Since retiring from gymnastics, he's turned his creative talents into photography and videography to build a successful career of his own. And this is his story.

We are back with another Artist Spotlight with Louis Smith & Ryan Wood of Kendall Street Company! Virginia's Kendall Street Company are no strnagers to having a wild time. The genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble has drawn varied comparisons to the dynamic jams of Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic, songwriting prowess of John Prine, experimental psychedelia of Pink Floyd, progressive jazz-infused rock of Frank Zappa, and off-color humor of Ween and They Might Be Giants. Including elements of crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedic bits, haphazard choreography, musical improvisation, and surprise musical guests, each Kendall Street Company concert is a n experience unlike any other. You'll laugh, you'll cry. Just remember to stay hydrated. We sit down with Louis and Ryan for a chat about: creating the new album 'Separation 95' and what life has been like for them since creating this new work. Memories of shows where they left feeling on top of the world and also laid flat. If it's possible to know that you killed it onstage or not, in the moment. Some antics from Hulaween this year. How Grateful Dead fans can be persnickety. The creation process behind some of their amazing videos. If Becka's Dad is an actual person or not. In 2008 Louis Smith became the British male gymnast to win an Olympic medal in a century. This inspired a generation of young British male artistic gymnasts that have since gone on to win eight more Olympic medals alongside countless World, European and Commonwealth silverware. Louis was part of history again in London 2012 winning the first team medal in 100 years and followed that up with a Pommel horse silver medal in the O2 arena. Louis became a household name after his Olympic success in 2012 and he went on to be crowned the winner of strictly come dancing later that year. His Rio 2016 Olympic Pommel horse silver medal brought his career total to twenty major championships honours but it was also tainted in controversy. Louis was accused of unsportsmanlike behaviour by the mainstream media and a few months later faced one of the biggest challenges yet when a video of him was leaked to the press. In recent years he's taken a step back from the spotlight and he is now a proud father to a little girl alongside his partner. Louis is a true sports personality. And this is his story.

Today I'm talking about exercise and sport, with model and campaigner, Shareefa J. ADHD is incredibly common amongst elite athletes, and yet for the majority of sufferers, it makes it doubly hard to perform. I was 37 when it was first suggested I might have ADHD, so I obviously went straight to Google to see what kind of company I was in. I landed on an article about how common ADHD is in elite athletes — Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, Nicola Adams, gymnast Louis Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal are all in the club — and thought that perhaps everyone had been wrong about my diagnosis after all. Because I can NOT enjoy team sports, I can't throw or catch convincingly and I fall over my uncooperative limbs a lot. I struggle to follow instructions and routines, and I have never - not once - got the promised endorphin rush to outweigh the nausea and boredom of running. Years of criticism from PE teachers didn't help, and now I'm torn between wanting to live a long and healthy life, and not wanting to spend a moment of it working out. Shareefa is one of the people who make me want to keep trying to find my 'thing', though. Shareefa is a model, mental-health campaigner, presenter and body positivity advocate. She was diagnosed with ADHD when she was 24, and shares helpful tips on dealing with the condition on her Instagram feed. Shareefa shares her top tips for making exercise work for you, taking into account all the challenges ADHD can bring to maintaining a healthy routine. She and I discuss what doesn't work, too, and discover a shared dislike of school PE. Shareefa also reveals her secret to making a habit stick, how she feels about exercise today and how her ADHD impacts her sense of self. You can find Shareefa here. THE EXPERT Dr Jo Steer is a chartered clinical psychologist working with children in Surrey, and the author of Understanding ADHD in Girls and Women Please note, your first port of call if you think you might have ADHD should be your GP. In the meantime, you can find more information here: The ADHD Foundation Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome to Roadcase!! We are stoked to have Louis Smith of Kendall Street Company on the show this week. Louis is a fun-loving dude with a quirky sense of humor reflected in whimsical songwriting and off-the-wall album concepts designed to keep it light and fun but with super-intriguing Prog Rock and Jam Groove elements. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
From 1968 through 1983, Shindana Toys designed and manufactured dolls that looked like real black people. Their motto was: Dolls Made by a Dream. Shindana, which means competitor in Swahili, trained and employed doll makers and became the nation's largest manufacturer of black dolls and games. Operation Bootstrap (OB) was formed in 1965 by two African American gentlemen. In an attempt to build the community, provide job training, and jobs for community residents, Louis Smith and Robert Hall are said to have organized OB with a $1,000 loan from an AA businessman. ********* My name is Louis Shelton Smith III, my Father Louis S Smith II, was co-founder of Operation Bootstrap along with his partner Robert Hall. He "talked" the owners of Mattel, out of $200,000, to start Shindana Toys, because he thought Black kids needed a positive self image. The 1st doll they made, Baby Nancy, was selected for admission to the Toy Hall Of Fame last year. Oh, the stories I could tell you!!!!! ****

Detroit-area jazz drummer and drum educator Sean Dobbins has been playing since he was a very young man. As a student in the Ann Arbor, Michigan school system, he was fortunate to study under Louis Smith, an amazing trumpet player and long time Blue Note recording artist. Influenced by jazz greats like Ed Thigpen, Elvin Jones and his favorite drummer – Art Blakey - Sean has performed with an amazing number of artist over the years, including Bennie Golson, Frank Morgan, Tad Weed and Mose Allison, to name just a few. Interestingly, Sean is our third interview with a person whose played with Mose Allison! While Sean keeps busy with numerous gigs and recording sessions, he also excels as a drum educator, a career move that came as a bit of a surprise for Sean who, early on, never dreamt he would teach. He’s not only an Applied Professor of Jazz Percussion at Wayne State University, but also the Director of the Ann Arbor Public School’s Summer Jazz Program. It was great talking to Sean about his approach to drums and in our interview he offers a great deal of insight for the new and returning drummer.

This was a gathering of a group of then young men, mostly in their 20s in January 1959 in New York for this informal get-together. All of these men were now living in New York and had established themselves on the national Jazz scene. Several were part of some great working bands and some were freelancing. They all came together on this recording. All of these men were born and had their first early musical experiences in their hometown of Memphis Tennessee. On trumpets: Louis Smith and Booker Little. On saxophones: George Coleman on tenor saxophone and Frank Strozier on alto. The great Phineas Newborn on piano, Newborn's brother Calvin on guitar. On bass George Joyner who became Jamil Nasser when he adopted Islam. On drums, the reliable and tasteful Charles Crosby. Only four tunes make up this date and all of the musicians are featured to a greater or lesser extent in long solos. Phineas Newborn carries "After Hours". Frank Strozier is featured on "Star Eyes". Everyone gets a chance on "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" and "Blue 'n' Boogie" These four tunes were all jam session favourites and everyone scores a hit on each one. Sit back and enjoy, "The Young Men from Memphis".

THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW If you need inspiration, are a coach of a gymnast who doesn’t quite get it, or need New Year’s resolution help, this is the episode for you. Chris Brooks has been through all the things and his message is very powerful. From the great Texas gymnastics tradition, he overcame personal tragedy and a horrific injury to make the Rio Olympic team at age 29. He had grip lock as a junior, but recovered and won an NCAA Championship at Oklahoma. While in college, his father, who got him into gymnastics and was a gymnast himself, was killed in a car accident. Chris was named Olympic team alternate in 2012. Then he made the all-around final at the Rio Olympic Games just a few months before his 30th birthday. We discuss: The full Cheeseburgers on Horse story The famous hug between John Orozco and Chris Brooks after being named to the 2016 Olympic Team. How he peaked and gave up excuses to finally make the Olympic team. Is the U.S. men's team really not doing well or is it actually improving? Was the judging fair in Rio? What does he think of the new changes to the Code of Points? His grip lock accident. (Article on preventing grip lock) Cheering hard: Did he ever get in trouble for being too loud? What was it like being coached by Olympic Champion, Rustom Sharipov? What to do about Winter Cup? Does he dislike being objectified (by the screaming gym mom's at Winter Cup)? The 2015 floor faceplant. Performing in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. His future plans. THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW Danell Leyva is back on the show (listen to his first appearance here)! The eight-time World and Olympic medalist was the only American man to earn a medal for the U.S. at the 2012 Olympic Games with a bronze in the all-around. He did that after not even being named to the team! When John Orozco was hurt, he moved from Rio alternate to team member. He was the 2011 world champion on the parallel bars, defending silver medalist going in to 2015 Glasgow World, but failed to reach the podium. He came back a year later at the 2016 Olympics in Rio to win parallel bars and horizontal bar silver. We discuss: Why dog bites are obviously good luck for him. For Donald Trump it was an 11 year old dusty tape that appeared from the archives. For Sam Allardyce it was a sting by undercover reporters. For the Olympic gymnast Louis Smith it was a video leaked on to the internet. All of them conversations they thought were private becoming embarrassingly public, with varying degrees of consequences. We all say things in private we wouldn't want made public, so what right to privacy should those in the public eye be entitled? Is it a simple case that we have a right to know if it tells us about the character of people who have power or who are asking us to trust them? If that's the case how do explain the myriad of examples from minor sporting celebrities to victims of stings by fake sheiks? Should we put them in the same category? We may think their views are unattractive, even offensive, but shouldn't they be allowed to express them in private, like the rest of us, with some confidence that they'll remain private? What right do we have to know? Would the world be a better place if we never said anything privately we wouldn't want made public? In our clamour to expose and condemn are we creating an unhealthy reality gap between what our leaders and politicians are allowed to say and what they actually think? Or has the digital age rightly blown apart the tight and elitist clubbable privacy that was once so much part of our society? Chaired by Michael Buerk with Anne McElvoy, Michael Portillo, Giles Fraser and Matthew Taylor. Witnesses are Prof Steven Barnett, Prof Josh Cohen, Paul Connew and Tom Chatfield.

Louis Smith briefly burst on the New York Jazz scene in the late 1950s. He recorded two magnificent albums for Blue Note(the second is the Jazz Feature tonight) and appeared as a sideman on several more for Blue Note and United Artists. He also was briefly a member of Horace Silver's Quintet replacing the departing Art Farmer. However for Louis and his family, security was important and the New York Jazz life was a risky business even back in the 50s. Smith, who had a university degree took a teaching post at The University of Michigan plus an extra gig teaching at high school in Ann Arbor. He didn't record again until 1978 and continued until early 2001. A stroke ended his playing career in 2006 but he still teaches and mentors young players in the Detroit area. Tonight's Jazz Feature is Smith's second date for Blue Note in March 1958. It's a solid, swinging date with a great cast with pre-Monk Charlie Rouse who is on fire here on tenor saxophone with a powerhouse rhythm section with Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. Several Smith originals and heard plus a couple of standards and a Charlie Parker tune called "Au Privave". This is a solid representation of Louis Smith's great talents and Jazz music as it was in swingin' New York in the 1950s.

This is an incredible debut album by a great trumpeter who was very briefly on the Jazz scene in the late 1950s. He left the Jazz world to teach at the University of Michigan. Does Sarah Harding have poor cardio or is she just unaware that her mouth is hanging open throughout her performance? John speaks frankly about the highs and lows since the Olympics, and the struggle to regain his mojo. We discuss: The pressure he put on himself to support his family. The legendary Louis Smith was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 20, 1931 and although felled by a stroke and not able to play anymore is still alive and teaching select students. Smith burst upon the New York scene in the late 50's and made two classic albums for Blue Note Records that were for years collector's items. When Blue Note released the newly discovered "Horace Silver Quintet Live at Newport 1958" with Louis Smith in the band, he replaced Art Farmer and was replaced by Blue Mitchell. The Horace Silver recording won all kinds of awards and once again put Louis Smith on the map. Smith's second and final recording for Blue Note called 'Smithville' is the Feature tonight. Mr. Smith picked a great band for this recording with Charlie Rouse(pre-Monk) on tenor saxophone, the legendary Sonny Clark on piano and the ideal rhythm section of Paul Chambers on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. Smith plays originals and standards on this fine date which reflects the high artistic levels of Blue Note recordings from the late 50's.
