At the height of my news career, I was the lead story guy for channel 4 here in Dallas. That meant I was constantly covering crime every single night. Somebody who knows that journey very well is my next guest, Dana Grant. She is a master-certified international Life Coach.

This week's guest is 21-year old former youth champion, GM Awonder Liang. As a scholastic player, Awonder broke many records including becoming the youngest US player to reach a rating of 2000 (USCF), the youngest to beat an International Master, as well the youngest to beat a Grandmaster. These days, Awonder is a student at University of Chicago and is more devoted to his studies than his chess. Nonetheless, Awonder's love for the game is evident, and he recently played in two strong tournaments even though he did not prepare as rigorously as he once would have. In our conversation, Awonder was able to contextualize his remarkable chess success and discuss both what made him great, and what may have led to contemporaries of his like GM Alireza Firouzja and Arjun Erigaisi surpassing him in rating ( for now at least.) It was fun to hear Awonder reflect on his career as if he were an old man, and I look forward to seeing how his bright future unfolds. 0:00- You can subscribe to my free newsletter here- ” https://benjohnson.substack.com Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com! Meet Ellie Casement, a 23-year-old marine biologist, dive professional, and self-proclaimed 'fish geek.' Over the past year, Ellie has been immersing herself in the marine world of Roatan, Honduras, fueled by her passion for marine conservation and a prestigious Fulbright Independent Research Grant. In Roatan, Ellie's journey entailed collaborating with notable local NGOs, including the Roatan Marine Park, Healthy Reefs, and the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences. Her groundbreaking project? Investigating how fish populations, particularly butterflyfish, adapt behaviorally and demographically to the devastating stony coral tissue loss disease epidemic ravaging Caribbean reefs. But Ellie's work extends beyond academic research. Her days were filled with diverse, impactful activities: from teaching coral restoration techniques at local dive shops, empowering young locals through SCUBA education, to monitoring grouper spawning events and even tagging sharks. Ellie's oceanic journey began at the tender age of 4 during her family's sojourn in St. Lucia. A pivotal SCUBA dive at 12 set her heart on a life intertwined with the sea. Following an academic path in ecology and evolutionary biology at Tulane University, enriched by semesters abroad and numerous SCUBA certifications, the Fulbright grant transformed her island-living dream into reality. As of July 2023, Ellie's new chapter unfolds in Portugal, where she is part of the EU's International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea) program. Her current pursuits? A fascinating shark DNA barcoding project, preparing her Fulbright research for publication, and devising future projects centered around her beloved butterflyfish. For insights into Ellie's research, inquiries about Roatan, or simply to connect, reach her at elliecasement@gmail.com. There are 1,200 Master Gardeners in the State of Kansas. But in June, there will be Master Gardeners from across the country coming to Kansas for their conference. Ever wonder what the best tomatoes are to grow in Kansas? Or how to manage Japanese Beetles. Well all of these things have one thing in common: the K-State Extension office. One of the things we like to highlight on the podcast is events that bring in people from outside of Kansas. Whether drawing from other states across the US or pulling in people from other countries, these events are not only good for the Kansas economy, they are a chance for us to show off our state, teach people about who we are as Kansans, and hopefully do a little bit of stereotype busting. In June, Overland Park will be hosting the International Master Gardener Conference for 2023. My guest today is Dennis Patton, a Horticulturist with the Johnson County Extension office. Dennis is also one of the chairs for the Conference, along with 2 other dedicated gardeners who are volunteers. A Romanian and an American are discussing the twitter obliteration of Andrew Tate by Greta Thunberg, while focusing on the lesser known details of his criminal activity and arrest in Bucharest, his childhood, chess years and current girlfriend. The online feud between teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg and Andrew Tate is probably one of the best Twitter moments ever. Greta won by knockout, despite Tate's kickboxing background. If you like our content and want to support us, please become a patron. The Tate brothers – Andrew and Tristan – moved to Bucharest, Romania in 2017 because they thought rape charges are easier to avoid. In April 2022, following a tip-off from the US embassy that a 21-year-old American woman was being held against her will, their Pipera villa was raided. The police found two women being held captive, an American and a Romanian and the brothers were detained for 24 hours, on suspicion of human trafficking and rape. In December 2022, hours after posting a video reply to Greta Thunberg showing two Jerry's Pizza boxes, DIICOT - Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism – arrested the brothers again, as well as two women who were helping them: Luana Radu – an ex cop - and Georgiana Manuela Naghel, the latter being Andrew Tate's girlfriend. DIICOT alleged that the four suspects – the Tate brothers and their respective girlfriends - formed an organized criminal group that stretched from Romania to Britain and the United States, for the purpose of committing the crime of human trafficking. 1 The authorities say that the Tate brothers misled the victims “into believing that they intended to enter into a marriage/cohabitation relationship” – the loverboy scam - while transporting victims to Romania and later sexually exploiting them with physical violence and coercion. Authorities also said one of the suspects raped a victim on two separate occasions in March 2022. At least six victims were allegedly “sexually exploited by the organized criminal group”. 2 In this episode we also take a look at Andrew Tate's childhood in Chicago, Illinois and Luton, UK, his family history, chess years and kickboxing career. His father, Emory Tate, was a chess International Master. Tristan and Andrew claim that they were very poor, but according to Gandul, their father left them a hotel in Thailand. 3 1. Ovidiu Oanta. The Tate brothers could lose their entire fortune. DIICOT prosecutors seized the million-dollar villa and cars. Stiril Pro-TV. January 2023. ⇤2. Adina Anghelescu. The victims of Andrew and Tristan Tate are starting to make complaints to DIICOT and are asking for damages. Gandul. January 2023. ⇤3. Marius Olaru. Catching the Tate brothers, step by step. Gandul. Welcome to episode 858 in which host Polly Hammond interviews Patricia Wilcox in this episode of Uncorked Show description As the co-founder of New York's Awestruck Ciders, Patricia Wilcox knows a thing or two about the challenges of building – and bootstrapping – a successful alcohol brand. With her latest article, she's pulled the curtain aside on some of the less-magical sides of organic social media. Today, we talk with her about what wine brands can do better. More about today's Guest: Patricia Wilcox is the co-founder of her own craft cider company, Awestruck Ciders in upstate New York. Since founding her cidery in 2013, she's gone on to study International Master in Wine Tourism Innovation through Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Université de Bordeaux, and Universidade do Porto. Her wine expertise also includes the Introductory Certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers and WSET Level 3 Certification in Wine with distinction. She is currently an editorial producer for WineMasters.tv and writer for Drinks+, Wine Travel Awards, and the Drop.
