No sense in really bothering with a full-on review of director/creator Ryan Coogler's popular new motion picture SINNERS, as Google can get to one in podcast or article format in just a few seconds. However, Wood revisits a few more details and themes from the film by building off of RogerEbert.com contributor Robert Daniels' polarizing review - 2.5 out of 4 stars - of the Jim Crow era-based horror film. Another segment of the show takes a look at some of the recent behavior of Higher Learning podcast co-host Van Lathan. Over a couple recent episodes Lathan made a biting take about his rival Kanye West, and then had an interview with author Jason Wilson where he broke down into tears after seemingly dealing with being pressed by some in his circle. The podcast, or content, game can just be a very awkward space at times.
The Ringer's Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Van Lathan are charged with taping a podcast before rewatching Steven Spielberg's 2002 sci-fi thriller ‘Minority Report,' starring Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, and Samantha Morton. Sean and Amanda are joined by Van Lathan to unpack Ryan Coogler's highly anticipated vampire horror film, ‘Sinners.' They applaud the film for its originality and authenticity, debate whether or not this is Michael B. Jordan's best performance of his career, and unpack one of the film's most controversial and daring scenes by hypothesizing about whether its boldness will be well received (2:28). Then, Sean is joined by Ryan Coogler to explain why he felt like he needed to make this movie, the importance of shooting on film, and the advice Christopher Nolan gave him for shooting on IMAX film cameras (1:12:03). President Donald Trump has only recently completed his first 100 days back in the White House - and already speculation is rife that he will find a way to stay in power for a third term. He's been busy unleashing a new wave of tariffs and negotiating hard with both Zelensky and Putin - and despite having enough on his plate in 2025, it hasn't stopped the President from acknowledging that people would like to see him run again in 2028... especially if the best the Democrats can offer is Jasmine Crockett. So, could Trump run for a third term? And if so, would this be a good thing for America? Joining Piers Morgan to debate this is host of 'Keeping it Real' podcast Jillian Michaels, co-host of the 'Ringer's Higher Learning' podcast Van Lathan, former White House Press Secretary under the Bush Administration, Ari Fleischer and host of 'I Doubt It Podcast' Jesse Dollemore. It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Van Lathan of the Higher Learning podcast! First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's dropping popularity (thanks to Elon), budding GOP criticism of the Trump/Musk regime, Trump's dismantling of the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force, Trump's funding freeze and mass firing, Elon's CPAC appearance, RFK's anti-vax maneuvers, Texas' (definitely unrelated) measles outbreak, Israel's best attempts to kill their Gaza ceasefire deal, and the confirmation of Kash Patel, also watching a flush-red MAGA district lay into Rep. Rich McCormick over Trump's insane executive coup. Mike Figueredo then joins, jumping right into his initial reactions to the Trump/Musk regime's sweeping destruction of the US government, before stepping back to expand a little on the particular insanity that is being a Democratic constituent at this point, with the overwhelming backlash to the impotence of Democratic Congresspeople finally boiling over at town halls and Democratic Leadership's media events. After expanding on the genuinely shocking rate at which Trump is executing the Project 2025 blueprint, Figueredo and Emma look to the impact of the Trump regime on emboldening cultures of bigotry in the US, from DHS' discrimination against queer folks to the suicide of a young Latina child after facing rampant anti-immigrant bigotry, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need for the Democratic Party to advance an agenda of actual political change if they want to escape from the fascist quagmire of the last few election cycles. Van Lathan and Emma then dive deep into the state (surprisingly positive) of the Leftist media ecosystem, the utter failure of the Democratic Party to identify, speak to, or govern for their base, and why MAGA's obsession with liberal defectors is so enchanting to reactionary media figures. Lathan implores Emma to dip her podcasting toes into pop culture, before wrapping up by touching on what he learned from covering Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Nora from Austin about Tim Pool's fiery foray into NASCAR sponsorships, before touching on Elon's CPAC meltdown and Rep. Greg Cesar's pushback to Elon's labor abuses. Kyle from Long Island unpacks RFK's lies about cell phone radiation, Leonard Peltier returns home, and conservatives help the media ponder whether a measles outbreak is actually that big of a deal, plus, your calls and IMs! Samantha Bee is a comedian, author and former late-night host who hosts the podcast Choice Words with Samantha Bee and co-hosts The Daily Beast Podcast with Joanna Coles. Her weekly late-night comedy series, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee was nominated for over 70 awards — and she has personally been nominated for 18 Emmy awards and won for both writing and executive producing. Full Frontal was explicitly, and hilariously, political and left-leaning so it's a bit surprising that Bee has declared herself Democrat-celibate, (at least for now). Samantha explains her new approach to politics and dishes on her biggest regret in this CNN pilot titled “Off Script” with Kara, Audie Cornish, CNN correspondent and host of The Assignment, and Van Lathan, co-host of The Ringer's Higher Learning podcast.
