How FAFSA delays have impacted local students. How Milwaukee's population has changed and presidential election implications. The annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival is happening this week.
One of the nation's longest-running annual comedy festivals, the Milwaukee Comedy Festival presents top national and regional stand-up comedy acts this week through Sunday.
If you had $4,000, what would you do with that money? Pay bills? Buy a fancy bauble? Destroy a guitar because you don't know how to process your feelings? Greg has a suggestion for those who would pick the third option. Also, are you a man? Do you like straws? Do you like Tim Walz? Well, sorry...you're a woman now. Then it's time to really talk comedy, The Milwaukee Comedy Festival, to be specific. We wrap up with the show with another installment of This Shouldn't Be A Thing - Political Edition. Why is Eric Adams being held to a different standard than say, Clarence Thomas? We wonder why... As always, thank you for listening, texting and calling, we couldn't do this without you! What's the line between "good trouble" and just getting into trouble? We talk about what happened with the band The 1975 when lead singer Matty Healy went on a rant bashing the country's anti-gay laws and kissed his male bandmate on stage, prompting the Malaysian government to cut the festival they were playing at short. Homosexuality is punishable by 20 years in prison in majority-Muslim Malaysia, which called Healy's behavior “an insult” to the country's laws. Was that activism or was he just being antagonistic while being a guest in another country? Then we talk to Dick Kapinski, Director of Communications for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) which celebrates 70 years this week. We all turn into aviation nerds by the end of the segment. Lots of stuff happening at The Laughing Tap: Mike Stanley is headlining 3 shows this Friday and Saturday First ever Service Industry night is Monday 7/31 $10 tickets! Milwaukee Comedy Festival line up announcements coming soon!

In Episode 45 I'm joined by Milwaukee comedian Kaitlin McCarthy to discuss Hereditary. This is one of my favorite new movies, be warned we go full spoilers! We discussed using comedy as a tool to explore dark personal issues and how powerful that can be ....and sometimes alienating. We also discussed how comedy can be a community to turn to when those larger issues hit. In addition to working on the Milwaukee Comedy Festival, Kaitlin also produces one of my favorite shows, Subjective: A Comedic Showing The second Friday of every month in Milwaukee Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/SubjectiveAComedicShowing/?ref=br_rs And follow her on twitter at: @The_Kaits_Meow
Back in 2015, we decided to help informally kick off the Milwaukee Comedy Festival by asking eight comedians to take the stage at Bremen Cafe and gently (or, in some cases, straight-up viciously) make fun of the city they love in our inaugural Roast Of Milwaukee event. Following the wonderful response to those verbal punches thrown in the direction of Milwaukee, we decided to do it again with an even bigger and better event at Club Garibaldi the following year. Then a standing-room-only affair last August. Since there's no shortage of material about Milwaukee out there, we figured we'd do it again. On Monday, July 30, a sold-out crowd at Club Garibaldi enjoyed a ton of jokes, plenty of jabs, and unofficially kicked off the Milwaukee Comedy Festival at the 4th annual Roast Of Milwaukee. Comedians Dana Ehrmann, Patrick Tomlinson, Matt Werner, Carter Deems, Jeff Wheatley-Heckman, and Kaitlin McCarthy all lambasted the city (and each other). Milwaukee Comedy Festival founder Matt Kemple and other media personalities—including Ramie Makhlouf (105.7 The Fan), Tarik Moody (88Nine Radio Milwaukee) and host Jon Adler (FM 102.1)—joined in on the biting-but-loving roasting action. Oh, and we raised a bunch of money for the Milwaukee Women's Center in the process. King Eye & The Squirts, meanwhile, blew the house down (and somehow offended one or two people in attendance) before the show. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Join Surly at Somerset Amphitheater for the brewery's annual Darkness Day on Saturday, September 29. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of King Eye & The Squirts ("Squirm," "When The Sun Goes Down").
Originating long before the city had anything even resembling a sustainable comedy community, Milwaukee Comedy Festival has grown and evolved in kind with Milwaukee's humor scene. From August 1-5, the Milwaukee-curated undertaking will offer an eclectic blend of stand-up, improv, and sketch comedy in its 13th year. In addition to the festival itself, which boasts the likes of Colin Quinn and the Lady Parts Justice League, there are also some pre-MCF kickoff shows (including our Roast Of Milwaukee event). Before the fun kicks off, host Tyler Maas went to The Underground Collaborative—the site of the vast majority of the weekend's shows—to talk about all things Milwaukee Comedy Festival with founder Matt Kemple, along with co-producers Kaitlin McCarthy and Greg Bach. Together, they discussed the festival's origin, ways it's grown and evolved through the years, what to expect at the 2018 Milwaukee Comedy Festival, and how they (through their work at Milwaukee Comedy) are working to improve stand-up in the city all year long. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Join Surly at Somerset Amphitheater for the brewery's annual Darkness Day on Saturday, September 29. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Piles ("Blue Glue") and Amanda Huff ("Gravetalking").
Matt Kemple is a busy man. When he's not producing theatrical events and comedy showcases at the Underground Collaborative (which he founded and manages), he's booking nationally known comedians like Godfrey, Nick Thune, Neil Hamburger, Andy Kindler, and Joe Mande at venues around town as part of his Milwaukee Comedy endeavor. This August, Milwaukee Comedy Festival—which Kemple founded and produces—will turn 12 years old. Later that month, he'll co-produce the second annual Milwaukee Fringe Festival, which he co-founded as well. Though Kemple can rarely get out of his office at this point in the year, he did set aside some time to let host Tyler Maas swing by his abode to share a few beers and talk about his whirlwind August. The pair discussed each day of the Fest (starting with our semi-affiliated Roast Of Milwaukee event), the decision to move the majority of the festival to the Underground Collaborative, and how the event has quickly grown to a level capable of bringing talents like Michael Ian Black and Deborah Wilson to town. They also get into the Fringe Festival and the various difficulties and rewards that come with producing large-scale undertakings.
We had the totally awesome Andrea Guzzetta (Insta: @andreaguzzeta, Milwaukee Comedy Festival) eat Thai food with us while we watched Golden Girls! It was a late night, sleepycast! We watched the two-parter where Rose's previous partner Miles' friend Ray starts hanging out with Rose and Rose begins to be stalked by his jealous wife. Also, Dorothy reveals to Sophia that she has been dating Stan behind her back. AND Debbie Reynolds. We talked about the sitcom "Stripper and Cop," polygamist divorces and Trump's Golden Goons. Music by Mike Dennison (@mikd33) and Brian Kokernak (@kokernutz).
In accordance with the 11th annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival, Milwaukee Record recorded a special live episode of our On The Record podcast at The Underground Collaborative, a wonderful 120-seat venue in the basement of The Shops Of Grand Avenue. We were joined by a tremendous trio of guests. Comedian, promoter, and Milwaukee Comedy Festival co-producer Kaitlin McCarthy led things off, followed by Tim Higgins, a veteran improviser and co-star of Old Milwaukee's popular "Pass Me A Beer" ads that have been seen by millions of people. Spud Butler, frontman of The Blue Mooners, played us out with some fanny-focused compositions in a rare solo performance. Between the bits, beer-passing, and butt songs, it was a weird, wild, and unhinged show for the ages.
To help kick off the 11th annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival, Milwaukee Record invited an impressive group of local comedians and media professionals to Club Garibaldi to make fun of our fair city. Among those who took on Milwaukee's neighborhood differences, flag debacle, segregation, drinking tendencies, and upstart entertainment publications were Big Show radio host Ramie Makhlouf, OnMilwaukee senior writer Molly Snyder, as well as comedians Ton Johnson, Marisa Lange, Jacob Bach, Tyler Menz, Chastity Washington, and Christopher Schmidt. If you weren't among the 120-plus people who attended the Tuesday night affair, you're in luck. We recorded it.
Milwaukee Comedy Festival and Fringe Fest co-founder Matt Kemple somehow finds enough time to get away from the office to join host Tyler Maas at Milwaukee Record's uncharacteristically noisy work space to discuss his various ventures, the struggles he (and the city's entertainment realm in general) faces, the origin of Milwaukee Fringe Festival, and how helping organize raves in his youth still informs the way he puts on a show today.

Shanda's comedy is a look into her sometimes absurd life as a mother, woman and human being, but audiences only need to be one of those 3 to find her relatable and hilarious.Get tickets for Shanda's show on New Year's Eve at The Comedy Attic here:https://www.comedyattic.com/events/50924Follow Shanda on Twitter & Instagram here:https://twitter.com/shandaspandahttps://www.instagram.com/shanda.sung/?hl=enCheck out Passing Notes podcast here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passing-notes-with-ashley-and-shanda/id1562149902If you'd like to support the show and get some cool perks, check out our Patreon page:https://www.patreon.com/btbpcLook for new stuff for Patrons soon!Head over to the Behind the Bits website for extra content:https://www.thebtbpc.com/Get on our mailing list for news about future guests and more great content:https://www.thebtbpc.com/p/mailing-list/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
