On Wednesday, President Biden announced that he will cancel $10,000 in federal student loan debt for people earning $125,000 or less per year, and will cancel an extra $10,000 for Pell Grant recipients, extend the pause on student loan payments until Dec. 31, and make reforms that would allow the student loan system to be more manageable for borrowers. This was a long-awaited announcement for the more than 45 million people who have federal student loans, and the White House estimates that this relief will allow for roughly 20 million borrowers to have their student debt fully canceled. In the coming months, the Department of Education said it will release a form to apply for this relief before the end of the year, but also noted that roughly eight million people will receive automatic relief. We talk with John King, EdTrust President and former U.S. Secretary of Education, about the announcement and what more needs to be done. Jordan, Damon & Tony are curious – what do Black Queer stories look like when we write them ourselves? We play a literature-themed game, discuss our favorite Black Queer reads, discuss stories that we would write ourselves, then delve into a conversation around how Black Queer culture has informed the writing of our guest. This week we welcome New York Times bestselling author Michael Arceneaux to our Surface Level Family. Michael's fun writing style takes a unique look at millennial problems, from dating to student loan debt. He brings a point of view that is equal parts funny, honest, and real. This is not an author who takes himself too seriously and that is why his books are resonating with a generation truly doing the best we can with what we've got. We know a lot but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.

Michael Arceneaux, managing director of the Water Information Sharing and Analysis Center (WaterISAC), joins Claroty's Aperture podcast for a deep dive into the results of the recently released Water Sector Coordinating Council's cybersecurity survey. In short, the water sector needs cybersecurity help from industry organizations and the federal government. Respondents, identified four critical areas of need ranging from training, to improved cybersecurity tools and threat information, to money allocated from the federal government via loans and grants. While there were encouraging signs around the amount of risk assessment happening within the sector, that's offset by data that shows a lack of visibility into connected IT and OT assets. Water utilities are exposed to threats from threat actors, and respondents want to minimize the exposure of control systems, identify and remediate vulnerabilities, and secure remote access to OT systems.

The book tells the story of the first decade of their friendship, and also shares expert advice from other close friends and researchers on how to prioritize and maintain friendships as adults. A couple of weeks ago, on the day their book was released, Aminatou and Ann joined me on Zoom from New York and Los Angeles to talk about the ups and downs of their (mostly) long-distance friendship. Plus, they gave our listeners and viewers advice on their biggest friendship dilemmas and questions.   You can watch the video of this live conversation here, thanks to our friends at The Greene Space. For the first conversation in this series with Michael Arceneaux, you can watch it here or listen to it here. You know those people who add so much joy, wisdom and humour to the world? Well, Michael Arceneaux is one of those people. And for anyone who follows Michael on social media, has read and loved his books or knows him personally, you know why he is so loved. Michael is such a talented and beautiful observer of life that it’s no surprise at all that his first book, ‘I Can’t Date Jesus’ which was published in July 2018, became an instant New York Times Bestseller. This essential and important collection of essays - which is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking - offers readers a front row seat to Michael’s joys, struggles and experiences as a Black queer man growing up in America. His incredible talent at storytelling is stunning as is Michael’s honesty and realness about faith and religion, family and self-discovery. And I'm so thankful that Michael's second book, 'I Don't Want to Die Poor,' which was published in April, provides a second opportunity for readers to enjoy more of Michael’s wit and wisdom as he explores his personal struggles and frustrations with the financial and emotional price tags that come with following your dreams. ‘I Can’t Date Jesus’ and ‘I Don’t Want to Die Poor’ are literary gold and I can’t recommend them enough. In both books, Michael uses his powerful voice to reveal the truths behind important and relatable topics: relationships, family, sex, dating, politics and career choices. I loved chatting with Michael about his books, how emotional and financial debt demands so much more from us than a monthly payment and why conversations about race, politics and failed systems will always be timely and important. I really hope you enjoy our episode! Last year, he joined me on the show to discuss his bestselling collection of essays, "I Can't Date Jesus," as well as growing up gay in a Catholic family in Houston and striking out on his own to become a writer when many, many systems were stacked against him. A few weeks ago, he joined me again—this time, on Zoom from his apartment in Harlem—to talk about his new book, called "I Don't Want To Die Poor." He told me what it feels like to be slowly paying down his student loan debt, and how he's creating joy for himself in the midst of "three pandemics." Welcome back readers, I'm back with another episode of Reading While Black Podcast and today we have Michael Arceneaux here to discuss his second book, I Don't Want To Die Poor. This is not just a perfect book for right now at this moment as student loan debt is a national conversation during the 2020 Presidential Race but it was a perfect book 10 years ago. Michael tells his story and how debt doesn't just affect you financially but becomes burdens on your mental health and your dating life. It's not too late to pick up I Don't Want To Die Poor. Remember to support your local bookstores in your community. It's also time to announce our May Book of the Month. If you did not know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and I thought it was appropriate to select a book that focused on solutions to dealing with trauma. It gives me great pleasure to announce our book of the month for May is My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Mending of Our Bodies and Hearts by Resmaa Menakem. The body is where our instincts reside and where we fight, flee, or freeze, and it endures the trauma inflicted by the ills that plague society. In this groundbreaking work, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of body-centered psychology. He argues this destruction will continue until Americans learn to heal the generational anguish of white supremacy, which is deeply embedded in all our bodies. Our collective agony doesn't just affect African Americans. White Americans suffer their own secondary trauma as well. So do blue Americans—our police. My Grandmother's Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not about the head, but about the body, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide. Paves the way for a new, body-centered understanding of white supremacy—how it is literally in our blood and our nervous system. Offers a step-by-step solution—a healing process—in addition to incisive social commentary. Resmaa Menakem, MSW, LICSW, is a therapist with decades of experience currently in private practice in Minneapolis, MN, specializing in trauma, body-centered psychotherapy, and violence prevention. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and Dr. Phil as an expert on conflict and violence. Menakem has studied with bestselling authors Dr. David Schnarch (Passionate Marriage) and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score). He also trained at Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. If you live in the Montgomery, AL area, you can pick it up at your local abolition bookstore 1977 Books. Welcome Back Readers,  I'm back with another episode of Reading While Black Podcast and today we have Dr. Carol Anderson here to discuss her book One Person, No Vote. This is not only a history lesson in Voter Suppression but the keys to what it takes to defeat it. In this conversation you will hear Dr. Anderson and I cover a wide range of topics from the history of voter suppression, the continued effort by states to suppress the vote for terrible result and what the resistance is doing to stop it. This is maybe one of the most important reads you'll ever embark on. You will never say "Black people don't show up to the ballot" once you understand why that's happening.  March is Women's History and 2020 is an election year, choosing our next book was a no brainer. Our March Book of the Month is One Person, No Vote by Carol Anderson.  In her New York Times bestseller White Rage, Carol Anderson laid bare an insidious history of policies that have systematically impeded black progress in America, from 1865 to our combustible present. With One Person, No Vote, she chronicles a related history: the rollbacks to African American participation in the vote since the 2013 Supreme Court decision that eviscerated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known as the Shelby ruling, this decision effectively allowed districts with a demonstrated history of racial discrimination to change voting requirements without approval from the Department of Justice. Focusing on the aftermath of Shelby, Anderson follows the astonishing story of government-dictated racial discrimination unfolding before our very eyes as more and more states adopt voter suppression laws. In gripping, enlightening detail she explains how voter suppression works, from photo ID requirements to gerrymandering to poll closures. And with vivid characters, she explores the resistance: the organizing, activism, and court battles to restore the basic right to vote to all Americans as the nation gears up for the 2018 midterm elections.  Also it's the perfect time to announce our April Book of the Month,  I Don’t Want To Die Poor by Michael Arceneaux. You can pre-order now!!! The book releases April 7, 2020.  From the New York Times bestselling author of I Can’t Date Jesus, which Vogue called “a piece of personal and cultural storytelling that is as fun as it is illuminating,” comes a wry and insightful essay collection that explores the financial and emotional cost of chasing your dreams.  If you live in the Montgomery, AL area, you can pick it up at your local abolition bookstore 1977 Books.  In light of COVID-19, 1977 Books has gone digital so check them out on their website here 1977 Books is located at 39 Dexter Ave Suite #209, Montgomery, AL 36104.  Facebook: @1977Books  Instagram: @1977Books  Twitter: @1977Books  Remember to leave us a Voice Message so you can share your reading experience and be a part of the podcast.   Remember to check out Reading While Black Merch  Use promo code “RWBFAM” for 35% off   Remember to leave a review and five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  Follow Us  Facebook: @ReadingWhileBLK Facebook Group: Reading While Black Book Club Twitter: @ReadingWhileBLK  Instagram: @ReadingWhileBLK  www.readingwhileblackbookclub.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ReadingWhileBLKPOD/message

When writer Michael Arceneaux was in his early 20s, he went to a gay club for the first time—after years of being closeted and denying his sexuality. "I enter a space and I just look at everything and I just get so caught up in my head," he told me. "But once you get the liquor you're like, oh, stop thinking, just go twerk."  Michael said that night was "the first time I actually felt joy with that part of myself." But despite finding alcohol to be a helpful way to let go of his inhibitions, drinking is complicated for Michael. Growing up, he says that his father would often become physically abusive when he drank too much. And Michael knows that he too is capable of extreme anger while drinking. "I am still human and thus susceptible to falling into patterns of those who have come before me," Michael says. "I'm reminded that [drinking] can lead to something else."  In 2018, Michael wrote a piece for The New York Times Opinion section called The Student Loan Serenity Prayer, about his student loan debt. Read it here.

Ana (@anamariecox) sat down with Michael Arceneaux (@youngsinick), author of the New York Times bestseller I Can’t Date Jesus. Their conversation kicked off with an exploration of Michael’s experience as a queer black man, how it is inherently political, and what that means in his daily life. They then talked about his work as a writer, and why he chose to write the book he wanted to rather than one craved by editors, that would have catered to a white audience. That turned the conversation towards representation, and what it takes for a black person to succeed in traditional media, namely an ability to speak to white people. Ana and Michael also dove into how he discovered his sexuality, and the ways that lack of representation not just of gay men, but black, Latino, and Asian men made that more difficult. They finished things off by talking about Michael’s family, and the influence they have not just on who he is, but on the book itself. His mother, a devout Catholic, still has issues with his sexuality, and he explained that despite them maintaining a relationship it remains a wedge. You can find Michael’s book here. Michael Arceneaux has stopped going to church. After growing up as a gay black Catholic in the South, he eventually decided that he could not find a way to integrate his identities into the Catholicism he grew up with. In his new memoir: I Can’t Date Jesus: Love, Sex, Family, Race, and Other Reasons I’ve Put My Faith in Beoncé, Michael describes how coming out as gay led to tension and conflict with people like his mother, still a devout Catholic. But Michael hasn’t given up on God just yet. In fact, in I Can’t Date Jesus he describes taking a friend up on an invitation to go to a church service. There he met a pastor and theologian who “really understands the Bible wasn’t just repeating verses kind of like the equivalent (as I put in the book) like a talking head on cable news… He was far more informed than me so I actually learned something from the conversation. I found it elevating.”    Michael told us how he wished he had been able to have conversations like that earlier in his life. “I think if you caught me much earlier around the time when I was generally trying to still be in church…you would have probably been able to keep me there.” This week in Signs of the Times we break down the explosive letter that was released over the weekend by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò accusing many church leaders—including Pope Francis—of covering up the misconduct and crimes of former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. Last winter, Parker won a multi-million dollar distribution deal for the movie at the Sundance Film Festival. As the anticipation grows for the film's release, a chapter from Parker's college past has come under scrutiny. He was charged and later acquitted in a rape trial as a student-athlete at Penn State. They discuss the job of an editor versus therapist when it comes to Teresa's explosive defensiveness, whether Kenya has passed the 'villain' baton to Marlo (and why Sanya's winning the race of being a terrific addition to the cast), and the difference between present vs past tense with regard to how Marlo vs Sonja present wealth. After watching the...shall we say, confounding, reunion finale for Atlanta, Sarah looks for one of the remaining peaches Drew brought to set as a prop. She realizes it's past its expiration date (kind of like this season) and instead Zooms up someone with the freshest takes on all things Housewives (maybe Sherée should skip this one), New York Times best-selling author, Michael Arceneaux (I Can't Date Jesus, I Don't Want to Die Poor). They settle into their respective Zoom windows (shoutout muscle relaxers and prayer), and deep dive the disconcerting narrative around Drew's sexuality, Ralph's continued emotional manipulation about and toward his wife (and truly odd energy with his 'cousin' Courtney), Kenya's powerhouse aside (and Ralph's unsuccessful effort to shame her into silence), and the wildest part of the reunion (surprisingly, not Drew's scene-into-song). Meanwhile, RHONY once again pulled through, and Sarah and Michael mentioned it all: the difference between sharing vulnerability and emotion, the connection between Jenna's childhood-into-adulthood circumstances and her reluctance to engage in some group dialogue, Jessel's definition of privilege, and Brynn's misplaced upset about Jenna's name reveal. And who better to break it all down than one of Sarah's fave return guests, a star in his own right, Michael Arceneaux (New York Times bestselling author, whose credits include "I Can't Date Jesus" and "I Don't Want to Die Poor."). They discuss the ways Kim and Kroy's split is reminiscent of a one-and-not-actually-done OC divorce, the difference in how Kandi and Todd currently view marital support, accommodations, and partnership, Shereé's active work against her own best interests in business and romance, a conspiracy theory circulating about Joe that allegedly comes up at the reunion, and the differences between Marg and Jen Aydin's arsenals (and armor). After Sarah finds her true calling in life -- watching Dr. Nicole throw a black Amex on a flustered attorney's lap -- she realizes her ideal billable hour is a priceless kiki with a certain beloved return guest. So Sarah Zooms up her pal, New York Times bestselling author Michael Arceneaux ("I Can't Date Jesus," "I Don't Want to Die Poor"), for a deep dive on the bitterness Lenny has toward a marital dynamic he created, Dr. Nicole's struggle to meet her father in the present while defending childhood and adult trauma from the past, a lesson in the harm of indifference that Meredith and Heather could learn from Elie Wiesel, and the irony behind Heather's book tour.
