It's happened before, you know. Forty-odd years ago an earlier gang of troublemakers had to knock some sense into the slicked-up boot scooters who had taken over the dance floor. Their names are legend now — Waylon, Willie, Kris. Their impact revitalized a genre that had lost touch with its rowdier roots. But time passes and once again, to borrow a phrase from Ol' Waylon, we need a change. That's Tommy's cue to sling on his guitar, crank it up and … well, the title of his new album says it all.Turn Back The Clock is rough around the edges, full of attitude and proud of it. It draws a line in the dirt and dares us to cross it, to leave behind the weary tropes of commercial country and reclaim the muscle and spirit of the outlaw era.Townsend's connection to these forebears dates back to a family vacation when he was about 13. While driving to Panama City, Florida from northeastern Georgia, his uncle popped in an 8-track of the album Ol' Waylon; by the time they reached the beach, Townsend was hooked.Shortly after that, his parents took him to hear Jennings perform live, at Lanier Land Music Park. After the show, Mom and Dad talked their way past the Hell's Angels security guards and into the backstage area, where he introduced his son to the man who would become Tommy's inspiration and mentor.Townsend was soon welcomed into the Jennings fold. He befriended Waylon's wife Jessi Colter, their children and members of the Waylors, whose bassist Jerry Bridges and Waylon himself co-produced Townsend's first solo session. They took him out on the road and even brought him up onstage now and then to play with the band. Tommy and Waylon spent time alone together too, talking about lessons learned from life and conveyed through songs. These experiences were invaluable — and, as Townsend grew beyond his formative years, sometimes a hurdle too. “People still think of me as the young Waylon Jennings,” he says. “It took me a while to get past that and start finding out who I am as an artist.”That process accelerated in his late teens as he began writing songs. While he doesn't deny Jennings' impact -- in fact, he acknowledges it gratefully — Townsend used it to nurtured his own artistry. These two facts of his musical life run separately: Since 2008 he has honored his musical hero by singing with Waymore's Outlaws, whose lineup includes former Jennings sidekicks Bridges on bass, Richie Albright on drums and steel guitarist Fred Newell. In 2014 they hit the road, opening for Waylon's son Shooter Jennings and then backing him through his set as well. The more time they spent together on the road, the more Shooter recognized his friend's uniqueness and sensed that he was ready to step out from his Waylon shadow. “He heard that I did his dad's songs in my own way,” Townsend says. “That's what Shooter liked about what I was doing with the band. Jessi Colter told me the same thing: ‘You're not trying to sound like Waylon. You're doing the songs in your own way. After a series of shows, Shooter expressed an interest in producing an album on Townsend focused on Tommy's electric rhythm playing. They began gathering songs, beginning with Brandi Carlisle's “The Eye,” which Jennings heard as a great vehicle for Townsend's voice. By December they had assembled a diverse list of originals and covers, unified by Townsend's ability to deliver them with passion and insight, and started recording what is now Turn Back The Clock. On this exceptional, much-needed solo debut, Townsend turns Steve Young's “Renegade Picker” into a swaggering, hard-hitting honky-tonk anthem. By changing the lyric to reflect a male point of view, Townsend personalizes “Drinkin'” as no artists have other than its composer, Holly Williams. The magic of Gordon Lightfoot's immortal “Sundown” deepens in a new, bluesy interpretation.

The Polyvagal Theory: Know It And Know Your Dog, With Sue Mimm Today’s Guest Sue Mimm - Reactive Dog Expert I’m so excited to introduce to you today’s guest, dog trainer and behavior therapist, Sue Mimm. For someone who describes herself as “not very sciencey” she sure has a great understanding of what’s going on when our dogs are reacting! Sue is a fellow dog behaviorist, and we found a great deal of common ground when it comes to our ways of working with reactive dogs. We both understand that dogs who’ve had some sort of trauma, or even just a lack of socialization, can be reactive to other dogs, strangers and a variety of other stimuli. We know that we need to help these dogs learn that the things they think are dangerous, actually aren't… and we know that our barking, lunging dog is not just doing this for the fun of it. Our dog is actually distressed.  Now what Sue brings to us today is a scientific explanation of what’s going on in our dog’s brain and body while they are reacting to things they think might be dangerous. Driven by her own desire to understand and help our distressed dogs, Sue’s research led her to the Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, Ph.D. This has enabled Sue to understand and to pinpoint the times when we can work on desensitization with our dogs versus the times when we need to just allow our dogs to feel safe and happy, and highlights the importance of the Social Engagement System. When we understand what’s really going on inside our dogs, and we understand the science behind what makes our training methods so successful, then we are far better equipped to help our reactive dogs. I just loved having this chat with Sue because it helped me to understand WHY we aim to work with our dogs when they’re in the Green Zone. I knew that our dogs learn best when they’re calm, and that trying to work with a dog who has spiked up into the Red Zone is simply not helpful, but it was such a buzz for me to learn the science behind why this is the case! If you’re trying to help your reactive dog then you absolutely MUST tune into today’s podcast with Sue Mimm. You’ll be seeing things in a whole new light! You’ll Hear About:  [02:15] The Honeymoon Period [04:30] When things start to go wrong [05:30] The Polyvagal Theory [09:00] … and how it operates in our dogs [12:10] Why dogs “don’t listen” [15:00] The incredible benefits of being in the “Green Zone” [17:45] Why many types of “Desensitisation Training” don’t work [21:15] Keys things we can do to calm down our Nervous System [25:00] Co-regulation: How OUR moods and feelings can affect our dogs - and the role of the Vagus Nerve [33:00] The importance of helping our dogs to feel safe [36:40] How to do “desensitisation” the right way [40:30] Where to learn more from Sue How You Can Get Involved: Contact Sue for a chat about helping your REACTIVE dog. Sue is based in Tirol, Austria, where she runs her business called Heart Connection Dogs.  She offers both online services and in-person coaching in English and German. What are YOU doing to help your own energetic state? Remember how important this is for helping YOUR reactive dog. Consider meditation, yoga, and being in nature. Perhaps make a list of things you ALREADY do that help you to be in your Green Zone, and give yourself a pat on the back! Have you ever wondered about the science behind what we do as brilliant partners? We strive to live in harmony with our dogs, and do our best to create an environment that’s safe, calm and happy for them! Today Kathy welcomes Sue Mimm to Enlightened By Dogs to discuss the intriguing Polyvagal Theory. Introduced by Dr. Stephen Porges in 1994, the Polyvagal Theory surrounds the school of thought that we have different pathways through the brain which determines our response stress, anxiety and fearful situations. Since dogs and humans are both highly socially intelligent, it makes a lot of sense that our dogs would experience the same kinds of things we do! They get anxious, nervous and fearful too, and their responses aren’t as obvious to us sometimes. In this episode, Sue clues us in to some of the things we miss as dog lovers, and how the brain actually creates these responses in the first place! Tune in to find out if your dog is actually a pain, or if they’re just scared!   Digging for new ways to help dogs deal with trauma. The science of safety and the social engagement system The three pathways of response, and how they show up in our dogs. How to do the safe, calm and happy protocol, in order to strengthen neural and emotional responses.   “There’s a lot of research done into human behaviour as far as trauma and anxiety, etc. but obviously very little in the animal kingdom” “We miss the smaller signals that they’re sending us that they aren’t feeling safe.” “Just because we might perceive it as not being dangerous doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t perceive it as being dangerous” “You are actually doing something by being safe, calm and happy”   Get in touch with Sue at https://heartconnectiondogs.com Want More of Kathy? Around our house: Well, my mom Margaret was in town for a little over three weeks in January. She came to visit with Emily and I yes, but truthfully she was here to be a grandma. She goes by Mimm and our daughter Clemence loves her. I think Mimm was the mom called her great aunt. It is a pretty good grandma name I feel. Anyhow, having my mom around definitely reinforced just how wonderful it is to have support when raising a family. Neither Emily or I have any family in central Oregon. So far, our work schedules have been such that we have not needed any childcare, and for that we are so thankful but it is a busy life and having Mimm around gave us time to work on our home, see some friends and have some dates together. It seems ironic, hypocritical, or something like that to me that I simultaneously talk about the importance of family and elders so much on this show, but also live so far away from my own family. I think about it all the time. One thing I talk and think about is the individualism and the sense of entitlement of younger generations, including myself. I take full responsibility for striking out on my own when I was 23 and moving all the way across the country leaving my family and the place I grew up to move to a place where I new no one, had no community. At the time, that move was fueled by a need to get out of the suburbs and out of the city, towards the mountains, like minded people and a slower pace of life. 15 years later I still feel those initial imperatives, but things have changed a bit. While the initial draw to this place was mountain bike trails, snowboarding, and rock climbing I have since truly fallen in love with the people, the forests, and the land. I have been inspired and drawn in by the work people are doing in the Northwest to build vibrant small businesses that are responsible to their communities. I am watching as my friends follow their dreams to become farmers, artists, musicians, healers, and advocates for social change. Many of them have been featured on this podcast. So anyhow, I miss my family so very much, but I don’t think that I could ever move back closer to my family and keep my sanity. I know that there are people doing similarly great work in Atlanta and probably all over the country, and I would love to hear more about it all, I just haven’t seen it and felt it the way I do in the northwest. I would like to think that everyone feels that way about where they live. I hope so. I hope that when people look around they are proud of what their neighbors and community members are doing. I would really love to hear more about other people feelings around these ideas. I know that so many of my friends have moved away from their homes for various reasons. When you step back and evaluate it all, what do you feel? Or if you are living where you grew up, what do you feel about that? What connection do you have to the place where you put your roots? Is it one that you are fond of? I often wish that I was generations into a place, and reaping the rewards of longstanding connection to a place. What does that feel like? So yeah, this is just me thinking and feeling out loud, kinda canoeing in the sea of my own individualism and entitlement and trying to make sense of it all. Fun stuff huh??? We recently had a gathering to celebrate the January Wolf Moon Total Lunar eclipse. The gathering was great. A handful of friends joined us around the fire to ponder the heavens and give thanks. We didn’t, see the moon however. It was too cloudy out. I thought it was a bummer, but my friend Cathasach informed me that historically it may have been considered a bad idea to look directly at such celestial events. So perhaps things worked out just as they should have. Right about the time of the release of this show Emily and I will be doing our second new moon cleanse of the year. This is just a quick three day cleanse we have commited to doing each new moon. Last month was great. Oh yeah, our couch! The couch that I made turned out great. It took about three days of my work, if I had more proper tools and a better workspace or friendly weather, I could probably have done it in a day. That’s for my work on the frame. Alicia at NW Trading Post and Howl Attire made custom waxed canvas covers and they turned out amazing. We are happy to support a local artist in the building of our furniture. Oh, and another update on the downgrading of my phone. I have been enjoying and benefitting from not having the internet in my pocket. All in all it has been a great thing. I do miss the camera and group text but hey, small price to pay to take some of my time back. The first time I really regretted changing to a simpler phone was when I was recording the interview you are getting ready to listen too. The sound quality is noticibly less good than on a more sophisticated phone, so I apologize for that both to my listeners and to Luke, my guest. instagram.com/outofashesfarm/   Interview: Luke Cirillo is a farmer at Out of Ashes Farm, along with his wife Allison. About 7 years ago Luke and Allison moved out to a little farm in Redland, Or, without really knowing what they were doing. They still consider themselves learners. As time has gone, they have gained greater clarity about the shape their farm is taking, and how they want to serve the ends of local ecological farming.  Luke and Allison focus on water-harvesting systems, soil building, perennial poly-cultures and small animal production systems. They breed pigs and raise them for meat harvest, chickens and ducks for eggs, and set all of that in the context of fruit, nut and berry production. Their system is still quite young, but already beginning to take shape. I hope you enjoy the interview with Luke. instagram.com/outofashesfarm/   Modern Folk logo by Stefan Perkinz greasywhisper.comTheme music by Lee Rosevere Support for Modern Folk comes from my wife Emily Wiggins. We kick off another Inside Music Row with the mention of the Pistol Annies as the hot trio is set to release their second album together.  Look for the new album, "Annie Up," to hit stores May 7th.  Also in the news is the thrid annual Johnny Cash Music Festival as it is shaping up for 2013 - look for Vince Gill, Larry Gatlin, Jimmy Fortune, and many more to perform August 17th in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  Also in the news is a new corn whiskey on sale with Tennessee ties.  "Grandaddy Mimms authentic corn whiskey," is now being produced by Tommy Townsend; the lead singer of Waymore's Outlaws.  Tommy is also the grandson of notorious moonshiner Jack "Mimm" McClure and has received his family's blessing to bring Mimm's to market.  Finally, we go Inside The Song with B.J. Thomas to hear about one of his all-time most popular songs, "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head."
