The Verala family thought life was about to get better when they were offered a three-bedroom council house which would be suitable for their seven-year-old son, Joel, a wheelchair-user with quadraplegic cerebral palsy. But the family quickly decided they couldn't stay - there were no ramps into the property, the doors weren't wide enough for Joel's wheelchair and there were no hoists to help him around. Instead, the Verala's moved into Grandma's one-bed flat with her while the adaptations take place. The council has told the family it could be another 12 months before the work is completed. Paralympic skier Millie Knight tells us about her new sporting venture - making the England team in karate. She explains how she tackles both sports with 5% vision. And Nikki goes to the blue badge queue where disabled people are queuing to see the Queen lying in state. Most of this programme was recorded before the sad news of the Queen's passing. Today (Tuesday 22 February 2022) Paralympics GB have announced the selected athletes who will be representing Great Britain in Beijing at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games (4 - 13 March 2022). RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with visually impaired alpine skier Millie Knight who along with her Guide Skier, Bret Wild, have been selected to compete at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games. Millie first competed in the Winter Paralympic Games at the age of 14 out in Sochi in 2014 with her Mum as her Guide Skier and she was picked to hold the flag and lead out the team too. Millie went on to compete with her Guide Skier Bret Wild in the winter games in PyeongChang in 2018 and won two silver medals. Millie and Bret recently became Super Combined Champions at the 2022 World Championships which were held in Norway in January 2022. Millie began by telling Toby how she got into skiing and competing in those early days with her Mum as her Guide Skier. Millie then explained to Toby how she and Bret work when they are competing and hurtling down the slopes at breakneck speeds. Millie ended by sharing with Toby her thoughts on going into the games following the recent success she and Bret had at the World Championships, although Millie tells Toby that she is focusing on her day to day routine and keeping fit both physically and mentally and taking each day as it comes to be in the best shape for the games. We wish Millie, Bret and the rest of the Paralympics GB Team all the best for the Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing from everyone here at the RNIB. Here on RNIB Connect Radio we will be following the teams progress, so do listen out for more about the Winter Paralympic Games as they happen here on Connect Radio. (Image shows RNIB logo. Even when she was an optometry school student, Millicent Knight, OD, FAAO, FAARM, began to advocate for the profession and patients. In her new role as Senior Vice President, Customer Development Group, and a member of the leadership team at Essilor, she can do so from an even larger platform.
By age six, Millie Knight had lost 92% of her sight in both eyes and at the same age started skiing. Today, at just 19 years old, Millie is a double Winter Paralympian, three-time Paralympic medallist and current World Para Alpine Downhill Champion – titles she won competing with her sighted ski guide, Brett Wild. Last year Millie was shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year and Sunday Times Young Sports Woman of the Year awards; and was also made an Honorary Doctor of the University of Kent for Commitment to Sport. In September this year, Millie will be going to University to study Psychology, before defending her downhill world title at the World Championship in Switzerland in March 2019.
Millie can tell exactly what type of snow she's on by the swish of her sighted-guide’s skis. Since losing her sight aged 6 she relies on what she can hear, feel and sense – whether finding her way to class at school or whizzing downhill at over 115kph seeing only the blurred bright orange flash of her guide in front. Still only 19 she’s competed in two winter Paralympics, winning two silver medals in South Korea, and sees the world through her travel photography. She’s an absolute inspiration. The 2018 Winter Paralympics closed with a spectacular ceremony in Pyeongchang. Skier Menna Fitzpatrick and her guide Jen Kehoe, who won Britain's only gold of the Games, led the team into the ceremony in South Korea. The pair were given the honour after they claimed victory earlier on Sunday in the visually-impaired slalom to become GB's most successful Winter Paralympians of all time, thanks to their haul of one gold medal, two silvers and a bronze. Millie Knight and guide Brett Wild also finished their Games on a high with bronze in the slalom to add to their two silvers from the downhill and super-G. It meant the team hit their UK Sport medal target of at least seven medals for their biggest winter medal haul since 1984 and since Lottery funding was introduced in the 1990s.
Two 19 year old women brought home all seven medals for Great Britain from the Winter Paralympics. On the last day, Menna Fitzpatrick and her guide Jennifer Kehoe won a gold medal in the visual impairment slalom. And it was bronze for Millie Knight and guide Brett Wild as the team hit their medal target. Moments after the British flag was raised and the national anthem sung the venue was being dismantled. So what’s next for the Winter Paralympics and PyeongChang? Presented by Beth Rose with JJ Chalmers and Chris Osborne.

Weekly Podcast from Cornerstone Wesleyan Church, North Gower, Ontario www.wearecornerstone.ca The passage: Joshua 8 The one thing: Jesus is the one who gets us back on our feet again Moving on after sin: (1) Do not fear. (2) Do learn from your failures. (3) Don't stay down. Get up! (4) Do follow God's word. Know Like skier Millie Knight, have you ever had to overcome profound fear of failure? Share a little about this experience. Grow As they are skiing, Brett Wild communicates to Millie via a Bluetooth earpiece and skis in front of her wearing a bright orange jacket. In what ways can this be a picture to us of God? The Israelites dealt with their sin in chapter 7. Why is chapter 8 so important as a next step? Can you remember the four steps of moving beyond sin? (1. Don't fear. 2. Do learn from your failures. 3. Don't stay down, get up! 4. Do follow God's word.) Point 2 was Do learn from your failures. The Israelites had to learn not to underestimate their enemy: they brought the entire army with them. In your fight against sin, who is in your army? Do you share with anyone regularly and honestly about your battle with sin? Why or why not? Dan said he has heard people say ‘I wouldn't change anything about my past. It's made me who I am today.' But should we have this attitude about sins we've previously committed in our lives? Why or why not? What do you make of the symbolism of Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim (the Israelites splitting into two groups and standing in front of the mountains, the writing of the 10 commandments, the reciting of the blessings and the curses? Why did God make it so elaborate? Dan talked about Jesus being a curse-buster. What did he mean by this, and how does Galatians 3:13 shed light on this? Dan talked about Jesus being a cosmic filtration system: curses in and blessings out. Is this a helpful analogy? Where does it fall short? Explain your answer. Show Think of someone in your life that you know is struggling with long term sin that they are not able to overcome. Perhaps they are a Christian. Perhaps not. Take some time to pray for them, and pray for the opportunity to speak God's truth to them. Perhaps it's as simple as sending them the link to Dan's sermon this week.
From the stunning scenery to the unusual way the blind athletes measure their downhill performance, Beth Rose and Chris Osborne present this podcast - while attempting to use the ski lift.
