Queer News & Culture topics include Black History Month, Zaya Wade’s coming out, and Ru Paul on SNL. We also share the winners of the Shaquanda Will Feed You hot sauce contest! Our guest this week is Roger Q. Mason, who is a Black, Irish, Filipino, queer, gender non-conforming writer/performer, director and producer. His work has been shown at theatres like the New York Theatre Workshop, New Group Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Chicago Dramatists, and the American Theatre of Actors. He’s the 2020 recipient of the Chuck Rowland Pioneer Award, presented by Celebration Theatre and the City of West Hollywood. We hear about his love for stories, use of gender pronoun identification as an act of protest, and the rebirth of his inner showgirl, Taffeta, who he plays in his 2020 play “Lavender Men.” The play is a historical fantasia which follows Taffeta, a self-proclaimed "fabulous queer creation of color," who invades the private world of Abe Lincoln to confront issues of visibility, race and LGBTQ+ inclusion that still challenge us today. Renessa and Jonah were together in New York for this week’s entire episode, so the kiki gets extra fun! Intro topics cover some Qmmunity updates, a Bisexual Break rant about the Twitter comments on the first out bisexual in the Miss USA pageant, Rachel Slawson, and Jonah’s nightmare experience at a “luxury escapism” Instagram scam. This week’s guest is artist Tyler Wallach, whose bright, bold street art style spans canvas, clothing, and pieces to benefit organizations like The Trevor Project, The Tyler Clementi Foundation, The Miami-Dade LGBTQ Business Association, Harrisburg PA LGBT Center, VOICES4, Callen Lorde, Habitat for Humanity NYC, and RED. We had a gay old time in his Brooklyn studio, got to see some new pieces he’s working on, and heard more about his background in musical theatre, transitioning to visual art, merchandising his art, and selling his talent to collaborate with brands like Samsung and Saks Fifth Avenue. We discussed topics like taking yourself seriously, talking money, and wearing the label “queer artist” with pride. Well it may be World War III thanks that d-bag in the White House, but we are determined to make 2020 the QUEEREST year of all even if we all go down in flames! We hear about Jonah's gaycation to Nicaragua and Columbia, discuss the royal lesbian wedding (#Krashlyn #KriegerGotaKeeper), the latest L Word Generation Q lesbo drama, and other queertertainment news. We then hear a little about one of Renessa's former lives with singing! But on to the TRULY exciting part of this episode: Our guest interview this week is with the beautiful, skilled, and just generally super dope musician, producer, and DJ, Camila Grey. Jonah was out of the office for this one, but Renessa was so lucky to get Camila on the phone in between her touring commitments with Adam Lambert! We talk about her background in music—from attending Berklee College of Music, to working a stint in the music biz before she started focusing on playing, recording, and performing, her time with Leisha Hailey and their band Uh Huh Her, to where she is today (having worked with artists like Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Big Black Delta, Tricky, Linda Perry, Kanye West, Hans Zimmer, and Wendy Melvoin), and a solo project in the works (BREAKING NEWS!). And we talk about coming out to religious parents, queer representation in music today, and staying curious and eager to learn new things to hone your craft. Keep an eye out for Adam Lambert's upcoming Feel Something Foundation, which Camila will be serving on the board of! Renessa and Jonah catch up about work and the NYC Marathon a couple of weeks ago (which means we can finally stop talking about it until next year). We kept this week’s Queer News & Culture brief, and talked a little bit about 45’s deplorable efforts to let faith-based groups exclude LGBTQ parents, and the promising upsurge in queer characters on network TV shows. We then dive right into our interview with the smart, inquisitive, and handsome Hugh Ryan! Hugh is a writer, curator, and speaker in New York City. His work is about queer politics, culture, and history, and his new book, When Brooklyn Was Queer which is a groundbreaking exploration of the LGBTQ history of Brooklyn, from the early days of Walt Whitman in the 1850s up through the women who worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II, and beyond. We learn about how the inquiry into this research was inspired and carried out to write this book, some of the groups and specific people who were featured in it, and applying for grants. Hugh also shares a bit about his background and his other areas of work, which include teaching and working with the Urban Justice Center in NY (and maybe being a voice actor in the future?!) TQC took a week off, but we're back with some personal and podcast updates! This week we're also joined by new friend of the pod Clayton for our very first "Millennial Moment" segment, where we discuss queer topics with someone younger (and smarter) than Jonah and Renessa (because let's face it, they're barely getting by). The topic this week is the term Latinx—Where did it come from and how/where is it used? Clayton shares his Latin roots and helps break it down. Our creative guest interview is Daniel Djuro-Goiricelaya. Daniel is not only a deep friend of the pod, he's also a Venezuelan-born, NYC-based interdisciplinary artist, and co-founder of El Patio De Mi Casa, an artist project and pop-up exhibition space for emerging artists. We talk art, design, materials, color (and reclaiming colors), culture, the importance of community, activism, meditation, and balancing work/life and a relationship. Paul plants pansies at the site of homophobic abuse, and the flower is then photographed in its location, entitled after the abuse, and posted on the pansyproject.org. His photographs have been exhibited internationally. The Pansy Project has brought Paul around the world to memorialize homophobic hate crimes and was the focus of the documentary film Les Pensées De Paul.
