On this week's show we take a look at the pros and cons of Low Earth Orbiting Satellites and ask if competition from them could lower your Internet bills. One of our listeners does a good analysis of what it would cost cordcutters to watch every NFL and most College football games. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Hulu App to Be Phased Out as Disney Is ‘Fully Integrating' Service Into Disney+ Fubo drops 100,000 subscribers in Q2 HBO Max to enforce password-sharing crackdown in Sept. Fubo readying sports-only plan for 2025 season Amazon Launches 24 Satellites Aboard SpaceX Rocket to Build Its Home Internet Service Other: dbx 510 Subharmonic Synthesizer for Creating Amazing Deep Bass in Your Home Theater LEO (Low Earth Orbit) Satellite Internet On a recent show we talked about High Speed internet eliminating the need for over the air broadcasting. However we understand that not everyone has access to high speed internet. We mentioned Low Earth Obiting (LEO) satellites as an option. With the news that Amazon has begun putting it's network together, we decided to look at the pros and cons of this type of Internet delivery. LEO satellite internet, like Starlink and the upcoming Amazon Project Kuiper, offers several advantages over traditional satellite based internet. Here's a comparison of the benefits: Benefits of LEO-Based Internet Lower Latency: LEO satellites orbit at 200-2,000 km, much closer than geostationary satellites (35,786 km). This reduces round-trip data travel time, resulting in latency of 20-50 ms compared to 600+ ms for geostationary systems. Benefit: Faster response times for gaming, video calls, and real-time applications, closer to terrestrial fiber (10-30 ms). Global Coverage: LEO constellations, with thousands of satellites, provide internet to remote and rural areas where terrestrial infrastructure (fiber, DSL) is unavailable or costly to deploy. Benefit: Connects underserved regions, ships, planes, and isolated locations. Higher Speeds: LEO systems can deliver download speeds of 100-400 Mbps (with potential for more as technology improves) and upload speeds of 10-40 Mbps, rivaling or exceeding many terrestrial broadband connections. Benefit: Supports streaming, large downloads, and multiple users simultaneously. Scalability: LEO constellations can add more satellites to increase capacity and coverage, adapting to demand more flexibly than laying new cables or building cell towers. Benefit: Easier to expand and improve network performance over time. Resilience: Distributed satellite networks are less vulnerable to single points of failure (e.g., damaged cables or local outages) compared to terrestrial infrastructure. Benefit: More reliable in disaster-prone areas or during natural events. Portability: LEO user terminals (e.g., Starlink dishes) are compact and can be set up anywhere with a clear sky view, enabling mobile or temporary use. Benefit: Ideal for travelers, RVs, or temporary sites like construction zones. Limitations of LEO Internet Compared to Traditional Internet: Cost: LEO internet often requires expensive user equipment (e.g., $300-$600 for a Starlink dish) and monthly subscriptions ($50-$150, depending on region/plan). Traditional internet typically has lower upfront costs (e.g., modem/router) and competitive pricing in urban areas. Weather Sensitivity: LEO signals can be affected by heavy rain, snow, or dense cloud cover, though less severely than geostationary systems. Traditional fiber or cable is generally immune to weather-related disruptions. Network Congestion: In high-density areas, LEO systems may experience reduced speeds if too many users connect to the same satellite or ground station. Traditional broadband, especially fiber, often handles high user density better in urban settings. Line-of-Sight Requirement: LEO terminals need a clear view of the sky, which can be challenging in dense urban areas or locations with tall trees/buildings. Traditional internet (e.g., cable, fiber) doesn't require line-of-sight. Data Caps and Throttling: Some LEO providers impose data caps or throttle speeds during peak usage, whereas many traditional ISPs offer unlimited plans in urban areas. Benefit to traditional: More predictable performance for heavy users. Summary LEO-based internet excels in global reach, low latency, and flexibility, making it a game-changer for remote areas, mobility, and disaster resilience. However, traditional internet (fiber, cable, DSL) often provides lower costs, higher reliability, and better performance in urban areas with established infrastructure. The choice depends on location, use case, and budget, at least for now.

High Culture Hiring – so nennt Medizinalcannabis-Scale-up enua sein kompromissloses Recruiting-System.
We've received several requests to update our low/full-speed USB isolator breakout, which used the ADUM4160. Low speed is for peripherals like mice and keyboards, where bandwidth demands are minimal. Full speed suits microcontrollers, audio interfaces, and simple USB accessories. High speed is needed for flash drives, video devices, data acquisition units, and external disks. Unsurprisingly, there's demand for high-speed isolation. We're now exploring USB isolation ICs that support high-speed performance. Stay tuned! National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has today (Wednesday) hosted an event on Achill Island to mark the first connections to high-speed fibre broadband on the remote island Main build works on the island infrastructure are now complete enabling over 2,500 homes, farms and businesses to high-speed broadband. This means that residents of Ireland's largest island will have the same access to 2 Gig, reliable, broadband as any of the over 380,000 premises that NBI has already passed across the country. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D., was present at the event which included local public representatives, community groups and residents from the island. Minister O'Donovan said: "The National Broadband Plan is one of the largest State infrastructure projects since rural electrification, and ensures that no community, home or business is left behind from a connectivity point of view. This means that delivering broadband infrastructure to the residents of Achill Island is a natural extension of this mandate. "I'm delighted to be here today to witness first-hand the impact that this investment and connectivity to high-speed broadband is having for homes, businesses and the entire island community who will reap the benefits of it for decades to come." David McCourt, Founder and Chairman of National Broadband Ireland, commented: "At NBI, we are working to the mandate from Government to ensure that no town, village, or community will be left behind under the National Broadband Plan. No premises is too rural or too remote and we're proud to be here on Achill Island - one of 27 offshore islands in our rollout - to mark the availability of our world-class fibre network." TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "The delivery of fibre broadband infrastructure to Achill Island is a significant milestone for NBI, and we are delighted to have end customers already connected and enjoying the benefits of reliable, high-speed broadband. This is a major step forward for digital connectivity, helping people stay connected, work remotely, stream seamlessly, and access vital online services. "Fibre broadband is the gold standard for fast, reliable internet - and thanks to the National Broadband Plan, many homes and businesses across Ireland can already make the switch today. By switching to fibre, users can leave behind the limitations of outdated copper networks, which were never designed to meet the demands of today's digital world." Local connected customer and owner of House of Achill, Anna Sutcliffe, said: "Since connecting to the NBI Network with Imagine, my business has really grown. Traditionally on the island, we are very dependent on the tourism season. Now with fibre, I finally have a fast, reliable connection to support online sales and ensure customer service year-round. I can now focus on what I enjoy most about the business: being creative." Glenda Brady, Commercial Director, Imagine, said:"At Imagine, our roots have always been in rural Ireland and in serving communities like Achill. This is a moment we're really proud of. Fibre connectivity will allow business owners, like Anna, succeed in a much bigger digitally connected market, no matter where they are based." Local connected customer and owner of Lilí Bán Café, John Barrett, said: "I opened Lilí Bán Café in the summer of 2021 and soon realised that running a business on Achill Island has its challenges. Without fibre broadband, the weather often impacted the signal and reliability of the connection. Since connecting to NBI's fibre with Westnet, it's been a real game changer. At the café, we can now manage online bookings and operate a card machine. It's exciting to see a new wave of business starting on the island and fibre connectivity has definitely played a big part in this." Paul Cunnane, Chief Executive Officer, Westnet, said: "Westnet has a long-standing...

Today's podcast takes a deep dive into High Speed 2 via the recently published Stewart Review, a detailed piece of work which attempts to help government to learn lessons and take stock from this much discussed project. And I'm pleased to say that to help me with this task today I am joined by the report's author, James Stewart, long-standing infrastructure finance and delivery expert who I know will guide us first hand through his report. A bit of background. As we know, the HS2 project was conceived as a once-in-a-generation investment in the UK's rail infrastructure — a high-speed line that would transform north-south connectivity, unlock capacity across the network, and drive long-term economic growth. But more than a decade on, the vision has been dramatically curtailed, costs have escalated, and delivery timelines continue to slip. Following James' report, government has now confirmed that completion will stretch beyond 2033, and that costs will be significantly higher than anticipated. All of which means hard questions must be asked — not just about what went wrong, but how we do things differently next time.James' Stewart Review offers a forensic assessment of HS2's delivery challenges, with a particular focus on governance, assurance, capability, and the wider system in which such projects are planned and delivered. The comprehensive report highlights what really went wrong, what needs to change, and, crucially, how the UK can rebuild trust in its ability to deliver major projects.Lots to discuss so let's get stuck in...ResourcesThe Stewart Review: The HS2 ExperienceMark Wild's CEO first 100 days review of HS2HS2 websiteAgile Infrastructure PartnersThe 10 year Infrastructure StrategyThe Industrial Strategy

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company responsible for delivering the Government's National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that two-thirds of homes, farms and businesses in the rollout area can now connect to high-speed broadband. There are now 367,154 premises that have been passed with NBI fibre (out of the 564,000 currently included in the NBP Intervention Area). This follows a decision earlier this year to bring forward the connection timeline for 65,000 homes, farms and businesses, ensuring faster access to fibre broadband for thousands of families and communities across rural Ireland. When a premises is passed, an order can be placed to connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI Network. People living and working in rural Ireland can enter their Eircode on the NBI website, www.nbi.ie, to see if their home or business is included in the rollout and how to get connected. With more than 50 broadband providers actively selling on NBI's open-access network, rural communities now have access to the same level of competition and choice as those in urban areas. Customers can select from a wide range of internet providers, with competitive pricing and bundled packages available nationwide. The rollout is already delivering meaningful impact with 129,079 premises already connected. Take-up rates now average 35% and continue to climb, approaching 60% in areas where the network has been live the longest such as the rural areas near Athlone, Castlebar and Emyvale. Fibre broadband is also live on ten offshore islands, including Hare Island, Collanmore Island and Rutland Island, with build works significantly completed on others, including Achill Island, where people can now order connectivity on the NBI Network. Independent research has highlighted early social and economic benefits, such as improved quality of life, increased productivity for rural businesses, and enhanced access to services, showing the transformative potential of the NBP as it nears completion. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D., said: "This is a major milestone for the National Broadband Plan and for rural Ireland. Two-thirds of homes, farms and businesses in the rollout area can now access world-class connectivity - a transformative step for communities, businesses and families across the country. Reliable high-speed broadband is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity, and I am proud of the Government's ongoing commitment to ensuring every home, no matter how remote, is given the opportunity to thrive in a connected world." Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "We are proud to have passed two-thirds of the premises in the State intervention area, bringing us significantly closer to our goal of delivering high-speed fibre broadband to every home, farm and business in the rollout area. The strong and growing take-up rate reflects the demand for reliable connectivity in rural Ireland and the trust people are placing in the NBI network. With over 50 retail providers offering services on our open-access network, end users have real choice and access to world-leading speeds." Progress update as of 23.05.2025: The number of premises passed, and which can connect to NBI's fibre network, is 367,154. 129,079 premises are already connected. The average take-rate is 35%. Take-up is approaching 60% where services have been available for longer. 95% of the project (537,286 premises) has moved to or through construction. 100% of premises have been surveyed. Take-up rates are approaching 60% in the Deployment Areas that were released first. 955 Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) have been installed and are live with 672 of these in schools. A high-speed broadband connection through NBI is available for order on 10 of the 27 islands included in the rollout. The remaining 17 islands are in various stages of survey and design works. Paul also raced against most of this year's rookies in F2 last year so shares his thoughts on how Kimi Antonelli, Ollie Bearman, Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto and Jack Doohan are performing so far.
