Jaime might've bitten off more than he can chew with standing vigil over his father for seven days and nights. While battling sleep, he recalls his last conversation with Rhaegar Targaryen as well as his recent one with the chief undergaoler. He's visited by Cersei and again rejects her plea to be Hand of the King. Finally, he brokers a lunch for Cersei and feeds her exact steps to success. Simon and Mackelly wonder if she'll still muck it up.Chapter Review:While Jaime Lannister stands vigil over his father's body, he thinks of how if he'd known that Tyrion was going to kill their father he'd have stopped him. He thinks of the conversation he had with the chief undergaoler of the Red Keep dungeons. He gets the same story Cersei got regarding Rugen, the missing undergaoler. Jaime is furious to learn that the turnkeys who fell asleep the night of Tyrion's escape were murdered, by order of the queen.Said queen appears in person, as Jaime stands vigil. She's dressed as a commoner to escape notice. She says Kevan refused her offer of Hand of the King and that he knows about Jaime and Cersei's relationship. She begs Jaime to reconsider taking the role of Hand of the King. Jaime again refuses. Again, in no uncertain terms. A furious Cersei stalks off after unleashing a barrage of angry words toward Jaime. When the sun comes up, mourners again flood the Great Sept of Baelor. Tywin's body has continued to decay and the odor has intensified greatly. When Queen Cersei and King Tommen approach the corpse, Tommen gags and runs for the door. Jaime goes after him and consoles the little king. Queen Cersei arrives and admonishes her son for embarrassing her. Mace Tyrell is close on her heels. Jaime sets up a lunch between Cersei and Mace, to Cersei's annoyance. But Jaime explains that it's an opportunity to send Mace on a task out of the city, where he might get himself killed.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. Busy day for Queen Cersei. She fends off mourners expressing regret and vying for her favor and works to keep the Tyrells off the Small Council. She bonds with Qyburn before finally having a highly contentious dinner with her uncle. Mackelly and Simon are in shock that Kevan went there.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei Lannister and King Tommen kneel before her father Tywin's body. The odor emanating from the late Hand of the King is not missed by those in attendance, so all are glad when the prayers end. Afterward, mourners approach Cersei to express condolences. Falyse Stokeworth offers that if her sister Lollys has a son, they'd like to name him Tywin. Cersei shoots the idea down.  She congratulates Lancel on his betrothal and his new lordship. He's not thrilled about either. He met with the high septon. Cersei reminds him of the power of silent prayer. She's approached by Mace Tyrell. He's angling to be named Hand of the King, but says his uncle Garth is on his way to King's Landing to serve as Master of Coin. Cersei has no interest in another Tyrell on the Small Council, so lies and says she's offered the role to Gyles Rosby. Mace is shocked, but his mother steers him away. Later,  she asks Rosby to be Master of Coin and to act as though it was offered yesterday.Back in the Red Keep, Qyburn says he's found a gold coin in the missing gaoler Rugen's chamber. It's from the Reach, which causes Cersei to question whether the Tyrells were involved in the plot to free Tyrion. Cersei plans to call for the headsman for Gregor Clegane. Qyburn asks to move Gregor to the dungeons, to continue to work with him.Her uncle Kevan arrives for dinner. Cersei asks him to be Tommen's Hand of the King. Tyrion stands trial for the murder of the king. The prosecution has no end of witnesses, while Tyrion has none. But at the 11th hour a glimmer of hope appears. Mackelly and Simon weigh the scales of justice.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister languishes for days in a Red Keep tower cell. He's well-treated and fed as befits his station, but the crime of which he's accused holds only one possible punishment. He's getting advice and daily visits from his uncle Kevan, but neither of them is very optimistic of his chances. Cersei is amassing a deluge of witnesses to testify against him. Tyrion pins his hopes on trial by combat, but knowing that the opponent will be Gregor Clegane, Bronn demurs. The trial, before a three-judge panel of Tywin, Mace Tyrell, and Oberyn Martell, goes very badly for Tyrion. The witnesses either exaggerate, downright lie, or in the case of Varys: accurately report Tyrion's various threats and comments on the dead king. Kevan advises confession and the Night's Watch, but Tyrion doesn't trust his father's mercy. On the final night of the trial, Tyrion is visited in his cell by Oberyn. He's not necessarily there to reassure Tyrion, but knowing that he's doomed he's hoping to get the truth about his sister's death. Tyrion confirms some suspicions: while it was the now dead Lorch who dispatched Princess Rhaenys, it was The Mountain who raped and murdered Elia and killed baby Aegon. But Tyrion denies that Tywin ordered the deaths. Oberyn throws Tyrion a lifeline. He'll be his champion in trial by combat against Clegane.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister. Former Hand of the King.Tywin Lannister - Tyrion's father, Hand of the King.Kevan Lannister - Tyrion's uncle. In King's Landing to seek justice for his murdered sister Elia and her children.Lord Varys - Master of Whisperers in King's Landing. Has served multiple monarchs as chief spy. Tyrion has a busy day. He surveys post-battle repair needs, meets with Symon Silver Tongue, inspects two new family heirlooms, is told by his father to do the impossible, gets marital advice from his father, and participates in a discussion regarding the Night's Watch. None of it is going to make his life any easier. Simon and Mackelly pour him a tall cup of Arbor Gold.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister surveys the damages done during the battle. The repair costs will well exceed what the crown has in its coffers. Before returning to the Red Keep, he and Bronn make a detour to visit the singer Symon Silver Tongue, in a run-down wine sink. Tyrion offers to pay the man to take his act on a tour of Essos. However, Symon instead tells Tyrion that if Tyrion can't get him a spot in the singing competition at the royal wedding, he'll sing a song about Tyrion's affair with Shea for all to hear. Afterward, Tyrion tells Bronn to make sure Symon's body is never found.Next, Tyrion learns he's been summoned by his father. Tywin Lannister shows Tyrion two new Valyrian steel swords he's commissioned. One is for Joff and the other for Jamie. Next order of business is the city repairs. Tyrion reports what he's found and that there's not enough coin to pay for the repairs. Tywin tells him he'll find the coin or Tywin will find someone who can. The topic then turns toward Tyrion's marriage to Sansa Stark. Tywin wants it consummated immediately. Tyrion asks about his father's betrothal plans for Cersei and Willas Tyrell. Tywin informs him that Mace Tyrell rejected the notion. As Tywin begins to mention replacement suitors, Grand Maester Pycelle arrives. He's gotten a letter from Castle Black asking for more men. Tywin couldn't care less about the Night's Watch's woes. However, he does see an opportunity to put a Lannister loyalist in charge of the Black Brothers. Sansa gets fitted for a new dress and Ser Dontos warns her that her new friends the Tyrells are as bad as the Lannisters. Simon and Mackelly get their haute-couture on.Chapter Review:Sansa Stark gets measured for a new dress. The seamstress has been sent by Queen Cersei Lannister. Sansa doesn't trust the motives for this largesse, but she does need a new frock. She's grown since moving to King's Landing and is busting out of her Winterfell dresses in eye-catching ways. The dressmaker is coy about what color the dress will be.Sansa continues to try to warn Margaery Tyrell against marrying King Joffrey Baratheon. Margeary thinks that having her brother Ser Loras Tyrell as a member of the Kingsguard is protection enough. Sansa thinks the older girl is underestimating the evil and depravity of her betrothed.Sansa shares the Tyrell's plan, that Sansa marries Willas Tyrell the heir to Highgarden, with Ser Dontos. He is not a fan. She'd be trading one trap for another, the Tyrells are the Lannisters with flowers, and his own plan is already in place. See it through, wear the hairnet to Joffrey and Margaery's wedding, and he'll have her out of here and truly free. Sansa chats with various Tyrells, who are making a positive impression in King's Landing. She's lured into being honest about King Joffrey, but the Tyrell women don't seem mad, indeed they offer her a way out of King's Landing. Simon and Mackelly consider the proposal.Chapter Review:Sansa Stark mulls whether to accept an invitation to dine with her future queen, Margaery Tyrell. She knows she must, but she's struggling to understand why she's invited. Her mood brightens when none other than Ser Loras Tyrell arrives to escort her to the Maidenvault, where the Tyrells have been housed. Sansa's smitten and cannot believe they are touching arms while they walk. The pleasant conversation sours somewhat when he doesn't remember giving her the red rose at the Hand's Tourney, and she mentions that he unsearted Robar Royce, who he has since killed in battle. She has better luck with the female Tyrells, notably Margaery and her grandmother Lady Olenna Tyrell. They charm her and pointedly ask for the truth about Joffrey. After some hesitation, Sansa admits that he is a monster. Both ladies take the news in their stride. Furthermore they suggest that Sansa move to Highgarden and wed the heir Willas Tyrell. Sansa watches as Tywin Lannister takes control in King's Landing. The Tyrells fully embrace the new alliance, the Lannisters dole out rewards to loyalists, punish their enemies, and pat themselves on the back. King Joffrey drops her for another, putting Sansa on cloud nine. But Dontos brings her crashing back to earth. Simon and Mackelly try to break her fall. Chapter Review:Sansa Stark stands in attendance as the Lannister family congratulate themselves and their allies. Lord Tywin Lannister takes over as Hand of the King. Mace, Garlan, and Loras Tyrell ask favors of the king, all are granted. The biggest ask being that Joffrey put Sansa aside and marry Margaery Tyrell. After that, it's time to split up the winning from the Battle of the Blackwater. New lords are made, including Lancel Lannister and Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish. More than six hundred men are knighted. Finally, the Stannis Baratheon supporters are dragged before the king. They're made to beg his forgiveness, to retain their titles and lands. Most do, but some choose death by vocally disparaging the boy king. When all the glad-handing, promotions, and begging for forgiveness are over, Sansa returns to her chamber. She can hardly remember a time she's been this happy. She won't have to marry Joffrey. She doesn't know what will happen to her, but it has to be better than marrying that monster. Ser Dontos Hollard disagrees. He thinks nothing has changed. But he's set a date for their escape: Joff's and Margaery's wedding day. He also has a present for her, in the form of a beautiful hair net. He claims it holds justice for her father.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Formerly betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon. News of Renly's death has reached the small council in King's Landing. They dispatch Littlefinger to treat with Loras Tyrell - the leader of the faction that hasn't pledged fealty to Stannis. The offer? Renly's widow Margaery Tyrell to marry Joffrey and be queen. Simon and Mackelly consider the implications. Chapter Review: Varys shares the reliable news that Renly is dead and many unreliable accounts of who did it. Tyrion is disappointed, he'd hoped that the Baratheons' fight would drag on for months. The bad news is compounded by the rapid switching allegiance (to Stannis) of the majority of the noble houses. The slightly better news for team-Lannister is that Ser Loras Tyrell has ridden off taking maybe 20 percent of the lords with him. And Ser Courtney Penrose, castellan of Storm's End, fearing a trick, will not open the doors to Stannis until he sees Renly's body - which has gone missing. So how to turn this dissenting minority to the Lannister cause? Tyrion suggests marriage. Should Renly's young widow Margaery (Tyrell) marry Joffrey, then the two wealthiest houses in Westeros would be conjoined. The Lords of the Reach who have now pledged to Stannis would have to reconsider. And the balance of power might just be tipped. After some debate, Petyr Baelish is chosen to take the message to Loras and Margaery. He grifts for every bit of money and influence he can get out of the chore. But Tyrion grudgingly admits he's the right man for the job. After the meeting, Cersei thanks Tyrion for his efforts and kisses him on the forehead. He could not be more suspicious.  Characters/Places/Names/Events: Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon and twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon.King Joffrey Baratheon - Bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to Queen Cersei and Ser Jamie Lannister. Cat tries to keep the peace between Renly and Stannis Baratheon. Neither is willing to budge an inch, so Cat and the rest prepare for war. Simon and Mackelly predict the likely outcome. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark is first to reach the hill where the two sides will parley. She cannot see the sea, but can smell it in the air. In the distance, the giant fortress of Storm's End looms with Stannis Baratheon's small army arrayed before it. The siege looks entirely pointless. Stannis arrives and exhibits the coldness he's famous for when expressing his sorrow about Ned's death. He's not there to make friends (king's don't have friends, only subjects and enemies), and reminds Cat that Robb will be next once he's dealt with Renly and Joffrey. Renly arrives and the brothers exchange unpleasantries. Each offers the other the lordship of Storm's End if he'll support the other's claim to the throne. Neither will. So the talks come to nothing. As she leaves Melisandre warns Renly to look to his sins. War is inevitable and Cat wants no part in it, but Renly refuses her request to leave. He wants her to witness his army's power and his ruthlessness in putting down dissent (even from his own kin) so that Robb will hear of it. She goes to a nearby sept to pray. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Widow of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Stannis Baratheon - Elder brother of Renly Baratheon, rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Renly Baratheon - Robert and Stannis' youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End. Husband to Margaery Tyrell. Claimant to the Iron Throne. Margaery Tyrell - Daughter of Mace Tyrell, Lord Paramount of the Reach. Sister to Ser Loras Tyrell. Wife to King Renly Baratheon. She is reputed to resemble Lyanna Stark. Ser Loras Tyrell - Knight of Flowers. Youngest son of Mace Tyrell. Dashing and renowned swordsman. Brienne of Tarth - Tall and homely daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth the Evenstar. She is an expert sword fighter. Member of King Renly's Rainbow Guard. Randyll Tarly - Lord of Horn Hill. Father of Samwell Tarly. Melisandre - A priestess of the red god R'hellor and trusted advisor to King Stannis. Cat arrives in the Reach to discuss an alliance with King Renly Baratheon. She finds him amidst a tremendous host, playing at being king with feasting and tournaments. His nonchalance is punctured by news that his brother Stannis has besieged, not King's Landing, but the Baratheon seat of Storm's End. Mackelly and Simon consider the internecine implications. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark awakes from sweet dreams of her family reunited, to the reality that she's headed further away from them. She and her honor/body-guard have skirted the troubles in the Riverlands and arrived safely in the Reach. Today will see them reach the upper Mander River and the Roseroad. She eschews a lavish breakfast to speed things along. They're spied and escorted into Renly's camp. The army is larger than she'd imagined, with banners from all over the Reach and the Stormlands. At the center, is the town of Bitterbridge and noise of a great tournament. Cat watches as an unknown knight defeats Ser Loras Tyrell to win the grand melee. The knight is revealed to be Brienne, the tall and homely daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth. Brienne joins Renly's Rainbow Guard. Cat jousts (figuratively, and) politely with Renly who doesn't mind if Robb claims the title of king, as long as he ultimately bends the knee to Renly as the King of the Seven Kingdoms. He takes her to the tower so they can look upon his mighty host. She is not unimpressed. But his apparent primacy is challenged when news arrives that his brother Stannis has landed on the mainland with the focus of his attack, not King's Landing, but Storm's End. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Widow of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Renly Baratheon - Robert and Stannis' youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End. Husband to Margaery Tyrell. Claimant to the Iron Throne. Margaery Tyrell - Daughter of Mace Tyrell, Lord of the Reach. Brienne of Tarth - Tall and homely daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth the Evenstar. She is an expert fighter. Member of King Renly's Rainbow Guard. Randyll Tarly - Lord of Horn Hill. Father of Samwell Tarly. Ser Barristan Selmy - Ousted Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Location unknown. Bitterbridge - Town in the Reach, where the Roseroad crosses the upper Mander River. Roseroad - Road linking King's Landing to Highgarden. Brotherhood Without Manners, your favorite full spoiler reread podcast of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, is back with another chapter from Storm of Swords. This episode we read Tyrion 3 as he attends his first small council meeting since the Battle of Blackwater. This time we are joined by Micah Clark from Planetos Podcast. We learn that Robett Glover has lost a battle outside of Duskendale, leading to the death of Ser Mayo, Helman Tallhart. Lands are divided up and issued out to the Lords of the realm, and Mace Tyrell is happy to claim all he can. The council is dismissed and Tywin informs Cersei that she will be married to Willas Tyrell and not Sansa. Tyrion deduces that Tywin intends to marry him to Sansa Stark, ensuring they have a claim to Winterfell.   As always we read listener emails and give some inductees including our first ever guest inductee!!! Jon befriends a brand new recruit, who is very different from most of the brothers of the Night's Watch. Sam Tarly is a large, soft, admitted coward, and Jon can't understand why he's joined the Black Brothers. When we hear his sad story, we get that he didn't have much of a choice. Chapter Review Jon Snow and the other recruits are training in the armory when in walks a huge boy of 15 dressed in fine clothes. After ridiculing him, Ser Alliser tests the boy's fighting skills, by pitting him against a big strong boy named Halder. The fight ends in seconds with Sam on the ground crying. When Ser Alliser won't let Halder stop beating him, Jon jumps in and defends Sam. It turns into a three-on-three battle that Jon, Pyp, and Grenn win. They learn Sam is the firstborn son of Lord Randyll Tarly, and he tells them he's a coward. Later, Sam tells Jon he didn't have a choice to join the Night's Watch. His father did not care for his soft, gentle nature. He preferred that Sam's younger brother Dickon be his heir. On his 15th nameday, his father told Sam that if he didn't join the Night's Watch, he was going to kill him. Jon then convinces the rest of the boys to go easy on Sam. Only Rast requires a little convincing, which Ghost is more than happy to provide. Characters/Places/Names/Events Jon Snow - Bastard Son of Lord Ned Stark. Recruit to the Night's Watch. The blood that ties us, familial bonds and characters long thought gone. Episode 6 had a tough act to follow since it was, Hodorless, but it held its own nonetheless. We get to meet the crappiest dad ever, and no I'm not talking about Walder Frey. A long-lost Stark reappears, and a Tully that managed to avoid the Red Wedding also returns. Dany's teenage bad-boy dragon tires of whoring and sleeping and finally decides to seek out his mother. And a girl is no longer a girl, not yet a women. So, get a nice big dose of the dragon's breath and get ready for GAME OF STONED.   Halfway through the season you guys. Right out the gate we learn what happens to Bran and Meera, and it involves major visions. VISIONS. Bran is stuck in a loop where he gets to enjoy rewatching the execution of his parents, his own fall, and all sorts of fucked up things from the past. Like, for instance, the MAD FUCKING KING! No one expected that and we all just about died. And of course he looks like a maniac and of course he's screaming "BURN THEM ALL!" Awesome. Gilly endures the worst family reunion ever, and ultimately her, Sam, and babe, decide to cut family ties and steal a very important piece of weaponry in the meantime. Mace Tyrell proves, yet again, that he will always win in the Armor of Most Fabulousness contest. Not even Tommen's new KingsGuard can compete. Lastly, a girl decides that she isn't just a girl after all. She's a Stark. And she's gonna stick you with the pointy end. Oh yeah, and Dany. Being followed around by a Kalasaar of adoring bros. Dragon shadow. Flying. Shouting of speeches. The usual. We hope you enjoy this episode of Game of Stoned. Just when you didn't think Game of Thrones could get any better than a white walker army, we get Daenerys Targarian mounting Drogon to round out an epic battle in the Merenese arena. The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to talk about the rise of Daenerys Targaryen and the fall of Stannis Baratheon in this week's episode, The Dance of Dragons. The Sons of the Harpy finally made another move against Daenerys as they upended the tournament in the fighting pits and began killing everyone including the despised Hizdahr zo Loraq. After being banished twice and killing a few men in the process, it looks like Jorah has finally won back Dany trust after chucking the so called spear of destiny one of her assassins. Arya's storyline continues to crawl to a climax as she has a run in with Meryn Trant when he arrives in Braavos with Mace Tyrell. Her season arc has been promising, but is really lacking the progress or urgency of some of her past story lines. Daniel and I get into a heated discussion whether or not we've like the slower pace. Dorne continues to be one of the absolute worst side treks in the history of the show and we spend a few minutes trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with our favorite Lannister/Bronn pairing. We've never been the biggest Stannis the Mannis fans on the podcast, but we discuss the high hopes we had for him before took a nosedive into desperation.  This was an episode of the highest of highs and lowest of lows and we try to lay our final verdict on the seasons infamous episode 9. Where does it fall in comparison to the earlier seasons? Tune in to find out!
