ian discuss intertwined nature of global connectivity and the systematic risks it poses. Ian explains how pandemics, like COVID-19, highlight these vulnerabilities, emphasizing the need for global cooperation and resilience. Greg and Ian explore modern urbanization, emphasizing how the future is increasingly urban and the challenges and opportunities this presents for sustainability and community within cities. At the end Ian leaves us inspired to adopt global stewardship in our daily lives, in a lesson he learned working with Nelson Mandela.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Is the future more urban?39:55:  Cities are going through a transformation, but one thing I would bet on is that the rate of urbanization will not decrease, and that's true in the U.S. and it's true elsewhere around the world. Where the most growth of cities is in developing countries with big challenges, the pandemic posed a big challenge, climate is a massive challenge. Cities are hotter than other places, so how they cope with heat stress, with water stress, with flooding becomes important. Ocean rise is a massive challenge for seaboard cities…So, big challenges, but the future will be more and more urban.Cities are the future40:55: Cities are the future, but making them livable and sustainable is a massive challenge; getting to zero carbon will make them resilient to climate pressures. Why do people flock to urban Centers for choice and community?45:37: People want to be near other people who are like them, creative, and where they'll have high efficiency. What we find in cities is that we have many more options. We can choose the lifestyle we want, whether you are young or old, have sexual preferences, religious preferences, fashion preferences, music preferences, or food preferences. All of these things can be satisfied in a city, which they never could in a small town, let alone in the countryside. And so, the more that we move into a world where our own preferences become important and we can be anywhere, we're going to be in a big city because that's where we're going to satisfy our preferences. Is there always going to be a trade off that when we increase connectedness, we are necessarily  increasing risks?03:12: Entanglement is the underbelly, the other side of connectivity, and I think it happens at all dimensions. If you think about it, one's own life, the more you get to know other people and get involved in them, it brings great joy and many benefits, but it can also bring great sadness. And I think it's like that at a macro scale as well, that we now increasingly recognize that we are entangled around the world in multiple ways. And that means that we can benefit enormously. A vaccine can be developed in one place and be around the world, or the worldwide web can join us all. We can hear new music or fashion, go to other places, meet incredible people, and benefit from incredible ideas, but we are also more vulnerable as a result. And so the great challenge of globalization, I think, is how does one harvest the upside and manage the downside.Show Links:Recommended Resources:GlobalizationSuez CanalHenry PaulsonDeregulationWorld BankOECDGiovanni Pico della MirandolaRenaissanceNiccolò MachiavelliHouse of MediciGirolamo SavonarolaMartin LutherJohn CalvinSocratesAristotleHumanismNelson MandelaGuest Profile:IanGoldin.orgFaculty Profile at the University of OxfordWikipedia ProfileHis Work:Amazon Author PageAge of the City: Why our Future will be Won or Lost TogetherThe Butterfly Defect: How Globalization Creates Systemic Risks, and What to Do about ItRescue: From Global Crisis to a Better WorldAge of Discovery: Navigating the Risks and Rewards of Our New RenaissanceExceptional People: How Migration Shaped Our World and Will Define Our FutureDevelopment: A Very Short IntroductionIs the Planet Full?Divided Nations: Why global governance is failing, and what we can do about itThe Pursuit of Development: Economic Growth, Social Change and IdeasGlobalization for Development: Meeting New Challenges

She eats, sleeps and breathes travel and wants to inspire other families to take epic trips with their kids. Follow Dawn on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitterand Instagram. TIPS FOR VISITING ATHENS, GREECE WITH KIDS If you are planning a trip to Greece, you should think about spending at least ten days there but it would be best to be able to spend two full weeks. You will be able to see a lot in ten days but you may feel like it is a little bit short. Two full weeks would be the optimal amount of time, especially if you have never been before. Traveling to Greece in the summer time is very hot, especially in August! Plus this is also peak season to travel there, so the cost will be higher and it will be very crowded. May/June would be a good time to go as well as September/October when it will still be warm but budgetwise your money will go a bit farther and you will be able to do more. If you are really worried about budget you could also book your trip in the winter time and get some incredible deals on accommodations. When you travel to Athens you should make sure to see: Acropolis of Athens- which has the remains of many ancient buildings with historic significance and great architecture. You will get a lot more out of your visit if you go with a guide. There is also a museum at the bottom that is fairly new and they have great models made out of Legos of the buildings, along with scavenger hunt activities, so your kids will love it. The Parthenon(probably Greece’s most important historical sight) - located in the center. If you are into trying new foods you should think about taking a food tour. If you don’t want to do a tour there some markets you can go to that have food as well. Changing of the Guardis also a great sight to see and is very different from the Changing of the Guard in England. They have very elaborate uniforms and this happens every hour at Syntagma Square. Mount Lycabettushas great views of Athens as the only real high point of the area. You take a funicular, which is a mountain cable car that goes up at about a 45º angle. The track is 689 feet long but the journey only takes about 3 minutes. Renting a car a driving to some other areas can give you some great sights. For instance there is the Corinth Canalwhich was built so that ships could go through instead of going around a big chunk of land. If you are into experiencing an adrenaline rush you can even bungee jump off the canal. If not it may be a great spot for you and your family to get out and stretch your legs while you watch the jumpers. If you are planning to travel outside of Athens, you may want to take a trip to Olympiawhich is the birthplace of the Olympics! There isn’t much left of the structure but open greenery and some seating. Another place to visit is Delphiwhich is one of the most important greek sights. This was the place people would come to visit an oracle and is featured heavily in the Percy Jackson books. This sight also has some great views of the area. As a day trip from the more central part of Athens you can visit the Temple of Poseidonin Sounio. This is also featured heavily in the Percy Jackson books and has some great views of the ocean since it was built on hill right by the edge of the ocean. People in Greece are very friendly and helpful. Just what you would think with their greek hospitality! Renting a car can be a bit overwhelming and the price to rent a car is a bit expensive but if you have a larger family or are traveling with a larger group compared to paying for public transportation costs and just the freedom of having the car this may be worth it for you. But if you are planning to stay in one general area it may not be worth the price. Be aware that there are actual quite a few toll roads when you are driving that you may not expect and they are all cash so be aware of this before taking off on a long drive and plan accordingly with cash. Tipping is not really customary, but you can always round up a bit on your bill. All the food is very reasonable priced and the main dishes are quite large so you may only need to order a few dishes with a family of five and share between everyone. Be careful with taxis, you may come across a situation were you can get ripped off. Taxis have meters so make sure that your driver is using the meter and if there isn’t one you may want to get out of the taxi. They are also quick particular with the amount of people they take saying they are only allowed to take four people and if you have five in your family they will possibly bargain with you on a price and not give you change. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Dawn loves to wear her Toad & Co dress paired with a scarf and her entire family loves to wear their Keenshoes. Her husband is very particular about his shorts and he loves his Quicksilver Waterman shorts. The 16 track collection pulls together a hefty stack of rarities from the '80s, including the band's first single, early demo recordings, live tracks and all of the songs from their self-titled debut EP, marking the first time that it has been available on physical media since its release on vinyl in 1982. As Peterson told us during the conversation, the group's archives were, as she put it with a laugh, "far-flung." "We had to dig up a lot of this stuff," she says. "Luckily, my brother, who is an audiophile and a recording engineer/masterer, he had a lot of the early versions, because he actually recorded some of the early demos with us. For instance, the 'Bitchen Summer' track, he was a teenager, I think, at the time. So he helped us track down a lot of stuff we had. Bill Inglot [also] helped, you know, we literally had to find the original masters of the EP." It was that EP that provided a good amount of the inspiration for putting this collection together. "It sort of sparked from a long-seeded desire to have the EP available again. In my heart, I just wanted it available in a physical form," she says. "We just wanted to sort of reintroduce it to the world, because we’re proud of it and it was really the birth of the Bangles in a lot of ways. It just kind of encapsulates some of the things that brought of us together initially musically and it has been recently something we’ve been playing. We’ve been dipping into this collection for our live shows in the last year or so, just because it’s so much fun to play. It expanded from there and we looked into what exists of our archives and found some other examples of ‘baby Bangles’ stuff.” We discuss those early beginnings during today's interview and Peterson also shares what she's got on tap musically, both with the Bangles and in her own work outside of the group and towards the end of our chat, there's a great story about how the Bangles' version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" came together with an interesting twist that might surprise you. The Bangles will be playing shows later this summer and as Peterson tells us, they've got some other things in the works as well that folks can look forward to. Fans can stay in tune via the band's official website and Facebook page to find out more details as things are announced. This week we welcome Rick Springfield to the podcast. We spoke about the Stripped Down show he’s going to be playing here in Cleveland on Valentine’s Day and also his new album, Rocket Science. The album finds Rick experimenting with some country sounds and instrumentation and features collaborations with Tad Kubler of the Hold Steady and Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts on a couple of songs. Rick wrote the bulk of the album with longtime collaborator Matt Bissonette and as you’ll hear in the interview, he tells us, “It’s still a pop album, what I’ve recorded. But there’s a lot of layers and there’s some very cool things, pedal steel and banjo and some fiddle stuff. You know, the guitars are still a dominant thing, but there’s some interesting textures that the [other instruments] add.” Rocket Science is another solid entry into Rick’s catalog and he’s made some great albums over the past decade, going back to his Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance album in 2004, all of the way through Songs for the End of the World, which was released in 2012. The new album will be released on February 19 and Rick will be previewing songs from the record (we still call 'em "records" here) along with his hits during a Yahoo! live broadcast of his concert on February 12. He’s doing a few in-store performances leading up to the album release, where he’ll be playing a few songs and also signing albums. Cleveland gets one of those in-store dates, which will happen on February 14 at the Exchange in Parma Heights prior to his show at the Hard Rock Rocksino that same night. Fans will be able to buy the new album early at those in-store performances before it goes on sale officially on the regular release date. It's always a pleasure to speak with Rick and talk music. As I mentioned during the podcast, I've interviewed him a few times. Here's a link to our 2013 chat and also the story/interview that I wrote in 2014.
