I recently shared a new conversation with the band Regulator Watts, so it now seems fitting to share an older talk I had with their distant cousin, Reggie Watts, the gifted comedian, musician, and actor. Reggie and I first spoke on Wednesday May 9, 2012, at 3 PM ET, ostensibly about his then new special, A Live at Central Park, but we also covered his comedic and musical influences, his interest in Canadian television, opening for Conan O'Brien on his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour 2010, which I saw at Massey Hall, a question from Nick Flanagan, a forthcoming television adaptation of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast he was co-starring in, and other things too.To hear this entire conversation, subscribe to Kreative Kontrol on Patreon at the $6 tier or higher (a reminder that an annual subscription includes a discount compared to a monthly one).Related episodes/links:Ep. #966: Regulator WattsEp. #894: “Weird Al” YankovicEp. #818: Jon DoreEp. #498: Lauren Lapkus! Matt talks with general manager of Rumors Restaurant & Comedy Club in Winnipeg, Tyler Schultz about discovering talent, taking risks & the future of comedy.Rumors Comedy Club Website: https://rumorscomedyclub.com/Matt Falk's Links: https://linktr.ee/mattfalkTell a friend about us!Credit: Music: https://www.purple-planet.comCredit: Photo: https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/2024/04/26/funny-business-4My guest today is the general manager of Rumors Restaurant and Comedy Club which is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year.Rumors has been host to some of the top comedians in the industry including, Chris Rock, Marlon Wayans, Brad Garrett, Jon Lovitz, Dave, Chappelle, Tom Segura, Bob Saget, Steve Harvey, Jon Stewart, Nate Bargatze and Norm Macdonald who called Rumors, "the best club in Canada." By the way, that list barely begins to cover it. They still bring in the biggest headlining comics on the continent including, Jon Dore, Jay Pharaoh, Mark Forward, Nathan Macintosh, Deb Digiovani, DJ Demeeers, man these lists could keep going on forever. The club is also home to the Winnipeg's Funniest Person with a Day Job competition. A contest that's seen the likes of Paul Rabluiskus, Aisha Alfa, John B Duff and more compete and has become a deep seated showcase in the province. My guest began working at the comedy club in 2007 and quickly became a mainstay of the establishment. So much so that 2 years later, when the co-owner and manager Ross Rumberg passed away, it was an easy choice to ask Tyler to step in.Since then the club has seen steady and persistent growth and innovation. It's not every club you go to, that has consistently full houses on Tuesday's and Wednesdays, let alone the regularly packed weekend shows. Rumor's unique approach to booking acts and selling tickets has contributed to it being constantly listed as one of the top comedy clubs in North America alongside The World Famous Hollywood Improv, Gotham and The Comedy Store. But it's not just critics and list makers that shout the club's praises. I've joked that this podcast could be called the I love Rumors podcast because my conversations with guests faithfully evolve into singing the club's praises. My guest is an avid supporter of stand-up comedy in Canada and many comedians, including myself, owe a bulk of their success to this human being. Join Oliver as he chills with legendary comedian Jon Dore, who makes his return to the show for this special Father's Day episode! Jon is an adept comic who weaves together whimsical charm and deadpan delivery to create a truly unforgettable standup comedy experience. His 2023 release titled 'A Person Who Is Gingerbread' received critical acclaim, winning the JUNO award for 'Comedy Album of the Year'! He now also co-hosts 'Brother/Sister: The Podcast' alongside his delightful sister Allison. A pod that boasts an enchanting mix of inane riffs and sincere sibling stories. Things get started with talk about Dads, fasting and the fantastic opening acts at Jon's recent Yuk Yuk's Ottawa performance. As you might expect of a Father's Day episode, the conversation dives into parenting, step-parenting and annoying kids' shows. The discussion then touches on seizures, superstitions and Jon's memories of working for a murder mystery theatre production years ago. Oliver's Dad inquires about the pros/cons of living in Alaska and Jon gets curious about Oliver's job at the hospital. All of this and much more in this chat with one of the funniest human beings on the planet. Jon Dore is a national treasure, or will be when he returns to Canada from Alaska, where he's been living these past few years. He's not everyone's cup of maple syrup, however. His humour lurks on the dark side: domestic arguments, pregnancy, cancer, his own surprise diagnosis of epilepsy. There are few borders Jon won't cross, literally and figuratively. We talk about lifestyle changes, free speech, love of family and country, and being best friends with an 8 year old.Jon Dore was named Best Newcomer by the Canadian Comedy Awards back in 2013. Ten years later, he won the Juno for his album A Person who is Gingerbread. In between, Jon has created, hosted and appeared in lots of big shows, like Canadian Idol, How I Met Your Mother, Inside Amy Schumer, Humour Resources and The Lake. He currently lives in Juneau, Alaska with his partner Christina and their two children, but hopes to move back to his native Ottawa. You Can watch the episode on YouTube. Warning: there is a lot of Brampton talk in this episode. My guest, Jordan Gavaris, grew up in my town so brace yourself for a walk down memories of the Bramalea City Centre.Otherwise the top subject is Gavaris' Prime Video series The Lake, which just returned for a second season on the Amazon-owned streaming service. Shot in Ontario's cottage country, the story finds Gavaris -- previously best-known for Orphan Black -- as Justin, a gay dad with a 16-year-old daughter named Billie (Madison Shamoun). That's what happens when you get your best friend pregnant at prom. The baby was given up for adoption.Justin reconnects with his city girl by bringing her to the cherished cabin where he spent his youth. Trouble is, his back-stabbing step-sister, Maisy-May (Julia Stiles). has claimed the cottage and stolen it from him. A lot of canoe jousting ensues. There are several other very funny people in this series, including Jon Dore as an obnoxious neighbour dude. Recent brioux.tv podcast guest Lauren Holly gets into the mix in Season Two as a mom-from-Hell. I wasn't sure about The Lake at first so I kept watching, and liked it more and more with each episode. You'll feel the same way about Gavaris after listening to this fun and frisky conversation. Check us out and get ready to jump in The Lake.

Among the first crop of winners at this year's Juno Awards was Jon Dore, who won the Comedy Album of the Year Juno for A Person Who is Gingerbread, the veteran Canadian comic's debut comedy album from Howl & Roar Records (headed by his sister, Allison Dore). The Ottawa native has had a long career working on both sides of the border, first becoming a household name as a correspondent for 3 seasons of CTV's Canadian Idol before hosting The Jon Dore Television Show on the Comedy Network for 2 seasons. Jon was the first stand-up comic to appear on TBS' Conan when it debuted on November 11, 2010 (his first of many appearances on the late night show), and he hosted multiple seasons of HBO Canada's Funny as Hell, an alternative comedy showcase shot each year during Just for Laughs in Montreal. He's appeared multiple times on the Comedy Central sketch shows Inside Amy Schumer and The Kroll Show, as well as CBC's Baroness von Sketch Show, and in 2021 created and starred in CBC's Humour Resources, shot during the early days of the pandemic. (You can -- and should -- watch all the episodes now on CBC Gem.) Leading up to this year's Junos, Andrew Lizotte got the chance to chat with Jon from his home in Juneau, Alaska about how his album got more personal than his previous material, growing up with a funny sister, the process of filming Humour Resources, what it's like living in Alaska, and work-life balance before and after having a baby. Jon Dore's A Person Who is Gingerbread can be purchased from Howl & Roar Records and streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.

On 1 April 2022 the RNIB and Community Health and Eye Care (CHEC) announced a new strategic partnership to provide a dedicated Eye Care Liaison Officer service across 10 of CHEC's community eye care centres. CHEC, is one of the largest providers of community-based ophthalmology services in the UK and the new Eye Care Liaison Officer service will ensure CHEC patients receive tailored practical and emotional support from when they receive a sight loss diagnosis. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Jon Dore, Chief Operating Officer at CHEC and Mike Harrison, Partnership and Developments Manager here at the RNIB to find out more about the new partnership and the new remote ECLO service. John began by giving Toby an outline to who CHEC are, their services within the community, why they wanted to partner with the RNIB to provide this new ECLO service and the type of support patients will receive from the new service too. Mike then explained to Toby how the ECLO service has developed and expanded over the years in line with changes within the eye care service and new ways of working following on from the Covid pandemic, with a quick mention about the recent celebrations around the appointment of the 100th ECLO and some newly appointed ECLOs too. Mike also stated why the RNIB wanted to forge this partnership with CHEC on the new remote ECLO service and why it is so important for newly diagnosed patients to receive the support and advice from an Eye Care Liaison Officer whether that is at the eye hospital clinic or in the community like the service that CHEC is now providing. If you would like to find out more about the role of an Eye Care Liaison Officer and how the role is supporting blind and partially sighted people whether that is in an eye clinic at your local eye hospital or out in the community then do visit the ECLO pages of the RNIB website via the following link - https://www.rnib.org.uk/advice/eye-health/who-does-what/eclo (Image shows RNIB logo.
