Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
“Learn from the Master” – Luke 9:46-62 We need Jesus to correct our misunderstandings of mission. An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in…
Luke 5:4-11 4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." 5 But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." On this occasion in Luke 5, Jesus is preaching to the multitude that is pressing upon Him. He sees two boats nearby, one of which is Simon Peter's, so He gets into it and goes out a little way from the shore and continues His message (vv. 1-3). After Jesus finished speaking, He said to Peter, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." First it was, “Put out a little…”. Next it was, “Launch out into the deep…”. Now it was, “Let down your nets”. What an interesting progression we see here. This is often the way the Lord works in our lives. Peter might have been thinking, “This is going to be embarrassing. Jesus knows nothing about fishing, and I've just washed my nets and this great crowd on the shore is watching us. They probably going to think, “What in the world are you doing, trying to catch fish in the daytime.” But it was Jesus speaking, so Peter responds with partial obedience. “Nevertheless, at Your Word I will let down the net”. Did you also notice that Peter called Jesus Master? The word translated "Master" (Luke 5:5) is used only by Luke and it has a variety of meanings, all of which speak of authority: chief commander, magistrate, governor of a city, and president of a college. Peter was willing to submit to the authority of Jesus, even though he did not understand all that the Lord was doing. I believe Jesus was teaching Peter a lesson he would never forget. Peter was in the process of acknowledging and making Jesus the Lord of his life. And Peter needed to understand that Jesus is Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all. I believe there are two major callings of the Lord upon our lives. The first call is to salvation. To become a believer in Jesus and trust Him as our Savior to forgive us our sins. That happened to Peter in John 1, when Andrew, his brother brought him to Jesus at the baptism. But now there is another calling we experience after we get saved and that is the calling to discipleship. To follow Jesus, surrendering our all to Him and become a partner with Him is catching men, women, boys and girls for the kingdom. That is what Romans 12:1-2 is about: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Ephesians 2:8-10 speaks to this too: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” We have not been saved just to sit and enjoy the Christian life, but we have been called also to labor for Jesus catching men for the kingdom! Despite what our family and friends and the crowd might think we have to make a choice to either obey or disobey the call of Jesus on our lives. Despite our failures in the past, we only need to know that if Jesus asked us to do something, He will empower us and make a way for us to accomplish it. We should not let the past hinder the present. Like Peter, we should make a fresh start on the authority of Jesus. What is the Lord Jesus speaking to you about today? Despite what you might feel or think, will you say, “Nevertheless, at Your Word, I will!” God bless!

Last week, The Mandalorian makes an appearance. This week, the prospect of revisiting Grogu was on the table. Well, we didn't just get "baby Yoda" in Chapter Six. We got Master Luke, Ahsoka Tano, R2-D2, the debut of ant droids, Cobb Vanth...and we even got Cad Bane. Watching so much Star Wars certainly pays off when you get episodes like this because you're not as lost and don't have to say, "wait, who is this guy and why is she/he important?" You don't HAVE to watch that much Star Wars, but if you're listening to this podcast, I have the feeling you are. Steve has a soft spot for black outfit Luke. It's the Luke he emulated when playing with action figures. Everyone is free to choose their own hero. Even Grogu. I think his choice has already been made. I think he'll be wearing chain mail under his sackcloth and we'll get a Chamber of Mazarbul-like reveal. If you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings, you may know what I speak of, but I doubt it will be a spear. Will Cad Bane walk away with the Darksaber somehow? Oh, I don't think he would use it, but I do think we could end up seeing Bane continue to be a thorn in Din Djarin's side into The Mandalorian season three. Will Luke come back to Tatooine? Will he stop by Ol' Ben's hutt to gather some more things and lead us into the Obi-wan Kenobi series? Will we get a series tag at all? This podcast is part of 2022 Star Wars Podcast Day. “My dad pointed out to me something that Charles Spurgeon pointed out to him,” wrote pastor Dane Ortlund in Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers. “In the four Gospel accounts given to us in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John— eighty-nine chapters of biblical text— there’s only one place where Jesus tells us about his own heart.” That place is described in today’s Scripture verse: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29). As we’ve studied godly learning together this month, we’ve seen that learning can be hard work. It can involve suffering. It definitely requires uncomfortable change and growth. Are we ready to put on Christ’s yoke and learn from Him? We may assume that we have to grit our teeth and begin. But here Jesus says we will find “rest” for our souls? Yes, learning from Jesus is restful because our Teacher is humble and gentle. His invitation is “pure joy” (James 1:2). Jesus praised the Father for revealing the truth of His redemptive plan to His followers, rather than to the Pharisees and other religious leaders (vv. 25–26). This reminds us that God often overturns the knowledge of the “wise and learned” for His own purposes. In the same way the Father revealed the Son to those He chose, the Son also reveals the Father to whomever He chooses (v. 27). The ultimate content of real learning always centers around God Himself. This leads into the call to come and learn from Jesus (vv. 28–30). Yes, we’ll need to pick up our crosses and carry them in the footsteps of our Master (Luke 9:23–26). But on the journey, we’ll learn that His yoke is easy and His burden is light (see also Jer. 6:16; 1 John 5:3). >> Reflect on this month’s study (or reread your notes if you’ve been taking them). What are your top three takeaways or insights? How will you pursue learning from God in the year ahead?
It is not truthful to refer to one as a Master and no do the Master's bidding. In this message, Brother Luke examines what it means to call the Lord our Master. Why Call Me Master?

Shrewd investment in God’s Total Return Fund
In the movie Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, a college professor befriended a stray Akita puppy named Hachi. The dog expressed his loyalty by waiting at the train station each day for the professor to return from work. One day, the professor suffered a fatal stroke. Hachi waited hours at the train station, and for the next ten years he returned each day—awaiting His loving master. Luke tells the story of a man named Simeon who patiently waited for the coming of his Master (Luke 2:25). The Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon that he would not see death until he saw the Messiah (v. 26). As a result, Simeon kept waiting for the One that would provide “salvation” for God’s people (v. 30). When Mary and Joseph entered the temple with Jesus, the Holy Spirit whispered to Simeon, “Yes! This is the One!” The wait was finally over! Simeon held Christ in his arms—the hope, salvation, and comfort for all people (vv. 28–32). If we find ourselves in a season of waiting, may we hear the words of the prophet Isaiah with fresh ears: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31). As we await Jesus’ return, He provides the hope and strength we need for each new day.
"Behold, God is my Helper!" We look to our money and stuff to deliver us from the woes of this life and the fear of death. These "little things" cannot help for they are fading away. The "True Riches" are found in Christ and His Word! Sermon Text: Luke 16:1-13. Sermon Theme: "The Merciful Master!" You are a parenting ninja. You know it. Your friends know it. And, someday, your children will know it, too. So you're feeling a little cocky one day, throwing down wisdom you feel sure will shape your little darling into an amazing human being, when all of a sudden, BAM!!The tables turn. You become the student, and the 9-year-old standing in front of you, the receptacle into which you pour your knowledge and experience much as Yoda does with Master Luke, has become the teacher. Unexpectedly, you've just been handed a lesson from the crib. This week, we talk about the fact that we learn as much from our kids as they learn from us. It's a symbiotic relationship—think Nemo and the sea anemone. They help each other. They grow because of each other. We do the same with our kids. And when it comes to the symbiosis between parent and child, I think we both know who plays the clown fish. Just keep swimming. Larry begins this episode with a tribute to his recently departed Aunt Patty, who was integral in his life growing up, particularly in his appreciation of movies. He then pays tribute to our first fallen James Bond, Sir Roger Moore. After that things get a little less serious as he's joined by Greg O. for an epic Star Wars rant. Don't worry, kids. Dr. Jess is there to offer resistance, which is futile, of course.
For an 18-year old, IM Luke Harmon-Vellotti is rather ridiculously accomplished..
