Episode #36 In this episode - Lydia Manning, PhD CEO and Co-Founder of Circle of Life Consulting, Inc. talks us through her knowledge and expertise on aging. She gives us something to think about and acknowledges the power of our mindset surrounding the actual process of aging. We learn that our mindset correlated to aging has shown impactful feedback in helping to extend our viable, healthy years of life. Come take a listen as we are guided through the perception of aging and how we can all better move through the process in a more healthy manner for ourselves and our loved ones. You will not want to miss out the unique look at the one thing we all do and see it through eyes of her lens backed by the research that surrounds it. We need to dismantle ageism in society and media. Making fun of people for being old is socially acceptable when it shouldn't be. Intergenerational relationships are important to help reduce age segregation. Language matters - we need more positive language around aging. Terms like "elder" or "older adult" are preferred over "elderly" or "senior citizen". Planning for your older years is an act of self-love. Have conversations with loved ones about wishes and values. Research shows that simply reframing your mindset around aging starting at late as 50 can add 7-8 healthy years to your lifespan. This is as impactful as quitting smoking or increasing physical activity. Highlights the power of mindset and that we can shape our experience of aging. Ageism is socially acceptable - it's common in media and comedy to make fun of people for being old. This perpetuates negative stereotypes and prolongs improvement in how we view aging. We need to seek more intergenerational relationships and integration to help reduce ageism. Preferred terms are "older adult", "elder", "elderhood". Avoid language that groups all older adults together or makes blanket assumptions. Planning for your older years is an act of self-love. Have open conversations with loved ones about values, wishes, fears around aging and end-of-life. We will all face infirmity and death eventually. Making plans helps reduce burden on loved ones later on. To find out more or get in touch with Lydia Manning, PhD head on over to her websites. Lydia Manning is a comedian based out of Portland, Oregon. This is the second half of the two-episode comedian special. I hadn't really had any comedians until now, and they drove down from Portland to do a show in Eugene so I spoke with them while they were in town!A former staple of the Wilmington, North Carolina comedy scene, Lydia was a regular opener at the Dead Crow Comedy Room, host in the Cape Fear Comedy Festival, writer/cast member for Wilmington's live late-night talk show, Late Fear with Wills Maxwell, and host of the monthly stand-up showcase, Sips & Giggles. Now a new and unique voice in the Portland comedy community, she is quickly becoming a sought after entertainer, performing throughout the Pacific Northwest. Lydia's comedy is dynamic, smart, and absurd, frequently pulling audiences out of their comfort zones and into her universe. She has been a part of the She-Devil Comedy Festival and North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival, and has performed with some extremely cool comedians, including Jay Pharoah, Mary Mack, and Arj Barker. She comes on the show to talk about what it's like being a woman in the comedy scene!Reach out to her through her website: https://www.lydiamanningcomedy.com/ And through Twitter: https://twitter.com/lydiawomanning Also reach out to me through Twitter: https://twitter.com/TygerGruber Subscribe and leave a review!
