Twenty years ago, Sir Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Napoleon, 1492, Black Hawk Down) directed yet another large-scale historical drama.....this time taking place during the Crusades as we watch war escalate between the Saracins and Christian armies sent over from Europe. And apparently no one really cared. :( The film received middling reviews and box office upon release. However following in the tradition of another maligned, often misunderstood genre epic which he directed back in the 1980's - Blade Runner - Ridley Scott arranged to have HIS own personal extended director's cut released to DVD, including at least forty minutes of extra footage. The reaction was not only universally postiive but THIS version (which Ridley insists is the COMPLETE version of the story he was trying to tell) is now looked upon by many as one of his masterpieces. It also features a stacked international cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Marton Csokas, Brendan Gleeson, and Alexander Siddig. Let's head back to the 12th Century Jerusalem to explore this epic tale!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week on the show, the boys head to Jerusalem! The random year generator spun 2005, so we chose “Kingdom of Heaven” (Directors Cut Roadshow Version) to see what Ridley Scott had in mind for his swords and sandals epic with lots of class and grace surrounding the religious tension that has disrupted the peace in Jerusalem for the last 1500 years or so… probably longer. Tread Perilously winds down Star Trek month with the most regretful of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes, "Profit and Lace." When Zek and Ishka arrive on DS9, they tell Quark some terrible news: Zek's attempts to allow Ferengi women to wear clothes and acquire profit have led to him being deposed. In his place, Brunt has been elected acting Grand Nagus. With only three days before Brunt's confirmation, Zek has one last ditch plan to restore his position -- have Ishka talk to one of the commissioners about untapped female markets. But after she suffers a heart attack, it's up to Quark to literally take her place. Erik and Justin, two diehard DS9 fans, brace themselves for one of the show's worst hours. The disconnect between the script and director Alexander Siddig's choices becomes a key issue. Erik theorizes the DS9 all-male writing staff had to watch the "sexual harassment awareness" tape just prior to breaking the story. Justin constantly suggests better episodes of the show. He also points out the Deep Space Nine polycule. Erik points out the strange gay panic nature of the jokes surrounding Rom. The pair try to find ways to make the episode more screwball and the suggestion of a proper B-plot leads to some interesting ideas. Also, Erik tries to re-develop the recipe for Romulan Ale.
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) explore the various “Facets” of this very meh episode. We celebrate Nog getting into Starfleet Academy, we question what the hell was going on with the Curzon storyline and we suggest some changes that could have made the episode better. Matthew wonders if Alexander Siddig would look good in drag. Jo has a theory about the nature of Dax and Leeta's relationship and if you think its a queer theory you're probably right. As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com

George Clooney contemplated suicide, writer-director Stephen Gaghan was kidnapped, and Harrison Ford almost played "Bob". Warner Brothers gave the film Syriana an unlimited research budget, and the resulting script netted one of the best casts of an adult drama in film history (George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Jeffrey Wright, Chris Cooper, Matt Damon, Amanda Peet, Tom McCarthy, Max Minghella, Alexander Siddig, Tim Blake Nelson, William Hurt, and Mark Strong). Yet Syriana did not turn a profit in its theatrical release, and audiences were mixed on it. Why? This movie is incredible, and I did a deep dive into it for this episode. Hilary Shepard - Trek Untold Encore This week it's an encore episode from August 2020 with Hilary Shepard. Hilary Shepard has terrorized teens with attitudes, did aerobics with Bea Arthur & Betty White, and tried to seduce Starfleet officers, among other accomplishments throughout her diverse career. "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" fans will remember her as ensign Hoya from "The Ship" and her two appearances as Lauren, the lusty genetically enhanced genius from "Statistical Probabilities" and "Chrysalis," but many fans like myself know her best as the evil Divatox from "Power Rangers Turbo"! We talk about dancing with Alexander Siddig and singing with The Jack Pack, how she got the role and what inspired her performance, and being directed by Anson Williams, AKA Pottsy from "Happy Days"! Plus, memories of her all-girl band "American Girls," working with young Johnny Depp in one of his earliest roles, "Private Resort," being an aerobics instructor on "The Golden Girls," and hanging out with Jon Stamos on "Full House," being an evil villain in a Meatloaf music video, grinding on Steve Carrell in "The 40-Year Old Virgin", and making board games with her BFF Daryl Hannah. And, of course, some talk about arguably her most famous role as DIvatox in "Power Rangers Turbo" and a strange connection with Brad Pitt's first movie role (that Hilary was a part of) and Power Rangers! There's a dungeon inside Picard's head, maybe his father's a cylon, Rios is actually from Chile and only works in outer-space, Raffi and Seven's relationship will lead to tripping teenagers, Borgness Jurati shatters glass and gets high on endorphins, Guinan calls Q and he lets it go to voicemail. Original broadcast date October 10, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/10/binary-system-podcast-194-wtnv-155-the-heist-part-3/ This week we recap the final episode of "The Heist" storyline, and the whole thing wrapped up neatly although NOT THE WAY WE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO. Geez, Night Vale writers, give us a heart attack why don't you... Believe it or not, the recap only takes up the first ten minutes of this podcast. The rest is a We Can't Stop Digressing special as we talk about the new Picard trailer (practical makeup versus digital effects), the new season of Peaky Blinders (they haven't brought back Alexander Siddig's character and we're not happy about it), Carnival Row (the show should really consult with some furries about the best way to make digitigrade legs), and Elizabeth's trip to California Adventure Park (did YOU know George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch has a winery?) This week's outro music is a clip from Crescents by Ketsa. https://www.freemusicarchive.org/music/Ketsa/Raising_Frequecy/Crescents Correction: We spent so much time talking about how much we liked this week's Weather that we forgot to say what it was. It's “Good Luck with That” by Fathom All the Animals. https://youtu.be/1XMIAGkLIv4
In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode, Hippocratic Oath, Julian Bashir weighs the strategic importance of helping a rogue group of Jem'Hadar -- while Worf weighs the dedication of Deep Space Nine's security chief. Join in on the fun as we unpack it all.
I reach into the archives for a bit of my conversation with Star Trek's Alexander Siddig. And Richard Harmon of The 100 talks from SDCC about the ticking clock of season four.

What Liam O'Donnell has achieved with Skylines (2020) is just about every film student's dream... Starting out as a completely independent film venture, based heavily on the locations they happened to have access to, the film series has grown into a treasured collection of science fiction action movies. All three films are available on either Netflix, Amazon or iTunes and star huge names such as Lindsey Morgan, Rhona Mitra, James Cosmo and Alexander Siddig. The trilogy's director Liam O'Donnell shares his filmmaking secrets with presenter and actress, Aiysha Jebali as they discuss everything from writing the treatments to post production spending and everything else in-between.These films certainly pack a punch with phenomenal stunt artists from The Raid (2011), James Bond: Skyfall (2012) and Captain Marvel (2019), alongside actors like Daniel Bernhardt and Cha-Lee Yoon being willing and more than capable of doing their own action sequences too.Logline: "When a virus threatens to turn the now earth-dwelling friendly alien hybrids against humans, Captain Rose Corley must lead a team of elite mercenaries on a mission to the alien world in order to save what's left of humanity."_____________________________________________________________________________________Film Forums Podcast focuses on the people of film and how they have put their work in the public eye with success. Kingdom of Heaven (2005) is a film that attempts to speak on current and past religious and sociopolitical conflicts while dazzling you with beautiful scenery, deep, nuanced plot, and some bloody battles. While it doesn't succeed in all of these goals, it gave us the opportunity to have some interesting subject matter — taking our normal 39% movie and instead viewing the much more critically acclaimed Director's Cut. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, David Thewlis, Alexander Siddig, and Edward Norton (as well as countless other actors), Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut is worth at least watching for the tasty discourse.
It's game time, folks! This current series consists of four films that for all intents and purposes are not related, except for one connection they all have. And that's the game — guess the connection. We won't be announcing the films ahead of time — you'll have to wait until they're released to see what the films are. And when the podcast about the fourth film in our series is released on Friday, March 13th, the first person to post the correct connection on Facebook or Twitter will win a Next Reel T-shirt! Think you've got what it takes? Then tune in for clues and play along! First up, “Syriana."After Stephen Gaghan wrote “Traffic” for Steven Soderbergh, Soderbergh introduced him to Robert Baer's book “See No Evil,” and Gaghan knew the next complex multi-story film he wanted to write. After years of researching around the world, he brought “Syriana” to the world and, while well received, both critics and audiences alike found it very complicated and confusing. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we begin our Mystery series with Gaghan's 2005 film “Syriana.” We talk about why Andy likes it so much — loves it in fact — and what he gets out of it, as well as why Pete finds it to be 20 minutes of a brilliant ending preceded by tedium. We chat about the countless famous faces gracing the screen in this film and how they each do, particularly Matt Damon, George Clooney, Jeffrey Wright and Alexander Siddig. We discuss the roles each of them play and how their stories connect, as well as the fascinating element of fathers and sons in the story. We discuss the politics within the film as well as the terrorism and the corporate greed. And we cover some of the technical elements, like the editing, the camera work and the score. It's a film that even we find divisive but one that is definitely saying something. Tune in!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes!
